And to think I was going to Bumfuck Egypt for my salted black beans.
As they say, "always check your own back yard first".
Nice selection of Asian products.
Nice people run it.
I really like this little Mom 'n' Pop grocery. The biggest draw for me is that they have (I'm pretty sure) the entire line of Noh of Hawaii seasoning mixes. So perfect and a rare find.
Mahalo!
after moving to laurel, i visited this place before i learned of farmer joe's. not really sure why i abandoned house of produce ... not a huge selection, but their prices beat other nearby competitors and i'd much rather support a local shop.
staff very friendly ; in fact, this is the only produce market where i've been upsold. twice in one visit!
The search for an Oakland equivalent to my favorite cheap-o produce market in the City (4th and Geary Farmers' Market) continues. I followed the Yelp reviews to House of Produce, and it's ok.
The owners are extremely friendly and always willing to let you sample some of the newest items (yesterday I tried some little fruits called Jujubes. I thought that was a candy, but I guess it's a fruit, too. Clearly I don't eat enough healthy food.)
I like their selection of Asian food and ingredients. I guess my biggest gripe is that they don't have a big enough quantity of the produce they carry (just a small crate of each item) so, for the most part, you can never get anything that's really fresh -- you kind of have to choose the least rotten tomato, nectarine, etc. Occasionally you hit gold, though. And the prices are great!
I spend a good deal of my grocery budget here... Why ? They are a local mom's and pop's store. Nina and Kim are about as sweet as they get. They have a fair selection of organic produce + freshly cut up fruits, peeled garlic, seaweed, the coffee substitute and nutella I like. And best of all they deliver - so I can walk/bike there pick everything out or simply call it in. So I'm happy spending my weekly budget here.
i'm a big fan of the House of Produce. if you live in the area and you are tired of spending loads at farmer joe's and don't feel like going to albertson's go to house of produce (it's by ace hardware.) this is why:
it's cheap: no matter what i get i never spend more than $20, but i more often spend about $10. it's like magic. plus they sell stuff in bulk.
healthy choices: local produce, organic options and vegan choices for those so inclined.
also, a plus for me is they have some asian foods i can't find at the other grocers on macarthur.
so check it out and support local business owners.
Good produce at a reasonable price. This small, locally-owned neighborhood grocer is conveniently located by the Bank of America on 39th and MacArthur. Great to pop in and find almost anything you need: aside from fruits and veggies, milk, eggs, bread, cheese, etc. On the meat side, I saw sandwich meat and sausages in the cooler last time I was there; I'll have to check the freezer in back my next visit. Finally, I can get my Asian food fix here (they have my fave brand of ramen - yes, I eat it - and these Japanese crackers I love). The folks here are nice and always a pleasure to see on those quick market-jaunts after payday. :)
