5 reviews for Hyatt Place
I love the concept. They took a boutique hotel feel and layered it on a Courtyard Marriott hotel. Here are some highlights:
The lobby is made to feel like a cafe so you can enjoy your breakfast wherever you want. We went both mornings and enjoyed the standard Continental breakfast.
The "Gallery Hosts" were helpful and accommodate our requests (extra crib, toothbrush, extra blankets).
The rooms were awesome. They gave you a tiny closet, but loaded it up with an open feel. It looks like a nice studio apartment versus a hotel room. The TV is awesome and the living room area was huge.
This was my first Hyatt Place experience and it's definitely a step up from a Courtyard type of hotel.
I had booked a room at the last minute (for two nights) after finding out that the downtown Swissotel charges $52/day for (mandatory) valet. At $79/night (with free parking) and since it was so close to a wedding we were attending, Hyatt Place seemed like a perfect solution.
After an eight-hour drive, we were so ready to check in and crash. We walked in (noticing a mildewy smell in the airlock) and were greeted by "self-service check-in" kiosks, with some business-attired choad busying himself behind the check-in desk. I wanted to talk to a human, so we went to him.
We were tired but had a reservation (secured with a credit card), so we thought it would be simple to check in and get to our room. The guy wanted both of our IDs (why?) and a credit card, which was annoying. Then he offered to take us on a tour. No thanks. He asked if I had stayed there before, and I said, "Maybe a long time ago" because I knew I had stayed at a Hyatt in the area a few years before. He responded in a condescending voice, "Uh, yeah. Only if it was in the last couple of months. This is a new hotel. A new concept in hotel." Whatever. I wasn't sure why we had attitude... my guess is that he mistook our road-weariness for trashiness.
A quick look around the lobby revealed IKEA styling (meaning sleek, design-y furnishings slapped on mediocre craftsmanship).
We took the (slow) elevator to our floor, which was pretty basic. The room itself was attractive, with a kitchenette (with fridge and sink, always nice to have on a longer visit somewhere), office area (with a comfy office chair), seating area with huge sectional and modular ottoman, king-sized bed, and bathroom.
I'm not a fan of hotels putting the sink in the bedroom area (because that means water may get on carpet, which is gross) and only the toilet and tub in a tiled room. The bathroom here (toilet and tub room) was very small and cramped... they should've used a narrower door to give the illusion of more space, because opening the door after using the bathroom required stepping beside the toilet (another gross).
We appreciated the swiveling big-screen HD TV and better-than-average selection of cable channels and pay per view. (But paying $14.99 "plus tax!" to watch I Love You Man did make us cry a little.)
Some other nice touches: a throw near the sofa (which we used), well-placed outlets, free wireless internet, and mirrors everywhere.
The main problem of our stay was the loudness of the hotel (or thinness of the walls, rather). Someone was having a party down the hall. Consequently, throughout the night, we heard the same succession of noise: door slam, few minutes of the ice machine, some idiot banging on the party room's door for many seconds, the people across the hall opening their door to look down the hall and heavily sigh and slam their door.
Once you're lying in bed in the dark, no longer susceptible to the fashionable furnishings and finishing touches, simply trying to get a good night's sleep, this hotel is more like a Hampton Inn than a Hyatt. Nothing fancy... adequate if you're tired... basic and reasonable.

We stayed at the Hyatt Hoffman Estates for a wedding. The checkin was a breeze due to automated kiosks, and the staff was always very helpful. The rooms are beautifully designed and very spacious. The manager even discounted the third night that was not in the original room block for us without us asking. They did everything with a smile and went out of their way to help us at every turn. I'd come back here again and again.
Very friendly and helpful staff, simple breakfast, clean and spacious rooms, flat screen television, nice bedding. I would definitely stay here again if I get to this area again.
Arrived on a Thursday at 5 pm. Snow had not been removed yet, even tho it had been 2-3 days earlier. Front entry way was absolutely soaked, slipped and nearly fell right in front of 2 employees who said nothing and didn't do anything. Front desk attendant seemed annoyed he had to check me in. Got up to my room, and it was dirty. Went down to get another and the guy didn't seem to care. Rooms are decent sized. Large stain on couch, curtains broken and when I opened them, there was a bunch of writing all over the window, which I guess was from construction. Showers were low pressure and towels were gritty. Did have nice TV and HD service with it. Fridge was not turned on and thus worthless the first night. The maids were yelling back and forth down the hallways very loudly in the mornings. Maids let the doors slam everytime they enterered/left a room they were cleaning, they would flip over the door lock thingy and let the door shut on it own and it was very loud. Hearing the maids both mornings was very frustraing. We left a "do not disturb" deal on our door when we went out one afternoon for a bit. Came back and room had been cleaned. Was with a wedding "block" but they made no effort to group us together. Nobody near us was in wedding block, we had friends all over the building on every floor. I would give this place 2.5, if I could. As the beds were comfortable and the pillows were as well. This could be much better hotel for guests, they just need to pull their heads out of their asses. Oh, almost forgot, the parking lot was plowed at 3:30 in the morning the first night we were there. Yeah, those trucks are loud as hell and kept me up for 45 minutes. Told the front desk about it the next day and the attendant just said "nobody else has complained". Lame. Oh, yeah, told we were getting a "special" rate for being in a wedding block. Uh yeah, no. First night we saved 3 whole dollars off. The next night? We paid 7 dollars MORE than the standard rate. LAME.
