HRS does a good job of appraising and educating would-be rabbit owners. My roommate is allergic to cats but I wanted a pet so am about to bring home a pet rabbit from HRS. They require you watch training videos and interview, as well as fill out an app and read up on proper rabbit care. These are NOT low maintenance pets! The organization and staff want to make sure that prospective owners know what all is involved and to make sure that the rabbits and owners are a good long-term fit.
All the rabbits here are really adorable and fun.
One of my friends recommended East Bay/Oakland(?) Human Society since those rabbits are more at risk of being offed, but I'd already been in process with HRS staff and one particular animal.
If you are allergic to dogs or cats but want one, you should definitely consider a rabbit! And they are litter trainable.
Staff seem overworked due to the low budget but they do a really good job all things considered. The place is walkable from Richmond BART.
This place is great to work with. You can tell they really know and love their bunnies. When my husband and I were looking to adopt a rabbit we stopped by here and they were super helpful to us. After looking at all their rabbits and not seeing what we were looking for, we described what we had in mind and they were able to recommend a specific rabbit at another shelter. Based on their recommendation, we went and saw this rabbit and they were right, he is exactly what we were looking for and is proving to be an awesome addition to the family. Thanks so much for the recommendation House Rabbit Society!
These guys are great. Doing a job everyday that few people know about. Richmond is very lucky to have them. I love bunnies!!!!!! And I love people thatt love bunnies.
This is a great organization filled with knowledgeable rabbit people, so if you are looking to adopt, or just have behavior/health/bunny-related questions, this is the place to call or visit.
They have lots of bunnies here for adoption, as well as a rabbit supply store in the front. I like to get willow balls for my rabbits here, as well as the little plastic containers of dried fruits (rabbit treats!) (that humans can eat as well!). Also, I wish we had purchased our rabbit x-pen here- it's cheaper than the one we bought, and cheaper than a lot of other places we've seen. So if you need an x-pen, go here first.
Overall I would recommend the HRS headquarters as a great place for rabbit education, behavioral help, boarding, adopting and bunny bonding.
I first became aware of the House Rabbit Society when an abandoned rabbit showed up in my yard. I knew nothing about rabbits, but I knew to take him to the local Animal Control would probably be a death sentence. So with the help of Google, I found the HRS located just two miles away from my home! Who knew Richmond was the International Headquarters for the HRS? While they couldn't take the little buns off my hands, they invited me to come in so they could take a look at him and see if he needed any medical care. They ended up loaning me an x-pen and gave me some hay so that I could take care of him until I found its owners or someone to adopt him. They couldn't be kinder.
Fast forward one year, that little abandoned bunny Mr. Binkles and his new girlfriend, Mrs. Peabody are fully enscounced members of my household. I've stopped by the HRS several times now either to buy a bag of hay and other supplies, or just to get some advice from one of the many knowledgeable rabbit volunteers. The HRS rocks!
If you have a rabbit or are thinking about adopting one, House Rabbit Society is a place you should know about.
ADOPTIONS
When you adopt a rabbit from HRS, you not only give a disadvantaged rabbit a loving home, you help support a non-profit, no-kill shelter. Furthermore, adoptions open up room for new rabbits to come to HRS.
BOARDING
When you must leave a rabbit companion in another's care, HRS offers boarding services (call for reservations). Boarding at HRS is a great alternative to simply having a neighbor come over to fill a food bowl; the boarders at HRS enjoy exercise outside of their cages, timed feedings and a cage clean-up EVERY DAY! Also, you will have peace of mind knowing that your rabbit (aging, special-needs or otherwise) is supervised throughout the day.
GROOMING
HRS provides nail-clipping and other grooming services. Inquire for appointments/pricing.
SUPPLY & GIFT SHOP
HRS has a wonderful selection of rabbit treats, hay, food and other supplies. Also find beautifully crafted (and even some seriously hip) gifts and t-shirts. Again, shopping here helps to support a non-profit. ALL proceeds go towards rabbit care and running the facility.
EDUCATION & ANIMAL WELFARE
As a no-kill shelter, HRS is dedicated to educating the public about the many factors perpetuating a cycle of rabbit overpopulation. Due to the unfortunate practices of many breeders and uninformed pet-owners, shelters become overwhelmed with abandoned pets and millions are euthanized every year. Although HRS can't save every single rabbit, HRS does save many and works hard to mitigate and prevent the abuse, neglect and suffering endured by many rabbits across the continent.
The rabbits at HRS are well cared for and HRS is a great place to learn about how to give your pet rabbit the best quality of life possible. All adoptable rabbits have been spayed/neutered.
As a regular volunteer here, I can attest that these staff and other volunteers are people who truly love rabbits and are committed to their happiness and welfare. This is a great place to adopt a new bunny or to board your bunnies while on vacation or out of town. This is also a great resource for information and educational materials regarding rabbit health and rabbit care.
There is an international organization dedicated to domestic rabbits (advocacy and education, NOT breeding) and their headquarters is right here in the Bay Area!
The dedicated staff and volunteers run the shelter on a shoestring budget, and are happy to help you learn more about living with rabbits. Yes, they require special supplies-- none of those dinky "starter cages" from the chain stores-- and you can get them here.
Before I adopted my bunnies (from PHS) I would come here to look around and get an idea of what rabbits are like. Of course, I soon fell in love and now they rule my life.
I'm not sure how you review an animal rescue operation, but I'm all for saving furrry lovable bunnies. Why? Because I have one asshole! OK sorry, i thought you were attacking my manhood for a second. Secret guilty pleasure: Schooling people on rabbit behavior and showing pictures. (did you know rabbits can be litter trained?)
This place runs off of donations and unfortunately it's stuck in the anus of the bay area: Richmond. Despite that, they make extensive efforts to rescue helpless animals from shelters and abusive people all over the bay area. I know most people are cat and dog people, but bunnies need love too.
=:X
We LOVE the House Rabbit Society! We rescued our bunnies from SaveaBunny, but I go out of my way to visit the HRS gift shop frequently to buy their bunny treats and toys. Feels so good to know that we (our bunnies and us) are also providing a donation simultaneously for all the cute little buggers in the back who are waiting for their forever home.
Millie and Nemo are personality plus! I wish everyone could know the broad range of affect these bunnies have. They ARE like dogs and each have VERY distinctive personalities.
Save a bunny!!! Visit HRS!
okay, i can't hate on a rescue shelter too much but the papaya tablets at the store were all expired. also, we took our bunnies to get their nails clipped and it took the lady forever to do it. if you need to get your buns' nails clipped, go to the oakland animal shelter on sundays and see Connie. She clips and cleans their bunny bits quickly and neatly!
