1 review for I Love Sushi
This new sushi restaurant is in the location of Jason's, that moved to Greenbrae. In fact, his mother runs it, after a ill-fated hamburger place closed down there, run by his dad. It is actually called I (heart) sushi, but there is no symbol for it on the keyboard.
It has around 8 booths and ten tables. It is brightly lit, maybe a bit too much in the evening. It would be nice if they moved the Italian column with fake flowers on it, away, and replaced it with a Japanese screen to separate those two tables, and perhaps lowered the tract lighting a bit. The paper globes are a nice touch.
No sushi Bar. Just the cook, prep area with a bit of fish in a case. It advertises a Sake bar, but no bar to be seen.
I really really wanted to like this place. Some items were very nice. The salad was crisp cold with a nice sesame dressing. The miso soup was not overly salty. They carve a cute little carrot butterfly that sits upon the wasabi ball.
The rest was not so great. Their rice for the nigiri is on the sweet side, some may like that, I don't and it was mushy.
I was very much looking forward to the tuna poke that sounded great. I took one bite, and was shocked at how cloyingly sweet it was. Too much so! The sweetness caught in my throat. I was thinking, "did they put sugar in this? What?!? I talked with the wait person and she went back and talked with the chef. Then the wait person talked with Jason's Mom. Turns out it is the tobiko! Seriously, it was as if someone had poured granulated sugar on top of the dish. It was inedible :( The chef comes and talks with me, says it must be the tin of tobiko they got. I'm thinking...." Hello? Don't you 1) taste the product when you get it, and 2) Don't you taste the dish before you present it?" In all my years of eating sushi, I have never come across sugary tobiko.
They took it away and graciously took it off my bill. Two bites was too much of that dish!
The hamachi had a bit refrigerator taste, but the sake and tai was nice, though again, the sweet overcooked rice spoiled it. They said the fresh fish had not come in today. Make note to self, try this place again on a Tuesday.
I really want this place to make it, but things have got to be ironed out first. I will try it again, but not right away.
Right now, I do not (heart) their sushi.
