Review Highlights
Ice Cream Plus is where I go, braving the one homeless guy that guilted me into buying him a footlong Subway sandwich with extra meat and cheese - the nerve of these starving people! when I need a creamy frozen treat but without the fat and calories of actual ice cream.
I've eaten a lot of gelato and sorbet in my life but nothing can prepare you for the incendiary magic they have behind the glass case here. I always get a pint of the plain and a pint of the chocolate peanut butter. It's rather embarrassing but a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do.
Don't worry. If I see the homeless man again, I will buy him another footlong. He was quite happy and you can't begrudge a man a sandwich when you're toting two pints of ice cream, can you?
Fist, the name of this place is confusing, This place is also known as "Micky and Sam's Ice Cream"; with a separate Yep page: http://www.yelp.com/bi...
I think it is primarily a Gelato store that has added other foods to help pay the bills.
The Gelato is good and reasonably fresh. There are a good variety of flavors but none as complex or creative as you can find at Pazzo or Scoops. The gelato is creamy and full flavored and the prices are 10-20% lower than the higher end Gelato places in LA.
Soup is still great. But the lavash bread that they changed to leaves A LOT to be desired. Have had the sandwich twice since the old glory days, and I'm not as in love with their (baked) falafel anymore. It would be worth it to bring your own pita (from Papa Cristo's) or perhaps order it as a plate instead of a sandwich. The place is so high quality- they need to bring in some better (fresh?) bread.

Healthy, tasty, decadent.
Baked-falafel! Tastes as great as regular falafel but with half the fat.… Read more »
Drunk on cheap beer pounded down at a laundromat, I stumbled out into the dark night with some cash in my pocket and a hunger in my belly.
Sunset Blvd beckoned. The night sidewalk was full of transients and long legged women. West or East? East or West?
Turning in the direction that the lights shined brightest, I dipped my weight forward and was carried several blocks towards the winding Sunset Strip.
And there it glimmered, like a blurry star, in a modern soulless strip mall-- the nights salvation.
I made my way inside. Banks of Gelato and homemade ice-cream lined up underneath the glass counter like an opened box of crayons. Affordable sandwich combinations dotted the menu on the wall. There were health bars arranged in a corner display as well as a cart of tabloid magazines to whisk one away into a land of shiny paged fantasy.
Then I looked up and saw him. The smiling man behind the counter. He seemed gentle and kind. He looked right through me. He could tell I was drunk, hungry, and alone-- seeking only the solace of a hot meal and a warm place to eat it.
I ordered up a baked falafel sandwich. He didn't ask for money but offered my tired feet a rest. "Sit down" he said, gesturing toward a table.
And before I could even read the first sentence of the most recent LA weekly that was so graciously provided, my food was presented. It couldn't have taken more than 90 seconds. It was as if he had predicted my arrival.
The sandwich was hot and fresh. The bread was nothing much--decent quality, nicely toasted, but did it's job by hugging together two very fresh falafel balls all cozied up with thinly sliced cucumber, tomato, and a lovely yogurt sauce. A heaping stack of sliced pickles balanced out the plate.
I devoured that sandwich as if it were a desert mirage. It was just spicy enough, the falafel was perfectly soft and a little crunchy, the cucumber was fresh. I felt healthy again. Alert. Sober.
After perusing the fresh fruit and smoothie menu, I opted for a taste of Gelato. My host was more than happy to spoon over samples of the forest berries flavor and another flavor starting with a Z, which involved a mix of honey and exotic fruit.
Alas, although creamy enough, the flavors were disappointingly bland. Perhaps it was a fluke.
This kind gentleman never even mentioned the bill, so before I left I asked him what the damage was. It came to $5.95. I gave him a generous tip for his kindness and walked off once more into the night, only this time as straight as an arrow.

Best ice cream in LA. And it comes with a smile.
Was jonesin for some ice cream one night after dinner with two of my lovely friends that love to food safari with me.
Drove up and down sunset, how can they not have an ice cream place? WAIT!!! THAT SIGN SAYS ICE CREAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! sharp turn, in the parking lot, drove around FOUND IT!!!!
So I walk in, and theres a bunch of people that come in and out of the ice cream store. They also have food, and a couple people order it. I ask to try some flavors and set my mind on CHIPMUNK FLAVOR!!! Holy crap, it's to die for, kind of like can I swim in a tub and eat it for the rest of my life. And rest easy, there are no chipmunk chunks in the ice cream, or anything tasting like a chipmunk (not that I'd know what ... chipmunk...tastes...like...)
But anyway it was decadent, exquisite, all things a chipmunk might taste like. Especially growing up watching Alvin and the Chipmunks. The best part of the whole place is how moms and poppsy it is, they home make their own gelato.
Apparently, they also have some delicious cookies, cuz girl walked in and bought everything and commented on how good they were. Thanks for telling me about how wonderful they are and not leaving any for me to buy. TRY CHIPMUNK FLAVOR!!!
If I had a handful of sparkles and I could only shower one place with my glitter of affection, it'd be Ice Cream Plus.
I don't know what's better -- the ever-revolving ice cream flavors that come in regular, no-sugar-added, AND dairy free (whheeeeee!!!!), or the fact that they also offer lunch! Either way, Krissy M. scores.
Thank you, Ice Cream Plus... For being my shining beacon of chocolate-covered hope in a sea of ubiquitous Coldstones and Pinkberrys.
Now you can join the ranks of my other much-loved chocolate-covered shining beacon of hope, presumptive President Barack Obama. ;-)
Ice Cream, Plus
- every energy bar, granola bar, diet bar, or protein bar known to man
- custom juice bar with exciting guest-stars like ginger, beets, and herbs for much less $ than Jamba Juice
- good sandwiches, even better salad/sandwich, soup/sandwich, salad/soup combos
- really amazing lentil soup (it's listed as a soup-of-the-day, but pretty much every day ending in Y is Lentil Soup Day)
- Diet Cookies (???)
- copious vegetarian options
- adorable staff (I think this place is family owned-- the counter kids are delightful)
All in all, a great choice if you work around the Sunset Strip and want a reprieve from the McLoco-Way fast-food trifecta.
Let me preface by saying this wonderful place was already reviewed as Mickey & Sam's (a better name IMHO).
This hidden gem is a mom & pop ice cream joint par excellence. They serve all home-made gelato in the vein of Scoop's, but with more of an emphasis on texture and uniformity of flavor. Though the flavors aren't as inventive as Scoop's, they're definitely more homey and unique than most. Try chipmunk, milky way, and almond crunch and rum. They also make vegan-friendly and no-sugar flavors. As with Scoop's, the owner is a delightful, friendly fellow, who always greets with a smile.
But they don't only make ice cream! For a light meal you can get wraps, sandwiches just like mom used to make, huge salads, and excellent home-style vegetarian lentil soup. Don't forget the homemade chocolate chip cookies and made-to-order smoothies. There's even a huge rack of health bars.
Ice Cream Plus is definitely a local favorite but they deserve more business!
I LOVE THIS PLACE!! Their gelatos are freakin' fantastic. Chipmunk is my favorite, possibly because it's fun to order anything called Chipmunk. They pass my pistachio test with flying colors (it's my favorite and I order it the first time I go to any new gelato place), and they have another flavor I really love, and I can't remember the name, but it's a lot like Zamboni. But it's not. But if you remember "Zamboni" and you go in, I think you'll figure it out, and you'll remember, "Hey, Amy S. said this was FANTASTIC."
They're not open Sundays, and they're cash-only, so those are my only complaints.
My husband used to live down the street from this place. I think it's good we moved. The gelato is unbelievable - as in, I really can't believe that chocolate peanut butter flavor is non-dairy. Seriously, what do they put in that? I also second Amy S's plugs for chipmunk and the flavor heretofore to be known as zamboni.
The other really cool thing about this place is that they will make you a sandwich with two different halves. Like, if you feel kind of like roast beef but kind of like egg salad, they will make you (fresh! not taking apart two old sandwiches) a sandwich that is half and half. It's not something I do often, but it sure is a nice option. Their sandwiches always taste really healthy, too - lots of sprouts and stuff. Yum. Someone needs to get out in front of the McDonald's in that complex with a sandwich board and reroute traffic. Fight obesity in America with delicious gelato and falafel!
One tip - the parking lot can be a nightmare. If you can walk over from somewhere else, do it.
If you are looking for a healthy, inexpensive meal, this is the place to go. They have great, freshly made smoothies, that don't include opening a bottle. Amazing soups, sandwiches and falafels too.
ive been going here for years (i think the owner has changed the names at least twice, maybe three times). this place is worth your time and money. the owner makes the ice cream himself (ive seen him crush the fruit). i love the texture of the yogurt flavors. the pistachio, apple, and pear will always be my favorite from here.
i dont know what the hell you guys were thinking, maybe you all grew up in some city where arabs and israelis never existed and the only thing you knew about falafel was that its made of chickpeas, but let me tell you . this is not a falafel joint.
I was craving one, had read other rieviews that raved about there middle eastern food and great ice cream. Well ice cream looked awesome, but I knew i was in trouble when the dude making the falafel was asian, and there was no frier, and he used lavash bread instead of pita to make my falafel. Will i go back? maybe for ice cream, but definitely not for anything middle eastern. Why couldnt he just stick to pad thai or tofu or something?
