All I have to say is those Garlic Knots.....I was sold after the first 6 that we quickly ordered more.  And I must say, the sprinkling of parmesan cheese was a delightful touch.  We also ordered sandwiches which were fresh looking and fresh tasting.  I must go back for pizza.

    Those garlic knots though.......

A friend of mine asked what a calzone was, instead of slapping him which was my first reaction, I brought him to this place. My favorite pizzeria in Red Hook...

Calzones - Deep fried, delicious mozzarella & ricotta inside, and special guest appearance by ham! I wasn't expecting the ham so it was a pleasant surprise

Rice Ball Special - Looks like a pint of red sauce with a baseball hiding underneath topped with a hint of ricotta! Good stuff, even picture worthy!

Grandma slices, vodka slices, take your pick you cannot go wrong! The seating are is large yet cozy. The bricks are beautiful and the room itself makes me feel relaxed, even with groups of construction workers and 1ongshoremen that often come to eat lunch here. If you are alone, no worries they also have a flat screen TV, so come watch a show and eat a real Italian meal. Oh, and of course they sell Manhattan Special to go with your typical Italian-American meal...

A great neighborhood pizza place.  The sausage and broccoli rabe pie is a personal favorite.

The calzones, although delicious, should be eaten sporadically for those of us over 30. Once a month sounds about right with plenty of gym time in between.

As good as it gets, regular Slices, deep dish, & upside down pies, pizza heaven !

They used to be surrounded by a bakery, a mozerella store, & a homemade ravioli store.  Now they're the last ones standing, w/ a new owner but same original pizza recipe, plus the additions of the new pies mentioned above.  Used to be a hole in the wall which was not updated in many years w/ some seriously old school guys making and serving......the old pizza guys are gone, good thing no loss in quality whatsoever, & now its nice inside, & backyard seating too! Not too many nyc restaurant stories end like this, amen !

Terrible crust, it was like a brick. That is why you should not reheat the pizza. Also lack of sauce and all workers seem unhappy working there. Maybe ok with a full pie delivery. Won't go back again.  However the decor was top notch.

Before Nino's became Francesca's up at Henry and Union I never came here even though I lived closer to Famous. But Francesca's sucked, and so I switched my custom and discovered: The Upside-down Pie. $22. Best pizza from a slice joint EVER. sauce that has flavor (herbs, sweetness but also saltiness in balance, good tomato flavor) on top of cheese on top of dough that is soft and chewy (in a good way) in the middle and then crisp and crunch on the bottom. Contrast of textures and flavors. Good heavens it is nice.

Different category from places that only serve whole pies, but as far as slices go this is the best in the city, though it too is better as a whole pie.

Renovated in 2008-9, the new space is big, well-appointed for a pizza joint, and comfortable. there's a back yard.

I moved to just beyond they're deliver zone - the Italian dude who seems to manage the place told me they would extend the boundary for me, but I don't know his name and so when I called I said "but the dude said you would deliver to me" and the hispanic kid on the phone was like, "no, you're outside la zona" and I was like "Curses!"

but if you pass by here, stop and get an upside down pie. While it's cooking, stop at the wine store across the way and get a bottle of Torre De Falesco Valpolicella Ripasso. go home with both and surprise your lover with a night in. it's a good way to spend the night.

Got a recommendation from someone that House of PIzza is one of the best in South Brooklyn.  We tried the Sicilian thinking this would be a sure test of "quality" Brooklyn pizza.

The pizza was TERRIBLE, tastes fake, almost like kraft cheese.  The sauce is tomato paste. There's nothing credible about this pizza whatsoever.

There is absolutely no flavor in the pizza.  I am 100% disappointed.  $25 pie with tip and one topping, and I get an Ellio's taste-alike.

I will not be ordering from here any time soon.

Ordered dinner from here tonight. Old school is right! I didn't get the full restaurant experience, but their menu is classic Italian takeout fare. I got more food than I needed in order to meet the http://Delivery.com minimum, but what I had was great.

If you've never a rice ball, get the small one. It costs $1 and is filled with cheese. That's right, rice and cheese, deepfried. I also got a bigger rice ball with peas and ground beef in it. That one didn't do as much for me. For my main course, I got a pizza roll with pepperoni and cheese -- the Lombardi or something. It wasn't bad, but I don't see the appeal; I'd rather have a piece of pizza! An for dessert, I got a cannoli. It's not as good as cannoli from the North End of Boston, but it's not bad.

The highlight of my meal, however, is the two bottles of Olde Brooklyn soda I ordered. I got the Greenpoint Grape and the Red Hook Raspberry. Both were light and not too sweet. I wonder where in the borough they're located!

One hassle: The delivery guy brought the food, but forgot the soda. He brought the soda 15 minutes later after I called him.

We recently stuffed our crew of friend movers with a couple of pies from the House. totally awesome. I find the slices at the place to be a little on the small side but they are tasty. Try the spicy sausage and peppers.
And if you don't have any guilt or cholesterol issues you might want to attempt the famed deep fried calzone. yep. deep fried.

Very solid neighborhood pizza.  Ordering from the House is a Friday tradition.  It can get very hectic and backed up on weekend nights which leads me to think of a story that got one of the previous owners quoted in the Daily News.  Apparently Barbara Streisand was in town and had heard about the House of Pizza & Calzone's notorious calzones.  So she sends her driver over to pick up a bunch.  When he tries to cut the line saying he's picking them up for Barbara Streisand, my man Vito turns to him and says, "Who gives a shit?"  Way to keep it real.  They had that newspaper clipping up on the wall for years.

Anyway, the  place changed ownership about two years ago and you gotta love the fact that the new guys respect the archaic rules of the old school dudes who used to run the place--namely no meat in calzones on Fridays.  Seriously, you cannot get ham in your calzone on a Friday.  And PS, I refer to PROPER calzones, i.e. deep fried dough filled with ricotta and mozzarella cheese... Not that bullshit that some other places call a calzone.

One problem that I noted earlier is that service can be very slow on weekend nights.  I have walked over there several times after the 20 minutes my pizza was supposed to take to find that it hadn't even gone in the oven yet.

Now THIS is the best pizza in the neighborhood.  If you want straight-up Brooklyn pizza, you can't do any better than this.  My favorite is a the Sicilian with pepperoni and artichoke.  Oh boy.  I'm already looking forward to pizza night just typing that.

Service is almost always friendly and quick (though I seem to catch them during slower times so who knows).

The pizza's good (as is the pasta) and it's well-priced, but on busy nights, the delivery is SO SLOW. Last time, we had to call and check in on our food TWICE -- 40 minutes late on their estimated delivery time of 30 minutes.

Eating in is probably the way to go. Stop by Brooklyn General, do a little laundry, or grab a bottle of wine while you're on Union Street and then stop by House of Pizza & Calzone for a bite to eat. The new back room has a nice open feeling.

I order here through http://delivery.com on the regular. It's become my favorite pizza place for lazy I-don't-feel-like-cooking nights. Everything I've ordered (including the novelty deep fried calzone) has been delicious and hot upon arrival, I was surprised to read that hasn't  been everyone's experience.
I'd give it 5 stars, but I haven't actually done the in-restaurant experience yet, so once I get that done, I'll update! Love the delivery service though :)

When I hear someone say "deep fried ham and cheese calzone," my mind reverts to State Fairs of yore, the agita-inducing quagmires of New York street fairs and certain early death from my arteries audibly hardening. Not that I've ever actually had a deep fried ham and cheese calzone before visiting House of Pizza, but I figure that deep fried Oreos might have the same effect. Anyway, there we were, so that's what we had, and without sounding too ridiculous, I must say they are glorious.

The place itself is relatively unassuming - On Union Street in Carroll Gardens among other storefronts and looks more like an ordinary pizza shop than anything else. After all, it is a pizza shop... Proudly advertised on the front of their menu is what I suppose is their signature item - The deep fried calzone. Filled with ricotta, mozzarella and ham, wrapped up and tossed in the deep fryer, it's exactly as it sounds. I expected some kind of glorified egg roll-type contraption, but the result was actually much better, thank God. I must give them credit and mention that it is actually a quite generously stuffed calzone. Too often, calzones from other places appear on the table full of mostly air and seeming like they're in need of something to help them out. At House of Pizza, this wasn't the case - We actually had to stoop to using forks and knives to eat it since it would have been disastrous otherwise. Improbably paired with a Manhattan Special coffee soda, another Brooklyn institution, it was overall quite an enjoyable, albeit nutritionally lacking meal.

It looks like they have other great things on the menu - Pizza, pasta, meat dishes and the requisite offerings of a place like this. I wish I lived closer to here, so I could try some of their other stuff. If you're in the area and looking for something different, this is a good choice and the fried calzone is recommended. Just run the long way home afterward.

House of Pizza and Calzones remodeled/reopened and I jumped at a chance to give them a try.

My rice ball, fresh mozzarella sicilian and grandma's slices, and cannoli were unforgettable. Thick and thin slices are both excellent.

I did not remotely enjoy the deep-fried calzone, however. Too greasy, heavy, and bland in flavor.

I will certainly be back to try: sandwiches, garlic knots, pastas, and salads.

House of Pizza and Calzones also houses a fine selection of Brooklyn and Manhattan sodas.

I like their pizza a lot. They have some good ones, like the "upside-down pizza" which is fresh mozzarella topped with sauce, and the "vodka sauce pizza", which is delicious. The grandma's is really good too. Never had a slice from them I didn't like. The inside of the place is very clean and they have a large seating area in the back which is open and spacious and a back patio as well. They have a large flat screen TV in the back too which usually has sports on.

Here it is, the home of the world famous deep fried ham and cheese calzone. It's one of a kind and it can't be beat. I'm a frequent customer whenever i get the chance and when i'm home in the NYC area. No where else will you find something so special. The renovations help alot too, it's now also a nice place to just sit back and enjoy a delectable mix of ricotta, mozzarella and ham in a deep fried shell.

    2.5 stars...(food alone is 2 stars)

The outside of this place is a bit deceiving, the place is actually very clean and extremely spacious, they have plenty of seats in a dining room in the back as well as a decent sized outdoor patio with a number of tables as well. The food is cheap (standard prices for Mom and Pop pizza places in Brooklyn) but unfortunately the quality isn't there. The food is about par for most places (which is far below the great quality you can get some places in the city). The name of the place is The House of Pizza and Calzone so I thought I'd try the calzone (especially since all the pizza looked like it was sitting around for many hours), they only had one calzone left of one type sitting by the deep frier. To my surprise the calzone was deep fried and was completely greasy and luke warm, very disappointing. FYI calzones are ALWAYS baked, never fried. I might go back at some point for a quick slice to try the pizza but I definitely won't be rushing back anytime soon.

I have issues with House of Pizza in general but the upside down pizza is to die for. While the plain slices are always, always overcooked and the vodka slice is yummy but salty, the upside down slice is pure perfection. Light but crispy bottom, perfectly crisp yet chewy crust and cheesy-tomato goodness on top. I once tried the deep fried calzone but the middle was cold (and, therefore not melted at all) so I never tried one again. I do like that you can get zepoles on Fridays and Saturdays and the renovations are a vast improvement. A previous reviewer was correct when they stated that the staff is usually glued to the tv. I have complained about the overdoneness of the plain slices for years to no avail so now we only get the upside down slices. My 4 stars are ONLY for the upside down pizza.

Yes, that is, indeed, a deep fried calzone.  Unfortunately, the deep-friedness, and the gooey ricotta cheese, are about the only things it has going for it.  Even with pepperoni added, it's still bland.  Delivery is very slow too.

I prefer their pizza to Francesco's up the street on Henry in terms of flavor.  Truth be told, the old Nino's was the best (the original owner, and when he came back).  But this place is great for their huge room in the back to eat with kids.  Grandma's slice is tasty.
