Started coming to this store after they relocated inside Hillcrest. This is where I come to get something I can't find anywhere else.Good clothes, great quality, and at a reasonable price. Ari definitely knows what he's doing. I am a not-easy to fit kind of guy and I am absolutely on a budget. So, when i want to get out of my usual black and white attire, I see Ari and, more recently, the newest Boi there, Nick. They BOTH have been able to push my limits as far as my clothing options without breaking my wallet.

This is a great little shop with lots of style.

A guy buddy was recently visiting me from LA, and I took him to House Boi in search for some nice decorative items for his new home.

The green awning and the rest of the store front is very inviting and draws you in immediately. The store has a great layout and, considering its small size, they really utilize every square foot of space exceptionally well.

The clothes are very nice and stylish. I even bought myself a shirt there. They have some lovely, stylish and unique household items and decorative bits and bobs, and some nice accessories for men (or for women who are not fans of the "feminine glitter sparkle" stuff).

The fellow working the shop was very friendly, had lots of personality, and really knew his stuff.

I will shop here again, no doubt!

Ok not for the faint-hearted...as on weekend nights this store is populated
with male models running around in their underwear. They form the eye candy for the gay male clientale that normally frequent this store. I was drawn here though by the unusual modern art that is displayed on their walls. They get fine art from local (and not so local) mainly uknown artists. And this is where I found a canvas art collection that I had to have. The colors in the art were vibrant, and the manager worked with me on the price. Haggled down from $500 to $350 and I went home happy with a set of art that looks fantistic on my wall. It is my favorite art. Will be back to see what other selections they have. The manager was really sweet!

I love this store!  Yes it's tredy, yes it can be pricy... but they do have the BEST sales if you're willing to wait.  If not you can get clothes here that you can't find anywhere else, and since they only buy a few you are guarenteed to be the only one wearing it.  Fun nick nacks!

The folk that work here care about thier customers and really know how to treat you right!  They leave you alone if you want or help you out if you want that.  Definitely check this place out!

Not a good store if you are out of shape.

I've spent the last two days rummaging through the vocabulary bank in my brain for the appropriate adjectives to describe my experience at House Boi's Sexy Santa Event that occurred this past Friday. Unfortunately, I remain somewhat at a loss for words.

I'll begin by discussing the clothing inventory. Fabulous! House Boi features lines that are extremely difficult to find unless you make a run to some of the major metropolitan areas of the country. Some of the most beautiful shirts by English Laundry were showcased that I simply could not resist. In addition, I ended up grabbing a cute little black, button-down jacket by the same brand that I fell completely in love with the second I put it on. I would find it hard to believe that anyone with blood flowing through his veins could walk out of House Boi empty handed; there seems to be something there for every kind of modern, urban male.

Now, let me tell you that from the moment I walked into the doors my heart was fluttering. I didn't need to worry about climbing on the elliptical machine that night for my daily cardio workout because my heart rate must have been thumping about 160 beats-per-minute after observing the scores of models and go-go dancers strategically stationed at every corner of the store. DO NOT come to a House Boi event if you suffer from ADD because you will not be able to shop with the amounts of eye candy sauntering around. I found it very difficult to stay focussed on clothing. Oh, and did I tell you that they had a Svedka bar onsite with some of the most gorgeous models serving up drinks? Dear God! I still can't get over it.

Throughout my visit, the staff were most helpful and professional. As I was removing items that I was interested in from the racks, they were set aside in a fitting room that was waiting for me -- a hallmark of a quality store. Moreover, the hospitable Ari, owner of House Boi, introduced himself and made me feel welcomed and appreciated. I was stunned to learn from Ari that the store has been at the University location for approximately two years! I feel sooooo out of the loop.

Truly, this establishment is special. I'm sold. Whenever I'm in the mood to pick up something fun, edgy, or cute, I'm going to make a trip to House Boi. You should consider doing the same, too.

I am in love with House Boi.  The mens clothing are expensive but so hip and adorable, and I am always trying to convince my straight boyfriend to shop there.  I love going in and drooling over the furniture...so much trendy contemporary decor.  Ari is a sweetheart and I love what he's done with the space.

Love the curb appeal, love the art, decor, clothing, and the fun.  House Boi is a Hillcrest staple. :)

    House * Boi
The name of the store says it all. A "one stop shop", if you will.
Find an Asian armoire, or mid-century chair for the house, and a new outfit for the party you'll throw to show off the new furniture.  For the last 2 years they have been selling unique pieces of artwork, accessories, clothes and home furnishings, many, the work of local designers. As far as furnishings there is a nice eclectic fuscion of modern and Asian.

What do you buy for a 19 year old girl who spends all her time on the computer??? Well, how about a purse made out of computer keys!?!?

The friend who often gets "thirsty" at the most in opportune times?? Maybe the belt buckle that doubles as a flask?!

They have many one of a kind or limited quantities of items so if yu like it,buy it.

By shopping here you are helping the local economy, a local designer and a local business, makes it easier to justify a little splurging.

Really good stuff. I got a lot of shirts for myself as well as a cool frame made of recycled keyboard keys. There was a 20% off sale going on so I saved A LOT. The guy behind the counter was also really helpful and knew a lot about the area.

Overall good experience and I'll definitely be back.

House Boi is a nice shop for the lesser known an local designer items. I say that in a good way as these designers are often the more talented of the bunch.

I applaud House Boi for being creative in their marketing and sales. The sales are more of an event than a tacky sign in the window.  Also their involvement in the community is something I love to see in local businesses.

Items are definitely on the pricey side, but that's what you pay for nice and one of a kind items.  Also as I stated previously, I'm happy to see that my money is going to a business that is active in the community.

The employees have always been genuinely friendly and welcoming when I've stopped in. If you are looking for new clothes, furniture or jewelry I recommend visiting House Boi.

I adore House Boi and their concept.  Their clothes are very fashionable, street wearable and they provide access to imported items that you can't find anywhere, which makes pricing congenial.

I also love that they have tons of accessories for guys.  Beautiful hand crafted, one of a kind necklaces and cuffs, they compliment the apparel well.

In addition to being a beautiful boutique, House Boi is also very active in the community, which give it kudos points for promoting the neighborhood and its brand.

The House Boi owners throw a great party.  I was in brief attendance for their third anniversary celebration and didn't get to do any shopping.  Since the store was crowded with people I couldn't get a great look at the goods.

From what I did see though they have the staples for creating a modern chic home and a slick wardrobe.  One aspect of the floor that demanded attention were the art pieces.  This one in particular stood out to me: [http://www.yelp.com/bi...]. Nothing makes a statement like a crotch bust covered with a pair of metal mesh underwear.

Walking from the front door to the back, we were treated to a light show, dance music, nearly naked go-go dancers and a drag emcee performance.  Thanks to Svedka, there was a free vodka bar.  My Rufskin clad bartender poured me a stiff vodka soda and the rest of our brief time was spent basking in the positive energy of the happy shiny smiling people that were all around.

The unique variety of clothes & accessories is phenomenal.  It isn't inexpensive here...but you get what you pay for. Totally worth it.  They are a great part of the Hillcrest neighborhood!!

If you're looking for a coffee table, don't waste your time with the jillion other furniture stores in San Diego.  They don't come remotely close to the oustanding selection and service that Ari can provide for you at House Boi.

There's no point in hanging around Antiques Row, unless you're really trying to evoke the Great Depression in your living room.  (Nothing screams "Welcome home!" like a Dust Bowl of ratty wooden furniture.)

There's no point in wasting hours in the consignment warehouse on Hancock St near Washington, trying to find the nonexistent piece that is simultaneously affordable, styley, and *not* broken.

There's no point in traipsing up and down Miramar Rd, looking at tacky, overstuffed, bloated furniture that belongs on the set of the Real Housewives of Carmel Valley.  (Note: I am aware that reality shows don't have "sets" per se, but I think you get the picture.)

Instead, just come to House Boi.  Chat with Ari, flip through catalogs together, discuss your likes and dislikes, and let him work his magic by acting as your personal furniture guide and then finding the perfect coffee table for you (at a reasonable price to boot).

    Next time, I'll know better.

Under a French Quarter balcony and the auspicious black and white striped entry awning lay the enormous windows of House Boi, occupying a New Orleans architectural revivalist building. The interior basks in the signature citrusy shade of permanent green light, and several vignetted sitting areas have clothing and merchandise carefully/casually laid out, showing its potential place in your home. Modern pieces of metal and resin commingle with earthy, wooden exotic furnishings. The entire feel evokes a sense of Western romance (buckles and leather goods), meets rocker (studded black jeans and wristbands), an aesthetic concept that is immediately upscale Californian cowboy, with metro-grooming but still deliciously scruffy, who also travels the world.

Between major Hillcrest streets Center and Richmond, tucked between CoShow realty and Cohabitat, and just down the block from Bite and Mama Testa's, lies the year-old neighbour House Boi. House Boi has been a presence in the tri-community area (North Park, University Heights and Hillcrest) for three years, once occupying a place further up University Avenue at the foot of the hill near Georgia, and happily moving into its new home in 2009. Part of the move was an expansion of floor space, opening the door to more merchandise. House Boi now has, among its established brands, Hard 8, Gypsy 05, La Familia, True Honor, Fender & English Laundry and partnerships with many San Diego-, Phoenix-, LA- and San Francisco-based jewelry, accessory and visual artists.

Once upon a time, House Boi's success lay in the gay customer of two years ago: sexy, urban sportswear with an eclectic bachelor pad of worldly curiosities, Buddhist and Hindi icons, and contemporary barware. There were a few furniture pieces, mostly bar stools, and some cabinetry. This first iteration of House Boi captured a sensual, rough around the edges, gay magnate... the exact type of man who would enjoy the staffing of house boys, and would buy their uniforms from the same store he got his weekend casual wear. It worked really well and sold its wares like hotcakes.

In the advent of Prop 8, the 2008 election, and most recently the shut-down of Universal Hillcrest near Vermont St, House Boi has expanded its cross-section to include the modern day gay American: a socially-responsible advocate who seriously collects fine art, enjoys high-fashion tops and rock and roll jeans, and supports local businesses that in turn support the local gay community. House Boi has entrenched itself with brilliant cross-promotional marketing for many Hillcrest businesses such as Bourbon Street, Numbers, and Bite. It frequently shows its latest merch at fashion shows in the above mentioned nightlife hotspots, and also participates in all of the big San Diego liberal community fundraisers. House Boi is one of the most popular boys in town.

It was just over a year ago that I, recently transplanted back to San Diego from Boston, looked up the most highly recommended shops on some San Diego culture blogs, and "House Boi" kept recurring. The day I walked in, Ari immediately connected with me and my partner, recommending businesses left and right, talking about art and music, and turning what could have been just a curt welcome into a conversation that held meaning. Since then, we have remained ever-faithful patrons to this important San Diego landmark. Recently, House Boi celebrated its third birthday in high style, and when Ari so graciously took time away from mingling to take photos for this review and allowed my camera free reign to snap away, I realized he always will be among the helpful, supportive patriarchs of this community, urging all of our artistic leanings and being the cool, approachable guy he always had been.

Come to House Boi on a typical weekend night and you'll still find gyrating gogo dancers, a vodka bar hosted by painted toned-bodied sprites, and DJ Marcel, a Hillcrest favorite, spinning. Paul, who has been such a strong element of my patronage to House Boi, will be behind the saleswrap smiling warmly, and Ari Clare, the beloved and welcoming owner, will be on the floor speaking eloquently about the quality and integrity of his merchandise.

It is still the sexy, urban boutique. But among House Boi's customers you will see prominent local figures, scores of hip three-piece families (including same-sex parents) saying howdy, Adam4Adam madams (the straight girl-besties that are the backbone of the gay community), and yes, straight men who want to look good to everybody, of many ages, races, and affiliations. That's the kind of diversity a San Diego landmark hosts, and House Boi enjoys that wide customer base with much-deserved loyalty.

Wow! We walked in and saw one of our fellow yelpers, Mr. David G, who I see got an ROTD for this place!

I was expecting to just waste time in here while the man looked around but I ended up holding up the exit. The owner offered me some white wine while we shopped and I eyeballed all the male statues. I also found some glasses I liked in there, two pairs actually.
I'm not sure what that say's about me since the store is focused on men's furnishings and clothing, but oh well, I'm not ashamed!

I'm sure we'll be back here!

The two owners treat you like royalty, which is always good for the ego. I mean really, there is nothing like the sound of your own name and these two guys have my down pat. My ego says "thanks." Anyway, back to the store itself. The place is a mix of men's clothing, accessories and home decor elements. Small quantities, so when you make a purchase you feel like you're a trend setter, not a sheep. Go New Zealand!

I was carrying on about how I wish I could find jeans that blah, blah blah, and BAM! a week later I got a call from Alex (owner) saying they ordered two new styles and he thinks it's what I was describing. They were! I bought them both! Case Closed!

BRAVO on the great service. I'm hooked. Oh and the clothes are good too!

This is a great hidden gem. The owners seem like super cool guys and are very help full. The men's clothing selection is awesome and unique. Many compliments have come my way when I sport their goods. Its a bit pricey, but no more so than Nordstroms and you wont have that embarrassing moment when you and some other dude show up at the club with the same shirt. They also carry some interesting home accessories so its a great place to pick up a new outfit and a gift at the same time

First time in the store tonight. The partners who run it are really great guys who care about quality products. Both really know their products and explain in detail who designs them as well as where they are made. Their knowledge of floor inventory was extensive. I told them my size and what kind of shirt I was looking for and they able to walk be directly to the items and then described them in detail. A lot of cool household decorating items here too. I plan to do some of my Holiday shopping here to get unique items for my closest friends. They also have modern furniture. I saw many fabric swatches, and they advised that they can custom order the furniture with colors and fabrics that a customer may like.
