Before you read this review, please understand that I am a Powerseller on eBay so I'm a bit biased.
Today, I went to this iSold It location to help with liquidating some of my excess inventory (I'm moving in a month and there's no way I can do it myself). To try it out, I took three items ranging from $300-$1200 (good business for them considering the crap around that store).
When I arrived, I was appalled by the chaotic mess around me. Broken refrigerators, automotive parts and whatever other disposables you could think of. I seriously thought I was in a scene from Sanford and Son! I immediately wondered if my valuables would even last the week they were on auction before the garbage monster would consume them.
Anyway, I was greeted by a pleasant gentleman who gave me their rehearsed spiel. Though I expected them to take a fair cut like 25-30%, he said that their cut in the end would be around 62%! Damn-o-rama! Now, I think the thing that upset me the most is that their brochure is very misleading. It quotes a slightly lower fee, but then has all that sordid fine print at the bottom that means they can nickel and dime you to hell. Ok, fine. Let's do it....I want to see what magic they can work for me (meanwhile, I was thinking how much money I would save if I just bit the bullet and did it myself).
After I agreed, the gentleman began to take my info (be sure to bring your driver's license). I gave him all the info I researched for each of the items (I know, I'm good like that). After I gave him all the info, I asked that he start the auction on a Thursday night and run it for 10 days (for those of you who do not know, this will give you two weekends of viewing time and will maximize your sale price...it's so worth the extra $.40). Anyway, the guy goes and tells me that he can't do it. They will only do 7 day auctions. What the hell? Not only that, he would start them today and it would end next Thursday (during off peak eBay time...hello? That's dumb). I told him that wouldn't suffice and that it would need to start on a Thursday night and end in 10 days on a Sunday night or I wouldn't sell. After some hoo ha, he said he would have to talk to his manager. At that point, I lost faith and decided I would spend the hour listing the items myself. Before he could return, I grabbed my stuff and walked briskly out never to return again.
Now, do I think that this place is completely out of the question? Well, no. I think it's great for those who have little to no computer skills and have lots of items of great worth where you could possibly negotiate a lower fee. However, if you do have any computer skills whatsoever, I highly recommend you do it yourself or take a look at eBay's Trading Assistant Program. You'll find lots of local sellers who can help you sell your stuff and will probably do it for half the cost of a brick and mortar resale store like iSold It.
