Burlingame, CA
I LOVE this place. I was a Cal Poly student a few years back, and the house of bread blueberry muffins got me through some tough study sessions. Their blueberry muffins are distinct in that they have more of a cornbread texture, which I love. They are good sized and have plenty of crunch muffin top goodness and a plethora of blueberries inside.
During my last visit to SLO, I had a asparagus, pesto and feta stuffed roll which was perfectly savory. They also have a great selection of sandwiches made with fresh ingredients and their awesome breads.
It is worth stopping in for a visit, even if you aren't too hungry, because they always have board with an assortment of bread and pastries from which they will slice you a generously sized sample. :) -

Organic and fresh ingredients make for delicious bread - especially in the morning when you can smell the 'warm bread' scent (you know what i'm talking about) when just walking outside.
My favorite is the garden herb bread. It has the right mix of various herbs, sundried tomatoes, and some sort of seed (sunflower?) that make me go gaga over bread. I'm not even a huge bread person, but I will absolutely eat bread from here.
The only downside is the location. It's on the corner of a one way street, and parking is very limited. But just loop around the block and you'll find a spot - which is worth it!
It also looked like they hold birthday parties for kids there - and they had little kids in the corner around a big table making what looked like their own little rolls. I won't lie - I wanted to join in. -

Great place for snacks, breakfast, lunch and bread! And they do catering and large orders too. Here is why House of Bread ranks in my top places to eat in SLO:
1. Casual, friendly staff provide generous samples and are always accommodating with silverware, water, plates, and coffee if you want to eat-in.
2. Breakfast and lunch items never fail to taste fresh-made and healthy. You won't be getting a greasy or sugary product that will slow you down for the rest of the day.
3. Because of reasons #1 and #2 combined: this is why my boyfriend and I would stop in for breakfast after 8-mile runs!
4. Favorite breakfast/snack item: I like the berry bar (so much that I wrote in to both the LA Times and Bon Appetit Recipe Request sections asking if they could muster the recipe from House of Bread...I'll let you know if they ever post it); my boyfriend likes the whole wheat cinnamon roll. Favorite bread: anything with pesto! Favorite lunch: it's all good, with top-notch ingredients sandwiched between fresh-made bread.
5. The new location is conveniently located on your way in or out of town. In fact, it was our last stop before we started the 18-hour road trip to move to Denver a few weeks ago. I will sure miss House of Bread!
If you do want to eat-in, make sure you bring a jacket as their only seating is outside and SLO can be breezy. Also, some people complain prices are high for the amount you get here, but these are quality products. Do something healthy for your body and grab a bite at House of Bread! -

Went here about a month ago for the first time after seeing all the glowing Yelpster reviews. After finishing my sandwich I was impressed by their bread but disappointed by what was sandwiched between it. I'm not exactly sure which sandwich I got (something with chicken and avocado) but the ingredients didn't seem all that tasty and were actually a little on the too chewy side.
I probably won't go back for a sandwich but I may have to buy a loaf of their bread sometime. -

Gluten-free caveat: this bread is fine if you are on a GF-diet because you want to be, but if you are on the Celiac desease/gluten-intolerence spectrum, proceed with caution.
We'd been told this bakery sells GF bread on Saturdays. Before buying a loaf I asked the counter staff about how "clean" their GF bread prep and cooking is -- IOW, do they have a separate facility, pans, etc. to ensure there's no cross-contamination? The two girls behind the counter had no idea how to answer my question, so that was a concern. I bought a loaf anyway. I had toasted some for breakfast the next morning and was sick as a dog by that evening.
I gave them three stars though, because it's a nice clean shop, and my husband and child (who can eat anything) said their sandwich and cinnamon roll were very good. -

I used to have an addiction to their raspberry pinwheels and their dakota bread. Thank goodness I don't live in the area now!
Even a harmless "walk" by this place turns into a sampling frenzy. And if I have cash in my pocket... then forget it! I revert to my old devious ways. Even when it's a day old, there's nothing a microwave and a little icing can't fix... Cal Poly students, take note.Listed in: SLO Down now...

There are a few food essentials that almost everyone needs to have in their refrigerators, especially if the weather turns bad. Among them are milk, eggs, and bread. Milk is gathered from the udder of a cow, eggs come from hens, but the ingredients of bread have to be gathered on a field, milled into flour, added with yeast, and baked. Unlike milk and eggs, there happens to be a lot of variations on baking tasty treats.
Enter House of Bread. It is a small but busy place. The product lineup changes daily, depending on what day and time you go (because some of their products tend to sell out much later in the day). There are also seasonal selections as well (like stollen, or Christmas bread). If you have a hard time deciding what you want, the staff is more than happy to offer a sample or two. My personal favorites are the chocolate zucchini and whole wheat breads.
Purchasing bread here also has its benefits. This place carries a loyalty card. After buying 12 breads, you get one for free. However, they don't sign the card if you buy rolls (which is quite odd, given that a pack of six rolls costs MORE than the big loaf itself).
Otherwise, if you are looking for an alternative to bread from the supermarket, try this place out. -

I was looking for Gluten-Free in SLO and this bakery came up. I was very excited that I thought I would get some great baked goodds that are GF, much like those from New Cascadia GF Bakery in Portland.
I was disappointed tough.
When I arrived, I was told that they ONLY DO GF ON SATURDAYS, and I was only going to be in town until Friday. :(
I ask the counter person if they did shipping and he said yes, however, he could not tell me what items they make that are Gluten-free, so I could not even place an order.
I give the bakery two stars because their products looked good and the shop was tidy, but no more than two for the poorly informed counter person. -

The aptly named House of Bread is just that. I counted 16 types of bread for sale during my visit, including raspberry swirl, oatmeal applesauce, zucchini, lemon, sourdough, garlic cheese, pumpkin, banana and more. They also had giant muffins, croissants, scones, cinnamon rolls, and sandwiches (made with Boar's Head meat). Plus I saw the bread on a cutting board by the register (free samples, just ask). Like the bread? You can also take baking classes there.
* Oatmeal applesauce bread: tender, soft, dense, doesn't taste like applesauce but the applesauce really adds moisture and a bit sweetness, the texture was too soft for me
* Jalapeno cheese bread ($4.99 for a loaf): soft, dense bread, it's really good toasted. When toasted, the soft bread has slightly crunchy edges and it's spicy & cheesy & warm at the same time. When it hasn't been toasted, it's too soft.
* Pizza roll ($2.75): big and doughy, like cinnamon roll only savory. It has tomato sauce, cheese, olives, and artichoke hearts. It was good though I don't like olives.
Everything I sampled was soft and fresh. I like my bread to be a little chewier/more elastic but if you like doughy, soft baked goods, this is your carb heaven.Listed in: Non-Asian European Bakeries, Central Coast Pit Stop

AMAZING BREAD. xoxo. I saw this while we were just walking along and decided to stop by. Little did I know what I was getting myself into. Sadly though, it was the end of the day and they had already closed their registers, but the guy was super nice! Not only did he let us sample, but he gave us the samples and even hooked us up with a few rolls of bread that they were planning to toss out. WOOT! I will definitely come back to visit when I'm in town again! =]

I've recently discovered this place and it's just wonderful.
The place is small but makes you feel like you're in a local bakery. The staff that work there are some of the nicest people. You just ask for a sample of something and they cut a piece of it for you. They're very generous with their sample sizes! They don't skimp out.
You HAVE to try some of their fresh pastries or loaves of bread. It's just so soft and fresh.
I've had a few of their pastries including the carmel cinnaroll and the raspberry pinwheel. Both were so soft and gooey.
I bought a freshly baked apple cinnamon swirl loaf and it's like nothing i had before. The loaf was crusty on top and oh so soft beneath it. They also put chunks of apple in there and it'll satisfy any sweet tooth.
Their berry bars are great too. It's like a short bread.
I'm definitely coming back for more bread and pastries. The prices are fair but I wouldn't get something every morning since it's a bit fatty and sugary. Do try getting some of their bakes fresh though. It'll be worth the trouble. -

This place is a staple! And I heart carbs! :)
Even though I'm sad that they moved from their old location, I think their new location is bigger and better. No bees flying around inside the display cases! More parking (entrance is on Higuera coming from down south).
I love their...
- bags of granola
- white chocolate scones
- jalapeno cheese bread
- blueberry muffins
- raspberry swirl bread (make this into french toast!)
Don't forget to sample!! Yum :) House of Bread is such a great store! They are always willing to donate to local organizations and give back to the community!
Tip: If you're okay with day old baked goods, check out the rack on the right when you walk inside! Most goodies are half off!Listed in: eat SLOwly

I'm not really a bread guy ... but this place was great. By far the best choice is the jalapeno cheese bread. With huge chunks of monterey jack and slices of jalapeno, it was literally a cheese sandwich. So fresh and filling.
The garlic cheddar and the cheese beer bread were also impressive but paled in comparison. -

Came here for a quick bite before driving back down to Orange County after spending the night in SLO. I could tell just by the smell when we walked in that this place was going to be good. Everything on the menu looked pretty good.
I ordered some sort of Turkey Pesto Panini and my girlfriend got the veggie sandwich. Our food was brought to our table and we devoured those sandwiches within a few minutes.
Of course we had to take some bread for the road so we bought some jalapeno cheese bread and some other sun-dried tomato and herb kind. Both were really good. The jalapeno cheese bread pretty much gone by the time we got back to Orange County.
I'm sad we didn't get to try the cinnamon rolls, but I guess that's just one more reason to head back up to SLO. I've been collecting a lot of those lately... -

I hadn't been to SLO in a couple years and panicked when I saw the vancancy on Higuera! Luckily I quickly learned of the new location and was relieved. Got some loaves to take home, and all are just delicious. Hard to find places like this! Big samples and great selection. Have never tried their sandwiches. I am going to be in a bread coma for awhile.

After all the great yelp reviews and driving by on the way to Ben Franklins...thought I'd give it a shot:( Being the I have always enjoyed Boar's Head meat, I knew I would not be disappointed. I got a sandwich... squaw bread was awesome, the roast beef was sliced thick, with the grain (made it chewy), tons of fat, two small onion chunks on only one side of the sandwich. Poor quality ingredients. Purchased a loaf of the cinnamon swirl, not hardly:( super disappointed, they should be honest and call it doughy dense white bread rolled in cinnamon. ABSOLUTELY NO swirls where present! Will not be back and will not be sending people to this business!!! The only reason I give two stars is because the unknowing lady who made my sandwich is working at a bad shop that will leave her in the unemployment line soon when they are shut down for lack of business.

I was disappointed that the Raspberry Swirl bread was all sold out!!!
Employees are friendly and offered samples. I sampled the Cinnamon bread. Wow, very doughy. The employee offered to hold one for me the following day, but unfortunately wasn't able to come back.
Walked out empty handed and head hung down :( -

I would rather eat Subway bread for the rest of my life. I'd rather eat bread from a bakery run by a blind, deaf, one legged mute with no organizational skills. Just bad, bad, bad.
Not good bread, not good staff, nothing good about this. Bread starts with crust and then you get to the heart of the matter.... that's bread. French bread, white bread, rye bread, all bread should be good bread. Bread is not hard. Bread is simple. Bread is everyday. Peasants in lots of places in the world make exceptional bread everyday with nothing but some salt, flour, and water; I know, I've been to some of those places. I've also been to places that take pride in their bakery. House of Bread seems to think they they are the experts on bread and will talk down to you about bread and how French bread or crusty bread it wrong, how their bread has flavor and character....
What it is, actually, is dry, flavorless, heavy, overly dense crap that I will never eat again, god willing. Seriously, I will buy my bread at Von's or Costco, as it is better bread.
It makes me angry, how these snobby assclowns can just fuck up bread, how they will talk down to me, how they seem to think that they know better. They don't. Don't believe and stop the madness. Do not go there, do not give them money, let them rot, like the shit they serve should be doing.
PS. Just to qualify myself, I'm from Racine WI and my family's bakery and bread history go back about 15 generations. Yes, I can track it to Denmark. -

Yummy!!!!
Great, fresh baked breads...what can be better for us carb-aholics??
We got some garden bread (which was sooooo soft and tasty) and a poppyseed loaf which tasted like it had some orange zest in it with a powdered sugar icing....i ate the majority of it on the way home! Uggh, I felt that bread moving to my booty, cuz when I woke up the next morning, my booty was incredibly doughy!!! Worth it though! -

The most laid-back, friendly staff I've ever known. I walked in there on a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day and the staffer offered me a cinnamon roll on the "House" to cheer me up. It worked.
They do great Challa bread and have a daily menu so you know whats fresh. -
Review from Diana G.
I have only tried four items from here, but each one has received 5 stars!! CINNAMON ROLLS!! You cannot go to House of Bread without grabbing one to munch on right away, or at least getting it to go, or getting it to go then eating it as soon as you get to the car because you can't wait any longer.. The are so thick, filled with cinnamon filling so that each spiral actually has a good amount of filling on it as you eat it - unlike those skimpy ones that lack the cinnamon filling and may as well be called bread rolls. The icing is also a plus, same as the filling, it covers the entire roll, thus each bite is as ooey gooey as the next.
Other awesome choices our family has made include their honey wheat bread, cheese bread, and raspberry swirl. The FREE SAMPLES are definitely a plus!!
Their staff is also very helpful when it comes to making decisions. Basically just telling me every time, you like the cinnamon rolls, you want a cinnamon roll, then get a cinnamon roll and satisfy that craving - good advice!! -

If you are a fan of bread, then House of Bread is the place for you!
My two favorite things here are the sourdough bread and the cinnamon rolls. The sourdough is fresh, light, and has a slightly sweet honey after taste. However, it is not very sour, which may disappoint the true sourdough fans out there. A regular old cinnamon roll with icing is delicious when warmed up in the microwave for just a bit. It is not greasy or overly sweet like Cinnabon. The caramel cinnamon rolls ad whole wheat cinnamon rolls are just not the same!
The samples here are huge! A meal in itself.
The staff is always so incredibly friendly and helpful. All the college kids who work here really like their job and are happy to help you.
This is a really small store, with no indoor seating. There is outdoor seating right on a busy road, so don't expect any ambiance when you eat your bread or sandwich here. This is a to-go kind of place. -

A delicious selection of 4-5 everyday breads as well as another 5 or so that are daily specials. They use 100% organic oats and the only sweetener is honey. Most selections are available in a 1 pound round or 2 pound loaf. The 2-pounders are usually about $4, which is more than I would normally spend but I'm craving it now and can't wait until my next trip home to pick up the Honey Whole Wheat.
They also make fresh sandwiches, but beware that the only meat option is carved turkey. I highly suggest the Pesto sandwich on focaccia.
A little expensive -- but the service great, they're generous with the samples, and it smells like heaven when you walk in the door.Listed in: At Home with the Fam (SLO…

Raspberry pinwheels with glaze. It's like a cinnamon bun but with raspberry. Healthier, right? Soooo good. Grab bread for your dinner (such as, the basil parm) and have them stick in extra pinwheels for breakfast.
The bakery really is is the back - these people get in to work at 5am or something crazy like that! Fresh, yummy breads every day! Hooray! -

Good Bread, so-so sandwiches... they have a great number of verities that you can taste test everyday.
Stick to the bread, it's well thought out and tasty :-)
We use the 9-grain and the honey whole wheat at home and it always delivers. We got a special order of garlic cheesy bread for a dinner party and it was "over the top" great! -

4 stars for the bread. 2 Stars for the deli. The meat and bread slices are just too thick and the condiments are lacking. I couldn't find a salt or mustard packet. The red onion was also sliced thick and getting a mouthful of raw onion is not a good thing. The ingredients are obviously high quality but they need to work on how they put the sandwiches together. I know it seems trivial, but there's a reason why delis don't normally do it this way. Please start slicing thin!
Update: I upped my review by a star. It doesn't look like they're doing the thick cut thing anymore. Good stuff. -

We stopped in for sandwiches. The turkey sandwich was bland and surprisingly the sour dough bread had no chewy crust and no sour flavor. My wife was so disappointed. My cibata bread was good, but the sandwich needed some seasoning.

Today was the first day that I ate there and mostly because of the sign I've been driving by on the side of the building for months that reads "Boar's Head"
When I first walked in there was an amazing aroma of smells that strike you full force before the doors even close. This is something that is rare in small places I think these days and was a welcome feeling. Up on the wall are several large images of pre-designed sandwiches and a small menu off to the side for a "create your own"
I ordered an Italian sandwich off their "specials menu. I went with white bread because they were out of sourdough, which does happen from time to time in a bread show... right? Italian salami, thick sliced turkey, cream cheese, black olives, season olive oil, and red onions. Normally it has pepperchinis but I had them held.
We grabbed a seat outside and waited for them to bring us our delights. Only needed to wait about 4 minute and our order was being swiftly carried to the table. And we dug in. Only after a couple of bites we were already talking about what we shoving down out throats. A tasty sandwich. Plain and simple, nothing about it was over bearing, which i find in the SLO are seems to happen. Everything was fresh and full of flavor. The cream cheese was a nice alternative to mustard or mayo.
Any downsides? Despite the food being good, and the surrounding scenry being good, the inside, selection, and price leave a little to be desired. I personally have never gotten use to spending $8.00 on a sandwich that I can make at home. To me this is a huge let down, I feel if you are a professional in your field there should be something that sets you apart from the "home cook" and nothing here, other than the bread does.
All that being said, try it for yourself, I tend to be more picky about this stuff than most, and I walked away happy so this place gets my vote and I will return at some point. Just won't become a "usual joint" for me.
Amount of items ordered: 2 (Soda, sandwich)
Money Spent: $10.00
Value Vs. Money spent: 6 out of ten. -

I think this location is the Original House of Bread. We found it while on vacation and what a great find. The sourdough and grandma's white are to die for.
We also fell in love with the cinnamon rolls. All of them. We found a local one near my sisters house and bought the bread and the cinnamon rolls but it just wasn't the same. Not the same gooey, doughy goodness.
Take no substitutions. This location is the BEST! -

This place had great bread, sandwiches and snacks. I just wish they would spruce up their new location a bit. Most of the seating is outside. The times I have been there it was windy and the glass walls didn't block much wind making it hard to enjoy lunch. They also need to replace or fix up their tables and chairs out there. The last thing was all the trash and empty plates that the staff didn't seem to want to pick up. It was disappointing because I really am a fan of HOB.

At House of Bread you can't go wrong!
I find myself drifting into this place on occasion when I randomly stroll downtown, following my nose to the magical aroma in the air.
Favorites include the cinnamon rolls and raspberry swirl bread... of course the Italian seasoned breads and one with cheese melted on it-- can't remember what it's called. If I was a local and had more time and money, this would definitely be a weekly stop for my bread supply. Why settle for less? Alas, this isn't possible, so House of Bread is usually just a treat for me. -

The cinnamon rolls are sinfully good, and the loaves are divine!
I come here for their samples and for the half-price, day-old loaves, which still taste as though they were baked that morning. They have daily specials for breads, which are equally delicious, but my favorite is the basil parmesan. They also make sandwiches on their homemade breads, which look mouthwatering, but I've never had one before.
Their staff is always nice and cheerful, are knowledgable since they are the ones baking the bread, and they are always willing to share samples. Yes! -

House of Bread has some really great bread and rolls. My roommates used to pick up a loaf of bread every Thursday during farmer's market and it would be gone by the next day. That says a lot because the bread is pretty big and dense, but it was so good that it was all gone in a day or two.
I haven't tried their meats or cheeses, but you can't go wrong with their loaves of sweet bread in quite a few different fruit/nut mix-ins.
