Five stars for the BEST. cheese. sauce. ever. I have a major weakness for cheese fries and consider myself somewhat of a connoisseur of the various orange sauces that accompany the numerous styles of fries we enjoy here in America. I can't stand the nacho goo that many establishments try to pass off as an appropriate condiment for fried potatoes (blasphemy!). The taste of Huey's leans more toward real cheese, but it's got the right consistency--not too gloppy but not too thin. It's seriously awesome. I love Hot Doug's, but the siren song of Huey's cheese fries is hard to ignore when I'm back in town for a visit and need a Chicago-style fix.
I should probably mention the dogs before I close this review. I can only speak to the veggie ones, and a charred veggie dog with the works--relish, celery salt, sport peppers et al--and a side of cheese fries are heaven in my mouth.
Hot dogs. Char burgers. Foozball. What else could you want?
I came here for the first time on a date and it was the best char-cheddar burger I've ever had. The inside ordering system is no frills, but they more than make up for it with tasty food. Eat inside and you'll be sitting on plastic outdoor furniture at huge tables. Ketchup is on tap, but the mustard is available on request -- and in little packets.
I wish they were a little cheaper, but considering the location I am not going to complain too much. The two of us had a meal and beverage for just a shy of $15.
If you're here with kids, this place is PERFECT! The brightly-painted insides and even a kids table make it a perfect post-baseball location for parents to treat the little'ns.
If you need parking, the secret is Ashland and Balmoral. There's usually parking there compared to Clark Street which is usually wall-to-wall.
I have found the holy grail of chili cheese dogs!
My god, the cheese they use for these dogs was so freakin good! I had to go back to the counter to order a second. The place is pretty small but who cares I'd eat these dogs in a crack house if I had to! The chili was spicy but not too spicy the chesse was gooey but not too gooey the dog was soft but not too soft. Seriously try it, you'll love it. It was also the best hot dog I've had in Chicago.
Best chili cheese dog I've ever had...there I said it!
I don't know why people are saying this place is expensive. I went and got a charred Chicago dog (which included the works, and tons of delicious fries) for $4.50... Regular price; not on special. I got it to go, and the whole meal survived the roughly 10 block bus trip. The fries were an amazing level of crispiness (I hate a soggy fry, won't eat them), and the hot dog itself was divine. No complaints - super duper tasty, and a great cheap eat!
I LOVE their vegetarian hotdogs, LOVE their fries, but their cheese for cheese fries needs an overhaul!!!!! I get it, they make it out of real cheddar, but real cheddar gets hard fast, and then starts sticking to top of your mouth, which is the worst feeling when you're trying to enjoy your meal.
Next time you swing by this joint, remember to introduce them to some good 'ol Velveeta for their cheese sauce...
Huey's represents everything good about eating hot dogs and french fries. Sure, the place looks a little run down but you're not going to go to Huey's to be impressed by the decor. It is what it is. A great place to get a hot dog. You can choose either char or steam on your dog, too.
On top of the hot dogs that they serve they also have burgers which are very good.
The french fries are really quite nice. I think their oil is a little hotter than most because my fries are always super crispy and taste delicious. No, they're not hand cut, but I don't mind if they aren't as long as they're cooked right.
When the neighbor across the street (a place that I shall not name) moved in I was worried that Huey's would go the way of the dinosaur. For whatever reason people like to patronize a chain instead of a locally owned place. I will -never- go across the street and will continue to support a local business that delivers high quality at a great price.
For the most part the service is great - there are a few regulars that are there complimented by the usual rag tag team of teens. Everybody is friendly, though, some overly friendly (especially the woman that hits on my wife).
Kid friendly and patio seating coupled with a great spot to grab a dog. What more could you ask for?
I strolled over to Huey's one night for a quick bite. I was overwhelmed by the enormous menu but a friendly employee walked me through his favorites and the specials. I ended up with a Cheddar Char-burger, the Friday night special, $7 with fries and a drink.
I walked home, hopeful about my splurge and I was not disappointed! The burger was amazing - not too thick, fit on the bun perfectly with lots of tasty toppings! I almost couldn't pull myself away from the fries to taste the burger! After eating the burger, I couldn't finish the fries! The fries were amazingly crisp and delicious even after the walk home.
I was impressed by this little gem and I'll be back to sample their other offerings!
...don't order a double. They were forced to change vendors. The dogs are huge now. Still tastes great!

Huey's is a cute "Chicaago-style haat dawg joynt", with many hot dogs options--steamed or grilled. I was excited to see turkey dog and veggie dog options and would love to give those a whirl. The double chili dog (two dogs in one bun topped with chili and the like) was calling me since I had awoken that morning. All the hot dogs come with fries, so you can't complain there either. They have a different, super reasonable daily lunch special each day too (no substitutions though). If you wanna get your grease on, take a trip to Hueys.
Monday special: blue cheese burger, fries and a drink, $7, tax included.
Moody's Bleu Burger, no fries, no drink, $8 without tax.
I'm not sayin' anything, I'm just sayin'.
They have $7 specials every day.

Great spot. Fries were very well made. Cheddar burger tasty with a chargrill flavor. Milk shakes most excellent.
I've moved away from Wieners Circle but this fits the bill nicely.
I was by Huey's today for the Wednesday special (grilled chicken breast sandwich). I asked them to put bbq sauce on instead of mayo, which was handled perfectly. The chicken sandwich was very good. The fries are good, but there is a lot less of them in the special than there used to be.
Also, if you're ordering for carryout, get your order wrapped. Don't get styrofoam. It dries the fries out.

I weight about 30 lbs more than I did last time I reviewed Huey's - 20 lbs from weightlifting, 10 lbs from Huey's.
I ate there today and had an "Ah ha!" moment. I took one of my wife's fries. I dipped it in her cheese. I dipped it in my chili. Simple pleasures for simple men.

I'm not a vegetarian (i love me some meat) - but I loooooooooove their chicago style vegetarian hot dogs!!! When I'm craving a hot dog and want to not feel entirely guilty about it - me and my bf go to Huey's.
It's definitely a lot more expensive than a hot dog stand that will give you a hot dog, fries and pop for like 2 bucks, but hey Huey's has got a variety of options and is a higher class type of joint.
The cheese (for the fries) is probably cheddar, whatever it is - it is YUMMY (like Weiner's circle kinda cheese).
Hm, I guess getting a vegetarian chicago style hot dog, AND fries and a side of cheese defeats the whole purpose of not feeling guilty. Oh well.
Try this place :) (if you have a little extra change in your pocket)
I give them 3 stars because the cheese burger was at least awesome.
I honestly felt like the minute we walked through the door they put the pot pipe away.
That said... If you're in the food service business, try SERVING your customers. Crazy concept, I know. I guess because me and my girl aren't regulars we didn't deserve the same service the other "known" customers were given. Anyways. I asked what the cashier reccomended, she replied, "everything". Oh man, I hate that response, at least be honest and say what you really mean "I don't give a rat's ass what you eat, I still get paid $8.50 an hour whether you're completely satisfied or not." The kid working the grill was even more apethetic than she was, "Just get what you want, you don't need advice. Everything is good." I ended up with the char cheese burger; which was crazy good. It was almost $6 bucks and didn't even come with fries...REALLY? Good thing my girl ordered a hot dog, they come free with those only. We ended up paying $16 for a crazy good cheeseburger....SERIOUSLY?
The prices are kind of expensive, and I'm okay with spending money on food -good food anyhow. The best kick in the pants expensive thing on the menu were the salads. Only $3.50 to add grilled chicken to ANY salad. Whoa! I hope that chicken weighs at least a pound and if not at least gives you a happy ending....
Bytchy, angry employees.
Here's a real story:
I went in there asking for the daily special: "a cheeseburger with fries." I said, can I have it without the cheese, and the woman behind the counter said "NO, that's how it comes. I'll have to charge you two dollars extra to remove the cheese."
Ahh, customer service. I went across the street to Hamburger Mary's and never came back.
Did I mention Big Chick's serves better burgers, fries and salads for $1 on Monday nights?
Don't waste your time on restaurants that hate their exsitence and their customers. Who knows, they could be spitting in your food. Allegedly.
I come here when I'm craving a true Chicago dog and cannot get down to Murphy's in Lakeview. The food here is great, but a tad overpriced for a hot dog. Nonetheless, the dogs are pretty good and the fries..yum! Make sure to bring cash, because like most really great hot dog places in the city they don't take credit.
Right off from the main Clark Street in Andersonville is this colourful crayon decor and chalkboard that makes me feel like I am back to my childhood with Lego vibrant colour tables and chairs.
Their hot dogs are terrific. I had the char grilled Big Jim's Double Cheese Dog that was overflown with condiments. It was delicious and full of flavour with skin that's crisp and snappy. It came with fries that were also very good, a different kind from other places, crispy on the dryer side and not greasy.
They do make-to-order so it does take about 10 mins or more to get your order so it's not your typical hot dog stand!
I also had their strawberry with malt milkshake. So thick and good like drinking strawberry ice-cream with the overtone of malt. Applause for a lunch dessert!
Super friendly and laid back service that also makes it a great spot to hang out.
I can't believe I haven't reviewed Huey's yet - it is seriously one of my most favorite things about Chicago.
Huey's was actually the first place I ever experienced a "Chicago Dog", so I just thought all dog stands would be as fantastic as Huey's - boy was I hoodwinked! I have tried plenty of other places in this city, even the reported awesome ones (like Murphys - big disappointment, bland dog and blah fries.) and none of them come even close to Huey's!
Char, cheese, the best sports peppers around, all fresh veggies - fluffy bun - perfect every time. Love the fries - cooked fresh for each order, piping hot goodness next to that colorful fresh cheesy dog? Mmmm.
There's a bunch more on their menu (including veggie options) but I've never been interested in trying them.
Also, they have a lovely but small outdoor eating area in the front, on Balmoral and Clark - makes for good people watching.
The only thing I think that could improve this place is if they served beer. Wowsers - they'd get 51/2 stars for that!
The food was pretty good, and I think I would have enjoyed it SO much more if I hadn't been hungover. So I definitely want to go back....
The fries are good but not greasy - they were a little on the bland side for me, but that's probably for the best since my stomach wasn't in top-notch shape. I had the veggie burger also, which was awesome. My boy had a hot dog (charred) and fries, and even though he will eat anything, he said it brings him back regularly.
Free refills on pop, and a bright dining room - also positives. The space isn't huge, but we went on an off time so there was no problem getting a place to sit and eat.
She was right. The Turkey Dog is EVERY BIT as delicious (and healthier!) as the regular dog. And on special - $5 gets you a Chicago (Turkey) Dog with all the trimmings, fries and a beverage.

Chicago Hot Dogs, and char dogs, need I say more? YUM! This place is a bit of a step up from most… Read more »
I have been to Hueys a hand-full of times now and everytime it has been a great experience. They have a big selection of hot dogs and burgers all listed on a chalk board behind their counter. I ordered the chili cheese hot dogs and chili cheese fries. DELICIOUS! I will say though, the chili cheese fries was a huge order and was just too much food. Decent prices. Great customer service and wonderful fatty food.
What else can I say , except that you can get a VEGAN CHICAGO STYLE HOT DOG HERE!!
And it's FANTASTIC!!
They do it right ('hood style) -- with mustard, relish, onions (raw) and sport peppers. And they even go the extra distance with a little tomato and a pickle and celery salt -- which is the only "other" way to do a Chicago Dog in my opinion.
The fries are good... although I kinda wish they were crinkle cut or maybe just "better" in some way, but they suffice. I certainly manage to eat all of them!
They also serve a great veggie burger!
Yay!!
One of my biggest pet peeves ever is being cut in line. Especially being cut in line by some smarmy douche who wants to chit-chat with the order-taker and uses lines like "ooh not for me I'm watching my figure!"
Normally, I would just chalk this up to me being in the wrong place at the wrong time, and not hold it against the restaurant, but honestly, it was just a precursor to an over-priced, disappointing meal.
So after Smarmy Douche was finished with his Charmin O'The Staff act, and the girl behind the counter effectively pretended like the "line-cut" never happened, I ordered a char dog with everything. It comes with fries. "In a hot dog town, we're the best around" shrieks a handpainted sign on the wall. Well, they are half right anyway. The fries were incredibly delish - crisp, hot and marvelous. The dog, however, was almost insulting. This skinny, inch thick thing was almost hidden within a giant bun and mass of toppings. If I didnt actually see it in there I would have sworn I simply ate a bun with some relish.
I dont need a hot dog that badly that I cant wait to go to Hot Doug's or Superdawg. Save the calories for them!
The food here is great. It's probably the most casual food in Andersonville, outside of Hamburger Mary's. And the food kicks HM's any day.
Burgers and fries, but **SO** well done (qualitywise, not cooking-wise).
The seating area is kind of small, so plan ahead if you go during a crowded time....or prepare to do takeout/carryout.
As all of the other 4-5 star reviews state this place is really good. We have been coming here when it was Big Lils and then bought by Huey's.
I have had pretty much everything they have on their menu multiple times. We are there more now that we are only a few blocks away. Great stop in place for a pick up order when watching the games at many of the food friendly drinking establishments on Clark.
Staff has always been friendly and prompt. Mostly younger kids working in tight quarters but have always been very accommodating.
Try out Huey's you won't be disappointed. Just an FYI on weekends and dinner times the line can be long.
Solidly good hotdogs, hamburgers, milkshakes. Just a little too pricey for what you get.
I've been hearing about Chicago style hot dogs for ten years before I found this place. Since I've never had the original, difficult to compare authenticity but overall - GREAT! Decently grilled hot dog, peppers, onions, mustard, relish, and most importantly DEFINITELY NO KETCHUP!! Not to mention a great side of fries. I'll be going back again and again...
They have a veggie burger that I've tried the first time I went there... don't waste your time or $$ on it.

I decided I was going to give a vegetarian diet a try. I lasted three weeks with ease and assumed that being a vegetarian simply fit with my pre-existing eating habits, as I was never really a fan of meat. I went to Huey's, and while they have vegetarian options -- I totally broke down.
I got the cheddar char-burger. It was perfect.
Haven't gotten a hot dog yet (blasphemy, yeah, whatever) but have also had their chili-cheese fries which were SUPER filling and tasty.
Fair prices, excellent food, necessary to return.
A cool little joint. They sell hot dogs and hamburgers. Hard to eff that up. You can dine inside or out. Free drink refills if you dine in. There is a thin layer of grease in the atmosphere that coasts everything. They have veggie options.
I went to Huey's Hot Dog's and ordered a hamburger just to be a dick. They didn't seem to mind...must be losing my edge. Theirs is a burger that really does look like the photograph.
This is my favorite veggie dog place around right now. It tastes like a real hot dog, more so than any I've ever had. Shit, maybe it is a real hot dog. Not going to think about it.
I think it's reasonably priced for what you get and the neighborhood it's in. The service is always pleasant, even when it's slammed, which is just about every time I've been there. It's fast becoming a Sunday hangover remedy for my friends and I. Not necessarily the best idea with the amount of tiny children that are usually there or the crappy music playing, but, somehow, it's always fun and satisfying. And the headache is always gone just after the fries.
Best. Damn. Vegetarian. Hot Dogs. In. America.
Let's all be frank :) vegetarian hot dogs are, for the most part, bland boring tubes of the by-products of making other vegetarian fare...pretty close in nutritiousness to their bloody brothers.
The veggie dogs here are grilled and delicious! They actually have flavor (the grill?) As my b-f bit into one and offered me a bite, and I saw the "flesh" of the dog, I was a little scared that he had been given a real hot dog! I still questioned it after taking a bite. But us vegetarians know when real meat hits the palate...meat has a very unique mouth feel.
But back to Huey's: proper proper proper buns with poppy seeds, and celery salt is a must! Fries are thick cut and fresh.
The chocolate malt is pricey at $4 but is delicious.
Next time you carnivores want a dog, but you're bummed because your militant vegetarian friend insists on Karyn's take them to Huey's. If your friend has a Chicago bone in their body they will thank you.
The milkshakes here are yummy and who doesn't like a little foosball action.
My issues is mainly with length of time it takes to be acknowledged and served. I went in with the kids I nanny and it took us 20 minutes to get two milk shakes. There were no other orders being worked on and the only other patrons were already in the seated in the dining room eating.
I've been there a few times and timeliness is always the issue. Otherwise the kids always love going there and I will take them there again.
Hot dogs are disgusting and I think I love this place.
Anywhere that serves a bleu cheese burger is alright in my book. And with fries and a drink for $6 on Monday? Excellent, except I think I'd like it better if I could just get the burger cheaper and forget the fries and drink. Do I really need all the extra fry/soda calories? No. Just a burger will do.
Mmm.. crispy fries with a veggie dog heaped with everything (including hot peppers and celery salt) and a cup for water.. for $3.75 (tax included). Cheap *and* tasty.
The first time I ate here, I was a little freaked out by how meaty their veggie dogs seemed. My fears were put to rest by the friendly gal behind the counter - apparently a lot of people think their order got messed up when its really just the "skin" on the dog. Whatever it is, now that I know its not meat, its tasty and keeps me coming back for more.
I hear their rockstar milkshakes are fabulous too.. stupid lactose intolerance. I'll have to find someone to go with some time so I can sample a milkshake without dying.
I love the outdoor tables for nice days like this, and during the week, its usually not busy, so they don't mind if you linger with a book.
Definitely the finest burger place around these parts, and very inexpensive.
The employees work pretty hard, and yet are always friendly and personal.
Don't expect much luxury here, it's simple but delivers. And the flavor is what counts. The house is small, which could be a downside if it's packed, but there are some chairs outside and frankly, it's worth it even if you have to take out.
I had the char-burger and the bleu cheese char-burger, also cheese and regular fries. Simply excellent.
Super friendly, cheap, and a great patio! A lovely hot dog stand when you're in the mood for encased meats.
Complementing the dogs, they also have hand-cut french fries, which were lovely.
When in the mood for a classic Chicago dog, this is an excellent option! Only drawback I can see would be that if you want two, you have to get two orders of fries. Why not a double-dog, single fry special?
In a world where there can never be enough back rooms with Foosball, Huey's (formerly, and still sometimes referred to as Big Lill's Kitchen) completes me. I can get what I want here. Well, okay, I can get a veggie burger and fries-- my gift to myself once or twice a month. I love that Colleen keeps this place tip-top clean and friendly. The menu is chocked full o' pleasures for everyone that I've brought through the threshhold and I would like to tell you one thing: listen for your order at the pick-up window, ok?
I can only comment on the vegetarian options, but they are consistent and, quite frankly, as good as I've had a veggie dog and dog-stand fries.
Plus, they have veggie chili, so I can get a veggie chili dog, veggie chili cheese fries, veggie Coke ...
The only thing that's less than super is the orange, melted-plastic cheese they use.
Otherwise, the fries are terrifically cooked, crisp and firm on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside. Always hot and with the longest no-sog time of any fries I've had smothered with chili.
To top it off, it satisfies my picky, meat-eating nephew. Plus, he gets to play foosball (free) while we wait for our food. Oh, and my crabby mom who had to admit that her burger was actually pretty good.
