Looking for authentic Chinese food? Expecting great service? Don't come here. But if you are into great food and can get over the horrible service, then you're in for a real treat.

This is honestly one of the best Asian fusion restaurants I've been to. Despite the subpar service and the cramped tables, their dishes have incredible combinations of flavors. The first time I went, I had the scallop towers, calamari, and sesame chicken. I couldn't stop raving about the food every time I had my first bite of each dish. It was nothing I was expecting but everything I was hoping for.

I came about the House of Nanking by a suggestion from a friend. He told me, no matter what you want to eat (either beef, chicken, pork, or vegetarian) they will impress you. He told me not to order anything and let the waite staff order for you, you will be impressed.

I came here on a Sunday at 4:30pm.  I read previous reviews and was informed the service was hit and miss while the food was good. I also read that there was a long wait. I was expecting long lines but there were none. I was seated immediately as I entered.

I went to the restaurant with two other friends which were vegetarian. I was hoping the restaurant would cater to their needs of vegetarianism.  I decided to join their quest of vegetarianism.

For starters we ordered the fruit tea and blossom teas due to the chilly weather outside. Our waitress seemed in a bad mood to start but
when we told her we wanted her to order for us, she had a huge smile. We told her we wanted vegetarian food and no fish. She asked if we were hungry or starving. We told her we were starving. One of my friends wanted to order the onion cake and the waitress obliged.

Within minutes we were served our food. The onion cake came out first and it looked similar to a crepe with red and green onions inside with soy sauce drizzled on the top. It was very good and not too oniony.

The second dish we received was the fried tofu in black bean sauce.  The fried tofu was crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. The sauce was not over powering and we loved it. The second dish we received was the egg plant and greens. This was the house vegetarian special. It was flavorful and impressive. The last dish we received was sauteed thinly sliced greens and red onions. This was also very good and not salty at all.

I was very impressed by the food and service. The waitress explained every item that was served to us. The only reason I did not give the restaurant five stars was due to the fact the waitress was rude to other customers but not us. If the waitress' friendliness to us was spread throughout the restaurant I would have given The House of Nanking five stars.

Got to eat there twice during my recent vacation in SF.  I saw comedian and actor Hal Sparks leave as I was going in. He was doing a show at Cobb's in nearby North Beach. Hal has great taste in music, and apparently food, too.

Everything on the menu is good and they've dressed the place up in recent years. It's authentic enough to keep the local population happy, and visitors from around the world know it, as well.

Never mind the line, they get through it quick. It's cramped inside, and the service is as good as any Chinese place I've ever been (not saying much).

Minus one star for the customer service. "party of 6? U stay outside! Party of 4? Come in!  NOW!!" we waited outside for about 1/2 an hr before being seated. And they literally threw the plates and utensils at us.

Minus one star for the food residue on the fork they served us.

I do like how quickly they can whip up food dishes based on what u do and don't want to eat. For us we wanted "no beef & pork" so the waiter quickly said "veggie, seafood & chicken ok?" yes mam!

The food overall was "average Chinese food" although I'm not much of a fan. For starters, we had marinated bok choy (was a little on the bitter side but was rather refreshing to eat as an appetizer). Then came the calamari, which i thought was probably the best dish of the nite. It wasn't your typical "crunchy fried calamari" but rather a bit more chewy, but still good. It was drizzled with a coconut sauce that was actually quite tasty. The next dish was a "shrimp cake" which was basically Shrimp wonton with peanut sauce drizzled over it and I felt it was a bit overbearing & killed the flavor of the shrimp.  The final 2 dishes came out about 5 min later. Sesame chicken & fish filet with sauteed spinach. The chicken dish again, way too much sauce. So much so that i had to eat a bunch of rice to tone it down a notch.

It took longer for us to get seated, then to actually order & eat. Will i come here again?? probably not by choice...but i'm glad i got to experience what the hype was all about. Blah.

I accept the fact that the place is a little dirty with the mass of people in and out that the waiters don't have time to clean everything and make it spotless when people are waiting and hungry.  In order to save time, the waiter will order for you.  I like that and  it is part of the excitement and surprise if you have never been to this restaurant.  There is always a long  line out the door which (to me)  means the food is exceptionally good.  If you leave this restaurant off your list, you are missing out on something special.. Tourists need to understand that this is a gold mine in the middle of beautiful San Francisco.

the food was delicious, the wait was nothing at all, and the service was great. we also had someone at our table establish what would be the best meat options for us to share and then set off to the kitchen to work their magic. we were very pleased with everything that came out.  my only reservation is that they were a bit pricey overall.

What more can be said about a place with 921 reviews?   Well for starters how does it only have 3.5 stars??   That's ridiculous, this place is AMAZING!!

Went with a party of 8 and waited 15 mins or so for a table,  not bad at all!  Everything was served family style, the lady asked what kind of meat we liked and dishes started pouring out of the kitchen.  Every dish was perfectly per portion to our group size and it was the best chinese food i've had my entire life.

Highlights from the meal would have to be the crispy calamari, the chinese burrito, and the chicken and sweet potato dish.

i've been dreaming of this place and i'm hundreds of miles away...  when i go back i'm going to have to eat here when i first get in and again before i leave :)

Delicious. Delicious. Delicious.

On your first trip to House of Nanking, the owner (a no-frills kind of lady), will ask you: "Fish, chicken, beef, pork or veggie?" You choose and then she picks the specific dish for you. Moments later, three gorgeous dishes came out, one by one, that she had chosen for us. And they were all lick-the-plate delicious.

This isn't a traditional Chinese restaurant but you get the fast paced service with modern Chinese food. I can't wait to go back to House of Nanking for another surprising experience.

Chinese...but with a twist. Let's just say that I had a dish that included tortillas-definitely a first! Let them choose your food for you and you'll be a fan. Service is quick, I can see why people may not say friendly--but tends to be a lot friendlier, if again, you let them pick for you. I usually have a hard ass time picking what I want anyway, so I don't mind!

Oh also let us come in just minutes before closing and didnt rush us one bit.

This place is for traveling tourist looking for "Chinese food in SF."  It's hyped Asian fusion at its worst.  Take a quick stroll to Chinatown or go to Clement Street, pay half the price, and get much better food.

This place was on my to-eat list for quite sometime, but then it got closed down for health inspection/remodel (this is some years past), and when it re-opened, it was as popular and exciting as ever.

This is a really good, tasty place, but once you've done it, I don't think you need to wait in line for more (and there is reliably always a line).  Sure, sure, bring your friends when they visit, but I'm saying once you've done it, it won't be as tasty the next time and it won't be worth it to stand in line if you're ravenous. Two other suggestions I have are R&G Lounge and Honk Kong Clay Pot (now we're talking). Do the price fix at Clay Pot.  I'm mostly sad it's become less of a locals spot and more touristy.

2 things
- get the FLOWERING hot tea
- have Peter order for you - the whole meal.  don't be shy, and don't be a baby.  it's not going to be that adventurous of food, but if you think it is, then it's high time you tried "new food," especially chinese food.  It will be like $20/ person.

Off the beaten path but well worth make the journey through China Town for.
Came with friends who have been here before and they took care of the ordering.  We basically said 'We would like a dish for each: chicken, beef, scallop, tofu, fish and veggie. And soup'
Everything was amazing - nothing was too spicy or too salty.  It was exactly what we needed at the end of a weekend of partying.  Can't wait to come back!

Wacky place.... Great food.

The first time I came here was for lunch and it was friggin packed.... PACKED! You have to share tables sometimes with other folks cause thats how they roll in Nanking apparently. No big deal, but interesting. The guy came over and asked if we had ever eaten there before, since we had not, he proceeded to rattle off a bunch of stuff we would be eating and off he went. A few minutes later.... boom... some damn good food landed on the table as if it were out of the ether.

Next time I went we arrived later in the evening somewhat near closing, same outcome. It was all cooked to perfection, just to the point where it is not raw anymore, very fresh with no soggy overcooked vegetables. No thick gooey sauces, just very flavorful healthy food.

I am only in San Francisco a couple times a year, but it is now a destination for me. We don't have Chinese food this good that I can find in SoCal. I wish I could remember what I ordered, but it was a couple weeks ago and I just wanted to make sure people new this place existed.

I'm really sad if this is the best chinese food in SF... it might be and perhaps that's why there are so many good reviews- its all relative to what else is around.

I had the sesame chicken and the bf had crispy beef- which was not at all crispy, in fact it was quiet soggy and a lil chewy, with no flavor or sauce.

The sesame chicken wasn't great quality (you know, the kind of chicken where the few chunks of actual meat are held together with fatty ligaments that no matter how much you chew just never dissolve so you have to spit them out- yuk!)... the sauce was just ok.
The sweet potatos were the best part, but I've had better.

Don't get me started on the crappy, rude service from our waiter...

Also, They get pissed if you want to pay by card (like any asian place) and at first will refuse it, but once you tell them you have nothing else they reluctantly accept.- So if you must go, pay by card even if you have cash.

Bottom line- if you've ever had good chinese food (like the kind in NY) then you won't like this place.

I was recently asked to recommend a Chinese restaurant in Chinatown & decided to go to the House of Nanking. Although it might seem a bit touristy & violates the "If you're looking for true Chinese food, go to one w/ mostly Chinese patrons" rule, but I do recall enjoying their food the last time I ate there about a year  & a half ago.

Owner/chef Peter Fang opened his diminutive restaurant on the edge of San Francisco's Chinatown in 1988, & lines quickly began forming out the door for his accessible, homey cooking.

Since then,  the restaurant has doubled in size, & the quirky Fang works the front of the house while other cooks prepare the food. Visits from Food Network luminaries such as Jamie Oliver & Rachael Ray, whose smiling mugs adorn one wall, have helped maintain Nanking's popularity. Lines of tourists & locals alike often still trail out the door, rain or shine. Often, his more traditional neighboring Chinese restaurants sit near empty in contrast.

To eat at Nanking, one must be aware of how Fang operates. He delivers a brusque attitude (in part to keep the busy flow of customers moving in & out) that can take some by surprise. He likes to size up the tastes of the customers after a quick hovering & observational recon & tends to prefer to recommend, no -- decide what you'd like, if you allow him to.

And more times then not, he'd hit the mark. This most recent visit, he delivered a chicken chow mein & a beef wrap dish that met both our approvals.

Although there is no mention of it anywhere at Nanking, I recently found out that Fang also runs & owns a sister eatery, the Fang Restaurant on the 600 block of Howard Street.

Santa's yelper sez: "If you let Peter decide what to eat, you won't go wrong (especially if he has served you before), but the 12oz. Cokes for $2.00 a pop (no pun intended) was steep!"

Traveling to San Francisco with friends, we began a walking tour of the city from our hotel with one goal in mind - a restaurant where we could get good food and start a 2-day bender the likes of which the west coast rarely sees (we're all east coast boys).

Giddily stumbling along, buzzed on the anticipation and not alcohol (yet) we asked a passerby where we should eat in Chinatown.

You can probably guess his reply.

West coast (or perhaps more specifically San Francisco) chinese food is a much different beast than east coast chinese food. And dare I say much better. And I can go to sleep satisfied tonight stating that opinion based on my visit to Nan King.

The outside doesn't offer much of a clue of the delicious feast that awaits you. Nor does the inside for that matter. But you must persevere. You must ignore those slight misgivings your mind might be trying to dupe you with. After all, the brain doesn't have tastebuds, what does it care what you eat?

Back to the review. We walked in. We were handed menus. We perused, and debated, and wondered what to order. A woman came to our table and seemingly picked up on our confusion.

"First time here?" she barked at us in staccato, broken English.

"Yes," one of us replied. And like that, our menus were grabbed from our hand. Asked what we wanted to drink, we simply replied, "beer." A minute later, 5 green bottles of beer appeared.

"You like seafood?" the woman barked at us again. We all nodded.

What came next, between numerous rounds of unlabeled green-bottled beers were dishes of unbelievably good chinese cuisine. I wish I could remember what any of them were, or called, but since we didn't specifically order them, we simply dug in to each plate as it hit the table. I do remember at one point arguing over who got to lick the plate clean of the sauce a shrimp dish came in.

I can't recommend Nan King enough. I beg you to do the same thing we did and leave it up to your server and chef to choose your food. You won't regret it.

I stood at the velvet ropes 30 minutes before closing time on Sunday night (9:30pm).  It was as if we were trying to gain entry into an exclusive night club.  I was paranoid that we would not be let in, that we would approach the door at 9:31pm and be turned away in disgust.

At 9:29pm, we reached the front door and eagerly awaited the next available table.  After being seated, we quickly decided on five items to be shared between the three of us.

Even though the reviews here are almost universally positive, I was not impressed with the food.  We started out with little chinese burritos that had some type of beef and cabbage inside.  They were sweet.

We also ordered the pot-stickers, which were awesome.

We ordered chili eggplant, which was sweet.  Also, we ordered the famous sesame chicken, which was sweet.  (Can you see the theme.)  Contrary to the experience of other reviewers, our sesame chicken was not crispy; it was quite soft.  And sweet.

Finally, we had the garlic noodles, which were very good.

I think that I will have to give this place another try and order something else, just to make sure they weren't having an off day.  But until then, I say this place is Meh.

I've always meant to write a review about this place......quick and simple.

Took a weekend trip to Frisco awhile back, had some of the best Chinese food of my life here.  Nothing fancy at all, but my fiance and I enjoyed the food so much here.

You better believe that everytime I visit San Francisco I'm gonna want to come here for old time sake.

I grew up in SF's Chinatown and have always been fascinated at the amount of people waiting in line to eat at this place.  Granted, the line is full of mainly tourists but I still wanted to see what all the fuss was about for myself.

Aside from the flies swarming around everywhere and the poor customer service (what do you expect, it's chinatown!), the food was mediocre.  The "crispy" fried calamari, which was one of their suggested items, was far from crispy.  And the beef dish we had, although somewhat decent, was definitely not worth $15!

I can't believe after two dishes, rice and no drinks, we walked out of there with a $35 tab.  Definitely not worth the hefty prices.

If you walk into this restaurant wearing socks on your feet, prepare to have them blown right the hell off. Well, that's after you wait a few minutes in a line that begins up the street and ends in heaven.

I was introduced to this joint about a month and change ago, and my life hasn't been the same since. I like the idea that you can walk into the place as a group, get jammed up against another group of people at one table, tell the waiter that there are four of you and you prefer to not eat red meat, and the food will magically appear at your table, as if from the ether.

We had the fried onion cake drizzled with awesomesauce, mind-bending fried calamari (which is nothing like the kind you can buy at your local pub), life-changing sesame chicken with sweet potatoes, and DNA-altering fried tofu with black bean sauce.

The service was SUPER quick, but not what one may qualify as "polite," "not rude," or "non butt-hurtious." They do, after all, have a volume of people to move through the space in a relatively short amount of time.

And the blooming flower tea... You. Must. Drink. It. It's a chrysanthemum flower that blooms inside your cup, and needs the help of no sweetener on this planet to be perfectly palatable.

The best i've ever had. And i've had a lot.

I must have had a different experience than some other yelp writers, but all i can say is that i'm sorry you didn't have mine. Excellent, authentic, and not that expensive. Small investment with a wonderful return. As far as the line... it took maybe like 5 minutes (if that) to get in.

Here's my advice and comments to people who want the best experience:

+Get there 15 minutes early than you expect to be seated
+Don't bother ordering. Just tell them what you want to drink and have them order for you.
+Trust them, they know what food is the best on their menu.
+You're eating the food, not the ambiance
+ believe me it really is too good to pass up.

Thanks again Nanking!

No offence to anyone but as far as Chinese restaurants are concerned I thought this place sucks.  I was in San Francisco for a training class with my coworker.  Our instructor recommended this place so we tried it.  I should have known as soon as we walked in.  The place was full of non-Asian tourist type people.  The food was okay but on the pricey side for what you're getting.

5 STARS for their sweet potatoes - def the most memorable part of the meal and a must have. Slightly crispy on the edges with a sweet delicate sauce. Too bad they don't have this dish a permanment side item! It's only available as part of the sesame chicken order...

I've been coming here for years and it's always delicious. It's in a cute part of north beach at the end of Chinatown. It's a dive in the best sense as far as atmosphere, but be prepared for the traditional and somewhat pushy wait staff and crowded scene of an authentic Chinese restaurant (which I happen to enjoy). Get in where you fit in! Cuz it's delish. The flounder with eggplant is divine. Try to beat the crowds and go either early or late and try not to go on the weekends when it's at it's busiest.

I lived in San Francisco for 10 years and never knew of this place.  Shame on me because I missed out.  I was visiting SF for business and decided to take a client there per their suggestion.  My first thought was "eeack, I don't want to eat Chinese for lunch in Chinatown.  It will be busy and loud and messy."  I was wrong.  I truly enjoyed every bit of the place including the waitress suggestions, authentic ambience, and exciting vibration that fast paced environment gave off.  Oh, and the food was excellent!!

We needed to discuss business so we asked the waitress to come up with our meal choices.  She asked if we liked fish, meat, calamari, etc... with one exception, we ordered all and a veggie dish for our Indian vegetarian friend.  The tastes were excellent, the service was excellent and the price was a good value for what we recieved.  I think we all wanted to curl up in a ball and go to sleep afterward because we ate too much.

I really enjoyed my dinner here. It was packed full, but we only had to wait about 5 minutes to be seated (and it would have been considerably less if our party had been smaller). The service was a little confused at first, but not about anything important. We had to ask for water 3 times and somehow wound up with 5 glasses for 3 people. But they made up for that by bringing our food incredibly quickly.

And the food was wonderful. The sesame chicken was, as other commenters have said, the best I've ever had. I would also recommend the house noodles. I would even recommend the melt-in-your-mouth fried calamari, and this is coming from someone who has a pretty strict "no mollusc" policy (exceptions usually involve chowder with bacon).

All-in-all, it was an excellent experience. Contrary to what other commenters have said, despite the packed house and high turnover rate, I never felt rushed. And after a few communication difficulties were resolved, the service was quite good. The prices are not terribly cheap, but for what you get, it's a fantastic deal.

One note - all the dishes I had were very heavy on the garlic. This wasn't a problem for me, as I love garlic, but that might not be the case for others.

A garlic lovers heaven but a germaphobe's nightmare!

I went here because everytime I host speed dating in the city, I pass by this little hole in the wall & it's always packed with people. Finally trying it last night. We were seated right away but expect to share tables w/ strangers. Oh the chairs behind you will be touching your chair so you have to get up each time to let people out.

Don't be star struck by the previous clients. Rachel Ray, Jamie Oliver, etc (Pictures on the wall)

It's pretty pricey for fried calamari $13.95 that was soaked in vinegar, sprinkled with raw garlic (that's where the one star comes from)

Also ordered the scallops that were hidden in a pile of spinach leaves & spring onions. One scallop was cut in 3 or 4 thin slices so it's not worth what you pay for $13.95. There must have been 3-4 in total. Very sneaky. Both tasted great but I could get more elsewhere for the same quality & taste.

Getting to the germaphobe part. I'm a people watcher. I watched the servers. The same lady that took our order, handled several different pens, the fridge door, a cash transaction, 2 credit card transaction, used the computer and several plates, used her bare hands on the lettuce leaves!!! She was serving the family next to us. She took each lettuce leaf (cupped in her hand), put the meat inside then put it one in each of their plates. The family of 4 did not even care. I don't understand.

The same lady then continued on with her job then later went to another table & did the same thing. This time with tortilla looking things & once again, using her bare hands then putting the meat inside, folding it then serving to every person on the table.

The same lady went back to the food area, she put the back of her knuckles on this dish she was about to serve (to feel if it's hot enough i guess)  then she spoke to another server who did the same thing! The lady then put it back under the warmer.

By then my stomach had done a full routine of a triple back hand spring & I wanted to get out.

The place is a mess. They don't seem to have any storage so boxes of this & that are scattered everywhere.

The second star is for the tea served in  giant beer glass. It looked pretty. The tea, that is. It looked like a tiny bouquet of flowers soaking in hot water.

Not coming back ever!!!

Great food and not expensive.
Note that this place could be quite packed so you might need to wait for a table.

Mediocre food and service and cleanliness.  Whoever gave this a 5 was lying.  Hot and sour soup had zuccini, no mushrooms, chicken instead of pork, peas, and tasted like vinegar.  Fried calamari with lemon was okay, barely, but came with soup, even tho it was main course. Rice came 10 minutes later. Huh? Tea was ordered and none came.  Waiter stuck his thumb in the middle of my soup spoon.  I pulled out my hand sanitizer.  Price was high for small portions of mediocre food.  Give me a break.  This is a rip off.

It's not hard to find Chinese restaurants in San Francisco.  It is much harder to find any that rate above mediocre or totally predictable.  House of Nanking is one of the best Chinese food experiences I've ever had.  There food is delicious - the menu is totally interesting and the prices are very reasonable.

This is not your typical chow mein, general's chicken, sweet & sour pork Chinese Restaurant!  The menu is thoughtful and the food is delicious.  The staff is great also.  It was a really great experience, start to finish.

Ok - now I really do like House of Nanking.  It has definitely been my go-to place here in San Francisco whenever people are visiting or we want to go to a fun place for dinner.  But the last time I went, I just didn't understand why I continued to wait on line (sometimes for REALLY long times) in the freezing cold (welcome to SF) in order to eat chinese food.  Is it really good?  Yes, it is.  I love those shrimp pockets, and the garlic fish and the calamari.  But the wait is getting pretty old and I am starting to feel like I need to go find another legit chinese place that isn't so whored out.

But I've gotta say, I love their tea there, where the flower opens and grows throughout the dinner.  So pretty and so fun - but I can go to a chinese tea shop for that.

Conclusion: Fun to go to, but I don't think I will be going unless I know its an "off" time and the line won't require me standing in SF's sucky weather for more than 30 minutes.

OMFG I love this place. If anything, come here for the white haired dude. It's so cute and funny how pushy he is. When i go there I act like I'm so confused by the menu and here comes the white hair to tell you what you WILL order. Doesn't matter cuz everything tastes so good. My friend Le would say "I don't care if their customers are all white, I love House of Nanking" hahaha.

everything was oversalted to perfection! it was fun to eat with complete strangers but just not my gargantuan jar of flowered tea. i have to admit the saltyy salad was amazingggg...

try the sweet chinese pancake == especially if  you don't mind greasy oily fatty foods... it melts in your mouth (i guess that must be what the oil is for).
=)

**god, i hate when they bread shrimp! another salty mess...! gahhh!

I would have rated this much higher as everytime in the past i have gone it has been almost perfect. The lines never bothered me nor the cheap look of the place.

My problems is the last 2 times i was in there my blessed sesame chicken and salt and pepper calamari were not the same. The calamari was not as crisp and was a bit chewy which shocked me. It just seems like maybe they are letting their standards slack

Not what I expected! I was raised on Chinese food so eating out Chinese is mediocre and boring since I can probably make it better. But holy crap, I've been out done!
The Hot and Sour soup is much different than I've ever had. Peas and cucumbers? Not usually found in this soup, but they made it work. It was the perfect amount of vinegar to pepper! The chicken was cooked perfectly, although I much rather prefer tofu in my soup.
I usually don't eat scallops or calamari (don't like the texture) but my boyfriend was insistent on ordering it. I'm glad he did! The flavors were wonderful, and the sauce was the right consistency. (Most places will drown the dish in an over starched sauce.)
The scallops were my favorite, they melted in my mouth!

The best part - portions. Quality over quantity. A concept most places don't get.

Service is to be expected from a Chinese resty. Don't take it personal, the Chinese are just not the most hospitable people. The line out the door is worth the wait.

When I told my coworkers I was flying down to San Francisco for the weekend, they insisted I go here.  So I dragged my five friends over, and it didn't disappoint! They made me believe in tofu again. They found potsticker perfection. The chow mein was laden with delicious stir-fried veggies and fat, freshly made noodles.

Be warned, we did need to wait in line for a seat so it's not fast food, but it was worth it. Thanks, coworkers!

Cost/person to do it right: $20

So this place is a bit weird.  It's in Chinatown, but it's good Chinese food. I know, right?  Anyway, wait in the line, go in with a small-medium group, and don't order.  Instead, let Peter "take care of you."  You're just about guaranteed to get salt and pepper mushrooms and their sesame chicken w/ sweet potatoes, which are both very good, as well as a few other dishes.  He'll stop when you tell him or he's pretty sure you look full.  It's an excellent, stress-free experience with well above average food (esp. for the area).

Unfortunately, like just about everywhere else around there, it can be a bit sketchy outside, lines form, and parking sucks.  The service also tends to be relaxed/slow, but still very friendly.

Verdict: No complaints and several compliments.  Check it out if you're in the area.

I feel so obliged to hate on this place, given that it looks like such a tourist-y type place.  I just can't.

I sat and ordered the sesame chicken and some calamari.  I don't care much for authenticity, but if it tastes good, then the authenticity goes out the window.  Both of these dishes were good.  Very good.  And I did like how my tea was served in a glass designed for a pint of beer.

Color me surprised.

Despite the fact that its touristy and deemed overly "visible" by some discerning locals, I happen to think that House of Nanking is just what I need in a Chinese Restaurant--a place where I can get good food without so much MSG poisoning.

I'll tell you that Mongolian Beef, and Sizzling Beef are the best things on the menu.  If you don't want to take my word for it, Peter Fang, the man behind House of Nanking, will "take care of you," meaning that he will order something for you that you will undoubtedly enjoy.  You should take his world before mine, though, when you are looking for recommendations.  After all, he used to make all the food.
