Getting your haircut when you're a dude with long hair is tough. Rather than spend $150 bucks at some insane salon in SoHo, to walk out looking like Ashton Kutcher, this place gives a solid guy's cut for 40 bucks, and you still look like a guy when you leave. When I was at NYU I found this place when I was in a hurry. I have gone back ever since. It's easily accessible from union square. The shampoo ladies will massage your scalp for longer than the average place, and everyone there is always smiling. The only downside are the annoying flatscreen tv's playing bad ads all the time. Can't vouch for the ladies, but suffice to say, I have never seen someone leave this place unhappy. Oh, and most of the time, I just walk in, I never make appointments and somehow my stylist always can squeeze me in.

I read the salon by Haley P and just had to write one. I'm hoping that her experience was just a fluke. I went to iSalon for over 2 year when I lived in the East Village and they did a great job with my blonde highlights. I always saw Dorris and it was never over $200. Granted, the last time I was there was 2 years ago, I still go back when I'm in town. If you're doing something easy with your hair (covering grey, simple highlights, a solid color) I would recommend iSalon for a good job at a reasonable price.
ps: the woman who does eyebrow threading is also really good for eyebrows.

I'd never want to see this place and Dorris who did my eyelash extension. I was looking for a salon where they can do an eyelash extension. From where I come from, eyelash extension is very popular, and same as getting your hair colored. I found this place because they offered the service for $45. I didn't have a good start when I made the apt. No one spoke proper English, and took them 10 minutes to understood what I was saying. I called twice to check how long it will take and how much for the eyelash extension. They told me 20-30 min and $45. The moment I arrived at the salon, I already had a bad feeling. It was unorganized and messy. Dorris who was my stylist started telling me there's 2 different eye-lash extension process. But no words on price or time it'll take for these processes. Who would have thought it will cost 3 times more than what you've been told. Of course, Doris does not tell me the cost difference or the time that will take for each process, and she offered the individual process. So, as a first timer to experience eye-lash extension, I went with what she offered without knowing much. She didn't explain much with what she was going to do to my eyes, or how this process is done. She told me to lay in a small, dirty, and messy bed and close my eyes. With a fear of not knowing what is going on, she stuffed a hard paper tape between my eyes. Short while she started putting extensions into my eyes, she left me lying in bed with my eyes closed for more than 10 min. This happened about 3 times which was already 30 minutes of loss time. I was there with my mother in law, and she started to believe Doris has ADHD, because this woman can't sit still for more than 15 min. By the time she completed my both eyes, it took more than 1 hour. I also told her not to put any more extension because I felt it was getting too much. She didn't listen, and forced me to lay still so that she can continue putting more extension on my eyes. My eyes look like bushes, or more like I have a disease that grows extra hair in eyes or something. I looked way too unnatural. So, finally the payment time, and I had $45 + tip ready in my hand. Dorris told me it's $180. I became speechless, and told her how I was told it's $45 over the phone. She said, that's a price for 30 min job. For you, it took more than 1 hour and it was individual process. I never asked her to do more than 30 min, and I told her even towards the middle of the process to stop. She just forced me to lay there for more than an hour, and charged me more than 3 times the price I was originally told. She even begged for a tip for the worst service I've ever had. With the same kind of eyelash extension, it only cost $60 where I come from. I'm never going to trust anyone who doesn't understand English well enough at the salon like this in the future.

You couldn't pay me to go back to this place... I got the brilliant idea to go blonde and this was the first place I saw. I was there for hours and they did such a terrible job on everything... when I had the consultation they told me it would be a double process. I really don't think they should have charged me extra when they made an error in judgement. It ended up being a triple or quadruple process, plus they used a toner that burned my eyes and throat and left me unable to breathe comfortably for 10 minutes.
The worst part is it cost me $450. If I had left with a lovely blonde color, then maybe it would have been worth it. When I left my hair was brassy, YELLOW and damaged. When the guy started blow drying my hair he giggled and said, "Usually hair starts breaking at this point." Fortunately, that wasn't the case, but my hair felt like straw.
My best friend went to Colorworks (now Dramatics). It was cheaper then, but she left paying under $200 and her hair was a lovely honey blonde with highlights and lowlights even though her hair is much darker than mine.
Edit: This happened last year, so my hair is now as good as new. : )
