Review Highlights
Fantastic. Another great find thanks to Yelp.
Listen up Fresno Area, this is great Chinese food. The real deal. I can vouch for every dish we had: Mu Shu Pork, Fish in Spicy Bean Sauce, Green Beans and Special Crispy Chow Mein.
I wish I had a place this good where I live on the Westside of LA.
good stuff. this is what you call real chinese food. went here with a friend and ordered from the "authentic" menu. since we are chinese we did want to order real chinese food, and Hunan did not let us down. As stated, the 2 items we ordered were considered the spiciest on their menu, but it was just right. wish it was spicier, but then again i can eat spicy food.
would love to go here again if i'm in town. definitely real chinese food. absolutely not the best chinese food ever, but for sure very authentic, and good in flavor.
Ate here with my sister in law who is from China and who also happens to be a very discriminating foodie. Not suprisingly, she said that the food here is quite different than what would find in China, BUT:
(1) It comes closest to matching authentic Chinese haute cuisine than any place she's tried in the States thus far
(2) It is her favorite restaurant in Fresno by far.
I have been here several times and just love the atmosphere and the chef's specials. Definitely worth a visit. My favorite Chinese restaurant in town by a long shot.
It's really funny how a place I remember being completely mediocre growing up somehow attracted some famous chef from China to turn a non descript place into a dining destination:

I think this review would have been a lot different if I was by myself or with someone who could handle the Szechuan dishes I truly desired. We had:
-Lamb with green and yellow onions
-Hunan Beef
-Spicy scallops
-Dry fried string beans
now the first and the last were on par with what I believed the meal should be like but the beef and scallops seemed to be average. Don't get me wrong it was decent but definitely not towards the strengths of what the chef could do. Melanie Wong of chowhound wrote up what I should have had
http://chowhound.chow....
and I would have added the House Special Spicy Lamb with Cumin and the Boiled fish filet in spicy oil. This definitely merits a return trip and I wish I was in town long enough to do it. To be continued.....
A HIDDEN GEM IN FRESNO!
Probably the best chinese restaurant in fresno!
it differs from the typical orange chicken and special fried rice restaurant.
Finding this place was like finding a goldmine.
Came here a couple of times and was always impressed, the chef not only cooks delicious food but goes outside and greets you, and talk to you! pretty rare in fresno!
everything on the menu is delicious
the service is awesome
whats not to like??
It's pretty well hidden, and there's not a huge extravagant sign that points out where it is, but if you find it, you will not be disappointed!
try the fried ice cream for dessert!
ITS LITERALLY FRIED ICE CREAM!
Best Chinese in Fresno, hands down! I was a little leery about trying a new place, because I tend to be set in my ways with what I like, but I was pleasantly surprised by this restaurant. My boyfriend and I tried a dinner special where we got about 6 items, and we were blown away by them all.
In my opinion though, make sure you try the butter cream prawns. I'm not even a sea food fan, and I fell in love.
Try this place, you won't be disappointed.
Found this place from an article online a while back. Hearing that the chef was world renowned, I wanted to try it. On our way back from Vegas, I convinced my friends to come here, even if it was slightly out of the way. Am I glad we stopped here, this is by far one of the BEST meals I've ever had in my life. If I was living closer to Fresno, I'd be here and invite all my friends and everybody I know. I wonder why this wonderful chef with world acclaim would just settle for Fresno, not saying Fresno is bad. But there would be SO much more potential if he was in the City or a metropolitan city. Even if he had a small resto, he would be booked all the time. I guarantee it would be. My next trip to LA or Vegas, I will definitely try this place again. I don't remember what I ordered since it was a while ago, but I asked the waiter what he'd recommend. They also have this special once or twice a year feast thing, that is only learned by very few chefs and is the meals they used to serve to royalties. Not sure when those are but would love to try that too. Superb.
Good place...though hard to find. There is very little to tell you where it is. It's in the very back portion of Cedar Tree Village...in a row of empty shops. There really isn't a very prominent sign either. If the person I went with hadn't know it was there, I probably would have missed it.
I will say this...the food lived up to the hype. There are lots of cheap Chinese restaurants with large portions, however, this place qualifies on both...but with the additional proviso, the food is just excellent.
$7.45 gets you a lunch special which includes a small salad (maybe 5-6 bites) with a nice black bean salad dressing. Hot and sour soup. A small egg roll, a fried chicken wing and your entree with your starch of choice (steamed rice, fried rice, vegetable chow mein).
I had the Kung Pao chicken...it was very, very, very flavorful. I would say, probably the best KPC I have ever had. I have never had it with the complexity of flavors, and so many distinct flavors. Usually when I have KPC, it is spicy but all the flavors kind of run together. This was different...I could distinctly tasty ginger, garlic, peanut, bell pepper, onion and chilis. Very well executed.
I am anxious to go back. I am holding back the 5th star because the egg roll and chicken wing were cold. Obviously made ahead of time, which is understandable...but these things were a shade above ice cold. Not good...other than that, everything was superb.
I've gotten food here to-go several times and it's always been excellent. You will do yourself an extreme disservice if you don't order from the Chinese menu or the Chef's specials. The uniqueness and authenticity of those items are what really makes this place stand out from all the other run-of-the-mill Americanized Chinese food joints around. Their sauces are amazing and full of bold, complex flavors. I highly recommend any of the lamb and fish entrees, especially the fish with hot bean sauce. Their fish always tastes fresh, is cooked perfectly, and has a wonderful tender texture.
I considered downgrading them a star because one big problem with getting food to-go here is that they use cheap styrofoam containers that frequently melt because of the super hot sauces. This not only makes a mess, but it also releases toxins into the food and alters its flavor. They will gladly package the food into your own containers, but if you're not coming from home, this is an inconvenience. They need to find some containers that can handle the heat like aluminum or a special plastic.
One word, Phenomenal!
Hunan Restaurant is a one-of-a-kind dining experience when it comes to authentic Chinese, from Szechwan to Mandarin. The fact that they serve tripe and pork intestines is a testament to their devotion to traditional Chinese ingredients. Sizzling hot pots, real fun noodles, and green onion fried bread are just some of the delicacies that you can find here.
***DISCLAIMER***
They have 2 menus. The "I'm white and like Orange and Kung Pao Chicken in a preset/prepriced dinner" and the Chinese menu. Ask for the Chinese menu, and tell them to serve the food as if you were Chinese.
Better yet, ask the server what they would eat, and then order that. I've been there numerous times, and usually just put down the menu and ask the server for suggestions.
Northern Szechwan Style Fish: Amazing! A delicious white fish in a spicy broth full of vegetables and flavor.
Tea-Smoked Duck: Perfectly cooked duck, with a light smoke flavor.
Dumplings in Hot Oil sauce: The best potstickers ever.
Order something crazy, like the cold plate with tripe and beef in a hot oil sauce. It was amazing!
A word to those regarding the supposed odor: It smells like a Chinese Restaurant. Get over it. Talk about authentic...
OK, So a little more now that they had a Frickin' Front Page review!!! You actually have to wait to get a seat now, and they occansionally close the restaurant for big parties... Damn it!
They Dry Cooked Pork Intestines are GREAT!!! Wow! Good, good stuff.
The Green Onion Pancakes are a must have, along with the Sliced Pork in Hot Oil Sauce. I usually get the Cold Noodles with Chicken, and the various soups are fantastic. I actually ordered the Peking Duck a day in advance, and it was Superb!!! I have too many favorites now, and it makes it difficult, cause I always spend way too much. It's like Costco, everything is only $6-$9, so you can run up a $70 lunch really quick...
A word to morons, don't order the White People food. If you want White People food, go to Panda Express and shut up about it. It'll make it easier to get a seat for those of us who like real Chinese food.
Best beef & chicken from a Chinese restaurant I've ever had! Excellent soups too. Portions are plentiful and price is moderate ($26 for Wonton Soup, Sesame Chicken, Beef, Steamed Rice). But I fall under the "I'm white and like Orange and Kung Pao chicken" category as Bill R. put it in the previous review. But I drink bubble tea and go to Dim Sum in L.A. -- does that give me more street cred?
The only thing is -- WOW it's really hard to find. Maybe it's because we were hungry and frustrated, but we definitely circled the block a few times because you cannot see the sign from Cedar.
Awesome is the only word to describe this gem!
I'd heard so much about Hunan that my wife and I wanted to try it. Well, we did and we're not impressed. First the service was slow. the restaurant was cold. Friday evening in early December and it was aboutr 25% full. Maybe it is the economy. The place looks kind of dingy and the seats need to be recovered.
Anyway we ordered and everything, I mean everything, even the potstickers, was way greasy. I thought the little Chinese place in my neighborhood had the market on greasy but this place was the worst.
Noodles were overcooked as well. If the grease was only half as bad I'd say it was passable but I don't think I'm going back.
I almost rated this resaurant 4 stars, but the food was so good, and the price so reasonable, I think it deserves 5. What? Good food? It's true! Good, genuine, Chinese cuisine. Chef Liu is renowned and used to serve many dignitaries and presidents in China at the Grand Hotel Beijing, so the food is great. And, if you visit their website you can print out a 10% off coupon off their already decent price! Nifty!
Service: Good service, at the time no one else was even in the restaurant, so getting assistance was quick and easy. Nothing spectacular like the Elderberry House, but not bad either--I'd say average.
Food: Great! This has got to be one of the best chinese restaurants in town for food. The Chef is very renowned, and it shows! This could easily be a fancy gourmet restaurant because of the food if it were in a fancier building and the waiters wore tuxedos. Chef Liu worked many years at the Grand Hotel Beijing, serving both foreign and local dignitaries, ambassadors, and presidents, including British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. So you know the food is authentic and well prepared. This was the sole reason I decided to try this restaurant instead of another, and it paid off. Check out the website for details of his experience (http://www.thehunanres... in case you didn't see it above). Try the Dim Sum, a light fluffy shopol like roll with meat inside. The fried rice was good too, unlike most Chinese restaurants, where the fried rice is old, dried, and just-edible. Which is why it's a good idea to order steamed rice anywhere else. But hey, the steamed rice was good here too! Also check out the Schezuan chicken, not too hot, but spicy, tasty, and with a light crunch to the outer crust; be sure to order vegetables with it, it comes by itself.
Atmosphere: Very nice, not too formal, the lighting isn't too low, but the restaurant is very nicely decorated, with Chinese vases, paintings, white tablecloths, stylish chairs etc. Unfortunately, it does smell a little odd inside, I'm not sure if it was just the general area since the door was open, but it wasn't too bad. Maybe from some kind of smoking or cigars a while ago? I couldn't tell though, because it didn't really smell like smoke. Regardless, once you start eating you pretty much don't notice it. This is the only reason I almost rated it 4 stars.
Cost: Very good. The cost is better than Shanghai Chinese, and the food is leagues beyond it. I think I paid ~$20 for two very large plates, an appetizer, steamed rice, and drinks for two people.
Complaints: The smell: it's not the overpowering-I-just-lost-my-appetite smell, it's much more subtle, but it's definitely there. I'm not sure if it's from smoke, or frying in oil, or what, but this is the only drawback; I almost rated it 4 stars for this, but the food was so good, I couldn't.
It's also hidden. Well hidden! When you park by it there is a wide enclosed walkway with stores on both sides, and if I remember, the restaurant was on the left at the end in an unlabled door.
Hunan is a hidden treasure. If you think about it, it HAS to be great, because it's so deeply hidden in Ceadar Tree Village that it wouldn't be filled night after night unless it was a treasure worth holding on to. Hunan's head chef is recognized globaly. Not locally, not nationwide... GOLBALLY. He is critically accalimed and so is this restaurant. Does it deliver? ABSOLUTLEY. Start with the unparalled Chicken Salad. Generous portion of white meat chicken (shreaded) with a black bean and penut butter sauce (try it... you won't be able to eat a chicken salad anywhere else again). Kung Pao is fantastic! Chicken or shrimp...either is divine. Mean sizzling rice soup. Ridiculous lunch specials for under $6 (soup, salad, rice, eggroll and entree). Fast service. Enjoy!
Good food. Unpleasant smell in restaurant. Decor looks a little run down. Little slow in service as compared to the amount of people in the restaurant (at dinner time).
dont miss it when you are in Fresno!
it's authentic AUTHENTIC.. i have been eating food in china and hongkong.. and this is one of the best(S). hahaaa.. those pictures of 4-seasons-peas, fried beef with green onion & sliced pork w/ chilli and garlic were uploaded by me. that was the 1st meal there.. YUMMM~
i am so happy when i can enjoy good food! SALUTE to the CHEF LIU!
OMG! After reading the reviews about this place, I was excited to try this restaurant. My husband and I sat down & were presented with menus. I read through the offerings & nothing jumped out at me. Our server was courteous & attentive.
Our meal was lackluster. Although every dish we ordered was supposed to be spicy, all of our dishes were mild and too sweet. I kept wondering what all of the hype was about. We waited patiently to pay our bill at our booth situated next to the kitchen. As we waited, we began to notice interesting plates and bowls leaving the kitchen headed for other diners. The aroma of peppers and spices prompted us to ask the server about the dishes. He explained that the dishes were spicy. He was surprised to hear that we like spicy food. It was the very reason that we wanted to try Hunan. The server said that we should have ordered from the, "Chinese," menu. Chinese menu!!! We were not even offered the, "Chinese," menu. After a quick review of the new menu revealed all of the dishes we had been looking for. Being of Asian descent, I took particular offense at not being offered the, "Chinese," menu.
I find myself in Fresno once a year & will probably be back next year to order off the CHINESE menu. I should be over my frustration & disappointment by then.
