this is not a place you get healthy food, I find it hilarious that they actually had a healthy selection on their takeout menu then later crossed them out.
But it's cheap, large portion and convenient.
NOTE: It's in the neighborhood that I live so I try to be easy on these folks. I'll go again to make sure that I was not being a bit hard in the review process.
I went here with a friend. We both are gyros fanatics. You can always catch us hitting up a great place in Greektown for a good gyro. However since I don't live near Greektown, its important to INVEST in restuarants in your neighborhood. Also, I didn't feel like driving to the west loop to grab a quick bite to eat either.
So I happened to be driving and landed upon Hyde Park Gyros. I can tell that this place has history. From the old-tattered booth seats to the fact that they don't credit cards, this place will make you think you are getting something good.
Hmm, I had the gyro dinner. My lamb was not fresh. I really look forward to having a heeping portion of lamb that's fresh on my plate. However, this wasn't the case this go around. I think the guy cutting it was rather sleepy and wanted to be home. He wasn't thinking about making a good first impression to a die-hard yelper! LOL!
We get our food and sit down....Drum rolll please! The food is not fresh and my fries are a tadbit more greasy than I like to eat them. Hmmm, my friend stated that her sauce had too much white stuff (aka mayo for those mayo-nuts out there).
I noticed that this place doesnt have too many okay reviews. However, Gabriel in the back possibly gave them a fresh gyro instead of the one that I had.
Still, this is okay joint to check out. The food is relatively cheap and will make you full!
This just might be my favorite greasy spoon ever. Anyone who knows me knows I'm a sucker for good fast food. This place definitely quenches my cravings. From their title staple, the gyros to their burgers to their chili dogs to my personal favorite (and Chicago delicacy) the pizza puff, it's all good, fast and cheap. This place rarely does me wrong (and I've been eating here over ten years now... sheesh, I'm old!) and usually makes me happy with the artery clogging options they provide. To my door, no less! If that's not completely and totally full of win, I don't know what is!
Hate to be a downer here with just 3 stars but my wife forced me not to give it 4. (Psst., it's a 3.9 okay?) :)
To begin with, we walked here from a neighborhood on 55th. (See photo) Nice safe place. And it's amazing to me to see the variance in a very old "safe" neighborhood, and this street. A few street people... Okay, well if the stock market doesn't improve, I might join them, but I think it's worth noting that this is a little "off track". Not sure how to put that more nicely.
Yeah, it's a deli, and while the iced tea was fresh, they needed to clean the nozzle more as it was slightly bitter.
I had a Pastrami which was LOADED with meat. So juicy that it made the white bread soggy (in a good way). I was happy with it In fact we just drove by there again and I exclaimed to my wife "there it is!". (Locals call it the 5500 deli). And she said that was not so special.
I think it was. But I was damn hungry. I didn't care about the folding tables and chairs, I wanted food. As in "Give me sandwich". And I got a great deal for $7.
Have a few coins in your pocket in case the street people give you that 'ol "Say man, can you spare some change?".
So hard to write a fair review on this, as I love the neighborhood on 55th, felt like I was walking into the outskirts of a ghetto when selecting here to eat. I loved it, but my wife says "not so special".
I would say try it and draw your own conclusions. 3.9. :)
I'm kinda stuck between 3 and 4 stars here. They deliver promptly, their menu is huge and cheap, the gyros are pretty solid and so is the tzatziki. It's super easy to get a couple of meals worth of food here for next to nothing (the gyros dinner is so big it's absurd). Having said that, the food's swimming in grease. That's not hyperbole, it's the truth. When you eat one of the delicious salty fries out of their box, some (the bottom ones) are actually wet with grease. Like it drips off of the fries...into a puddle that fills the bottom of the container. It's good food, just definitely not a place for a diet or a weak heart or stomach.
As a struggle to find a decent gyros in the middle of nowhere PA, I remember that it's been almost a year since I've had a gyro here...over two years since I had them once every other week (about as often as my grad school budget would allow). But dreams of a reasonably priced gyro leaking grease into my paper bag on the way to my apartment a few blocks away keep coming back. Are they the best gyros ever? No. Would you ever want to eat in? I can't imagine so - the seats are uncomfortable for even waiting for you food, let alone staying. But the food is good and the people are friendly...and they fit in a grad student budget.
Good food, fast service, good prices. Oh and I agree the furniture's mismatched and the place is falling apart but you don't really go here for the atmosphere. Gyro's weren't the best but burgers are good, the fries are good and the pop is awesome.
I can't explain it, well I probably could, but some places have such good pop. I'm sure it has to do with the amount of syrup or whatever, anyway...
Pretty much your typical gyros joint, good for a quick bite, but probably best to carry it out.
Edit: I had to give this place one more star since trying and re-trying their Gyros dinner, you get so much for such a good price.
Best damn chicken gyros ever!
Skip the fires and ask for extra Tzatziki- they make it themselves- fresh, cool and delicious. Its great on salads too.
The family is absolutely lovely.
Cheap and delicious, though greasy as hell - but what do expect from a gyros joint? Get a combo meal - a sandwich or pita with fries and a drink. They are all usually under 6 bucks. The gyros are good and the meat is plentiful. The burgers and dogs aren't bad either, and they don't skimp on the fixings. Somewhat unfortunately, my favorite meal is the $3.65 Two Hot Dog Special. Two dogs covered in what ever toppings you choose, a bag of delicious fries, and a soda - a BUNCH of food for the meager price.
Hyde Park Gyros has some excellent low-cost high-quality greasy fast food. It may look a little dingy, but the gyros, man, the gyros! I like it, my only intermittently employed older brother liked it when he went, and even my young urban professional north-sider relatives were able to appreciate the wide selection (for a gyros / beef sandwich / hot dog / you-get-the-idea joint) and tasty but unhealthy food.
Really cheap blue collar type gyro place. I'd say it's even one step above the typical gyro place because of the service. This place was a life saver when I wondered hyde park in search of a chilidog. Everything is good on the menu but no healtthy stuff. I suggest eating here sparringly if you care about stuff like that.
