Feels like I'm back in India!!!
My hubby and I went to India and the Maldives for our honeymoon and this is the real deal Holyfield... no fuss, no muss. I didn't understand why this place gets a bad rap... if you want delicious Indian food, a wide variety of "explosion in your mouth" curries, warm soft garlic naan, a bollywood movie, eat here.
Mouth watering Indian food + Authentic Indian experience - sweating from India humidity = Hurry Curry
Sunday afternoon, beers by the pool, belly rumblin', sick of pizza like you wouldn't believe. Chinese? Eh. Sushi? Had it last night. Oooh - Indian! But I don't wanna go sit in a restaurant - I am just that lazy right now. Delivery, anyone? Ok, called that place and no answer. Where else is local and cheap? Hurry Curry is right by your work? Whatev - sounds perfect for what we want right now. Boy was I right.
You go into this little market-like place and order over the counter. We did the dinner for 2 for $15; you get 4 veggie entrees, 2 meat dishes, naan and more rice than you would ever want. Damn it's a lot of food - it's spilling out of the container!
They have hot trays for you to pick from and it is limited but we had no trouble picking out enough really delicious dishes to fill our quota. We did the lamb curry and chicken saag with peas/potatoes, garbanzo beans, mixed veggies and something egplant. It was all really good. The veggies were a little too creamy for me but the rest was awesome. Damn. I am still amazed how much there was, too. I ate that food for lunches and dinners for 2 days!!!
Great for a quick bite when you want hearty, yummy Indian food. The market has some neat sauces and spices and all kinds of funny british biscuits and stuff, too. I would say I am strictly take-out at this place but I will be back again, for sure.
Like most reviewers, I had the two dinner deal where each person gets 1 meat dish, 2 vegetable dishes, naan, rice, and raita. The portions aren't huge, and I think I paid more for the deal than their $12.99 sign said.
Keep in mind that only certain dishes are eligible for this deal. I wanted the vindaloo chicken, but had to settle for the bombay chicken. Chicken Tikka Masala is also available but I don't remember much more than those two. There's about six to nine vegetable dishes to choose from, and I had the cabbage and the chickpeas. Bf had the lentils and the potatoes and peas.
Most of the Indian restaurants here in Vegas try to class it up so they can charge more. It was nice to find a place that doesn't give a shit about atmosphere and focuses on the food. The food wasn't excellent, but for it being so cheap compared to what's offered here I can't complain.
Cheap as fuck! (and really yummy!)
Solid food, good prices, pretty quick service. The garlic naan is amazing! Tonight we got chicken tikka(really creamy and good), spinach chicken, channa, dal, sag paneer, and potatoes. Everything was really delicious, mostly not too spicy. A dinner for two combo with 2 meats, 4 veggies, rice, garlic naan, and raita was $17 with tax. Good local place for impulsive late-night take-out!
This place has decent food. I do not remember what I ordered.
I do remember the cashier was a plump light-skinned South Asian man with a look of extreme boredom in his eyes and a ponytail.
Serviceable Indian Food prepared quickly and efficiently. Prices are low enough for regular patronage and high enough to make you feel safe ordering it - but between you and me, I recommend sticking to old favorites rather than venturing into unknown territory. I also suggest ordering your food to go, though there is seating available. If you're into watching Indian music videos, by all means take a seat.
Besides the food, the most impressive thing about Hurry Curry is their wide selection of imported foodstuffs, candies, trinkets, and sauces. This is like a mini-ethnic grocery store here! Go for the Chicken Tikka and walk out with a week's supply of British chocolates, ankle bracelets with tiny bells on, bottles of rosewater, and a few boxes of cheap-o Nag Champa products.
the 2 dinner meals for $14.99 is a bargain here. you each get a nan (garlic or plain) which is bigger than your face, a heap of buttered rice, a generous portion of a meat dish (eg masala chicken) and and two more generious portions of vegetable dishes (eg spinach curry/ chick pea curry).
and when i mean generous portions, i mean they are spilling out of the to-go containers & it took me 3days to finish my food.
if you live near by, this is a really great deal.
DO come here if you like cheap Indian fast food that has been sitting in warming trays and you don't care how long it has been there. The naan is pretty good, but seriously, isn't naan almost always good? I've never been to an Indian place and gotten bad naan. The food here is totally like, a solid C+. So get the specials if you want to get filled up with cheap C+ food. It is a lot of food for not a lot of money.
DON'T come here if you have a weak stomach like a 12 year old boarding school student. This food can definitely do a number on your insides if you aren't manly enough in the gut.
Food was . . . in fact who cares . . . there's more story here . . .the cashier didn't really understand his menu. Or what I ordered and was confusing and charged me too much.
He was rude, then when I tried to clear it up and say I was supposed to get Naan with what I read on his menu, then I read it back to him. It was the Channa Masala how hard is that?
Then he tried charging me extra for various things that were said to be included by his menu, maybe he thinks I don't know how to read?
He began speaking in another language to his kitchen guy who laughed and laughed. ALWAYS a great feeling in a restaurant hey? Yeah ummmmmmmmmm no. So I said "Sorry we're on a road trip I've never been here before can you explain how it works to me?"
He explained it by trying to charge me for bread that was supposed to be included, then he brings it out burned.
Would NEVER go to this place again due to the terrible rude service.
Let me just say these guys were just Ruuu! (like Bon Qui Qui would say)
I gave this place 2 stars, count them 2 stars simply because (A) the place was clean and (B) the naan was good. My friend was getting some "ink" done (does that sound cool?) close by so my not so better half and I decided to check this place out. BIG MISTAKE. We would have been better off having a nice romantic dinner for two in a 7-11.
We tried to order from their menu but they wouldn't let us; we could only get pre-made stuff, what is up with that? Why put Vindaloo on your menu if we can't order it? Anyhow...we settle for what's made. The portions were good for the price but who wants a big plate of bland? We asked for some spices to kick up the flava and to our shock, this was an Indian establishment with no F-ing spices. No Spices???? WTF???? I thought we walked into an Indian restaurant. The girl searched around and the best she could produce was some whole thai chilis that we could not cut with our plastic cutlery. No worries though I am a long lost cousin to Wolverine and managed to slice those puppies with my claws. Con: forgetting you cut up thai chilis with your nails and rubbing your eye later that night... I give this place 2 sad puppy faces.
I have had better. Like Samosa House.
But this place does have a lot on the menu and they're open late. The chicken Tikka is incredible. The naan is awesome. Plus I love the Ladu (a beige spherical sweet cake not on the menu but you can see it up by the register). The food is put together fairly quickly and I usually take it to go.
It isn't that sanitary though. The guy who rings me up also puts the food together and handles with his bare hands the sweetcake. All done with bare hands. And they use styrofoam for your food. Eww.
If you like Indian food and you'd rather avoid a burger, this is a place you should know about. Two words: cheap & tasty. The servings will undoubtedly fill you up. A place I enjoy stopping in at.
Quick note, I'm not one to comment on service unless they don't serve me. Just let me eat.
Mmmmm. Moved right down the street from here and never would have given this place a chance were it not for yelp. It is certainly not about the atmosphere, but it is about the food! A good and varied selection of different Indian dishes served up cafeteria style suits my needs. I definitely recommend the garlic naan to soak up all the yummy bits as well. If you like Indian food and you like good value you will like Hurry Curry.
Decent food Good Prices. Definition of fine dining to me.
The food is somewhat bland. You can only eat so much of it. The best thing they have here is the Chicken tikki masala whatever they call it. Not on the lunch menu however.
There is actually a place to sit down here like in a restaurant. However there is no waiter. You get your stuff from the counter and take it to your table.
it was pretty good. i lived and work in the area never knew about the place today. really good stuff.
eggplant was the bomb.
I've been coming to hurry curry since before it became all popular with the trendoids, since before they had the second room, I've been coming here so long I don't remember the first time I came! There might even be a line these days, since it's been "discovered", but there's ample seating.
First, the food has never disappointed me. Sure its sloppy and messy, but it's damn cheap and damn good, and that's damn perfect for someone like me. It's definitely a dive, don't expect to sit down to a meal like other high end Indian places. This place is grimy, greasy, and even dusty. As far as I'm concerned that's pretty authentic, in India most street food has been sitting out for who knows how long.
I find that the older guy who is generally grumpy and has no sense of humor whatsoever dishes out the biggest portions. When he is there, the food tends to taste better too. Maybe I don't get an upset stomach from Hurry Curry because I've grown up with it. But I could see folks who are not used to it getting sick.
I love watching bollywood on the tv, and checking out all the spices they have for sale. They have a selection of British biscuits and sauces. They have Ribena sooooo good. (my parents are British, i grew up with all these silly foods)
So definitely worth the check out, if you're not to "froo froo", but want something tasty!
3 stars for the price and proximity to home.
Like other reviewers have said, it's a local's take-out place. I would not send people here to eat in, or anyone who was looking for a fine dining experience. The taste of the food is okay, nothing to write home about, but the prices are great. The dishes tend to be a bit heavy (typical of northern Indian cuisine) but definately not overspiced.
When I'm too tired to cook after a long day at work, I'll pick up a hot chicken dish with rice, maybe some saag paneer, garlic naan, papadum, and raita (although it's pretty bland and watery). This combination easily feeds two for about $14.
I've eaten here for years, and have never been made sick by the food. Isn't that a rousing recommendation?
Tasty treats from the far east! Ok so it's not the prettiest food in the world, but it is some of the tastiest. Here at Hurry Curry they pride themselves on their selection of lamb, chicken and vegetarian dishes that range from delectable to savory to just plan spicy. I've eaten here enough times you'd figure that I'd remember which ones are hot and which ones are not; I mean I like hot stuff alot. . . . I really do. . . . anyhoo.
HUrry Curry's resembles somewhat of a mini mini mart with a large seating area next door that they let the patrons use to sit, eat, drink, and watch Bollywood music videos. I usually eat her during the day, but the one night I ate there I thought Dev Patel from Slumdog Millionaire was there because they were so packed to order, but after you ordered and got your food, not many people stayed, a lot ordered then took it home to go.
The seating is plentiful with a newly painted dining area, fans and music playing. With an area to use as a party area (its half of the restaurant). There is also a nice patio where you can sit and eat and watch the many patrons of Venice Blvd. who scurry to their homes by the beach.
Things to try, their bread or garlic naan is fantastic for dipping in all of the delicious dishes. They have other flavors of naan too but the garlic I think is the best, plus it's made fresh in a kettle in the kitchen; from dough to your plate hot and fresh in 5 minutes.
There is plenty of parking if you don't mind walking a block or so to get there, and if you want to take home some of the goodness then order some before you walk out.
Service with a smile and wonderful smells to boot.
Enjoy!
You don't go here for the ambiance. As the title suggests, this is a great place to lunch on the run. If you're planning to stick around and dine, be prepared for blasting Bollywood television and no table service.
Which is not to demean the good, cheap food Hurry Curry serves. The vegetarian dishes are average-to-above-average and the meat dishes are just so-so. If you catch their garlic nan straight out of the oven, there's few Indian places in West L.A. that do it better.
The lunch specials are very hard to beat for the price, and the fact that the restaurant also offers a full complement of "British Groceries" also endears the place to me.
Since moving to the neighborhood I've eaten at Hurry Curry three times. Each of those times was terrible, and on the third visit things were downright unsanitary. How they got their "A" rating I'll never know, as the food tends to sit in barely warmed trays under a lamp, and the guy who rings you up coughs all over his hands then plates your order with those very mitts!
Skip this place and go over to Tandoor India on Pico instead.
Never has a restaurant had more do's and don'ts!
Do order their naans, all of them, they truly are fresh and fantastic!
Do order the chicken vindaloo!
Do order anything that is not in the bowls in front of you ..... ie. do not order the stuff that sits there in those steel bowls under the glass ....
Do not eat there! Take away is the only way!
Do buy the cadbury's, mars, heinz, branston pickle and other English products on sale.
I exhort you all to follow the above rules and go here OFTEN!!!
Not to be too crude, but the thing about Hurry Curry is that it hurries into you (if they get your order right, which is rare), and then it hurries RIGHT BACK OUT. Like Josh C. just said (thanks for the inspiration; I'd been meaning to Yelp this place), I have no IDEA who they bribed to get their A from the Health Department. I highly recommend Samosa House, about a mile away, to get a much healthier, much more flavorful, much more sanitary food, and way better service as well.
I used to frequent here a lot when it was cheaper but now I steer clear. The food sits on warming trays all day and is relatively expensive for what you get. I decided to go back after not going for about a year and ordered chick curry to go. For 7 dollars I got a dinky piece of chicken and a small cup of rice. If you want real great Indian food you have come to the wrong place.
A dinkyish hole-in-the-wall place on Venice & Beethoven. I drive by this place on a near-daily basis but never really thought to go inside. The exterior is less than impressive.
It's actually a lot bigger than I thought it would be. The food is served up cafeteria style, and for super cheap. The two-for-one dinner special costs a mere $14, and the portions are pretty generous so you can easily share one meal between two people. The seating area is expansive. The quality of the food isn't the best I've had, like the saag paneer was a bit runny and the yogurt sauce was just aiight. The best part of the meal was definitely the naan though. Served piping hot with a liberal brush of butter, probably one of the best naans I've ever had. Their mint sauce is also excellent.
There's a flat-screen TV mounted on the wall if you're in the mood for some silly/shitty Bollywood video entertainment, and miscellaneous sundries like sauces, snacks and incense, etc for sale if interested.
It's really all about context. Would you expect a Polynesian massage at Denny's? Woud you go to the White House and expect to find an honest human being? Would you fly to Bone, Idaho, for any reason?
Regardless of the relativity of the last paragraph, please try to follow my drift. One does not order a $10 dinner combination and expect a truly fine dining experience; however, one CAN order said $10 dinner combination and be utterly satisfied; and in fact, this what happened to me when I ordered and ate the food from Hurry Curry.
I had my doubts as Hurry Curry was recommended by a person who tends to have different standards than I about food, but it was 8:15pm and I needed some grimace proportions to put down my gullet. I also had my doubts as the place didn't look like it was kept in ideally clean conditions, but I remember giving Radiohead a chance to redeem themselves with their latest album and being somewhat rewarded, so...
I walked up to the to-go area and ordered me a dinner combination including chicken tikka, lamb vindaloo, chicken marsala, and vegetable biryani (along with a sizable chunk of naan). Minutes later I walked out with a large brown paper bag full of said goods. Nobody had tried to murder me, and my socks were still on.
I arrived at my friend's house and didn't hesitate to dive in to the large portion of food. I was met with fresh, pretty far above average Indian food. One can't compare something at this price with more upscale, fantastic eateries like Flavor of India in West L.A., but I simply can't fault it as Hurry Curry filled my need for a cheap and quick Indian food fix; and, in fact, filled that need with aplomb.
Definitely recommended for on-the-go Indian food needs. I spent a few weeks in India and have rarely been able to find food that meets the ambrosial level of the dining there - even the cheap stuff. But Hurry Curry gets high marks from me for what it does.
My boyfriend and I like Hurry Curry a lot. It's cheap, the dishes we always order are tasty and it's about two blocks from where we live.
I always order chicken korma, which isn't on the menu, but they'll make it to order for you. My boyfriend always orders chicken tikka masala and he thinks it's really good. We LOVE the garlic naan and I really like their green mint/citrusy sauce. What's that called? Anyhow, I like to put it on my naan before I load it up with chicken korma deliciousness.
The other dishes we've tried have been hit or miss. Their samosas are pretty unexciting, but the saag paneer was good. I never ever order anything from the ready made dishes in the serving buffet.
We've never gotten sick from eating their food and I've never had anyone be rude to me there. I love the fact they have so many Indian spices and British foodstuffs and are very reasonably priced.
The place is totally a dive and I never feel like eating there, but I think it's in keeping with the neighborhood. It's totally "local" and doesn't have pretensions to be anything else. Personally, I'm happy that their low profile helps keep their prices low and they still have good food. If I want a nicer "atmosphere" and a tablecloth, I'll go to India's Oven in Hollywood or Akbar in MDR.
This place has been open in the same spot for many years for a good reason: the food is inexpensive and decent. Not spectacular kweezeen but solid eats. However, I come more often for the store within the restaurant which, over the past few years, has been gradually expanding. I buy my Nag Champa here (big box with 12 packs for $10, you'll pay $3+ for one packet on Venice Beach and elsewhere) as well as PG Tips, the awesome British tea. Plenty other cool stuff too. Last time I discovered Nag Champa soap made by the same Bangaloreans that make the great incense. Neat.
I was looking for a cheap Indian place to eat at since all the Indian restaurants on the Westside seem to be on the expensive side (for someone on a budget~!). Sure their exterior and interior may need a little work, but the food is cheap and good! My BF and I usually get the dinner for 2 ($15 for 2 meat curries, 4 veggie curries, rice, and naan; though the price may have gone up now). I love the chicken tikka masala and the eggplant with onions and peas (sorry dont know the name of that one). The garlic naan is fresh and tasty too!
Don't go for atmosphere; you're basically sitting on tattered chairs off the sidewalk of a convenience store. But.... 14.99 dinner special for two feeds four girls. G and I couldn't finish our meals. Tasty, tasty, tasty... each dish had a unique flavour. I think I finally found my cheap, good Indian outside of Naan and Curry in SF. Problem: Styrofoam dishes and plastic utensils... But I've learned from a friend to carry my own chopsticks.
Stopped at this place on the way to Venice for dinner, around 7 pm.
The best thing about this place is that they make and bake their own naan bread, which was huge...and delicious.
The worst thing about this place is that they sell jarred coconut mix for curry, but they don't serve anything made with coconut milk or juice (which was what I was looking forward to eating).
The aloo mutter (sp?) was probably my favorite thing next to the naan bread. The chicken entree was not very good because it tasted more like a slow roasted stew meat than if it were freshly prepared.
There is also a yogurt side that is lacking in flavor.
There is a really huge mural of 2 humpback whales across the street, which was really pretty.
The location has outside and inside dining. The bathroom was clean.
There were also products for sale such as incense, spices, soap, tea, etc.
My boyfriend and I ate here several months ago (take out) and while we love exotic cuisine and are willing to try/love anything, this place was seriously awful.
The food was extremely heavy, and extremely over-spiced.
Also my boyfriend got SEVERE food poisioning for 3 days after eating dinner here (thankfully I was ok), but sufice to say we won't be going back.
Too bad because its right in my neighborhood.
it's cheap and yummy, big portions! their naan is gigantic!!

Never judge a restaurant by its exterior is right when considering this place. If it weren't for the 'A' rating I don't think I would have tried this one. Glad I did thought. Delicious garlic nan that is the size of a 14 inch pizza. The chicken masala is delicious as well. Stay away from he mixed veggies. Cheap prices and plenty of seating. They serve you on trays and styrofoam FYI.
Only 3 stars on average?? Really? What standard are you people holding this place to? I used to to live two apartment complexes away and my boyfriend and I used to walk there all the time and get the little buffet for take out. You can get two hefty dinners (we are always too full to finish) for only $12.99, and we have yet to find a chicken tikka masala that we like better. Even in more expensive restaurants. Even in expensive restaurants. The man behind the counter (I assume the owner?) always hooks it up with extra tikka masala sauce (I drench my rice in it) and side dishes, and their naan is huge and fresh and yum. Yeah, this place may not look the nicest, and probably not the healthiest dinner option, but I go for the food. I crave it even though I don't live near there anymore. Based on price and taste, this place gets 5 stars.
Verbal lashings around lunch time were commonplace when I was in grade school. I had a teacher in 3rd or 4th grade whose eyes would lock in on any kid who dare utter that they were "starving". "You live in America; children do NOT starve here!" she'd scowl over an upturned nose. Now, while I've come to understand the gist of what she was saying, there's a reason we occasionally dip into hyperbole and say that we're STARVING-- i.e. suffering severely or dying from hunger-- right?
So suffice to say-- my teacher was pretty much a bitch and the fact of the matter is that sometimes you're just in a state of mind or appetite where you need to shovel food into your mouth.
If you find yourself in such a state, you could certainly do worse than go to Hurry Curry.
For dinner, you get 3 different kinds of curry (two veg. and one meat) slopped in dizzying amounts onto a tray with basamati rice and what looks like half a loaf of naan, all for $12.99...
...for TWO PEOPLE.
That's right, TWO trays just heaping with the stuff, for $12.99. It's cheap cheap cheap and hits the spot, and when compared to other fast food options (mcdonalds? baja fresh?), it's a really nice change of pace.
Yes, if you're looking for fantastic and authentic four star example of Indian Cuisine, Hurry Curry won't measure up. But, I'm pretty sure the owners and good folks there are fine with that...
I mean, after all, I seriously doubt anyone hoping to emulate a rich foreign cuisine on a gourmet level would put "Hurry" in the goddamn name of their restaurant otherwise.
Definitely a place for locals.
The lunch special here is quite impossible to beat. I agree with the previous poster about the dark psychedelic back room... It reminds me when gas was still $2.50 a gallon. yikes.... I remember when gas was still 1.50...
Anyways, the food is good for what you pay for. And it's fast, hence the name.
Till I find a better Indian place for the price, speed, and convenience in the westside, I give it a 4.
I was in the area and asked a guy where to eat. He recommended HC, and being an Indian food lover, I went for it. Its got kind of a funky little store on one side where you order from a window. The store has assorted Indian food products, and claims to have British foods too, although I assure you selection is limited. If you like curry, they have some curry pastes made by Pataks which come in a jar (check the lid for seal) and are awesome for making your own 10 minute curry.
So I ordered the Chicken Vindaloo and a side of Veg Pakoras because I love Vindaloo and its hard to mess up Pakoras. I was expecting the man to scoop some curry from the buffett style warmers, but instead he called the order back to the cook. Apparently the chicken Vindaloo is made to order. I ordered extra spicy, and he told me they would bring it out in a couple of minutes. I wouldn't quite count that as "waiter service," but it was nice.
The Vindaloo came on a styrofoam plate with rice, and the Pakoras came on a separate plate. I guess they don't do dishes at HC. The Vindaloo was piping hot and spicy to match, just the way I like it. It was a little thin on the sauce, and could have been more flavorful, but the spice was right and it hit the spot. The Pakoras were good, not great, with a little too much cumin sprinkled on (I think it was cumin, but I could be wrong). Overall, decent curry, not spectacular. It'll satisfy your curry cravings, but its not designed to blow you away.
Convenient because it's open late when you have a hankering for naan or samosas. The food is satisfying and tasty. We've always done take out and also pick up soap and other sundries from there. The most recent time I was there, I was waiting for a trio to finish up their long winded order, completely oblivious to anyone standing in line behind them, I figured I'd get a snack. When it was finally my turn, I asked for samosas along with my soap purchase. The man handling my transaction reached over with his BARE hands and grabbed two of the samosas and boxed them up with my chutney. There were tongs right with the samosas. Hit with a momentary lapse of politeness, I didn't say, "Uggh, that's gross or ewwhhh or forget the samosas!!" I did turn around and look at the B rating in the window and nod as if to say, 'Ah, that's why they got a B.'
When I got home, I fired up the oven and stuck them in there to make sure they got reheated to the required internal temperature of 165 degrees F. I'm with Renee T., it isn't that sanitary. You don't have to be ServSafe certified to know that it's downright gross to have the person handling cash also handling food. It's even a grosser violation to have him NOT wash his hands and ignore the proper basic food handling guidelines of using gloves when handling food.
Hurry Curry is not the best Indian food in town. However, it IS the best bang for your buck lunch deal for Indian food around. I was a little disappointed they didn't have tikka masala or even just masala for lunch the day I went, but for $3.99-5.99 a combo, depending on whether you're going for a veggie combo, meat and veggie, or all meat curry combo, it's a great deal, and far more food than I could eat in one sitting. Add a piece of naan for $1.
It's good food, for a great price, and definitely a must if you're in the neighborhood.
