Hunter Museum of American Art
4 reviews for Hunter Museum of American Art
Being a local I have a swayed view, but its a great place in the heart of downtown surrounded by tons of places to go. Its a great place to go kill a couple of hours and look at some great art. The front desk people are more then pleasant, and the gift store always has fun little gifts and the people in there are fantastic.
This is a very nice small museum to visit while in Chattanooga. The collections are not vast or tremendously distinguished, but there are some good examples of Hudson River School paintings that are definitely worth the cost of admission, and for a small city Chattanooga has a museum to be proud of in the Hunter. The buildings and location make this one of the marquee pieces of architecture in this very enjoyable town.
The HMOMA is located in the heart of the Art District and is a staple in the area. It overlooks the river and is pretty easy to access. The museum has some interesting exhibits but they rarely change it up so it can get boring quickly. I have been several times and they always seem to lack great exhibits. Its not up to par with some of the other major museums but its ok for the area. The hours are very limited but its rarely crowded. If you have never been, its a fun visit. If you have been...don't waste your time on a second visit.

We had some time after a conference in Chattanooga, so went over to the Hunter. WHAT A DELIGHT! The outdoor sculptures are varied and all interesting. Inside was a surprisingly excellent collection of modern American art, hit all my buttons for favorites, Stella, Rauchenberg,... It's a small musuem, so not so overwhelming as SFMOMA. A definite stop for any fan of modern art. We were delighted in the Object Project, a temporary exhibit of 15 artists tasked to do works incorporating five objects, a bone, a ball of string, a mirror, an egg and a moth. WOW what they came up with! Couple this delightful place to the Walnut St Bridge and the Riverwalk and you have a wonderful surprise!
