The Hungry Traveler has been around for awhile. People from the area absolutely love this place and will go multiple days a week. It isn't the first place that pops into my head when I'm thinking of a dinner out but it does have a decent menu and quality salad bar & soup.

I like this place, found it by accident one day driving around hungry after the beach. I brought my Mom here once when she was visiting and she loves this place as well. I get the stuffed haddock with lobster, which can be bland and have too many breadcrumbs at times or delicious, depending on the day. The fish is always large and fresh though. My mom most recently got the Steak tenderloins and shrimp and loved it. The meat was soft and flavorful and the shrimp great. For $18, that was a great meal. My fiance got fish fry essentiatlly, and while it was okay it was $20, so a bit overpriced. The alcohol selection is great. It's a good place, I will be going back, the service is always great (except for some hostesses), but sometimes you just have to pick the right things on the menu. Overall, a good restaurant.

The Hungry Traveler is like the beauty queen who is getting older but she still retains that air about her. When I was a kid, the Hungry Traveler was a "fancy" restaurant. But when I was a kid, going out to eat was a treat and didn't happen very often.
As an adult, I've been to the Hungry Traveler many times. They've never blown my socks off, but I am never disappointed. In days of yore, the salad bar was stupendous. Nowadays it is serviceable. Many entrees come with a choice of starch, vegetable or unlimited soup/salad bar. I usually go for the salad bar.
They do have lovely rolls. They serve the rolls 2 at a time but are always willing to bring more. With a hard but not crumby crust and a warm chewy interior, these rolls are quite difficult to stop eating (I've warned you people that I'm a breadwhore, yes?)
This trip was my birthday dinner. We had gone to the beach and since I wasn't craving anything specific, I decided we'd just stop here. It was a bit noisy but that is because it was Father's Day and families were out with noisy (sometimes bratty) kiddies in tow. Can't fault the restaurant for the clientele.
I chose the seafood casserole as my entree. It comes with haddock, lobster, shrimp and scallops. You know when you get a casserole dish and it comes and you start poking around?? Sometimes you find that your dish is more breading than substance? Not the case here. It wasn't a humongous casserole dish by any means but it had quite a bit of seafood and not a enormous amount of breadcrumb. Good ratio. Also nice to see that the bottom of the dish wasn't a sea of butter. Drowning the casserole in butter actually detracts from the deliciousness. All the seafood was cooked through but not overcooked. Quite yummy overall.
The BF got the shrimp scampi. There were only 5 shrimp but they were some serious jumbo shrimp. Definitely enough for the meal. The pasta looked slick but wasn't drippy. He thought it needed more "juice" but I tried some and thought it was perfect. Just a touch of parmesan to bring out the flavors. I will say that even as a breadwhore, I was not impressed with the "garlic" bread they served with the scampi. It was just buttered and grilled. No garlic/cheese/spices on the bread. Plus I hate grilled bread. It has that icky aftertaste that just can't be overcome.
Since it was my birthday and they had plain chocolate cake, we decided to get coffee and split the cake. Coffee was OK, but they ran out of Splenda. Pet peeve of mine is a restaurant running out of Splenda. Yes, I know people steal it but really?? Get with the program people! The cake was good, not stale tasting so it probably hadn't been pre-sliced. Yay for good cake!
Overall a good meal. Nothing stupendous, but a good meal at a decent price. -

We checked this place out based on other Yelp recommendations. We normally go to Markey's or Brown's at the beach, but both were so packed, we decided to see what Yelp recommended.
It was okay, really nothing special. The decor was a family-style restaurant, that was outdated inside but comfortable. The parking lot was packed, so we did have high hopes. We had two dry, white-break rolls at the table, but quick service. I had broiled scallops and my husband had the broiled haddock; both were okay, the scallops a bit on the rubbery side, and while they do have a "salad" bar, it was more of a "pasta-salad" bar; light on the veggies.
They had a great wine and beer selection, though, and the staff was friendly. I only gave it two stars because I think that there are lots and lots of better places in the immediate area to spend dinner money. -

The place is a little run down on the inside. Kinda feels like you are in heavens doorstep if you know what I mean.
Their salad/soup bar alone is a good enough reason to patron there. Quality ingredients, fresh produce, homemade dressings and soups.
Appetizers I order are usually their buffalo fingers. Good, nothing great or bad to say about them. Standard buffalo fingers.
Their steaks are always very good. My spouse and mother often accompany myself there and they usually go for the seafood selections. Ive never heard a bad thing about their seafood.
There would be another star added if they would just do something about their decor/ambiance inside. -

You are going to take a look at the outside, see all the cars in the parking lot and make an assumption about the food and clientele. DON'T!
This is my new favorite spot in the area.
The wines were impressive without being expensive. OK, I'll be honest, I love the area but most restaurants in Salisbury/Seabrook don't serve Bogle.
The raw bar was also fresh and reasonably priced.
The salad bar is unlimited. (I'm such a sucker). It has all the basics but since it is build-you-own you can skip the things you always pick out of your starter salad.
We both had prime rib for dinner. Huge size, cooked to order and very tasty.
Dessert? Yeah, they have it, but when didn't have anything remotely close to room left.Listed in: Alphabet Soup, North of the North Shore

My aunt and cousins live in the neighborhood, and took us to their favorite spot for dinner for a family celebration. Being their favorite is quite an honor as there are many restaurants in this vacation town.
They all ordered the prime rib with some sort of seafood addition (shrimp, scallops), and this should have been a hint for me, but they assured me that everything on the menu was wonderful. I ordered the Chicken Parm, which was not terribly good. They used chicken strips (the kind that are supposed to be fried to make them crunchy), and put them in a bowl with spaghetti sauce and chese, and baked it. I wasn't impressed, but everyone who ordered prime rib absolutely raved about how wonderful it was. The salad bar was good, but not imaginitive. The best part of the meal was the bread- which was absolutely delicious!
Next time I'm in the area I will go back, but when I do I will try the prime rib, and leave the Italian food to my favorite restaurants at home!
I would have gone with three stars for my review, but in fairness to the rest of my family who would have given it five, I comprimised and gave four. -

I thought until today that I would be giving this restaurant 5 stars. I've been dining here for years and have always loved it. It started out great. I ordered escargot as an appetizer and as always it was great. Then I went up to the salad bar. Everything was fresh presentable. My friend had the filet mignon and lobster pie. Both were excellent, I know, I stole a few bites. The kids had full racks of ribs (also super yummy). The only thing I didn't like were my fried clams. I was pretty disappointed but I think it was just a fluke. The waitress did offer me a free dessert. I ordered the peanut butter pie. I almost slid out of my seat.
I'll go back. Next time I'll get the Prime Rib or the Lobster Pie.

Went back and they totally made up for my last experience!!!
Again, I got the Escargot for an appetizer(AWESOME) and End Cut Prime Rib and Broiled Scallops for my entree! Everything was cooked to perfection. I know its not easy to get End Cut medium rare but WOW they did great.
Raising them up to 5 stars!!!! -

ugh so we went there last Saturday around 7L30 pm or so and I expected it to be busy and it was. So we asked the hostess about sitting at the bar and she went and looked and said there was one tablein there. So rather than wait 25 minutes we went out back and lucky us we got the table right in front of the rest room and next to the door.
So after about 10 minutes our waitress comes over and gives us menus I dont' see her for about 10 minutes so I go and ask the only other waitress if she can help us and just then our waitress appears and takes our drink orders. She comes back with the drink and no rolls. So she takes our order and we ask for rolls. Ten minutes later she comes back to tell me they are out of filet mignon so i sub the sirloin as the really drunk lady next to us raved to her friends numerous times how great it was. She still has no rolls for us so I ask again and about 5 min later she brings our rolls.
Seeing the older couple near us sitting at their booth holding their check waiting to pay for 20 minutes should have been the sign to go elswehere.
Well our food finally arrives about 25 minutes later and my lobster pie is yummy and my med well sirloin is so red its mooing. So again our waitress is no where to be seen so I flag down the bus girl and ask if she can get it cooked more. So then the waitress comes back and apologies for the bloody steak. She brings it back several minutes later and i was so happy with the lobster pie i didn't notice i didn't get my baked potato! So she apologizes and comes back with one and then I realize my other side never arrived. OMG what a night!
I think that only have two people for that one area is clearly not enough on the weekend. BTW the sirloin was lousy so never take advice from a drunk. My husband got the seafood platter and it was good cept they messed up his side but made it right.
Not a good night for my fav place!! How can you run out of filet mignon and then serve such a crappy sirloin?1 Previous Review: Show all »

I take my 83-yr-old mother here once in a while, because the food is fresh, consistent, reasonably priced and just plain good! It's one restaurant where I can truly say I have never had a bad meal or bad service. I've never really cared for lobster...prefer scallops and clams...but my mother remembered having fried lobster here. (She would never buy it or even let me buy it because of the price...well, anything over 8.00 at lunch). I finally talked her into it by getting it for myself and telling her she couldn't have any of mine! OMG!!!!!!!! I've travelled and eaten in a lot of places in the US...this was truly decadent! It's not on the lunch menu, you have to ask for it. We went for the 5 oz. portion, thinking the 3 oz. portion would not be enough. OMG!!! Huge chunks of lobster in a non-greasy, crispy coating. So rich, neither of us could finish it. Served with a huge baked potato and the soup & salad bar.
Soups are always excellent. Salad bar pretty small and ordinary...but that's good. You don't want to eat too much before the meals are served. We usually get the supremely fresh, fried haddock sandwich with great fries and cole slaw. The staff are wonderful...many of whom have been there a long time.
We avoid it in the summertime, since it's on the road to Salisbury beach. Too much traffic and tourists, and it can take you ages to get through Salisbury Square, if you don't know the back roads.
We're going there again in a few weeks for her birthday. I'm drooling for the lobster already!
