I love this place! It is so yummy and the new owners are really nice. I like the Rebel Yelp and the Chili Cheese weenie, personally. I haven't been to the weenie brunch on Sunday yet but the menu looks really really good.
It's great for a fast cheap lunch. I am hoping they take my weenie suggestions, they need a mexican weenie of some sort, just sayin! -

Note the new address above for I Dream of Weenie, it's NOT where most people still assume it is, at its former long time location on Woodland Street, between the antique shop Wonders on Woodland and the Art and Intervention Gallery. The VW bus has moved (probably around the summer of 2011) and I Dream of Weenie is now around the corner, up the hill on 11th, next to Bongo Java and across from Pied Piper Creamery.
I was told there are new owners or managers or both there, but that doesn't seem to affect the taste of the hot dogs. I know there are more items on the menu, but I always have the same menu items there. The dogs with pimento or Chow Chow still taste the same to me now as they did before. What's cool about I Dream of Weenie are the unique toppings, but their hotdogs themselves are just okay...not bad, but nothing special. I've always liked The Dog of Nashville and Hot Diggity Dogs better for the quality of the weenie; those two places just don't have the interesting toppings and toppings combos IDoW does.
I know many people think the new location is great and better but I don't agree. That may be true for locals or those who frequent the area. For those who are just driving by, the original location right on the main thoroughfare of Woodland street, was ideal. I know that's why I first stopped over 3 years ago, I'd never heard of the place but was leaving Batter'd & Fried and just happened to spot it. IDoW lost some of it's Freudian appeal by moving as well. In the old location, there was a shaved ice stand in the gallery parking lot next door called Jolly Rogue's New Orleans Sneaux Balls. Many a cheesy nerd (me included) got a kick out of positioning themselves in between the two signs, I Dream of Weenie and Sneaux Balls, and having their sexual-innuendo photo taken. In fact, I remember a guy who even did that with a sly smirk on his face and a weenie in one hand and a snow ball cone in the other. I think that location enhanced business for both! -

I'm a little disappointed with the new ownership of this place. Before this place gave the feeling of passionate ownership that truly loved what they were doing each day (even if it was just hot dogs). They were friendly to every one of their customers and seemed to appreciate each one of us supporting their business. On top of that, the daily dogs were much more creative than they've been recently.
While it seems like hot dogs should be easy to cook, the way these dogs are prepared just isnt the same. I feel like the quality has decreased in recent months. While this isnt a bad place to frequent at all, the luster of the I Dream of Weenie stand has been lacking. The staff and quality of food aren't nearly as inviting as they used to be.
I can't say I won't come here again because I truly want this place to succeed. Hopefully the new ownership realizes that customers can tell when things go down hill and they decide to pick back up the character of the previous owner.Listed in: I'm a fan of the East side.

This place is no joke. All I can say is, the Pimento Cheese Turkey Weenie(or regular Beef Weenie, for that matter) is to die for, especially with their spicy mustard. I was so sad when they closed, and so excited when I saw they had reopened just around the corner!! My only issue is that they have crazy inconvenient hours of operation. I often find my self hungry & driving by only to see that they have closed up at 2:30 or 3pm... Extend those business hours!! Please? Oh, the other issue I have is that they are cash only. I mean, it is to be expected if you really think about it, since they are operating out of an old bus/van, but when I get all psyched up for IDOW & realize once I get there I have no cash, it's a bummer :/

Posers...
Really frustrating to see someone cry local this and local that and then see this huge Sysco truck offloading cases of hot dogs, buns, the super eco friendly foam containers, just to name a few... Yes, Robert Orr SYSCO is a local company but the crap they sell has a carbon foot print that would make the jet setting Al Gore blush.
The hot dogs are mass produced with low quality ingredients. Where? Whatever factory makes them (SYSCO) the best deal, and I seriously doubt it is even in this region, let alone - local.
Top that off with the fact that I am paying over $2.00 for the same, if not worse, hot dog that I can get two of at any gas station for the same price.. shameful.
Oh, but wait... They do have Tenn. Chow Chow.... Whatever.
The VW Bus is cool, but could be so much cooler with a little more imagination or thought.Comment from Leslie A. of I Dream of Weenie 10/15/2011

First off, let me just say, I love hotdogs. I'm not sure anyone else loves hotdogs more than me. haha. I visited I Dream of Weenie a little bit before Halloween and was thrilled with their topping options. It should not disappoint. I will definitely be stopping by this again whenever I'm in East Nashville.

Be forewarned: If the name of your business is a pun, I will be there.
I had the Rebel Yelp dog and it was so damn delicious. I have to be in the mood for a hot dog, but if that said mood strikes again, I'll be going back to this place.
Best part of Weenie: Your choice of beef, turkey, and veggie dogs! PLUS white or wheat buns! -

oh my, how could i not have reviewed i dream of weenie before?! before i moved to nashville, learning about a converted vw bus that sells hot dogs that you can eat while sitting on the grass... well, that was a selling point.
a few months ago, it was closed, and i thought might be gone... but no, a new owner took over and moved it just up the alley, and all is well, and in fact, better than ever.
the hot dogs are good. the bread is good. there's always a daily special, but i usually end up with a chili cheese dog anyway. they have canned soda, and new on the menu are daily salads, like the awesome feta slaw i had a while back. and lots of choices.
i think they've expanded the hours a bit, too, though usually i'm just dropping by at lunch time. it's good stuff, and super family friendly. they even have a bin of blankets you can use to sit on the grass.
and if you ask about the nubbins, they'll think you're from the 'hood. (and no, i will not tell you what that means ;^)
(many of us are hoping they'll dump the styrofoam boxes, though.) -

I dropped by for a bite to eat for lunch. An interesting place to visit just to see the establishment.
Pros: An decent assortment of hot dogs and fillings available, a unique looking establishment and a place to take tourists. Great name.
Cons: I went to I Dream Of Weenie to review the food/experience. I expected the best tasting hot dog on the planet the way people talk this place up but I was not convinced this is the case. Serving size is not everything but mine was pretty small and the dogs are a little pricey for what you get. -
Review from Eliza R.
I always have an issue with hot dog places because they take the simplest food that anyone can make, slap some toppings on it, then jack up the price. However, for a hot dog stand, I Dream of Weenie really is a-ok. I begrudgingly bought a "Farmers' Market" dog for $4, which was a turkey dog on a whole wheat bun with lettuce, tomato and some sort of spicy mayo. It was decent, but not mind-blowing! The toppings do get pretty creative, however, and I think it's awesome that it's inside an old VW bus... so I have to give them props for that!

After years of driving by I Dream of Weenie right after I had eaten or running by it during a run...I figured today was the day to take the plunge.
It's in an old VW bus - that much you know.
There's "no seating" - that much you know as well...except it really isn't true. Fanny's House of Music next door has allowed their property to be used for seating...they have a picnic table with an umbrella and several other umbrellas for spreading out with a blanket (which IDOW graciously provides). So don't let the "no seating" part fool you - there's seating, it's just not of the traditional variety. You aren't going to have to stand and eat your weiner.
The menu isn't nearly as large as Cori's Dog House or even The Dog of Nashville...it only features a few dogs. The hot dog I ordered was the Rebel Yelp (I figured since I'd be reviewing on Yelp, it'd be a pretty apropro item to order) and a side order of feta slaw (the day's special). After waiting about 5 minutes for the dog to be grilled (grilled, not steamed), I received my slaw and dog. The Rebel Yelp was covered with chow-chow, red onions and jalapenos...the hot dog itself was not necessarily large, however. Of the three "wieneries" that I've experienced in Nashville, IDOW definitely has the smallest weiners. The dog itself, however, was extremely flavorful - all of the ingredients complimented each other nicely...it had a nice sweet spiciness to it and the dog itself was definitely of the high quality variety. The bun, which I believe comes from Provence, was soft and about perfect. Altogether, it was a well-put together weiner.
As for the feta slaw, it was fantastic. Basically, it was slaw in a light vinegarettish dressing with feta thrown in. It tasted fantastic...and light...which was surprising considering that the other two establishments that I've tried tend to roll with the fried twinkies and bacon covered hot dogs...
Of the three hot dog establishments I've tried in Nashville (Cori's, The Dog and IDOW), I Dream of Weenie appears to be the only one that does not have their heart set on making you bust a coronary (get it? Heart? Coronary?)Listed in: Weinerquest

i'm no dog afficionado by any means, but i love their dogs. i get the tofu dog (hubby gets the deceased-animal kind) & they are delicious (hubby says beef is too). the number of ways you can get your dog is unbelievable. I had no idea there were so many! the dogs aren't huge but they're priced so that i can buy 2 if i'm starving. I do wish they didn't use styrofoam containers but so many places do that i can't fault them alone for it. i merely take them home, rinse, & recycle.

Five stars for the creativity of the food!
Five stars for the old VW Bus it's inside of!
Five stars for the location!
Five stars for the name!
Where do I start? Basic dog and toppings, 5 stars. But then you get items like the breakfast dog, bbq dog, etc. Chorizo on a dog in the morning, it's perfect. After you get your dog you can either eat in the community garden or hang on the lawn with other meat lovers. The place has absolutely nothing wrong with it and I love it, LOVE IT!
Also check out the New Orleans shaved ice next to it. So many flavors to choose from not to mention it's a life saver, literally, on a hot day. 5 stars for him too! -

I first reviewed I Dream of Weenie with 4 stars and and it they absolutely deserved it. That was however under the previous owners. The new owner, apparently some lady and her kids have changed the whole feel of the attitude that comes from the bus. Even the food has fallen off greatly. The buns used to be fresh, soft and not soggy; now the last several times I have been under this new ownership the buns taste like a different brand, generally hard and stale or pretty soggy so that my hot dog breaks out the bottom - complete mess...Also the last two times I have been my hot-dogs were completely charred. Even the overload of toppings I had couldn't cover the charred taste. The 'hot dogs of the week' are not as inventive as they were under previous ownership. The PIZZA hot-dog...really? The kid that runs the window is just sort of a dud, and apparently not on his game when he comes to work. A customer in front of us paid and the hot-dog kid returned the incorrect amount of change and briefly had a dispute over the amount of money that was given. Even George Michael had more character while running the banana stand (If you get the A.D. reference). So in the end, yes the hot-dogs have now become just another hot-dog. The VW bus may be fun for newcomers and tourist, but for us who've had the great hot-dogs that used to come from this place, it's disappointing to see it fall off like this due to the new ownership. Maybe it's time to put that VW bus back to work for what it was designed; driving.

Review from Matt L.
When I first heard of I Dream of Weenie, I considered it a gimmick, partially for the name, and partially for the fact that it's an old VW van on the East Side. However, as I was driving down Woodland, I ran right by it, and could not resist the opportunity to give it a try. I was not disappointed.
Unlike a lot of hot dog stands, IDOW does not take the easy route and steam their dogs. The place actually built a charcoal grill into the stand and roast all of their dogs: that's dedication. For buns, they use artesian bread baked in Nashville: genius. The bun is the absolute best in Nashville. And unlike most sit-down place, the prices were relatively inexpensive. $2.50 for a dog with ketchup and onions was very fair for the experience.
Unfortunately, dumb city ordinances forbid the stand dedicated seating, but, coincidentally, the house next door has a picnic table right in the front yard, and doesn't seem to mind hot doggers using it. The stand also offers a tub with blankets in case customer wish to spread one on the ground and eat in true picnic fashion.
Good dogs, great buns, and a unique experience make IDOW a fun place to visit with the kids, and overcomes a potentially cheesy gimmick by being friendly, customer service-oriented, and tasty.Listed in: Best Hot Dogs in Nashville

So if you're a fan of the hot dog, there's only one "mobile food vendor" in East Nashville you need worry about. I Dream of Weenie is an old renovated VW bus and self-billed as Nashville's only full-service weenery. The bus is set in a wooden deck and anything but mobile, but Nashville public code prevents the hot dog stand from providing seating. However, a lovely little picnic table just happens to be located right next door that owners insist anyone may use.
As for the dogs themselves, I Dream of Weenie provides a surprisingly diverse selection of flavors. Each day (excluding Sunday, when they are closed), the Weenery offers a "Daily Dream." The best of these is the Muffuletta, which is topped with a delicious combination of olives and cheese. As far as regularly offered hot dogs, some of the best include the Rebel Yelp (probably a 9 on the spicy scale) and the Pimento Cheese Dog. Tofu dogs and bratwursts are also available, though sides and drinks are extremely limited; potato chips and your basic soda selection are all you get.
I Dream of Weenie's poorest feature is probably their limited hours--the dog peddlers close at 3:00 PM on weekdays. Nevertheless, the management and employees are extremely welcoming and willing to chat. I recommend hitting the weenery on a casual Saturday afternoon. I've never seen such ideal picnic cuisine. -

I'm with Matt C, call me a dog snob, but no char here, no snap, nothing special about the dog... it's just a dog.
Sorry, but this is average.
Now, the name is incredibly clever and the VW is totally rad. But that doesn't change the dogs.
I wish that I Dream of Weenie could hang with dogs in Chicago, or NYC, or anywhere really... but I have to say I've had a lot better. -

I just like driving people by so they can read the sign "full service weenery". You definitely can't say these guys take themselves to seriously eh? I mean they grill their dogs in the back of a hollowed out VW bus and you order them from the rear passenger window.
The fun of it is that hot dogs aren't really restaurant food right? I mean their cook out food, ball game food, eat out doors in the elements food right? I don't think I've ever had a very dynamic indoor hot dog experience which is why a full service weenery with picnic tables and table cloths for picnicking on the ground is just ingenious to me.
In addition they offer a full service array of flavors, toppings, themes, all the hot dog bells and whistles. Why only 4 stars? My hang up is that I really prefer french fries to chips with my dog and they didn't put a friar in that VW bus of theirs. Secondly, they serve their soda in a can and I am partial to fountain. All in all I am a fan of the weenery and all my hot dog business goes to them but man what I wouldn't do for fountain root beer to go with their muffaleta dog. -

Talk about a gimmick, these people grabbed an idea and ran with it. I love the VW bus this place is ran out of, its cute and cheery and their full service weenery sign is delightful. Too bad their food can't really match up to their creativity. I embarrassingly enjoy hot dogs more than I should for my age and I was very excited to learn about this weenie stand in East Nashville.
Their menu hosts some interesting sounding topping combinations for dogs but for whatever reason the flavor just really isn't there. I mean they don't taste like crap, but its really nothing better than store bought dogs and canned chili you can cook yourself at home. The price also doesn't really match up to what you get.
Also at least in my expereinces, the staff are ridiculously rude. They only accept cash and god forbid you show up not knowing this and DARE ask them if they take credit cards. At the time they had no sign stating cash only although that may have changed.
Also they got my order wrong but it weirdly seemed like it was done on purpose. The styrofoam containers the dogs were put in were labeled correctly, but what I actually got was completely different. Unfortunatly for me I didn't realize this until I got back to work and by then I didn't have time to deal with it. -

Leave it to East Nasty to have a Hippy Volkswagen selling Hot Dogs and... I'm in love. The lady (with the dreads) was extremely nice and told me I could walk around the courtyard behind the Van with my dog. She even cut small pieces of the hot dog and fed it to my puppy. Take a blanket, your dog, and your ipod and you'll fall in love too. Perfect touch to East Nashville.

Yet another hotdog-only restaurant in Nashville, except this one has the most character of any hotdog place in Nashville (it is located in the Five Points area, how could it not have a lot of character!). It is basically a VW bus with a wooden deck built onto the side of it. No inside dining here!
This is one of those places that looks so funky, you just have to stop and check it out. Plus, the name "I Dream of Weenie" is outrageous. For vegetarians they offer a tofu dog, but I think I will pass on that one, thanks. I had the Rebel Yelp, which comes with Chow Chow mustard and jalapeños. Really good, but super hot! The guys in the stand are super friendly. Parents should take their kids to this place, as it is sure to be a memorable experience for the little ones... I mean, what could be cooler as a kid than getting a dog at a place as funny as this, right? -

I Dream of Weenie, indeed. And there's tshirts! T-freaking-shirts that say 'I Dream of Weenie'!
And this place had a Yelp! sticker too! The scout wants a sticker! ;-)
When I heard from a friend that the place was located in an old van, I gave him the eyes. The, 'you're out of your friggen little mind' eyes. Only a boy would eat out of a van right?
Wrong, it's worth standing in 17 degree winds to get one of these bad boys. And it's more of a trailor.
When we first walked past the place we chose to go in the antique shop next door first, then get our dog next. When we finally got to the window the girl working told me how sad it made her when we walked by.
God, I love this place. -

Are their hot dogs amazing? YES
Is it a completely adorable set up and concept? YES
Should you go on the weekend if you are hungry? NO
Saturday I took a starving ten year old to this favorite local weenie stand after a nice morning at the Frist Museum.
We each ordered a tofu hot dog. It was 50 minutes before our order came up. NOT exaggerating. There were at least 10 people that ordered after us that got their food first.
This was a bit alarming but I didnt make a big deal out of it, frankly I was too hungry and quite tired at that point.
They need to get a more organized system and a few more staff members....
will I go back?
Of course... no one else in town has a dog quite like them...
I just hope next time I can get one in under 30 minutes.... -

Nashville, TN
I love a good hot dog and I was truly excited to see the addition of the big yellow VW van/hotdog shack to the 5 points areas. I was a little disappointed to see that they only offer 6 types of hotdogs (available in beef, turkey or tofu dog style). These dogs didn't really remind me of the classics - with onions, relish, sauerkraut, etc. I had two dogs - one with mustard, onions, chow chow, and jalapenos, and the second with some other stuff that I can't remember right now. They are served on buttery buns from Provence - awesome - and are charcoal grilled - double awesome. All said, I didn't have any trouble finishing them.
The problem, beyond the lack of selection is the lack of seating. Since this is a "mobile" food establishment no seating is allowed. It's a dumb rule. Most people sit in the grass under this shady tree or on the wall between the sidewalk and the lawn.
I'm really looking forward to going back and trying more of their dogs - although, with such short hours of operation, that can be tough. -

Saratoga Springs, NY
I Dream offers 3 kinds of weenie, (beef, turkey, and no dog) with all kinds of interesting toppings. I had the muffaletta dog, and a hot chili dog. Both loaded with fresh and prepared toppings. All together we had 7 dogs, everybody was thrilled and the total with drinks was about $25.
The VW microbus made this place earn a special place in my heart, and you get the feeling this is a place that loves what they do. They do it with style, and fun. This is why I like Yelp because people should not keep places like this to themselves.
It was a little cold for the day after thanksgiving, and we ended up getting them to eat at home because as some of the others have mentioned there is limited seating, or on the grass. I would imagine most of the year that would be fun but today it didn't work. -

If you've ever seen Alisa's hot dog themed burlesque number, you know she takes hot dogs seriously! This weenie wagon in the yard of the Garage Mahal is a great addition to the 5 Points area - another East Nashville friend I'm glad to give my business to. They have a handful of menu options and then a few special dogs that change regularly. I had a veggie dog with mustard & kraut on it and it was delish! The roll is a great improvement over the standard bun. My dog & a bag of chips came to $3.75 - I have a feeling this lunch option will become a favorite since I can walk there from home! I look forward to trying some of the more adventurous wonders of the weenie world...

After spending most of my 20s eating out of a can, frozen dinners and hot dogs you'd think the last spot on earth I would want to eat is a hot dog stand. But this one is really makes the most out of a simple food. Great catchy name and appealing set up make this place fun and affordable to go grab a dog or two for lunch. Another great dog at the full service weenerie this weekend. I had the Tennessee Chow-Chow. It's a special relish you can only get here in TN and I don't really know what's in it, but it's tasty and spicy. My mom and I sat in Arthouse Gardens and enjoyed the atmosphere. In case you're wondering why all the neighbors have seating for IDOW, it's because TN has classified it as a mobile vendor and it can't have it's own seating. They do offer blankets for your own picnic.

If I were to take up for a moment the magical hooded vestment of the dog snob, I'd have to say this is a 3-star decent hot-dog purveyor in a suped-up cart at a great location with green sward and shady tree. My dog did not have much of the snap of natural casing, nor was it charred, but it was still good. I had the kraut. The sauerkraut was cold, as was the bun; but the mustard was pretty good. So in other words, this is more akin to a street vendor than a gourmet grill. If you didn't know that, the nice low price (most are $2.75) would tell you. They charge $ .50 for a pickle spear if it doesn't come with your dog (i.e. if you don't order "the Dill"). Cans of soda are $1. Bratwurst is a dollar more than normal hot dogs. It can get a little "gourmet" with the daily specials like pineapple-salsa dogs or greek dogs (feta, SD tomatoes and olives). An interesting offer is a "double" hot dog with two wieners, one bun, for an extra $1.25.

I like a big weenie -- to eat (on a bun). I think this mini to-go stand has the best in East Nashville. Tofu dogs are best. If you are daring, ask for the "Rebel Yelp" Tennessee Chow Chow with jalapenos. That's one hot weenie! You can have one with sauerkraut, one with chili, several other choices. He had the turkey with slaw, then we walked across the street to the 5 Points post office to mail a letter, and he put it in the slot.
