Mom and I had a very late lunch at the Hungry Horse as we had been taking care of some business at the court house across the street and we were starving. I could tell it must be good as there were two customized catering trucks in their parking lot.

This is order at the counter and pick up. We had a spinach salad with sauteed mushrooms and roasted peppers, it was delicious and huge. We had enough leftover from one shared salad to bring home for Dad. We ordered a piece of their apple/cranberry pie to take home for later and our friendly server gave us a piece of blueberry pie as well saying it was her last piece and they would not serve day old pie. That should tell you the freshness of their pies.

I also liked their casserole to go selection as I am trying to find places near my Mom where we can get prepared food for when she is not feeling like cooking. They offer the classics like King Ranch chicken and Shepard's Pie; the smaller casserole serves 4 to 5 and are only $9.95. I think this is a good deal.

Really really good.  I mean really.  Now, take into account that I was STARVING.  We'd been driving around West Texas for two hours on a "scenic drive" looking for BBQ.  You would think every little town in West Texas would have a barbecue joint, but not so.  Finally we gave up and went to the first place with a parking lot full of cars.  That would be the Hungry Horse.

And it was really really good.  I had crab cakes, fried green beans, onion rings; mini me had the meatloaf, pinto beans and fried potatoes.  Instead of a roll they give you a bran muffin which tasted kinda desserty, a plus in my book.  We split some key lime cheesecake for real-dessert.  Everything was really good.

The folks were very pleasant.  This is a sit-down place, but you order like it's fast food and they call out your name.  I'm seeing more and more of this style pop up.  This was one of the better "home-styled cooking" places we hit on vacation...really.

And they gave me directions to the best local BBQ place in town on the way out...too late.  I'm still hungry for the Q.  UYE anyone?
