I landed way early and decided to come to the hotel to drop my gear off. Though I couldn't check in at 10 AM, they told me to come back at noon and they'd get me a room in advance of their normal 2 PM check in time. When I asked if there was free wifi in the lounge, they guided me to the business center where I plugged my laptop in and got free internet for a couple hours where I did some work and made some calls.
Good start...
Then when I came back around 1 PM, the room was ready and the bell boy took my three suitcases up for me. The front desk guy, Noah, was really nice too. Arriving at the room, it was an odd configuration. There was a 3/4 wall separating the bedroom and bathroom, which wasn't too big of a deal. But then you saw the bathroom, which was really small. The door swung in just enough to let you enter but you couldn't stand in front of the toilet and close the door - you were in the way. Also the door would catch the bathmat - not good planning.
There was a decent coffee maker in there, but that hardly makes up for the awkward bed layout. Also the TV was an old school CRT. Time to upgrade to plasmas or flat screens, Hyatt. :-P
When I checked it, it was an easy process and the tiny cafe was simple enough (though overpriced like all other hotels). $2.29 for a small coffee...well, I guess it wasn't that bad.
All in all, a good experience. Convenient, and they even provided my wake up call (twice since I slept in...heh). I wouldn't mind coming back here!
Stayed here when went for training in Minneapolis with my old firm. We were used to resorts in Orlando so this was quite the shock. Located in the heart of downtown Minneapolis, which is not saying much, the view hurt the eyes. Bland, old, and a little smelly.
The rooms were post 1970, not in a decor but in a this is really ugly kind of way. The bathroom arrangement is really weird, shower is tiny. Beds were okay, not too comfy. No decor in the room, and it was pricey, corporate rate for almost 400 of us was still $200 a night or so in the middle of the summer.
Only thing that made this place bearable was the gym. The gym was by far the best I have seen in any hotel. A full size gym, with tons of machines, all possible weights and benches, stretching room, boxing equipment, indoor pool, the works. It was $15 a day but it was a firm reimbursable expense, so cost was not really a factor.
Would only stay here again if for some reason had to go to Minneapolis for work again purely because of the gym. As a note, Manny's steakhouse is also in this establishment, see my separate review.
Without the gym, this place deserves only 2 stars at most.
Came here to attend an educational conference, but didn't stay here because of the price.
The conference area was a good venue. It was nice that breakfast and lunch were included in my enrollment fees. Breakfast consisted of eggs, fresh fruit, muffins and assorted breads. It was nice to also have Starbuck's coffee and all the fixings. Saturday's lunch was ok - fresh green salad, London Broil and slices of cheese cake for dessert. YUM! Sunday's lunch, however, was not as appealing. It was their mid-Western version of Chinese food - ugh. The hot and sour soup was neither hot nor sour - and there were slices of fried wonton floating in it. There was some weird cellophane noodle concoction with green beans and carrots. Their shu mai was dry and tasteless. My advice - keep with the American fare.
The employees and staff were nice and accommodating. I've been to other conferences where I would freeze my pattootie off because of the air conditioning. I noticed that any complaints about the environment were promptly attended to. It was also nice to have an ample supply of water and glasses at each classroom site.
Don't know if I would ever stay here, but it's an ok place as a conference site.
I'm a Hyatt loyalist, but I have a love-hate relationship with this particular Hyatt property.
LOVE: The Regency Athletic Club - even though I have to pay $11/day as a hotel guest, I still love it. It's the best hotel gym around, the equipment is all brand spanking new, and I always have a good workout.
HATE: That even though I'm a Hyatt Gold Passport Platinum member, I never, ever get a room with a view of downtown, no matter how far ahead I book.
LOVE: The airport check-in kiosk in the front lobby that is always working.
HATE: The mostly-ambivalent front-desk staff. I almost exclusively use the check-in, check-out kiosks because I've only once truly felt welcomed.
LOVE: Ability to customize room service options.
HATE: Those stupid smoothies they try to push on you when you order breakfast room service.
LOVE: Location on, but away from the noise and bustle of, Nicollet Mall.
I'll be honest, the reason I stay here is the gym. Otherwise, there's nothing else keeping me here.
This is the second time I've stayed here in 12 months and not much has changed. The rooms are comfortable, and the complimentary shampoos, etc are better than most places (as you'd expect) and they even have toothpaste, which I think is a great idea with the TSA making me pack all my gels in plastic baggies.
But I hate it when I am charged for every little thing. Their "complimentary gym" is a couple of old recumbent bikes and an elliptical trainer. That's it. Otherwise, you are encouraged to buy a day pass to the attached fitness center (which is pretty darn good, btw). Want valet? That'll be 25 bucks per day. Internet access? 12 bucks, sir. I bought a piece of (decent) banana bread and water in the cafe and paid almost 7 bucks. And don't forget to tip everyone and everything in your path.
I dunno. I just don't think it's worth staying here unless you don't need a car and all your activities are within a few blocks or a cheap cab ride. Otherwise, it's a Hyatt and it's been fairly recently updated, so it's otherwise comfortable and solid choice if you don't mind being nickeled and dimed to death.
The first thing I did when I found out I was going to Minneapolis for work training was yelp my hotel.
Let me tell you, the average 2.5 star rating for the Hyatt totally scared the shit out of me. Now that I'm here...well...it's not as bad as I thought, but it's still not great.
I must admit, I lucked out. I got a room on the 21st floor, with a beautiful view of downtown Minneapolis, and waking up to that is way nicer than living on the 7th floor facing a parking lot (as my fellow coworker got stuck with). The beds are really comfortable here too, which is a definite must after you've spend 8 hours in training, listening to people talk about audit procedures.
Alas, there are definitely downfalls of this hotel though. First off, the bathroom is ridiculously tiny. Tinier than my dorm room bathroom in college. Not only that, but the layout of the room is really strange - there's a wall separating the beds from the sink (which is not in the same room as the toilet and shower) and when the closet door is open, it completely blocks the walk-area to the bathroom.
Wireless here sucks too. I tried to get it in my room and it's of poor strength. There are no internet plugs in the room itself too (which I'm docking a whole star for - that's why I'm stuck in this stupid conference room downstairs!)
Other than that...I dunno. Whatever else I write is going to be biased - I just want to go back to Los Angeles already...

This Hyatt needs a renovation. The rooms are spacious, service was very good.
Nothing special ...
I was here because of a conference in the same building - and what can I say... Certainly nothing special about the place. The lobby's interior has clearly not be remodeled since the 70s - and the common areas on each floor (elevator lobby and carpet area leading to rooms) look pretty beaten.
The rooms themselves might have had some interior updates - but the layout of the room itself still said "70s" to me.
Pet peeve: No free in-room internet (like they have at Hampton Inns for goodness sake).
Wouldn't stay there again - I'd hit the Hilton or Marriot just up the street.
$100 goes a long way in Minneapolis! A totally fine room and full breakfast for two were mine for a cool $100/night. El-cheapo compared to other cities.
This place is huge and the lobby is full of school orchestra groups and other kids on field-trips, loud and annoying, but fine. The sports bar/restaurant is standard, nothing noteworthy. The free breakfast (buffet or order of your choice from decently sized menu) was good and that side of the lobby is bright and nice.
The hotel is right next to Loring Park, which is a great downtown walking place.. lots of good restaurants, Orchestra Hall, etc nearby. And in the winter, never fear, it's on the skyway system!
Hyatt's are often weird.. they're very modern and plopped down in cities around the world with absolutely no relation to their surroundings. A bit out of place and a bit dated. The girl's got some kick but definitely is showing her age and awkwardness in all aspects. Pricey for what you get...
I really would give 3 1/2 stars. The staff is excellent. Service impeccable...don't miss a beat. The walls are very thin, I could hear the guy next to me talk on his cell phone...I could even hear his cell phone ring. I could hear the muffled voice of the elevator recording everytime the elevator came to my floor.
The beds are VERY comfortable and plush with lots of plump soft pillows. Great views. Easy access to taxis and buses. The complimentary shampoos aren't very good...they should be a better quality.
I've stayed in a lot of hotels and can describe this downtown Hyatt in one word: tired. Here's a hotel in desperate need of a makeover. I'd start with the dark shabby lobby and go from there. The elevators, carpets, rooms - everything needs work. The hotel has a great location - just needs to look 2007; not 1977. For the record, the beds are pretty decent - and the front desk staff helpful.
