Howard Brown is the number one reason I moved here from Memphis, where all the sliding-scale clinics were Jesus-based and the default manner of treating a heavily-tattooed person is to assume they are a drug addict.

it takes awhile to get in for primary care but once you are in, the quality of care beats most HMOs.  last year all the "women's  health" (pap/breast/etc) was free under an anticancer grant.

they have all kinds of useful programs from anti-smoking to family planning (yay for queers having babies!) to hormone therapy.  they also have a pretty decent referral program for psych issues.

they often have reduced fees at their convenient in-house Walgreens (who are indeed a bunch of dapper gents), and they have always been able to squeeze me in for any serious health issues.

the fact that this clinic exists and is so accessible takes so much worry out of my life. one day when I am rich and famous I will give them a million dollars.

My experience here was very limited, but I thought it was yelp-worthy.

I went in to get HIV testing, and--after waiting 30 minutes in the semi-full lobby--I found out that they only do blood-draw testing (as opposed to oral rapid testing), which takes a minimum of 3-5 days.

Further, there was practically no privacy in the lobby. The receptionist's 'office' is a partitioned desk which connects directly to the lobby, so all of your conversation with the receptionist--which includes your desired tests (HIV, syphllis, etc.), birthdate, and amount paid--is overheard by the other people in the lobby.

For the person seeking discretion and/or quick results, I found that TPAN (Test Positive Aware Network) on 5537 N Broadway does FREE, discrete, rapid testing.

I love, love, love Howard Brown.  As a poor uninsured individual, Howard Brown is my savior.  Although they were originally founded to serve the GLBT community, the serve the general community as well.  They accept insurance and have a sliding scale program.

There were some scheduling SNAFUs when I first became a patient, but in the three months since, I've been 4-5 times with no problem.  The health care providers as well as the entire medical staff are courteous and friendly.  They've gotten me in quickly when I thought I had a skin infection, address all my needs, and attempt to help me find other low cost providers for the health nees they can't accomodate.

I recommend Howard Brown to anyone who is un or underinsured. Unlike other low income or sliding scale health centers, they are a clean, professional organization. I don't know all the details, but they provide mental health services, as well.

Overall, a great service.

It's where I go for my healthcare, and all I can say is that the staff is reliably thoughtful and friendly. Maybe it's just me, but as a place to meet a sympathetic medico and get your scrips filled by an engaging bunch of dapper gents who are more charming than your standard-issue pack of pharmacists, you really can't do better. If you're any flavor of alternative, it's the place to go.

I have always been treated with the highest of respect, and the physicians here all genuinely care. They have sliding scale fees for those with little or no income, and in some cases there are programs they can help you become accepted to so that your medicines are less expensive, again if you have little or no income or like me, no health or prescription insurance. While some people think of it as a primarily HIV treatment clinic. I live very closeby and have gone there for other reasons and they are always very very helpful, and are somehow always able to help you feel better just by being there. Very gay friendly. But is by no means the criteria for patients to be accepted.

I haven't had any bad experiences here.  Every single provider has been wonderful.  I really feel like they've grown leaps and bounds in assuring very good quality care to their patients.   They also are very good returning calls left on the nurse triage line.

I have a few minor quibbles that have more to do with what i can only assume are stretched resources and high demand.  I wish I could leave a message on a provider's direct voicemail.

This is one of the most progressive health centers in Chicago. Originally created to serve the very underserved GLBT community, it has since branched out to the community at large as well as at risk GLBT teens (via the Broadway Youth Center) who may otherwise have nowhere to go.

Howard Brown also throws a great party...their charity events are lively, fun and a great way to give back.

This Health Center is wonderful! Overall, the services and the professional staff are amazing and caring. I have had all very positive experiences here. It accepts patients who are part of the GLBT community and is very sensitive to each patient's individual needs. The office area is very calming and there is so much relevant literature in the waiting area. There is also a Walgreens at this health center to make picking up prescriptions easy! They are always punctual and prompt with appointment times and very responsive with returning phone calls with questions and/or concerns. They also offer HIV counseling/testing, mental health counseling, and general medicine services. Insurances are accepted and also sliding fees are an option for those who are uninsured. They also offer a plethora of support groups for all types of issues. I definitely recommend this health center!

The Howard Brown Health Center is an amazing piece of Chicago's queer community.  They have mentor programs, free testing, sliding scales, and a billion other things that I can't recall.  I use the Triad and go to Dr Leaugh Roberts.  I highly suggest her as well as any piece of Howard Brown!
