I have a friend who would drive an hour just to eat at Hubba Hubba, so it was only appropriate that we take a slight detour through Flat Rock on our way out to Highlands, NC. The place is small but no dive. All seating is outdoor, though some is covered, and it's BYOB.

The barbecue comes out of a wood-fired smoker that's right out back with the chicken coop. The pulled pork is moist and smokey. It isn't traditional Carolina-style, but I think it's better for it. Also, you can pair it with any of their three sauces: mustard, savory, or semi-sweet. This little joint in Appalachia transcends place.

Barbecue joints are notorious for treating vegetables as an afterthought, but HHS takes theirs seriously. I had their collards and tried succotash for the first time, which is a beans and corn dish from the Depression Era. But if you think your pot likker and succotash are helping you identify with the salt of the earth, just remember that your cup, utensils, and carryout container are all made from corn. And on that note, their cornbread is good. It's of the variety that comes with whole kernels. And if you're there on Friday or Saturday, definitely try the fish tacos. It's admittedly heterodox, but you won't regret it.

One of my favorite blogs to follow is Kevin's BBQ Joints.  Earlier this year, I was reading a blog post talking about the favorite BBQ joints of Amy Mills Tunnicliffe.  When I saw Hubba Hubba Smokehouse in Flat Rock, NC mentioned, my first thought was, "Hey, that's close to my in-laws!"  Well this past weekend, my father-in-law and I decided to give it a shot.

If you're not keeping your eye out as you drive, you may very well miss this joint!  It is set off the road behind a collection of shops and eateries in Flat Rock, NC.  There is no indoor seating -- instead, there are multiple outdoor seats available ranging from picnic tables to covered seating areas.  Ordering is done at one window, and food is picked up from the other.  One thing that gave me encouragement was the big woodpile.  According to the website for the smokehouse, they are supposedly one of only 30 wood-fired smokehouses in the state of North Carolina.

Both my father-in-law and I decided to order the pork plate -- I ordered mine with cole slaw and potato salad, while he ordered his with cole slaw and baked beans.

The pulled pork had good flavor.  It was not overly smoky, and I could actually taste the meat and not some sauce.  The one word to describe the slaw -- fresh.  The slaw had very little liquid base and almost consisted entirely of veggie goodness.  The potato salad had a very interesting flavor -- it was a blend of a white potato salad and a classic yellow potato salad.

While ordering, I saw a slew of sauces at the counter (try saying that 3 times fast...).  I decided to get a sample of each and give them a shot.

I was expecting the tomato sauce to be a little bit sweeter, but it tasted fine by itself.  It gave the pork a little more flavor as well.  The mustard-based sauce is your classic SC mustard sauce and would work well on a pulled pork sandwich.  The vinegar sauce holds true to the eastern Carolina style vinegar based sauce.  The chipotle had a nice smoky kick to it -- not overpowering, but enough to balance out the flavors.  The tomatillo sauce was interesting -- it reminded me of some grilling sauces I've had in the past in terms of its fresh taste.

All in all, I enjoyed the trip to Hubba Hubba Smokehouse and would not hesitate to return there again.

I ate here for the first time the other day, and let me tell you that this is some damn good BBQ.

My bf and I shared two plates- the pulled pork and pulled chicken. We picked the avocado coleslaw, baked beans, potato salad, and collard greens as our sides. Each plate came with corn bread, which was absolutely delicious.

The meat was perfectly tender and flavorful. The plethora of sauces they had out complimented the pork and chicken very well. Yum.

As for the sides, the coleslaw blew me away- I've never had avocado in coleslaw before, and it was amazing. The potato salad was equally as good- the potatoes were covered in a mustard and dill sauce that was so yummy. I wasn't as impressed with the beans and collard greens, which were both standard.

My only gripe is about the prices. I just wanted a BBQ sandwich and two sides, which I can get at 12 Bones for $6. The sandwiches here are $6 but don't come with any sides. Ah well. We wanted to get a rack of ribs instead of the pulled chicken, but that would have set us back $21!

Does it compare to 12 Bones? Definitely. Is it as good? In my opinion, no. But it's still great food that I highly recommend.

I have no idea what you're doing in Flat Rock. My mom lives here, that's my excuse. But so long as you're here, for lunch there is no where better than HHS. Delicious pulled pork, ribs, black eyed peas, sauteed slaw, and more southern fixins. Go, you will not be disappointed.

Listen up Yankee: No beer is served (but the south is casual so bring your own is allowed, you get get it at the gas station up the street), cash only, and it is not cheap.

Be there a bit before lunch to get a picnic table or you can go up the stairs and sit on the deck next door. When the food runs, out they close.

When you're done, head up to the Wrinkled Egg to poke around and work off the meal.

The ambience and food at Hubba Hubba Smokehouse is a force to be reckoned with - A place that signifies true southern hospitality and delicious BBQ to back it up.

I yelped away during my week in North Carolina in search of infamous BBQ from the south. A couple of friends and I from work decided to stop by Hubba Hubba's on our lunch break. This place is tucked away in a residential neighborhood and there are two loose gravel parking lots with plenty of trees that shade the area and there are two outdoor patios to dine in. Luckily we got there a little early to beat the line and thank goodness we did! We had time to ask the order taker questions about the menu and she even recommended what sides to try (which are all EXCELLENT!). Prices are definitely reasonable and the quality of food is superb. I would definitely recommend the  1/2 pulled pork and  1/2 brisket plate with potato salad, slaw, stewed okra over rice, fresh garden vegetables or baked beans. The limeade and sweet tea is refreshing and if you can't pick one, ask them to make it half and half - The combination is great and there are FREE REFILLS so drink away!

We also met the owner while having lunch here. He is VERY nice and is a fan of yelp which is wise as a business owner. He reads these reviews and takes recommendations seriously. He even changed the to-go plates to biodegradable material because a fellow yelper recommended it. You can tell he takes pride in his restaurant and his customers. He even took is to the kitchen and showed us his smoker - which was pretty impressive.

Bottom line - Excellent food and reasonable prices in a great southern outdoor setting - I'm in ... and so should you! A definite "must stop" in Flat Rock =)

Everytime I eat at this place it's all I can think about for the next couple of hours.  Literally. I grew up in Memphis and am very seasoned when it comes to BBQ.  I typically go for dives in bad parts of town when I'm looking for pork, so I was skeptical when I first tried Hubba, Hubba.  Well, I'm a believer.  These people know what they are doing, and you can just tell there is someone back there who is obsessed with detail.  The pulled pork is so good it really doesn't need sauce, but their sauce is so good that you get caught in a dilemma.  They have many homemade sauces, one of which is based in tomatillo.  I thought, 'come on, that seems a little fru-fru.'  And then I tasted it...I ended up eating the rest of the little cup of sauce with a spoon.  My kids got the brisket sandwich last time and they kept getting mad at me because I couldn't stop stealing it from them.

And then there are the sides (I'm usually not prone to exaggeration)...their potato salad may be the best I've tasted.  Simple things like black eyed peas are treated with care at this place and you can tell the second you taste it.

Okay, last thing.  The fish tacos (available on fri & sat only) are ridiculously good.  I know, fish tacos at a bbq place?  Trust me, you will be glad you tried them--wood smoked fish in corn tortillas with avocado slaw and salsa fresca--washed down with a fresh limeade.  I could go on, but you get the point.  The beauty of this place is that it is incredibly simple, but you can tell the people who own it LOVE food.  The best food in the world is simple food made incredibly well.  That's what Hubba, Hubba does, and may they thrive.

Fantastic Q!  The pulled pork was amazingly delicious and tender, and can be topped with your choice of bbq sauce, including chipotle, vinegar, mustard, tomatillo and BBQ. Great selection of creative and soulful side dishes too! The avocado slaw was unique and a refreshing change of pace from normal slaw. The potato salad was perfectly seasoned and was a great accompaniment to the Q, with a nice cooling effect.

The smoked tilapia tacos, available only on Friday and Saturday, were to die for - and that's saying a lot coming from a San Diegan where we enjoy lots of great fish tacos.

The staff was friendly and helpful, a great testament to southern hospitality.  I couldn't ask for anything better.

If you give Hubba Hubba a shot, you'll most likely leave saying "hubba hubba!"

Love the vibe of the place, being able to eat outside among the trees is always a plus for me. As for the BBQ tho I'm kind of meh about it. It was good but not great. I had the pulled pork plate and it was missing some of the smokiness I look for. Maybe I will return and try the brisket (tho not to quibble but brisket is not NC style BBQ)

Hubba Hubba offers the trinity of barbecue, and is open for lunch until 3 PM.  You'll know you've arrived when your nose alerts you to the delicious wood smoke.  Great value, nice variety of sauce types, great sides--and most important--succulent, tender, smoky meats with big fat smoke rings along the crust.  Yum.

Hubba Hubba has mostly outdoor seating, so it's great for a beautiful day, but also has some covered seating.  Also does catering, and take out.  No beer that I saw.

Maybe it was because I've been eating primarily vegetarian for almost 2 months now, but holey smokes this is some good bbq!

This is a no-frills eatery...you order your food at a pick-up window, then either take it to-go, or sit at picnic tables in the parking  lot...but none of this matters, because the minute the first bite hits your mouth, you won't care where you are.

Traditional bbq joint menu, but their food all has a twist. They had a variety of sauces, from the standard vinegar or mustard, to a tomatillo-based sauce which was weird but delicious. The vinegar slaw is the best I've had, with green onions and cilantro. We were all picking it apart when we were eating, hoping we could re-create it at home. The potato salad used skin-on potatoes, and had dill. The baked beans...just darn good.

So for a perfect mountain day, have lunch at Hubba Hubba, do a bit of shopping/browsing while you digest, then spend the afternoon at the Carl Sandburg house...enjoying the hiking trails with your puppies, then playing with the goats. Excellent!

Wow, delicious. If you're looking for southern comfort food, this is it. My husband had the brisket, to which he gave a big thumbs up. He said the two sauces he tried were also very good. The mustard sauce was "as good as it gets." My daughter enjoyed her chicken sliders, which seemed to be the choice of children as it was a smaller lunch. I had the weekend special of the fish tacos. Also very good and full of cilantro and lime. It came with a pico that had some very fresh and almost sweet tomatoes, so good. The slaw was an avocado slaw that I gobbled up. I normally don't care for slaw, but this was delicious. Cornbread was excellent, not too sweet and nice and moist. The creamed corn was beyond decadent, with small chunks of bacon in it. And the collard greens had cloves of garlic. In fact, quite a few! It was also cooked with pork.

As for why this isn't 5 stars: 1. Served in styrofoam 2. Only cold drinks. Hot drinks needed to be bought in the nearby bakery 3. Only outdoor seating. Kind of a bummer when it's 45 degrees out, but they did have a big space heater overhead. Also, make sure they are open by checking the website and remember it's a lunch place!

Still, we will go back. Just when it's warm outside!

I find the food much too salty. Smoke flavor does not penetrate the meat enough which means they aren't taking the proper time.  Just OK. Prices are a bit high for BBQ. Potato salad was inedible.

We were visiting Asheville, NC from Florida and we have had BBQ from all over but this was by far perhaps the best BBQ I have ever had in my life. Fun atmosphere, wide variety of yummy sauces, amazing side dishes and everything was so delicious! We had the Brisket platter, pulled pork sandwich and ribs. All were out of this world. My favorite side dish was their potato salad.

Hubba Hubba is perfect for a quick lunch, and the food is amazing. Some of the best tasting, tenderest, pork you'll ever put in your mouth.  It's outdoors, you place your order at a window and they call your name. It has covered and uncovered picnic tables. You can BYOB, they don't sell beer at the place. But right next door is Dean's Deli on Greenville Hwy. Just ask them where it is. You can walk over there, buy beer and bring it back. By the time you come back with your beer, your delicious BBQ should be done. Enjoy!

Another great BBQ restaurant in a beautiful area. Ate here after leaving the airport and we were hungry after a flight with no food. The pulled pork, potato salad and corn bread were fabulous. My friends had the ribs and I sampled one-incredible smoked flavor. Prices are reasonable. We met one of the owners and he offered to show us the smoker! Can't find that hospitality in many places! My friends who live in the area eat here once a week and love it! Can't go wrong at Hubba Hubba.

we went to hubba during our vacation to hendersonville and flat rock, and we loved the food here.  hubba uses a REAL smoker for all its meats.  i promise you that you will enjoy this place.  after lunch, stop by the neat gift shop called the wrinkled egg (which is right next to this restaurant).
