One of the worst humane societies in the area from the top down. Requires applications that take a long time to process, and often when they do the animal you liked it gone.
Their hours are atrocious and do not sync up with the ones google provides.
If you're looking for a new pet and want to walk in, I would call first to make sure they are open.
Staff also extremely rude, quick to hang up as well.
There are a LOT of good shelters, and rescues out there. Unfortunately this place is not anymore. So many bad experiences.Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Elysa S.Hummelstown, PA07May 27, 2023Updated review
Grateful to HSHA for all my furry family members! I'm also a proud volunteer of many years.

The safe haven program doesn't get anywhere near the amount of credit it deserves. I am proud to say I have volunteered with and been a foster parent for HSHA for many years. I have them to thank for almost all my furry family members, both the ones still here and the ones sadly missed. Adoption fees are more than reasonable. A great place to meet your future family members!!!

This a great place to find your next furry family member. The staff and volunteers care for and about the animals and want the best for both animals and adopters. Adopt, don't shop!

The staff is great and dedicated to the mission of the shelter. The facility is modern and clean, and the dogs have indoor and outdoor access unlike a lot of local shelters in the area. They have a strong and dedicated volunteer program, and staff and volunteers alike greet you and make you feel comfortable walking through the shelter. The animal residents are well cared for, and adoption is a straight-forward and easy process. Be weary of the one-star reviews, they appear to have a political agenda and are against the mission of the shelter.

My family is dealing with an outside semi feral cat; not an indoor regular pet.
We're trying to care for her basic wellbeing.
With difficulty we were able to get her there for initial appointment.
Vaccinations were given and a diagnosis of ringworm with medication.
However no additional support unless we asked or pushed for it.
We were also expected to scruff the cat, in order to administer the med; which turned out to be unrealistic and perhaps not even optimal.
Nothing was ever mentioned about tick or flea care.
All this for around a hundred bucks in estimate.
For second, follow up appointment, I was alone in trying to get the cat into the carrier (have personal medical issues affecting reflexes). I struggled for a half an hour, including enticing her with her favourite treats. To no avail.
I then, still out next to the car, contacted Becky Morgan; quickly emailing her about my struggles.
Only to receive an email from another staff, that inorder to make another appointment, I need to pay upfront first, for missing the appointment.
I don't consider this approach humane at all.Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jennifer B.Annville, PA03Aug 1, 2022Updated review
I filled out application for adoption and it was approved.I met the dog and the next step was a meet and greet with my current dog. I was told the team would reach out when they had an apt for the meet and greet. Days went by and i called and emailed daily for this to take place. I then get a call from the shelter that they informed me that they would not allow me to adopt this dog due to there veterinary rescource center throwing shade on me due to poor care I called them out on and left reviews to warn others of my horrible experience. This shelter is beyond poor in many levels. I have high standards for veterinary care for my animals and the hbg humane society did not provide quality care and this is just an extension of the way they treat people and there pets like 'garbage'.They denied a dog from getting a great home and life because I no longer go there for care for my animals. This is to inform the public of there way of treating the public and there pets.

I took my very ill dog there to be seen by Dr. weeks in August 2021 and I regret having EVER taken my poor sick dog there. Let me explain..... Dr. weeks gave us 10 minutes barely of her time and ran the tests and did xray's. she had no answers but probably not's when asked could my sick dog be saved and my dog walked in there to barely be able to walk out after while in Dr. weeks' care. she did not see that my dog was even on his feet before dashing out of the room never to return. After a brief summary of her inability to know why my dog had fallen so ill. Dr. week's did not even give me five minutes of her time to explain the medication she was prescribing for my dog and how it would affect him (wich turned out to be problematic in a few ways) a worker handed me a bag of medication for my dog on the way out the door. I barely got my dog up off the floor as a worker and myself used a sling to get him up and then the worker did not even walk us out to the car where I struggled to get my gravely ill dog in the car. My dog laid for two days with no improvement and on the third day I called dr. weeks to try and find out more from her but still her response was probably not's and told me on the call days after he was there for care that he had liver disease This went from bad to even worse when my dog was brought in to there end of life services where a worker walks in while i'm spending the very las precious moments with my dog and does not knock just swings the door open and asks me to pay .I told her my husband was right outside the door if they want to collect the money and she left the room. No compassion and even after I shared my experience with the director via e-mail I was never contacted. I wanted my experience known so that the Hbg Humane society could address this and be able to offer the public compassion as they help there beloved animals find rest .In conclusion I found out what my dog 's diagnosis was after I had a private practice veterinarian look over my dog's records that I had sent to from dr. weeks and found that my dog had hemangiosarcoma. This is a grave diagnosis and to spare the dog of the possibility of dying a horrific end to there life by bleeding out internally and gasping to there death they educate the owner on the spot of the immediate need to euthanize . Dr. weeks recommended three more days wich he would have suffered if i would have took her advice. the private practice veterinarian that went over the records of my dog that was now deceased said to me 'Thank you for not waiting the three more days". Please know I understand that misdiagnosis of an animal can happen and mistakes made and they were with Dr. weeks but the fact that she did not care for us in our time of my dog being so gravely ill and walking out the door on us to send him home to die maybe or maybe not and she did not provide care for how or when he did it. This was a 'nightmare' situation the day I brought my dog into this place for care, and the trauma surrounding it has been with me ever since. I believe in the work that the shelter does, and have adopted two dogs from this shelter but having experienced this part of the shelter services was something I had to share to warn others so they that go after my Moonie and me can know to make the decision's that will best benefit the animals they are seeking the best possible care for. Please know if you take your animal here for care, this could be your horrific experience and so i am just advocating for owners and there precious animals who love them and want the very best care for them. This was " our "experience here at the veterinary resource center of Hbg and my dog's life 'mattered' and so does each and every one of your's.

Would not hold a cat for me for a few days while I worked on getting shot records for proof my others cats were vaccinated. I even offered to pay 3 times the cost of normal adoption fee. This was a few years ago but never went there again. Plenty of other shelters. Place was ran by a Gestapo forget her name. They could care less about placing animals and only hung up on their silly policies. They had nothing to lose.

You can adopt a dog, cat, rabbit, guinea pig, bird, whatever else they currently have available. They have animals of all ages, sizes and types, who would love to have a home. Many are just unable to be cared for by their current owners. There is usually an application and a fee for adopting an animal. Animals from juvenile to mature. They also have a foster-home system where you can basically rent an animal and give it shelter when the Humane Society is overcrowded.
They are always in need of dry dog and cat food, donations and volunteers to help out at any time. We have dropped newspapers off there as well. I always enjoyed going there and volunteering to walk some of the dogs around the building, that was so fun.Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Marie P.York, PA5916Sep 29, 2016
