Review from Stefan L.
Woodside, NY
Hands down my favorite restaurant in the Woodside area. I have taken at least 4 friends here in the 2 months I've lived in Woodside and they all agree that this place is awesome.
Their lunch special is a great deal, and their dinner portions, although a little more expensive, are enormous. I always have leftovers. The Pad Thai is my personal favorite, but they do pretty much all their meals well. Besides pad thai I would recommend the duck.
Since the portions are so large, and they are constantly taking delivery orders, it can sometimes take awhile to get your food, but nothing ridiculous. Just call ahead for take-out! -
Review from Anne H.
I decided to give I Am Thai another try.
I ordered the Spicy Noodle with fried tofu and my boyfriend ordered the Massaman Curry with friend tofu.
The food was very good. Spicy noodle came with lots of vegetables and I actually like the fried tofu as my meat much better than the shrimp I ordered in the past. Massaman curry was also very flavorful and tasty. The portion sizes was pretty large.
I think I didnt' like the pad thai my first time because I ordered it to go and by the time I ate it, the noodles were soggy.
My only complaint from my 2nd trip was that the service was very slow. From the time we places our order to when we got our food, it was probably about 30-35 minutes. Someone else you came in AFTER us even got their food BEFORE us by 10 minutes which irritated me.
But the waiter was very friendly and once we got our food, he was very attentive. And refilled our waters as soon as our glasses were empty.
Overall, good. I'm glad I gave it another try.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I LOVE I Am Thai! This is the place to go to if you want incredible "home cooked feel" Thai food. They use fresh ingredients and are very prompt with your order. I usually order for a pick up- I commute from Manhattan so once I'm above ground on the 7, I call in my order and then pick it up on my way home.
I've tried a couple of their dishes and they all taste really good. My favorite however, is the Peanut Noodle with shrimp. -

I am spicy.
I am yummy.
I am wallet-friendly.
I love the ground chicken with basil and fried egg over rice even tho I'm definitely must more of a noodle person. Pad Thai and drunken noodles are spot on. Not loving the Thai ice tea tho, it was way too sweet for me.
I will go again, I only wish it was closer to me. -

This place is wonderful. Decided to try it out after having gone to other thai places in the area. The interior is pretty awful for seating, but great for take-out/delivery!
Food is flavorful and staff is nice. The noodle dishes also have a generous portion of protein/veggies. -

Ordered for pick up: call ahead, takes about 20 mins.
Lunch specials (LS) come with veggie soup or salad with peanut Thai dressing. Chicken, fried tofu, steamed tofu, mixed veggies $5.95
Shrimp or beef $6.95
Shrimp pad thai (LS)
Fried tofu spicy noodle (LS)
Chicken Sam Yan noodle (kour gai) (LS)
Chicken red curry (LS)
Fried tofu pumpkin basil
Total for all that food: $36.75 (including tax)!
Veggie soup: MSG laden soup with veggies; I would pass.
Salad: Fresh, topped with bean sprouts, a tomato & cucumber slice, & Thai peanut dressing. No dead leaves in these salads.
Shrimp pad thai: average, less sugar than other pad thai, which is nice. Noodles were nice and springy, but it felt like something was lacking. The dish was good, as the shrimp was perfectly cooked & it was topped with lots of fresh bean sprouts, shredded carrots, and peanuts. However, I wouldn't say it's the best pad thai.
Fried tofu spicy noodle: average, spice is adjusted to the customer's taste. I ordered medium, which was quite spicy. The flavor of the dish relied too much on the spice for flavor. The flat noodles, mushroom, tofu, & broccoli were good, not overly oily like in some other restaurants. Again, good dish, but not amazing.
Chicken Sam Yan noodle: very good, just the perfect amount of sweet to salty ratio needed to make this dish delicious, which made this dish the best noodle dish I ordered. Again, not overly oily.
Chicken red curry: loaded with bamboo shoots and sweet bell pepper, this dish is much less creamy (less coconut milk) than in other Thai restaurants, which for me is a huge plus. The meat and bamboo shoots thoroughly soaked up the flavor of the curry, and they even packed it in a container with a separate compartment for the rice. Awesome dish.
Fried tofu pumpkin basil: I asked for no onions, so they substituted eggs (after asking permission). The subtle sweetness of pumpkin balanced perfectly with the saltiness of the dish. They were generous with the amount of tofu & egg. Delicious sauce.
Overall, generous portions for the price, which is rare for Thai. Delicious, healthier versions of Thai dishes offered at other restaurants. They gladly substitute ingredients (and even ask you to tell them if you don't like an ingredient on their website). Service was friendly and I got everything I ordered without any mistakes. They have about 4 tables next to their ordering counter. It definitely looked much better than I expected from a mainly takeout Thai place. I would definitely order here again; it was worth the 30 min drive & difficult street parking. -

I Am Not Thai, But I Like Thai Food.
I'm not very active on going to places to eat in my neighborhood as much as I'd like to but I've recently discovered this small Thai place that looks like a typical Chinese take-out/delivery place (which they do both) but on the inside, it looks like a upscale fast-food place with a flatscreen TV. Looks are, in fact, very deceiving.
The food is great here; I always order take-out and delivery, which they have a minimum of $10. The Pad Thai is one of the best I've had here; it is already a full meal that will leave you bloated. I'm not too sure about the Sam Yan noodle though, not a lot of flavoring and tastes exactly like the Chinese ho fun my grandma makes, just with eggs added to it.
I've never been much of a fan of Thai iced tea as it is too sweet for my taste but luckily they don't overdo the sugar here. Also, the mango tango is a nice dessert, just don't like the sticky rice on the bottom.
The staff is fine, I feel they're a little impatient and somewhat lazy. They don't like to explain entrees inclusively so they simply tell you to go online and check out their menu, which is not even complete in the first place. I didn't get my ice cream for my lunch special last time and they must expect me to eat with my hands because I NEVER give any flatware to eat with whenever I order the lunch special..kind of an indirect message of "you get what you pay for", so I am a little disappointed that I don't get my money worth to the max as I'd like. -
Review from Andrew A.
I've been here a couple of times now.. I really like this place. It's... i guess a fast food thai place - think more upscale chinese takeout. For appetizer - had the steamed vegetable rolls and spring rolls - both good. For my meal i had the tumeric chicken in peanut sauce..
To summarize - the food here is awesome, the people that work there are all really cool - they have pictures of the different dishes on the wall so you can see what you are getting. i definitely recommend this place! -
Review from Edward Alan B.
Sunnyside, Queens, NY
I Am Thai is pretty much at the end of my block, and being a lover of Thai food, I was really excited to see it when I moved to Sunnyside in November. Since then, I Am Thai has received at least 92% of my takeout business, and I haven't been disappointed a single time.
The food is always delicious. I've tried things from all areas of the menu, and I think I've tried every single noodle dish. It's all very different and very good! My favorites include: Vee Puffs (appetizer, comes with delicious sauce), Egg Noodle Basil (spicy, flavorful, filling), Rama Curry (a curry I wasn't used to, but surprisingly good), Sauteed Pumpkin Basil (any sauteed dish is great, but I love pumpkin), Pumpkin Basil Soup (very creamy and delicious, goes well with a rice dish), and Yellow Fried Rice (the flavor of this is the perfect curry). Of course, I always ask for everything spicy, and they do it really well. They also offer "Crispy Pork," which I hadn't had before, but it's really delicious and I'm always tempted to order it. It's kind of halfway between tender roast pork and bacon.
The portions are always satisfying. I usually get two meals out of what they give me, but sometimes I'll finish it in one sitting if I'm feeling particularly hungry. I think the prices are incredible for the quality and quantity of food.
Another thing about I Am Thai is that the owners/chefs are very, very friendly and welcoming. They always say hello when I come in and talk with me a bit. And they are very active on Facebook. They went on a trip to Bangkok recently and posted lots of pictures of their food adventures. They even brought back little souvenirs for customers who asked for them!
I Am Thai has great food at very affordable prices, and the owners are awesome people! I can't imagine Sunnyside without them! -

One benefit of being snow-trapped in Queens is being able to take advantage of restaurant's weekday lunch specials.
I stopped by "I Am Thai" for some lunch takeout and discovered they now have a weekday lunch special for $5.95; pick a choice of chicken, mixed vegetable, steamed tofu, or fried tofu in the dish. For beef, shrimp or king oyster mushroom it is $6.95. There are 18 dishes available.
Available Monday to Friday from 11am to 3:30pm.
Included is green Salad or house soup or ice cream! Yes, ice cream, so it is 25 degrees outside.
Today I had:
#1 - Roasted pork and gravy over rice- tasty pork, flavorful & delicious
#7 - Pad Thai- standard dish; fresh & delicious
#11- Pad se-ew- equivalent to the wide rice noodles but with the Thai touches; delicious
#18 - Green Curry- this my favor; hot and delectable.
These are lunch portions so they are small then the regular orders I get for dinner. For the price it is a great deal.Listed in: Feel like a King in Queens

I really wanted to love this place. I mean really really wanted to, that is until a staple was found in my man's pad see-ew :( Other than that I've had no complaints. It isn't THE BEST thai food per se. Again I've been so spoiled in San Francisco, but it definitely fixes the craving I have for thai. Anyone ever try their side order of coconut rice? If not, do so NOW! Love their sauteed eggplant. Singapore noodles. Pad see ew (minus the staple), green tea coconut smoothie, ny strip steak salad, mango with sticky rice. Yum! Damn that staple!!! But seriously, the best part is you can order online :D Woo hoo!

I Am Thai got a makeover - they now have 5 fancy new table setups inside, serving delicious eats on stylish dish-ware, and have a flatscreen TV. The other day when I stopped in for food to go, I ended up staying to watch Master Chef. It was kind of a controlled madhouse in there, lots of people coming in for pickup. Good to know they are getting great business, but could probably use a few extra hands, or another location. Food is still amazing, still my fav go-to spot in the hood.

Now that I'm no longer in delivery distance, I Am Thai is a spectre that haunts my existence. I am not in the least bit exaggerating when I say that I daydream about the Bangkok Deal, the Dagney Taggert of all Thai Food (please excuse the Ayn Rand reference...I just got done writing a review comparing Thai food to socialism). The dish, like the comparative Randian heroine, is direct and defiant, but not without its romance. I am actually torturing myself thinking about it.
Anyways, I've decided to upgrade I AM to five stars because I work by 9th ave and I live in Astoria, two areas which, if you were to type "Thai food" into google maps, would be pock-marked with dots. And true to my passion, I've not been slacking in trying a bunch of these places, none of which has left even a fraction of an imprint as I Am Thai.
It would be pertinent to admit that I am a spice junkie and no one dares tread the levels of my particular satisfaction as I Am does. Dropping back in one day while I was in the area, I actually had a chance to talk with the owner. He's a super friendly dude who knows that he's the only guy in town who allows such boldness, and he gave me some suggestions for other places that I should try (he used to own Yajai in Astoria).
Please, fans of really spicy Thai food, I implore you not to miss out on what is, I consider to be, one hell of a standout restaurant.Listed in: Sunnyside Digs, Thai food yo!

Review from Geoff O.
Woodside, NY
I was at first upset at the appearance I Am Thai, as it took the place of the neighborhood's best Chinese takeout joint. I have since been bowled over. The place has been gussied up a bit, although it's still obviously a mostly take-out joint. However, not only does I Am Thai feature delicious Thai food for excellent prices, but the menu is quite a nice piece of work as well.
Not only are there a lot of great choices at I am Thai, but there seems to be an array of choices that veer towards street food or more basic Thai cuisine than I am used to seeing. These include the $4.95 "Everyday Deal in Bangkok" which is ground basil chicken over rice topped with a fried egg. Delicious. An order of "Thai styled Chicken over yellow rice" saw a very simple, but nice chunk of chicken over rice. But, the menu also includes the more complex Thai dishes we're all used to.
A final note, I love any place that when I call with a stuffed-up nose to order delivery, the waiter instantly recommends the best soup and dishes for someone with a cold. "You'll feel better tomorrow," he promised. I did. -
Review from Irene F.
For the most part, I order from Dee. It's just better, for pretty much everything. However, sometimes I Am Thai is open when Dee is not, and sometimes, there are a few key items that I really crave on their menu.
Their pad thai is really mediocre, which is upsetting, but they make up for it with a MEAN ASS MOFO curry puff!! I have never had a better one anywhere, and trust, I have eaten more than my fair share of curry puffs. These are like crack!
The curry is pretty good, but the problem is, they never make it right. If I ask for medium, it burns my mouth off (an undesirable effect if you'd like me to taste your food), and if I ask for mild, it's bland (not much use either). This makes me a sad panda, because I really like curry. Guess Dee is going to be my fix for that, also.
I dig that they do free Thai iced tea coupons with their take out menus, kudos. Way better than a free soda!
Note: I've only had delivery, never actually been to the place, and they are usually fast, which is also clutch. -
Review from Amy S.
Long Island City, NY
Although I'm generally skeptical of most "takeout only" businesses, I Am Thai is easily one of the best Thai restaurants I've tried. If I don't feel like cooking or battling the crowds in Woodside at Sripraphai, it's our go-to Thai.
I've only tried a few dishes, but this is because they are so good I have tended to stick with them. The papaya salad is delicious, although sometimes a little heavy on the sauce (and if your spice tolerance is low to moderate, definitely ask for less spicy since they throw lots of chilis in there)! The curry puffs are to die fo: perfectly crispy on the outside and currily goodness on the inside-I don't know how they do it in a manner that sustains the puffyness of the puffs from the stovetop to your tabletop following delivery.
The pad thai is very reliable and I've had an eggplant basil stirfry that's pretty solid. Seriously, if you're new to the Sunnyside/Woodside area, get I Am Thai on speed dial for those nights when you just feel like relaxing at home. -
Review from Emily M.

Am I missing something here? Food is OK but really not great, especially since Woodside/Sunnyside is full of better thai places. When the pad thai isn't awesome, you know something is wrong. Try Dee Thai on QB.
Maybe I need to order something else? -
Review from Mel M.
Sunnyside, Queens, NY
I Am Thai is my go to delivery place when I am too tired to cook and don't want cereal for dinner (again). I made the mistake of moving out of Sunnyside a while back and I found myself craving I Am Thai like there was no tomorrow. The very first night I moved back, I called them up.
I Am Thai is the authentic Thai food you crave, delivered. In fact, if you haven't tried it yet, it's the authentic Thai food you didn't know that you craved until you had your first delicious bite. Nothing at all like the pathetic excuses for Thai cuisine in Manhattan. It's the real deal. The only thing more real is (1) sharing a home-cooked meal with your Thai family members or (2) actually going to Thailand.
They are dedicated to healthy cooking and fresh ingredients. They eco-conscious too (no paper napkins or disposable utensils unless you ask).
A couple recommendations: anything with that heavenly pumpkin, vegetable ginger soup (to cure all ills), spicy noodle, pad see ew, u-bol, green papaya salad... and of course mango sticky rice when it's in season. -

I am Thai reminds me of Bangkok street food... which is delicious. Emily M. is right in that the pad thai is not what you would expect but this is NOT the place to get pad thai! Get everything but!!! Simple, clean food and yeah, the folks that run the place are super nice. It was such a welcome addition to Thai in Woodside which I thought just ok before I am Thai and Dee opened up.
Bangkok everyday specials are the jam! I also like the breaded chicken with "chicken" rice. Very very tasty.
If you want your basic NYC-Thai standard do not go to I am Thai. If you want a taste of Bangkok without the travel time.. check it out. I tend to judge my Thai food by the quality of their curries, yum/salad and overall selection. With that in mind, I am Thai is very good. -
Review from Stephanie S.

This is my favorite Thai place on Sunnyside/Woodside. I prefer it to Dee on Queens Blvd. I usually order for pick up, but sometimes have it delivered. I love the spicy noodles (their version of drunken noodles). I also love their siam rolls. I get those each time I go there. I'm normally not a tofu fan, but the tamarind and peanut sauce is delicious.
There are four tables inside, but it's mainly a take-out place. The packaging is perfect for sitting in your couch, watching movies, and eating a big pile of food. The portions are huge; I usually eat half my meal and then have the rest for breakfast the next day. Nothing like leftover Thai in the morning.
Plus, everyone who works there is friendly! -
Review from Adam A.
Woodside, NY
I'm just adding to the chorus, but this place is great. I figured it deserves some more accolades.
I've been going since it opened, and the owner is very friendly and responsive to suggestions.
As a Queens native, I've tried tons of Thai spots, and this place ranks up there with the best. I mean, I may be able to think of places on its level, but none that are actually hands-down superior.
As but one example, the sauteed pumpkin basil is a must-try. And I've never had - or seen - anything like it anywhere.
If you like Thai food, this is your spot. The food is top notch, prices are low, and the workers are both friendly and competent.
The only reason I didn't give it 5-stars is b/c it's pretty much strictly a takeout joint, and I only reserve perfect ratings for places where you can eat-in. -
Review from Morgan S.
Sunnyside, NY
Let's be fair: The Panang Curry is really greasy. I often have to skim off the top layer before I eat it. But it's WORTH it. It's so good. They used to ask me how spicy I wanted it, but I guess they've recently started making one big batch at once rather than individually, so you don't get a choice. I'm okay with that.
The Curry Fried Rices (both red and green) are super tasty and pretty moist (and surprisingly sweet). As the reviewer below said, the Curry Puffs are dope, indeed. The Thai Salad comes with a very generous portion of peanut dressing, which is dangerous but awesome. Beware: The Seafood Soup is SPICY, as is the (appropriately named) Spicy Fried Rice.
The Sauteed Basil Stir-Fry is really good and comes with a good amount of sauce, which I like, because I like to soak my rice in it. One of my favorites here, though, is the Bangkok Deal, which is ground chicken, chilis and basil over rice, topped with a fried egg. It's only $5, and with an appetizer, it's a big meal.
Additionally, the lunch special, if I remember correctly, comes in full-size servings--versus Dee Thai, which I also love. Their lunch special portions are significantly smaller than the dinner size. That's healthier, sure, but if you want more food for your money, I Am Thai is your spot.
The staff is very friendly too. I can't tell you the number of times I've called in the winter with a hoarse voice or a sniffle and had them ask how I was feeling and recommend specific dishes to aid my health. -

Great spot for takeout. It's a small place so I wouldn't really intend on eating there, unless you're trying to just eat something real quick and be on your way. I usually get lunch here cause they have pretty good lunch specials. I'm a big fan of the curry's (green and red), but I've also tried the Pad Thai and spicy noodles. Be wary though. When they say it's spicy, they really make it spicy. A lot of the appetizers look really good. I haven't tried any of them, but from what I've read from other reviews, they are quite delicious.

The interior of I am thai doesn't boast much, however, the food & the service are wonderful!
The owner is often at the shop, they change the menu every couple of months, he said, so that they can accomodate the tastes and preferences of their customers.
I love the Panang Curry, which is at last spicy and delicious. Their Spring Rolls have a hint of sweet cinnamon, and their vegetable dumplings are delicious.
It's a great place to order delivery or takeout from. -

This is the best Thai food we've found in the Sunnyside area. Our favorites are the pad cee yu, the panang curry, and the papaya salad. Be careful if you're sensitive to spice, the hot really packs a punch.
They often forget parts of your order. In the last 3 times I've ordered delivery from there, at least one of the dishes was incorrect or missing. They are generally very good about honoring these mishaps, but I don't always feel like calling back to complain. -

I love I Am Thai for its consistently fresh food, great quality, extensive menu, and quick delivery service! I'm also a big fan of the restaurant's name.
I first tried it over a year ago, at the suggestion of good friends who also live in the neighborhood. Now I eat their food about once a week and haven't been disappointed yet!
If you're a Thai food aficionado, a few items on their menu may be better at your other fave Thai restaurants in Woodside, but this place serves up some tasty deals. I love the variety of foods on their menu, truly something for everyone. My favorites are the singapore noodles (w/ shrimp) and penang curry (w/ tofu). The vegetable ginger soup is also one of my fave cold remedies. Yum. -

They make great Thai soups and salads- I go here when I crave authentic larb salad with some tom yum soup. Mostly though, it's just an excuse for me to order the pumpkin custard. No one makes this like the Thais do and this place makes a great one. I lived in Thailand for a year, and this place brings back vivid food memories.

Sunnyside, NY
I've been going here pretty much since it opened. While I don't go every week, I do go fairly often. I agree with Geoff O, the basil chicken over rice with egg is excellent. For this dish, the medium and hot are pretty hot, so just look out and order MILD. The mild still has some kick, but it's not unbearable. The basil pumpkin over rice is also great as well. The owner (who always welcomes you with a smile) recommended both dishes to me and they were both great .
My friend that lives in the neighborhood also has been going there for a bit. She likes it because they do have some authentic Thai dishes as well as the normal Americanized ones. Her only complaint is that they don't make some dishes spicey enough, but she must have a tongue of steel because the hot dishes are hot for me.
The restaurant looks like a fancy Chinese takeout restaurant, and the cooks wear very clean chef's outfits, which I find charming and relieving (I'm not a germ-phobe, but most takeout restaurants kind appear skeezy). -

I've recently ordered from here a handful of times. I'm a big fan of their Mango Tango dessert, and sticky rice (without mango). The Mango Tango is sticky sweet rice, piled with fresh sliced mango, piled with mango ice cream, topped with whipped cream. Yummy!
We've also had their Tom Yum Chicken, Crispy Chicken with Garlic Sticky Rice (definitely recommend), Ubol with Turmeric Chicken Breast (very good), Sam Yan Noodle, Pad se-ew, and Thai Fried Rice. All consistently very good. Even though we mostly order for delivery, the staff are very friendly when we've eaten here twice. -

This place is such a great addition to the neighborhood! I think this review is basically going to echo Geoff' O.'s, but he's right -- this place is awesome. I like all the usual dishes like red curry etc., but the different noodle dishes are my favorite -- simple, fresh, delicious. The people are very friendly and the place is really clean. I only do takeout since it's not really a sit-down place. I don't really know authentic Thai food, but my buddy who's Laotian just loves this place, so I guess that's a good endorsement. Oh yeah, and the soup that they serve with the noodles is gingery deliciousness.
