"You don't know what you got till it's gone..."
I used to live in Hyde Park since 2003, and moved to the West Bucktown area this past Sept. and I realized that Hyde Park produce is the the best produce market Ive been to in Chicago so far. Yes, there is Stanley's by me, but HP Produce has a better selection of vegetables and organic stuff too. Stanley's doesn't carry KALE and I LOVE KALE and Hyde Park produce carries organic Kale at a cheap price.
All the produce guys are friendly and so are the cashiers except for the crabby, negative, hater caucasian deli woman with the glasses she needs an attitude adjustment!
This place and Bonne Sante are the only things that I miss about the old HP!
Ok, so I've been hating on Hyde Park to anyone who will listen, basically. And now I feel kind of guilty because this place effing ROCKs. Tons of fresh produce at prices that make me question how I've ever spent more than $2 for an avocado ($0.69 each at HP Produce).
They're definitely a produce market that happens to have a deli and some dry foods. Oh, but they do produce so well. An abundance of fantastic fruits and veggies to drool over -- porn for vegans/vegetarians, I imagine. And everything is fresh and appropriately firm/soft/ripening. You won't see bright green bananas 10 days from edible, or chalky rock hard tomatoes, or soggy and wilting greens.
A few highlights:
- asparagus $1.29/lb
- green beans $0.49/lb
- my sister will love this one -- fresh bulk herbs! I bought the 3 sprigs of thyme required by my recipe for $0.13. Make my day, why don't you?
The store is really inviting, food displayed attractively, and prices are extremely reasonable. I left feeling inspired to try new vegetables, beyond my go-to favorites. Loving it!
Weeks, months, even years pass by and I am still in awe of having such a gem in my otherwise bare neighborhood.
Like - I can hardly believe my luck.
The market lover that I am (open-air or covered - they used to be the only places I was going to to buy my produce, meat and fish...sigh....) relentlessly went all over the city to find a good place to at least buy my fruits and veggies. North, West, South, suburbs, big and small, high and low - I searched everywhere.
Nothing beats HPP.
Their products are always super fresh, clean and cheap and I have yet to be disappointed. On top of a great selection of produce (among them - sage, morels, figs, and other hard-to-find treasures) they have a wonderful deli section (cold cuts and cheese of course, but also Italian cookies, desserts and much more) and quite a substantial international and gourmet products aisle.
And you can order online!!!!!!!!!
Who needs Stanley's or Whole Foods when you have HPP?
Take a trip to my yard and discover for yourself.

I really like this place a lot. Since my breakup with Stanley's, I needed to move on. As I said, it was over and I needed to make it stick, no creeping back.
My first visit to HPP, I was ecstatic. Everything was fresh, clean, well organized and well what you would want to buy. Oh happy day, I can buy a few things and they will still be edible in a couple of days. Not expired by the time the 10 p.m. news comes on.
The big test, yes they have equal exchange coffee and plenty of it in clean bins on clean shelves. Is this a mirage?
Not a mirage, I come back several more times, yes just as it was before. Everything fresh, neat, clean and well stocked. This is how fresh fruit and veggies are supposed to look. This place is a thing of beauty, I always buy more than I planned because it all looks so good.
Did I mention the deli, and other specialty items. They have bread, pita, hummus, dairy, a selection of frozen items, canned goods and a small but nice selection of chicken, beef, fish, etc., regular and organic. All the stuff stuffed in here makes me dizzy.
I just have one tiny wish, can you stay open just one hour longer, pretty please?
I love this place, I'm so over you Stanley's.
Hyde Park Produce is all about fresh fruits and vegetables, farmer's market fresh. Rarely if ever had I had problems with their produce being old or moldy. Their selection can be mouth watering. Seeing the Strawberries by the front door gets me in the mood. The Bananas nearby get me thinking do I have the ingredients to make Banana bread. The Green and Red peppers have me mentally slicing them into a salad with cucumbers.
And their produce prices compared to other stores in Hyde park and the city are very good.
They have a nice selection in their deli, which I try to stay away from. Not because of quality, but because I have a thing for prepared foods. They disappear too quickly into my mouth and reappear too quickly at my waist line. But each visit I do have to do a little dance with their Salsa. And on days when they don't have it out for sampling are not happy days. :(
They have a serviceable but limited selection of dry goods, so unfortunately one may have to venture into other stores. Their fish is good, but for seafood selection and prices you really need to go to Issacson's.
Why anyone would go to other places in Hyde Park for produce don't really know. . .

I've been shopping at HPP for years, and I always try and remind myself to post about this gem. Well, today, I finally remembered and I'm posting! I've always been a fan on this place, even when we're were elbow to elbow shopping for peppers at the old location (next to Pepe's). When the larger location, I was like a Green Grocer Christmas descended upon us!
The produce section has, of course, expanded. This makes me very happy because HPP has always done a great job of keeping fresh items in stock. While I love my fruits and veggies, the major wins for HPP are the deli and the expanded collection of groceries such as chips, pasta, seafood, and more!
I have a pure love-love relationship with HPP and am super-stoked that this great store in my backyard!
P.S. Try the salsa and guac from the deli. It will change your life!
I finally found a sweet watermelon on the south side..YAAAAY!
This store had a nice selection of organic apples and other fruits and they also have a nice amount of fresh herbs.I usually have to travel far for my oat and soy flours, ezekiel bread, and Organic ice cream...If I knew about this place a year ago I could have saved myself some gas.I'm just so happy that I don't have to go to the Crazy priced Treasure Island -or drive far for some nice healthy food.
Hands down, my favorite guac of all time. The pico de gallo is solid as well. I think they make the guacamole fresh everyday here, and oooo it is a guilty pleasure! SO GOOD. must try it!
Ah I love the produce prices at HPP! The produce is consistently fresh and CHEAP! Once I spent like 8 dollars and walked away with two FULL bags of produce. Also, often their organic produce is similarly priced to their regular produce!
Alas, the packaged section is NOT cheap and is full of organic/gluten-free/natural expensive things. So I mostly stick to the produce section. The staff is also really friendly and helpful (unlike Village Foods!)
And my favorite part is the french nuns on the weekends! They have a wonderful assortment of madeleines, fruit tarts (my personal fave), large fruit tarts (apricot tart was a hit with my friends), apple bread, etc. But they are only there on the weekends (including Fri). And it's for charity! :)
Excellent. Like people say, may of the options in this hood are dissappointing, but this is one of the diamonds in the rough.
Pretty good place to get your produce, usually can find produce I like and in season
If you want produce that doesn't look dead in Hyde Park, this is where you go. The other groceries in the area always have crappy-looking, overpriced veggies & fruits, while Hyde Park Produce manages to sell everything at a pretty reasonable price, and most often of good quality. Yes, I've found plenty of old lettuce & dying berries, but I'll just say that it's much less likely to happen here than down the street.
Aside from affordable healthy goodies, this is also a great place to get your random international desserts & deli items...I always picked up a pack of Hit cookies...never saw them anywhere else in the area.
Oh how I miss Hyde Park Produce!
The new location is obviously a lot nicer than the old one, but I must say I miss the old storefront. There was something special about shopping in the little shabby place.
Hyde Park Produce makes me grin all the way home. Like, cheesin grin.
The produce is so yummy I actually ate orange bell peppers raw this weekend. Raw! I hate bell peppers. But these were so sweet and delicious I ate half a pepper while chopping them for my ceviche.
Speaking of ceviche - I nabbed two fillets of Lime Cilantro Tilapia and it wasn't much more expensive than it would've been at the big box stores. And then there's the "Wall of Ravioli". I stopped myself after grabbing three different kinds (Goat Cheese, Crab Meat, Pumpkin). One could eat a different ravioli every day for weeks and never repeat a flavor. And they carry Golden Guernsey dairy products! I haven't seen Golden Guernsey since I moved to Chicago. I figured it was just a WI thing.
I can't wait for the summer months to see what goodies are in store. I heart you HPP!
If you live in Hyde Park, then you know this is the place to shop for produce! Village Foods, Treasure Island, and any other locale do not even come close to the quality of the goods for the price you pay. Not only that, but everyone that works there is friendly, attentive, and happy to help with any questions you may have! Of the many things HPP has to offer, for me, their salsa reigns supreme! I don't even bother buying salsa from anyone else, because HPP's is too good to beat!
Now that they're in a bigger location, their inventory has increased, and they offer a wide range of ethnic and other specialty foods. HPP is the closest thing to a Trader Joe's Hyde Park will ever get. There are even some brands that HPP carries (such as Anne's pastas) that are also available at Trader Joes. There are a wide range of vegan, organic, and other environmentally/animal friendly products.
As a Mexican, I am acutely aware that most of the staff at Hyde Park Produce are Hispanic, and to be perfectly honest, I think that's why this place is such a great success. Whether or not this is stereotypical of me against my ethnicity, I think the passion and love for great produce and service, and the welcoming attitude that hits you from the minute you walk into HPP is directly related to the people that work there. Maybe I'm wrong, but either way, there's no where else I'd rather go in Hyde Park (and maybe in the city) for my produce.
You should do just like that Dutch girl who gets drowned in Lethal Weapon 2 and shop here every day. But not because you never know what you'll be hungry for, but because there's always SOMEthing ridiculously cheap. They must have the Glengarry leads on vegetation, because I was able to buy packages of organic raspberries for a dollar in the dead of winter.
This is a great store for people who know how to cook, because they focus on selling actual food -- a huge selection of vegetables (opa? daikon? bulk herbs?), bread, milk, cheese, some meat. You should probably stick with Village Foods if you're more of a Hot Pockets person though.
excellent produce selection, often for reasonable to excellent prices.
I also looove their guacamole, and it's reasonably priced too!
The non-sale prices can get a little bit pricier, but everything I've gotten is quality stuff. Very happy that this is just down the street from where I live - if only there were more sale prices on non-produce stuff, I'd come here all the time instead of mixing it up with here and treasure island. But this is my go-to place for fresh produce!
I'm looking forward to having this place as my new grocery store! We decided to scope out the grocery store situation by our new place this weekend and did some shopping here.
I think they have a really nice variety of produce. The meat and fish looked good and fresh. A little more pricey than Jewel for that stuff but it's better quality, so you get what you pay for. I like that they had a selection of humanely raised beef.
The prices overall were really reasonable. You might pay a little bit more for the non-produce items but they don't gouge you like some other places do.
Great store.
What would I do without them? I have no idea and this question will haunt me when I leave Chicago.
HPP is a fantastic, honest business with great quality and even better prices for produce, organic dairy, the deli counter, fair trade coffee and lots of other stuff too. Really couldn't ask for more.
Great prices for everything in here.. I get my fresh mint for my MOJITOS from here... no fake A$$ mojito mix for me!
I always load up on my fruit from this place .. prices r great & in most cases the fruit & veggies are ripe & not molded unlie the veggies from village food.
(The cool kids call it Yo-Yo's, by the way.)
I'm really happy to live only a couple of blocks from HPP. And, as far as groceries go, I really don't have any complaints. I can generally come here and pick up good produce and maybe a few staples whenever I need them thanks to its convenient location. The non-produce food that they sell is definitely overpriced, but no more so than it would be at Treasure Island almost a mile away, and it's typically good organic/high-quality brands. I am on a first-name basis with a lot of the employees and generally really enjoy coming here. And, of course, the highlight is all of the produce--lots of organic, local, and seasonal options, tons of variety, very fresh, cheap.
I have heard tell the sandwiches at the high-end deli counter are to die for, but I have not tested this myself.
I end up stopping in whenever I have to go the First American ATM next to it. Good variety of fruit and produce. Haven't really explored the rest of the store. Modern checkout system which is nice, since it itemizes your receipt. Prices are OK, but not as good as I originally thought. Definitely cheaper than Peapod obviously...
Over the years I have always been very fond of this store- even going back to the days when they were about 1/2 block east on 53rd from their current location. I can remember going to the old spot with a shopping strategy- get in line upon arrival- since there was only one way to walk through the entire store and that way took you through the entire store- you could get in line immediately and as you made your way slowly through the line, you would still have easy access to everything in the store. It was a tiny space that was always packed with terrific produce and a lot of friendly Hyde Park-ers.
I can remember the excitement when knowing that they were moving into a space that was probably about 10-20x the size of the old place- and better yet, was taking over for the awful Co-Op that once occupied that property.
With the "new" location, they have really done a terrific job at bringing the personable, friendly experience back to grocery/produce shopping and coupled it with some of the best and freshest produce and deli items in all of Chicago. You still have the same staff who are helpful and friendly if you have questions, and this works particularly well if you are female and fairly young. I have seen the guys literally run to the back in order to look for fresh stuff that has come in and hasn't even been unpacked and brought out to the front yet, just at a chance of impressing an ambitious young lady who asks for something they may have......
One key thing to look for in a produce market- the turnover of items. This place does great business and the turnover here is staggering.
Everything from simple produce items like the standard fruits and vegetables, all things seasonal, to not-so-standard items (large assortment of loose fresh herbs, chayote, Japanese eggplant, Indian eggplant, yucca, many different whole nuts, dried chilies, oyster and shitake mushrooms in large batches to be pulled by hand, and a ton of stuff I have never seen or heard of before that makes me want to explore my culinary curiosities).
Their deli counter is equally impressive with Boar's Head being their staple supplier, but also with many in-house made items too (try their guacamole, or one of their many olive mixes, or even their canoles for example). With the larger space came many more items compared to the old days- and so you can practically shop for anything you need here. One hope for the future though- if they could somehow find a way to put in a really great quality butcher stand there instead of selling the prepackaged meat, but then again- this is a produce mart.
Parking can be tough depending on the time of day you come, and has gotten worse simply due to the blockade along 51st, the large gaggle of police and secret service peops only 2 blocks away (someone named Obama lives within walking distance), and the fact that all traffic is directed down Woodlawn and through 53rd.
No matter for me though- I live on 53rd and can walk there- so just another reason to leave my car behind and shop there to ensure fresh product any time I need it! Still, if you are looking for really good quality produce and deli items and want to check out Hyde Park- this is a great place!
A lasting impression I have of this delectable darling is the words on the awning that hangs over the deli counter- and what you notice when you walk into the spacious location- "Welcome to our dream!"
Thank you Hyde Park Produce for fulfilling that dream for all of us to enjoy!
Fresh and cheap fruits and vegetables. Packaged dishes from local restaurants. I like the Luis' Torta from their deli section. The place to go for organic goodies. So many good things about this place =)
I'm a little traumatized.
So after I've gone around this lovely and charming and delightful market which carries an array of fresh and interesting and delectable products, the following happened:
I was in the check out and had leaned over to move the hand basket behind me. A lady was behind me with her cart and too close for me to move the hand basket all the way out of the way.
So as I'm bent over the cashier goes "Excuse me, Sir." and then I stood up and she gasped her face and was like OMG IM SO SORRY. For the record I was wearing a dress over jeans and I'm very womanly.
THEN the the twitch behind me was like 'yeah can you move the hand basket all the way out of the way" so I was like sure and made it a point to bump into her because she was standing RIGHT OVER IT and glaring at me.
Don't give me attitude right after I get called a Sir and then am apologized to 2343 times. Because if you're a twitch you'll get a LOOK from me as I'm leaving.
Great produce! The fresh salsa is an absolute killer. Some of the prices on non-produce items are tantamount to price gouging. We picked up a box of Irish Oatmeal and some overzealous (or greedy) employee had slapped a crazy price tag of $6.78 on it... WTF is that??? Short verdict, get your PRODUCE here and do your other grocery shopping elsewhere.
Not much more to add to the previous reviews here. Especially given the rather dire situation with regards to grocery shopping in the area, this place really is a shining beacon. Their selection is as big as it can be in such a small place, the quality is good and the prices fair. I wouldn't know of a better permanent alternative in the area.
Really nice produce at very reasonable prices. Parking in the lot was pandemonium because we were there at dinner time, but we were able to find a great street spot. This must be a great place to have within walking distance for those living in Hyde Park/Kenwood. I will definitely be going here from now on to be getting my produce until my CSA share picks back up where it left off next summer!
Other items range for reasonable to slightly overpriced, but then again most of the stuff there is specialty/organic/etc., so I guess that's to be expected. I walked out of there with a few good meals worth of produce and staples for about $23, plus a couple luxury snack items, so that's really nothing to complain about!
This place has both good AND cheap produce. A winning combination. Everything is fresh and they have a great selection. Its not one stop grocery shopping, but good to pick up stuff for dinner in a pinch and for the fruits and veggies of course. They also don't have the pretention of the Treasure Island or the former co-op.
Hyde Park produce is a God among grocery stores. And its new location has only made it more wonderful. Here is a list of the awesomeness:
1) DIRT cheap veggies
a) that are fresh
b) that taste wonderful!
c) with a HUGGGGEEEE selection
2) Boar's Head Deli Meats
3) Very cheap organic milk
4) Incredible, fresh, homemade salads at the Deli Counter
5) Great Cheese selection including actually edible Feta!
It is what it is -- a produce store. Don't expect to do your full grocery shop here, but do get all your veggies and organics here because they are fresher and cheaper than anywhere else!
There is no better grocery store in Hyde Park. In fact, this place is really one-of-a-kind. Lots of great deli stuff--pesto, guacamole, fresh mozarella--and lots of produce and food products that'd be difficult to find at a big box grocer My favorites are blood oranges, organic apples, cherries when in season, and mushrooms--all at prices that are way better than typical for Chicago. I usually have to augment my HPP purchases with a run through the local Jewel or Trader Joe's--as HPP's size prevents it from carrying EVERYTHING--but as part of a balanced diet, HPP is so totally awesome that I give it 5 stars.
Honestly, I have to say that this is one of the best grocery stores in Chicago simply because of their unique selection of international produce and other items. They have an amazing amount of organic shenanigans such as organic apples and whatnot. By the way, the organic apples are so good. You have to visit to witness the amazing quality of this grocery store.
As a resident of Hyde Park for 5+ years, I've seen HPP go from it's smaller location (now the Sit Down) to its current instantiation. This place is critical to the operation of Hyde Park. The quality is high, the people friendly, and the location convenient for a large part of the neighborhood. I would say that the consistent quality of their produce has declined since moving to the new location, but the additional groceries seem to make up for the fact. The groceries are also expensive across the board. I expect to pay for quality but when some common items are 20% or more over normal retail that gets a bit annoying. Still, this place a critical to the success of Hyde Park and I will be loyal to HPP for as long as I live in the neighborhood.
Cheap. Good deals. Always Fresh produce.
My favorite place in Hyde Park for produce. I love the pre-made salsa and guacamole. The veggies and fruits are very fresh! the people here are very helpful if you have any questions.
Best value for fresh and/or organic produce you'll find anywhere! They have a great variety of fruits and veggies, meat products, dried goods, yogurt, milk, juice etc. You pretty much can't go wrong.
Avocados are less than $1 right now!! (I don't even know if you can get those prices in California!)
ALL the produce is excellent quality and sold at a great value.
Even when this store was in its former shoe box location, it was fantastic. I was continually amazed at how much they could cram into such a tiny space, and I didn't mind that shopping there was sort of like searching for valuables in your grandmother's attic.
Now Hyde Park Produce has been in its shiny new location in the Kimbark/Woodlawn strip mall, and it's growth has been nothing but positive. What I appreciate the most is that the warmth and community feeling of the store hasn't diminished even though the staff has grown.
The awning above the impressive deli counter reads, "Welcome to our dream!" and what a dream it is. A huge selection of well-priced fruits and vegetables, including fresh fava beans, myriad herbs, lemon grass, and mountains of mushrooms of all kinds. The deli counter not only offers a wide selection of Boar's Head meats and cheeses, but tamales, biscotti, cannolis, and their most excellent guacamole too. Do not pass up the cheesed-stuffed roasted red peppers or the marinated egg plant either. The hot side provides whole rotisserie chickens for $4.99, fried plantains, and spanokipita. The freshly-made deli sandwiches, such as their special torta, the turkey and cranberry harvarti, and the fresh mozzarella and prosciuto are good too.
In addition to produce and deli, a popular feature of HPP is all of the bread offered from local bakeries like Medici's, D'Amato's, La Briola, Cedar's, and North Shore. Come early in the day for the best selection. On the weekends, nuns from a nearby convent sell beautiful and tasty tarts that do have people lining up, snaking around the store.
HPP is also vendor for local/semi-local Trader's Point Creamery yogurt and cheese, Phil's Fresh Eggs, and Organic Valley. Another foodie bonus is all of the tahini, sopresseta, sundried tomatoes, Middle Eastern pickled roasted vegetables, and Ciao Bella Gelato.
And how could I forget the coffee? HPP sells Fair Trade Coffee for $6.99 a pound! Organic Love Buzz for $6.99?!?! Thank you for including me in your dream, HPP!
I just realized that I have yet to review Hyde Park produce, despite the fact that I shop there 2-3 times a week and have been doing so for 5 months since I moved to Hyde Park. Then I realized that nobody has done a review since their new location. SO, time to address something: No longer is Hyde Park produce in the tiny, cramped store where you had to apologize 50 times for bumping into someone's kid/arm/butt/basket/backpack/etc. The new store, which opened yesterday (I believe), is huge and gorgeous and amazing and super busy, but that's to be expected with the grand opening, and the demise of the Co-Op.
The new location, which is just mere yards away from the old one (next to Leona's in Kimbark Plaza), is huge compared to the old joint, and has a much larger selection. And maybe it's the lighting, but the produce looks fresher and brighter, too. The deli counter and bakery selection look great (and I say that as a vegan who doesn't consume meat, cheese or baked goods containing eggs/dairy) and well-stocked, the organic produce section has grown (but it looked to be a bit picked-over), the International Foods aisle was rather impressive, and the addition of frozen things is great. However, the prices leave a little to be desired (i.e. Amy's Frozen meals were about $4-5 a box, and I know that I can get them at Target way cheaper, but I guess I feel better supporting HPP or Bonne Sante, so I'll shut up), and that's my only complaint.
Regardless, I'm giving Hyde Park Produce (old & new location considered), due to the fact that I eat a lot of veggies and very rarely have they let me down. They tend to always be in stock of what I need (though I don't buy anything too extravagant), the prices are pretty reasonable (I was down in Florida last week visiting family and paid $2.99/lb for brussel sprouts at my old local produce joint, and they're $.99/lb at HPP), and the staff is friendly and efficient. The new location just makes everything better, knowing I can get probably 85% of my grocery shopping done here instead of venturing elsewhere.
One negative thing to add: parking may become a real bummer 'round these parts. I always walk, since I live a few blocks away, but I have driven before to do laundry at Kimbark Laundry and parking is always a mess, and I imagine it will only get worse once the buzz is out that the new location is open. So, if you can, walk/bike here and leave the car at home.
This is the only decent decent option to buy produce in Hyde Park. I haven't been to the new Treasure Island but, the Co-op was a bastion of rotten produce. Their meat section leaves much to desire but, the produce section is excellent. The pricing is cheap.
Go for the produce (as the store's name suggests) and buy your meat elsewhere.
I wish we had a similar store in wicker park.
Good service, mouthwatering cannolis, mmm...I want one now...*shakes it off*
Anyway, the new store is a little bigger and provides a better selection. Parking can be hard to find at times since the little shopping center is very busy at times. Nonetheless it's a good location with plenty of things nearby.
I lived next to Hyde Park Produce (in its old location) for a year, buying the night's vegetables there nearly every day, and I still have pangs of longing for it. This is where I learned that I loved red cabbage, beets, and so much more. If I moved back to Chicago, I would think of moving to Hyde Park purely so that I could stop here on my way home from work.
The best, and cheapest, produce you can find in the city. Period. So cheap that the gas you'd burn getting to Hyde Park is still worth it. And they're expanding their store!
My wife and I used to shop there all the time while living in Hyde Park, now she still goes even though we're in the South Loop. Luckily she works at the U of C.
