What would possess me (or anyone?) to give a dentist a 5-star review? After all, going to the dentist (normally) really, really sucks. Well, if you go to Dr. Hsu, it's the most pleasant experience you could hope for from a dentist appointment.
My background: Inherited bad teeth and receding gums (thanks, parents). Routine dentist appointments (cleanings, check-ups) are hell. I have to be numbed (novocaine, not just topical) but, lucky me, I am practically immune to novocaine!
Dr. Hsu, however, is a genius who somehow manages to numb my mouth and get the cleaning done. I love him!
Dr. Hsu rocks! Almost makes me look forward to the dentist (well, OK, maybe not, but I don't have a panic attack when I contemplate my next appointment). -

first of all, lemme just say that i am really afraid of going to the dentist. so afraid i would procrastinate for years before getting in that chair. until i had such bad cavities that root canals were needed *sigh*
after hitting my 30s and realizing that teeth needed to be taken seriously (i.e. no dentures in my 40s please) i finally got up the nerve to visit Hui Dental. and what a good decision that was!
Dr. Hsu is sooooo wonderful. so patient and gentle, and always asking if i'm doing ok along the way. even though i'm still nervous, i totally trust that they're taking good care of me. and every procedure i've gotten done has been painless and hassle-free after the fact.
the hygienists are also very nice and competent. cleanings are quick and easy. goodie bags have the kind of floss i like :)
i can't help but rave about Hui Dental and Dr. Hsu! -

First Yelp review from a long time member. I had to do it because I had such a great experience at Hui dental last week. The appointment process was quick and painless. Once I was at the office, the wait time was minimal and was seen by the dentist's assistant. Sorry, I don't remember he name but she was the assistant to my dentist, Dr. Kwan. She was, in one word, AWESOME! Explained to me in detail about everything she was about to do and made the process painless (literally).
Then Dr. Kwan came in and did a complete (and very thorough) exam of all my teeth and pointed to me exactly where there were tiny cavities forming and scheduled me for follow-up appointments. easily the best dentist I've had and the cleanest, most welcoming (as much as a dentist's office can me) dental office I've ever been to.
Highly recommend for convenience, ease of use and most important, highly competent and friendly staff. -

I had a cleaning and several cavities filled by Dr. Choi.
Since I was a first time patient, he cleaned my teeth himself and took the time to get to know me. Pretty nice touch, especially for what is clearly a busy dental practice.
When it came to the fillings, he was totally awesome throughout the entire experience. He explained clearly what was wrong, where the cavities were, what kind of filling he would use and why, etc. During the procedure he somehow managed to make it almost completely pain free. The worst part of the experience was the novocaine shot. I definitely got the sense that I was in skilled hands. He followed up that night to make sure nothing was wrong.
I cannot recommend this practice enough. You won't be disappointed. -

I've been coming to this dental group for the past couple years, due to its convenient location and great reviews. I really wanted to like my new dentist office, but the first few appointments were just kinda eh. My initial dentist, Dr. Stuan, was fine. Very talkative, but informative too, which is cool. The hygienists however, nice as they were, never even introduced themselves and forgot to give me my free bag of goodies once. Nothing to change offices over, but still.
Then, prior to my annual check up, I was informed that Dr. Stuan had left and I'd be Dr. Hsu's patient instead. Didn't have much of a preference anyway, but let me tell you, I now love my new dentist. Dr. Hsu is not as talkative as Dr. Stuan (a plus in my book), but just as educational. He performed a thyroid test on me as part of my screening, all the while explaining what he was looking for. I've never had this done by any dentist and as I told him so, he seemed surprised and mentioned that he found early stage thyroid cancer in a relative before through such an exam.
The hygienist on this day was on point too. She actually introduced herself and was a wealth of information as well. I don't recall ever encountering a more knowledgeable hygienist. Unfortunately I've now forgotten her name (Susan maybe?), but hope to get her again in another 6 months. Seems unlikely, since I've previously had all different hygienists, but still. =) -

The receptionist is very nice. So are the dentists. I can't imagine why anyone would have a problem unless they are some of those impatient people. This is a great place and you should check it out if you need a dentist.
If you have an issue with your insurance it is YOUR responsibility to check if they are in your group or not. So I laugh at some of the bad reviews on here for blaming Hui for their own mistake.
I would highly recommend this place to everyone: the receptionist and the dentist were very upfront and informative about everything I would need to know. I knew how much to expect to pay, how to pay, etc... I also felt at ease about the decision making process about what procedure the dentist would use.
I had a chipped tooth and had to get it filled. The injection was the most pain free I've ever experienced. Besides a little jaw ache, but nothing sharp.
The dentist, assistants, and receptionists were all very nice, and I plan to go back again for future cleanings, etc...
Overall one of the best dental experiences I have had. Hui is a great model for other dental groups to follow. -

This is a great dental office. I see the same dentist every time, he is my periodontist. I have had several difficult procedures, including extractions and periodontal surgery. Dr. Fuller is so skilled and compassionate. The office runs like clockwork, it's filled with beautiful orchids and has the most up to date decor. They offer long hours so you can complete your dental check ups after work. They are efficient on the biling and scheduling. These dentists are consistent professionals, as are the support staff. Outstanding, thanks for an A++ dental practice.

a definite 5_star or more for Dr. Hsu of the Hui Dental Group ...
Dr. Hsu has been my family dentist forever ... i was introduced to his practise when working at San Mateo for Franklin Resources (a small company then in the early 90s, now called Franklin Templeton) .... he was known to be the "painless" dentist ... really cared when he cleaned your teeth, ensure not to hurt you ... thereafter, as his practise grew, he carefully selected hygenists who had a gentle touch ...
He definitely is sincere and will not try to sell you services you do not need; not at all ... he is one of the rare good-old-fashioned soldier of the medical profession ...
His accounting staff during turnovers, can be a pain, at times, though it is just one of those normal things in everday existence...
Sometime in the late90s during my jobhopping from one startup to another, while changing insurance carriers, I was forced to change dentist and tried various generic dentists in the city ...
After horrible dentist experiences, I returned to Dr. Hsu. He is open 7 days a week ..., and is conveniently located near Santa Ramen, the famous San Mateo noodle place .... after a cleaning, you can stop by for a nice, warm bowl of soup !Listed in: customer service please?

Great local San Mateo dentist that is honest and open convenient hours.
I've got a gnarly molar in the back which is chipped slightly but has no other problems. I can usually tell a bad dentist by the dollar signs that light up when they probe the chip, and then proceed to tell me that my lower jaw will rot off in six months if this is left untreated. Unlike car salesman dentists, Dr. Kwan has always reviewed my options along with a cost/benefit analysis, and his opinion of whether you actually need the work done.
I first came here because Hui Dental is open late and on weekends, but have stayed with them due to good service and honesty. -

I called for a kind of emergency appointment yesterday and was in the office half an hour later (as a new patient). Dr. Kwan was great. I'll definitely go back.
Interesting side note: I had a cavity filled 15 years ago by a dentist that was a family friend. I've gone to several dentists since then, having moved around a lot, and *not one* other dentist has noticed the filling - they've always said I've never had a cavity. I was kind of mad at the old dentist (what WAS he doing with the drill and novacaine that day?) but then Dr. Kwan mentioned the filling yesterday. He seems to be thorough, genuinely nice, and honest. -

I've had lots of dentists. Ok ones, bad ones, truly terrifying ones (see: polish woman who punched me in the shoulder for being a smoker each time I visited.)
Hui dental is such a welcome relief. The service there is as nice and friendly as the blue cloud painted sky on the ceiling. And these guys are great doctors! I've had dr. Hsu as my dentist for a number of years now, before recently switching to Dr. Jason Stuan. They're both very caring, thorough, and professional; my teeth are looking and feeling great. These guys even took my wisdom teeth out (the name of their surgeon slips my mind at the moment) and were really understanding of my nitrous - fueled nonsense.
One thing to make sure of is that they bill your insurance correctly and to the full amount possible. While they are helpful, they are not as aggressive in making sure you get your money's worth as some of my previous dentists. -

Dr. Hsu is awesome!!! No one really likes going to the dentist, but I really like Dr. Hsu. I have been going to him for over 15 years, way back when Hui Dental was at the old Fashion Island mall! He is always in a good mood and is very gentle. He is ultra cautious of not hurting you and reads your facial expressions as a gauge. I like how he describes what he is doing before he does it, throughout the process, rather than just charging in and getting it done. Dr. Hsu must really love his job, as he works late often and on the weekends. Because he is so great, I have referred several of my friends and co-workers there, not only because of the convenience but because Dr. Hsu is great!
I am embarrassed that I didn't write this review ages ago. -

I suppose I've been fortunate, but I've had several good dentists in my life. I had an incredible dentist in the midwest and was sad to leave them when I moved to California, so much so that the first few checkups I scheduled on visits home so I could keep seeing that dentist.
When I finally decided I should have a dentist that lived in the same state I did, I asked a couple friends at work for their recommendations. Oddly, all of them gave me the same recommendation. I figured that had to be a good sign.
From my very first visit with Dr. Hsu, I knew I was going to like this dentist as well. He's very thorough, and explains what he's doing as he goes. He even has a way to make a shot of novocaine not hurt--to me, that's worth the price of admission right there. As you can tell, I had a good first experience and have been going to Hui Dental Group for about ten years now. There was even a time when I had to have a root canal done and Dr. Hsu gave me his personal mobile number so I could call him if I had any issues as it healed. Now that's some service!
The rest of the staff has always been very helpful and friendly as well. The hygienists have typically been very good, and many of them are a DDS themselves. This does seem to lead to reasonably frequent turn over in the hygienists, but they provide excellent service this way.
Lastly, the office itself is great. The ceiling is painted like the sky, there's a TV and DVD player at each chair if you choose to use it or are in for a long procedure, and they are open 7 days a week! -

I had a very positive experience, particularly with Dr. Hsu. I had a biking accident where I broke three front teeth. My old dentist had just sold his practice to some new people. They couldn't see me right away, but Dr. Hsu could. He did two root canals, two crowns and filled the third tooth. He was very gentle- even his shots didn't hurt! He was always very informative, extremely nice and has a good sense of humor. Mable at the front desk is very good handling insurance and making appointments. She almost always got me in days in advance for my appt, if the opportunity arose, something I greatly appreciated. I am very pleased with Hui Dental!

I love Dr. Stuan!!! I really had a lot of anxiety about going to the dentist since I have TMJ and knew I would need a filling. Right away Dr Stuan put me at ease.
He was reassuring, calm, and really took his time to explain what he was going to do.
The most dreaded part of the visit was actually the best part!!! Dr. Stuan never uses that huge needle that is often used for novocaine. He perfected a technique that uses a very small needle instead and I barley felt it! I was shocked. The filling took less than an hour and he did a great job. The hygienists are all very thorough and friendly. Everyone at Hui Dental is extremely professional and courteous and the hours make it really convenient.
If you are dental phobic like me, Dr. Stuan will convert you. He did such a great job, my husband made an appointment for next week. Thanks so much Dr. Jason!! I'll definitely be back. -

The BEST dental office, dentists, assistants and receptionists I have ever known. My family and I have been going to HUI DENTAL for 15+ years and ALWAYS great experiences; from cleaning to xrays, to fillings and even crowns. We enjoy that they take a conservative approach and never suggest things that are unnecessary. You can TRUST that they are there to do the right things at the right time. They also stress preventative care and have taught us how to really floss and brush well.
Happy we have HUI in our community -- a real asset! Thank you. -

Best dental experience ever! For two reasons:
(1) No pain what so ever! I was fretting about my appointment b/c I needed two fillings and three shots. I've had some uncomfortable shots with other dentists, and was dreading the appointment. But I was astonished when I felt close to nothing, a barely perceptible poke. They were so nice and great with communicating what was happening that I didn't feel a thing.
(2) Initial assessment required an out of pocket expense of close to $300. WIith my flex dollars done for the year, I asked Dr. Choi what my options were, including postponing treatment. He answered all my questions honestly, with no pressure, and laid out all my options. In the end, I was able to save a lot of money by using silver fillings.
I look forward to my next appointment with them knowing that I will be taken care of. -

I am new to the Peninsula and needed a dentist so I figured I would go here since the Yelp reviews were so amazing. But did not have a great experience. i am giving a 2nd star only because the office is very clean and comfortable - everything else about my visit was not so nice.
1st, when i came in and the girl seated me (before anyone had even seen the inside of my mouth), she told me, "don't forget to stop by the front desk to schedule all of your follow up appointments." i said, "what do you mean, follow up appointments?? the doctor hasn't even looked at me yet!!" "Uh...yea you are right...uh". Felt like they automatically find some reason for you to come back, and sure enough, i needed 3 follow ups!! maybe my teeth (which have never needed this much work before) were in bad shape, but i don't' think so.
against my better judgment and sinking gut feeling, i came back for 2 of the 3 visits. the first visit and filling went fine but the 2nd visit, Dr. Choi filled two back lower molars. he used some kind of stronger drill that didn't' have that high pitch drill sound, but sounded more like a low sounding but stronger jackhammer (have never had a drill sound like that before). as soon as the Novocaine wore off, i knew something was wrong - so much pain!! i lived with it for about a week and then i called to come in and have him take a look. Dr. Choi was SO condescending, talked to me like I was 5 years old. I felt like a a complete ass for coming in and felt like he thought i was somehow making it up. ITS BEEN ALMOST 6 MONTHS SINCE THE WORK WAS DONE AND I STILL CANNOT EAT ON THAT SIDE OF MY MOUTH!!!! In the last couple of months, i have slowly been able to eat soft bread, but if i happen to get something harder on that side - ZING! PAIN!!!
i was supposed to come in to finish the treatment plan, but NO WAY. i am totally traumatized. i am now going to a new dentist who thinks there might be some small fractures in those 2 teeth. She said that she could drill out the fillings and redo them if the pain doesn't improve. Thank God, its slowly (VERY slowly) getting better, I don't think i could survive having that work redone. this has been a nightmare.Comment from Paul H. of Hui Dental Group 6/22/2011

Will never use these jokers again!
When I made my appointment, they confirmed they were a member of my insurance program. After my appointment, they billed me for the the difference between what they had contracted with my PPO, and what they wanted to charge - a clear violation of how a PPO works. When I called them on it, they gave me the runaround until I threatened to report them to the BBB and my insurance group. Once I did, the charges were removed - big time jokers.
Too bad since I thought I had found my drs...
-------------------------------------------------- ----------------------
Update on this review
Since posting of this review, Hui Dental has sent me a long personal letter requesting that I remove this post. I will not remove this post and here is why:
First of all, the dental service itself was excellent but like most business institutions, it is the whole customer experience that counts.
1) Just Passing on Charges - I was billed for the difference between what my insurance paid vs what they charged. Hui Dental should have looked into it since there was an issue with the doctor being from a separate office prior to joining. They simply passed on the charges.
2) Poor Customer Service - I always call ahead to check whether my insurance is accepted before making an appointment. When I called, they denied ever telling me they accepted my plan AND said they do not participate in ANY plans. In the letter they sent me, they said they accept Delta Dental. The tone of both the person I spoke with the letter was rather condescending. There is no acknowledgment that perhaps they could have done something wrong. There was no apology that I had to make the extra effort to call my insurance company and them.
3) Asking for removal of my Yelp Review - The reason for Yelp's success is because it provides an unbiased review of businesses. It is not up to the business to determine what reviews get removed. Ironically, I found this business through Yelp and was wondering why they only had very positive reviews.Comment from Paul H. of Hui Dental Group 2/1/2011

Great, great office. Now I'm not a fan of the dentist and hadn't gone in 5 years. Pain in my teeth though convinced to go in and find out how bad things were. I was nervous about the whole experience but I was put at ease. No judgement over not going, no stress, just professionalism in a clean and attractive office. I saw Dr. Chen and she was fantastic and very thorough. The best of it was no cavities, just a cleaning! I will be much better at going to the dentist regularly from now on and this is due in no small part to the care and compassion of the dentists' here.

I went here only once and wouldn't go back. The dentist was fine, but the setup really sucked. I kept getting reminder phone calls, and finally got a "we're going to cancel your appt. if you don't call and confirm". Honestly! I was planning on coming, I had given them my insurance info, but harassing me to confirm after I had talked to them a week before and had only made the appt a month before (I believe it was their scheduling as to why I couldn't come in earlier). I don't need the hassle of dealing with unending phone calls/ required confirmation for an appt.

I think a lot of people are thrown off by Hui Dental because of their big sign on El Camino that makes them look super commercial and super impersonal but the truth is that they are really friggin awesome.
I went to Hui back in the day as a child and I distinctly remember their warm staff and pleasant attitude towards customers even now. I'm not sure if they still do this, but back then they let their young patients pick toys from a chest to take home. On the day they removed an early molar (or something... I don't really remember what I had to have done that day) I choose a fluffy bunny with big ears and the receptionist played with me until the procedure, which went by in a blink of an eye since they gently put me to sleep.
Ok, so maybe I don't really remember the details all that well because 1) I was like 5 and 2) I was gassed. But, I definitely did have the bunny because I took it to my second grade show and tell.
Anyways, I can attest that Hui Dental is still warm and friendly. Dr. Kriss Ghafourpour (yeah, I know, it's a mouth full) is my general dentist and also did my wisdom teeth extraction. He is sooo kind and friendly, soft spoken (almost too much so) and full of information. Dr. Kriss is a professor at the University of the Pacific, so he's very good at telling you everything you need to know. He did not pressure me at all to get my wisdom teeth pulled but gave me all the information I needed to make the decision when I was ready. He let me know all the details of that day way ahead of time. When I finally could not stand the pain that my teeth were giving me, he explained in detail what had caused the pain. The plethora of information was actually a relief since I had had two other consultations from other dentists, one of which who took one brief glance at my x-rays and exclaimed, "Yeah, we gotta take them out! All four of them!" (wretched whore). Whereas, Dr. Kriss explained to me that I only needed to have my bottom 2 taken out and it would even be risky to take out one from the top since it was very close to a nerve ending. He highly recommended that I be given gas to put me to sleep (which I would have demanded anyways) and the surgery went by smoothly. Of course, I was in pain the following week but that really can't be avoided. Dr. Kriss was even good enough to call me the same night to make sure that I was doing OK. Let me just say... he da bomb.
Wait! But there's more! I just had a crown replaced by Dr. Hsu and he's also da bomb! Like Dr. Kriss, Dr. Hsu was very informative and patient without putting pressure on me. He even made sure that my crown would be covered by insurance. Dr. Hsu gave me my smile back!
So, I really don't really have anything bad to say about my peeps at Hui Dental. (Well, I mean they are a little bit pricey, but I'm sorry... I don't really want to mess around when it comes to hygiene and my teeth so I'm willing to pay the extra dollar.) I can go in on a Saturday or Sunday to get my teeth cleaned. The office is clean and modern. The doctors are kind and friendly. Really, is there anything more you could ask for in a dentist? -

They are perfectly fine for a cleaning however don't trust them with anything else.
It's never the same dentist that sees you.
My husband had his wisdom teeth taken out here and spent 2 weeks in a MASSIVE amount of pain, because the dentists at this dental group didn't believe that he had an infection and hadn't given him antibiotics, despite the fact that he had just had an operation to have all four wisdom teeth taken out. We went into the office, 4-5 times one week, each time demanding to see a dentist and each time they sent us home with stronger pain meds, when what my husband needed and was telling them that he needed was anti-inflamatories and antibiotics. They ignored us, and kept saying "well I teach dentist school and this is what I tell my students" ... It took them 2 weeks to realize that he did have a MASSIVE infection, at that point, and then they prescribed him anti-inflamatories and antibiotics.
Again, if you want a regular teeth cleaning then this place is fine, for anything more serious, I would not recommend it.Comment from Paul H. of Hui Dental Group 2/1/2011

i came here to get my teeth cleaned by dr. jimmy kwan and he's really good at what he does. very friendly, knowledgable, makes you feel comfortable about a very uncomfortable thing: dentist visits. The facility itself is very modern, clean, and nice. Receptionists are friendly. The only thing is it's a bit expensive, depending on what kind of insurance plan you have. the process of my teeth cleaning went relatively well. as well as filling cavities and drilling teeth goes.
Located right at el camino and 9th street so it's pretty close to downtown san mateo. you can schedule your appt practically any day of the week. highly recommended if you dont mind paying a lil more. -

I have always dreaded going to the dentist, but not after going to Hui Dental and meeting Dr. Jason Stuan. He is a great dentist! He's so professional, knowledgeable and really put my nerves at ease. Some reviewers have said that Hui Dental is pricier than others, but trust me, your medical or dental health is NOT where you want to be thrifty. Cut out coupons and go shop at Ross but splurge on your health. You get what you pay for. Top notch equipment, office (open 7 days a week!) and staff. Additionally, the ceilings painted like a sky is amazing. It sounds silly, but you'll know what I mean when you sit in that chair for one hour staring at that peaceful sky.

I had bad dental health because I hated and feared going to the dentist. He's been my dentist since I chanced into the office in 1991; when I lived in San Diego I flew up for him.
He meticulously explains everything he proposes doing. He absolutely avoids unnecessary dental work. He always remembers that I need more novocaine and other special factors. He is calm, reassuring, professional, caring, ethical.

Awesome, awesome, awesome. Love Dr. Ghafourpour - he took out my wisdom teeth and made sure I had a speedy and healthy recovery. I return every six months for regular cleaning and have only had one sub-par experience - the dreaded floss!
Don't get me wrong, I would still recommend the place to anyone, but let whoever is flossing your teeth know if you're sensitive because some of them get a little gum happy. -

I have never been a big fan of going to the dentist, and have had some bad experiences with dentists in Half Moon Bay in the past (Dr. Maahs) botching a crown I had put in. So you can imagine that when I started having sensitivity in a molar I was not really excited to go have it checked out.
Well, I had switched to the Hui Dental Group a while back when it was time for a cleaning, and thoroughly enjoyed the visit, so decided to go back to them for the crown. Dr. Hsu is the first dentist I have ever had that explains all of the options and what he is going to do BEFORE doing it, and the preparation of my tooth for a crown was painless and quick. But at the same time, I did not feel like he was rushing to get me out of there- he was thorough but efficient.
Additionally, the dental hygienists are great, nice, thorough, and friendly. After going, I recommended that my wife and daughter go to see them for cleanings and my wife agrees- Hui Dental Group is HANDS DOWN the BEST!!!!
If you are like me and have anxiety about the dentist, you can trust these guys to make you feel comfortable and take great care of your grill.
