I've learned that in NYC "boutique hotel" = tiny, old hotel

The reason I'm giving this place 3 stars and not 2 is because the staff was very friendly.

However, when I was visiting there was construction going on in the hotel!  They do offer a continental breakfast, but the paper announcing it in my room was a few days old and had the wrong hours (I almost missed it).  When I tried calling down to the front desk to check, I couldn't get anyone on the phone.

The bathroom was nice and spacious, but there was some funny smell in the shower that I couldn't figure out.  Also, the AC unit was VERY noisy (clanking sound).  I tried turning it off and then unplugging it, but I could still here the sound.... it was because other people still had their units on!  It took me a while to fall asleep which sucked because I had to get up early.

The cable tv picture went in and out.  I think others in the hotel were having the same problem.  I just gave up on watching tv.

Hotel Wales was nice enough.  You really can't beat the Upper East Side location.  (Crumbs is a block away.  Score!)

The hotel room itself was darling.  The building is definitely on the older side, which might bother some people, but I found it endearing.

There were some issues with our reservations, but I had nothing to do with that so I can't give any details.  All in all, it worked out and the staff here was definitely accommodating.

My favorite part was that we had to leave our bags there after we checked out on our last day there.  We had bought so much stuff that one bag was basically a Macy's bag full of shit.  They didn't judge.  I love that.  I surely would have.

Hotel Wales has its hold in a prime and convenient location.  A bit more than a block from the Jewish Museum of New York, right on top of quality eateries and a stone's throw from Central Park.

Hotel Wales offers a generous, free continental breakfast for a couple of hours in the morning as well as coffee and tea all day.   The hotel is undergoing what appear to be extensive renovations/improvements but our room was nice and cozy, outfitted with a TV/DVD player combo and an iHome alarm clock.  There was only a shower, no tub, in the bathroom and while the bathroom was tucked away there was no proper door.

The staff was great, refrigerating leftovers for us and checking us in early free of charge.  Guests have free access to a convenient business center to print out boarding passes or e-tickets and a sweet roof deck which I'm sure is THE place to be during the warm weather months.

We got a great deal on this hotel.  Hopefully we'll be able to visit in the future, with or without the help of Priceline.

Rooms are dated and hodge-podge, despite the slickness of the lobby. My single biggest complaint was the bed. The mattress was obviously old, creaky and saggy.

If you are going to stay there definitely request a room with an exterior window. Most of the cheaper rooms have window only to the smelly air shaft. We were lucky enough to have windows onto Madison, and I don't think we would have survived with out them.

The Wales gets 3 stars instead of 2 solely based on the rooftop patio. What an excellent feature. Nicely furnished, typically not crowded, with views out over the reservoir. It is a great way to unwind after a day of sight seeing and room service is available directly to the roof! Sweet!

Some cheap yummy eats are to be had in the neighborhood by heading up Madison further into the 90's. Good Greek, Chinese, Gelato, and Pizza. Conveniently close to the park, the Met, and the Guggenheim as well as the 6 train. Check out Feldman's Housewares across the street too. Its a very entertaining shop, full of gadgets and the people are friendly.

Staying on the upper east side has some benefits. Its quieter in the evenings, and not so tourist-y. The Wales puts on airs with its Aveda toiletries and somewhat snooty staff , but you can get a better bang for your buck than the Wales without much of a trade-off.

Nice service but not Starwood. Walkup, quaint. It's a decent deal because it's right near the park and close to trains, shopping...
My room the second time did not have a closet to hang clothes or an ironing board. But the staff is very friendly, and there is free muffins and coffee in the morning. I like it there.

We scored a reasonable rate off of Travelzoo and were more than satisfied with the Carnegie Hill location minutes from Central Park and the Museum Mile, the courteous front desk staff, convenient business center with free Internet access and complimentary coffee drinks and the cozy room. Even though the hotel is undergoing renovations we recieved top notch service from the minute we checked in (they even let us check in early) to the moment we unfortunately had to leave (the complimentary rose at the door was a nice touch). Contintenal Breakfast was yet another value enhancing feature. All and all I would strongly recommend this hotel. The only things that kept this from being 5 stars were renovation related (one elevator was out of service and there was a small awkward gap between the top of an interior door and the adjacent room).

I stayed here while my apartment was being renovated.  This hotel is a great neighborhood place, but I wouldn't stay here if I were a tourist.  The hotel staff is very friendly and helpful, and the interior is classic.
