4 reviews for House of Como
Ohhh my. So, this is one of those places that you go with a lot of people when you have a lot of time on your hands. It's not dinner-- it's an experience. Don't expect to spend less than 2 or 3 hours here since service is slow but memorable. The waitresses are a hoot and they might just tell you what you'll be ordering if you don't order correctly (that means that you absolutely must order the salad, bread and hummus).
The decor is either kitchy or creepy, depending on your perspective and how much humor you're bringing with you. The singing frogs on top of the juke box are only overshadowed by the spinning, light-up plastic platter that they bring out if it's your birthday. Sooo cool.
Anyway, go with friends, relax and people-watch. The characters who come here are just as fun as the decor. Bonus: you can bring your own bottles of wine.
I haven't been to House of Como in more than 20 years, but I am SO glad to know that A) it's still open, B) the decor hasn't changed a bit, and C) the food is as good as ever! When we lived in Evansville in the early 80s, we loved this place - the lamb kibi was the best (I don't know if they still serve raw meat given all of our paranoia these days).
I was eating Arabic food in Houston the other day, and I was telling our friends about my first experience with Arabic food in Evansville, IN of all places!
I cannot believe that no one in Evansville has reviewed the notorious House of Como!
This place is one of the last few restaurants with character in the city! I mean come on, people!
When you walk into this little nondescript concrete building, one of the first things you notice are the Christmas decorations. Yes, that's right - it does not matter what time of year you go, the decorations are up. Now, for some, this would indicate that the restaurant has a theme of some sort, but no. It seems as if someone in 1964 decided that it was too much work to take them down, and so up they stayed.
The christmas theme is especially strange when you consider that the food is this really wonderful blend of Greek, Arabian, and Mediterranean.
But the food here is one of the few things (and there really are only a few things) that makes me want to go to Evansville. The flat bread and lamb are especially good.
So here is the setup - you go in, feel like you are stepping back in time, sit down among the greasy tinsel garland, old light-up santas, and ornaments stained with fingertips and cigarette smoke from the past 45 years, you order your lamb, and then listen to "White Christmas" by Bing Crosby play on a RECORD PLAYER. The effect is sublime and surreal. You feel like you may be a bit player in "Goodfella's were it directed by David Lynch on LSD.
And really, there is nothing more interesting than David Lynch on LSD while you butter your 36" round flat-bread hot from the oven.
If you are in Evansville, or driving south on Highway 41 right before you get to the KY border, you have to go here.
The service is excellent and the atmosphere can't be duplicated anywhere else - you can keep going to Turoni's, Fox & Hound, and Hacienda - OR - you can live your life on the edge and try something different - something you can get no where else IN THE WORLD.
You will be very, very happy that you did.
First of all they don't take credit card! (At least a year ago they didn't)
However, this is one restaurant where it doesn't matter. The food is excellent. Always, always get a salad with warm bread. Honestly, the waitresses always make great recommendations. The menu is very small, which is always a good sign because they know how to specialize. The pork chops are some of the best I've ever had.
The atmosphere is also very good for a date or family meal. I wouldn't recommend taking children though.
My only complaint is the wine list is short.
