This place is well sitauted in downtown portland, mere blocks from Powell's and the MAX light rail.
I got a last-minute upgrade to the "starlight" room, which had crazy bevelled windows and fun decor.
Very snazzy.
Free wifi in the room, complimentary snackies from the minibar, and a free nytimes every day but sunday!
I have never paid so much for a hotel personally, but I think it was still a good value.
So why not 5 stars?
A few minor things.
-Cleaning staff seemed to come very late, so when i would stop by my room, it still wasn't clean. Also, a few nooks and crannies were left pretty dusty.
-The Kimpton customer service line informed me that it would cost $25 to get a cab from the airport. It cost me $40, and they didn't mention that the MAX practically takes you from the tarmac to the lobby.
Motel 6 + Target + Civil Servants = Hotel Vintage Plaza
When I read the reviews I thought cool... boutique hotel downtown and starlight room, could be more than cool. Holy crap was I ever wrong.
My flight got in with me at the lobby for early check in at 11am, a time when I should have been good to go as I was informed when booking this room. Not going to happen was the words from the younger than high school staff. Not a good way to start. I could be assured that 2pm would be a guaranteed time. 2:15 I'm back after shopping and having lunch. Room is still being cleaned while the young inexperienced staff is playing verbal grab ass with each other.
I asked if there was a bar where I could wait while the room that should have been ready at 11 am was finished. The kid at the front desk said no, but I could go to the restaurant. What this kid didn't realize is that there is a bar inside the restaurant, something I found later that night.
2:20 I asked about the room that was promised to be ready. They're still working on it. 2:35 someone at the front asked if I have been helped yet... how cool is that?
I'm informed at 3:12 that my room is finally ready. On opening the door my jaw hit the navy blue carpet covered with stars. I thought I was in Target. All the furniture was mismatched and stuffed into poorly designed room. It felt as if this was an episode of Trading Spaces gone horribly bad.
Low lights:
* No queen sized bed, its a full size... huh?
* Non operational heather
* 3 kiddy pillows
* No blankets
* Noisy room
* Unable to close window shades
* No in-room coffee
HVP gets most of their booking from places like Priceline, Orbits and other discount services with the claim that this is a 4 star hotel. Sorry but this is not even a one star.
Awful experience.
BIGGEST HOTEL ROOM i've ever been in.
Free wi-fi, nice service, clean room/bathroom, cool lounge/hallway decor. We had two flat screen TVs in our LONGEST ROOM EVER.
One by the couch and one by the bed. Had a desk in the middle of the room. I never thought I'd complain about having too much space - felt somewhat too spacious for two of us.
The hotel was closer to restaurants we were interested in going - very convenient. One downside would be $$$ valet parking. We parked on the street overnight and moved the car after 8am..every 1.5 hours since we weren't doing much anyways til the checkout time.
I got a great deal on Priceline. The parking garage across the street was $18 for 24 hours which was better than the $31 for valet. The men that opened the doors in the front were nice looking and friendly - kudos. I had a complementary glass of wine to take to my room when I arrived. Perfect location. The room was clean. Good product. Very contemporary. I think because of my cheap Priceline rate, I got the handicapped room which had a awful view of a big pipe on a roof but the it was nice and I'm sure the ones with the views were better. I would definitely recommend.
This place was great!
This was a 7 night stay, so we had plenty of time to critique this place and I am thoroughly pleased.
Staff: Excellent. Friendly, but never over the top. Always greeted us with a smile as we walked in or left. The valets, who we saw multiple times a day, were nice and helpful.
Rooms: Clean, clean, clean. So, since this is a pet friendly hotel, I was a little scared. I have a pet dander sensitivity (not quite as bad as an allergy), but my husband reassured me I'd be fine. He booked a non pet room on a non pet floor. After 7 days, not a problem. No strange stains or smells. We booked a king bed suite and the room was a good size. The bed was very comfy. We had 2 huge flat screen TVs and a large desk which could've doubled as a dining table.
Dining: Pazzo restaurant was good, not great. Limited room service menu, but was tasty when it arrived. Late night menu not worth ordering. Peets Coffee is right across the street. Nice.
Shopping: My 5 year old son and I were able to walk to the nearby Pioneer Square and Mall every day with no problems. There are many other shops nearby as well as a Nordstroms, Macys, and Banana Republic.
Price: Great. Cheaper than Embassy suites, Hilton, and Mariott.
I'd give it 5 stars, but I'm still waiting for that heavenly Four Seasons experience. A girl can dream.
They need a pool. It was 100 degrees in Portland when we arrived and they don't have a pool.
Overall, it seems their renovations paid off.
What a fantastic stay! Our first room was well decorated, had a nice bathroom, and a flat screen tv. I really enjoyed the layout and overal decor of the hotel, not to mention the great dessert wine selection of the italian restaurant downstairs.
The happy hour with free wine tasting and apps was great when we were just heading out to dinner, but the happy hour wii games were something fun and different!
The Front Desk was great to us, especially Gabrielle who kept an eye out for an opening of one of thier Starlight rooms... which we did get an upgrade to and a personal tour of our corner penthouse room by Matt, the super nice guy who helped line it up for us. THANKS!!!
We had two other couples from our group that stayed at other places (the Benson), and let me just say that they were jealous and wanted to sleep in our bathtub and sofa if they could just stay in the awesome room with 180 degree angle of the sunset and sky, star carpet, and a fantastic little entertaining area (which we did). Such a hit!
Hotel Vintage Plaza? Yet another example of how perfectly Kimpton Hotels creates, well, hotels....
Slightly funky, comfy beds, walls nothing but windows, huge bathroom stocked with Aveda products, incredibly helpful and professional staff....Not to mention dog-friendly for our 75-lb companion, who had not merely the king bed but also a chaise lounge on which to rest or look out the window at traffic, protest parades, or a street crew filming a commercial. Finally, it's difficult to surpass this fantastic location downtown, several blocks from Powell's one way and the waterfront the other. All for around $130 a night!
One tip, if you're driving....The hotel website advertises valet parking for $30, but we had little difficulty showing up on a Saturday afternoon and finding a nearby parking lot for $7 per day instead. If you don't mind walking a few blocks with your bags and aren't worried about your car overnight, there are several parking decks and small lots in the nearby streets.
Already hoping for my next weekend getaway....
Who wouldn't like a hotel that let's their guests bring their dogs! The Hotel Vintage Plaza is centrally located in Downtown Portland and is an easy walk to restaurants and nightlife in the Pearl District and China Town.
The hotel is pleasantly decorated with a contemporary flair. The staff is extremely helpful and very friendly.
Our room was small, but hand a queen sized bed, desk. dresser, and flat panel TV. The bathroom was a nice size with Aveda toiletries. The bathroom had both men & women's robes.
Parking is by valet. Call down to the front and your car will be ready in about 10 minutes.
Wow.
I know I know a few other words than wow, but really, wow, seems to fit. I stayed at the Vintage Plaza hotel for a lovely 4 nights while I gallivanted about Portland, partaking in its fine liquid and edible offerings and each and every time i walked into my room during the day or at night's end...I smiled. I smiled and giggled at the room that is, the Starlight Room.
You think you've seen themes in hotel rooms before. Sure, there's a zen theme or a water theme, but a star theme? Ohhhhhh no, you haven't seen a star theme like this.
The carpets. Oh yes, they had stars on them. Yellow ones. On a dark blue sky background.
The headboard. Oh yes. Stars on it. In blue and pewter colors colliding like a startastical collision of space and sleep.
The windows. Oh yes. Stars across the sky could be seen with a simple flick of a switch as the giant screens mechanically roll back to present to you, the Portland sky.
Stars, stars and more stars. And did I love it? Of course I loved it. What is not to love about a zany star filled room with a comfy bed, a view of people working in the building facing you as you casually roll out of bed around 10am. What's not to love about the sound of neighboring rooms rolling back their star window covers around 11am. What's not to love about a hotel that has a wine happy hour and a tremendously helpful and friendly staff.
What's not to love? There is NOTHING not to love about this place and I will most definitely stay here again anytime!
The property: great location downtown, easy access, lots within walking distance. The elevators are quick and the rooms elegantly appointed. The bathroom was big and had lots of fluffy towels, and Aveda bath products were provided. The bed is comfortable and has nice linens and lots of pillows. There was a coffee maker with good coffee, hair dryer, and robes. The alarm clock was broken, I called down and told them, but they didn't replace it the next day. The TV remote didn't work well, but I didn't bother to call about it. The walls are thin; I finally turned off the fan in the room and could hear all the bumps and movement of my fellow guests, so I turned the fan back on.
The people: smiles and help from every member of staff. The valet remembered my name, even when I lost my ticket. The maids were pleasant and did their work with no intrusion. I asked for directions and was given a printout of mapquest directions. Service is attentive but not intrusive, and I was impressed with the professionalism and courtesy of the staff. My husband ordered flowers for me that morning and they were waiting in my room when I arrived in the afternoon; that was a lovely touch and he was impressed staff delivered the flowers right to my room before my arrival.
Special goodies: The Oregonian and New York Times at the door every morning, coffee bar in the am with takeout cups, and wine bar in the evening and you can take your wine to your room. There was a toasty fire to sit by in the lobby.
Parking is 26 dollars, the hotel is on the Max line, and I heard there were parking garages around that were less expensive.
I would definitely stay here again. I enjoyed it, felt pampered without indulging in the extra services, and found the staff to be delightful.
We came up from Seattle for a quick weekend. We booked a double Queen bed room, and were situated on the 3rd floor. The staff was EXTREMELY helpful and friendly. The room was very nice and clean. It was on the small side, but, we didn't spend a lot of time in the room so it was ok. We would stay again, but there are other hotels in the area we'd like to check out on our next visit. Friends stayed next door at the Hotel Lucia and said our room was bigger (hard to imagine as our room was very small.) Nice place. Glad we paid the AAA discount rate though (room was $130 instead of $160). Not sure if I would have been as happy if the room was $160+
We came here for our anniversary and couldn't have asked for more.
the Garden Spa room was roomy overall and nicely decorated with mirrors and a neat little sofa. Of course, the real focal point of the suite was outside - the private hottub. Hell yes! It wasn't totally private as anyone on the top floors of the office building across the street could see you, but hitting it around 1 AM we didn't have to worry about that. They say it's designed for 2, but in reality you could have fit 5 people in it.
The staff was very friendly, from the valet to the bellhop to the guy who brought us room services with our robes barely covering us. Also stopped in for some yummy drinks at the bar downstairs, and Mariposas the next morning!
Best of all, my Kimpton rewards program knocked off 20% when using an American Express card, bringing the total price to well under $300 for the night.
My only complaint was the bathroom and fitness room were pretty cramped. For something roomier, check out the 5th Avenue a couple blocks away.
I wish I had half as pleasant of an experience as the recent Yelper that also stayed in the Starlight Room.
I checked in Sunday night as part of a 3-day weekend. I was expecting a fun room that was nice and comfortable. The room definitely had a theme, but it looked cheap. The bed was a double, not even a queen, and barely comfortable. We had to leave our first room because when we checked in, a swarm of fruit flies greeted us in the room. While we were transferred to another Starlight Room, it was smaller, we did not get a price adjustment, and the apology was half-hearted. C'mon people, fruit flies?!
The front desk staff were nice, but not particularly knowledgeable about the area and tourist type things. When our keys stopped working, it took over 10 minutes to get help. They have a small gym that does the job and what seemed like a good restaurant attached to the lobby. I'm not sure how this hotel was ranked "The Most Romantic Hotel in Portland", but I'm sure that whomever gave it that title did not stay in a Starlight Room. I guess I won't find out because I will not return. I will be at the Heathman instead!
I was very pleased with my stay at the Kimpton Hotel Vintage Plaza in downtown Portland. I stayed there for 3 nights on business, and the hotel staff was the true definition of service. The gentleman at the front desk was very friendly when I checked in. The bell boy brought my luggage to my room, and asked if there was anything else he could help with. The woman at front desk helped me with locating Whole Foods. I had 2 business related boxes sent to the hotel, and they were delivered to my room 5 minutes within contacting the front desk, the valet boys were also very friendly and willing to help me out. There is a happy hour from 5-6, even on the weekends I was told, that made me consider coming back with friends. Another added plus - it's located blocks away from Pioneer Place, Nordstroms, the Rack, and Ross. And I adore shopping...
We were visiting from SF Last year we stayed at Hotel Monaco and had a great experience They were renovating the hotel at the Vintage and it smelled kinda toxic. thing it will be great after a fix up because it felt a little tired for the price. Very , very small room. Although my parents had a bigger room at the same priceThe one plus is they take your dogs.The Hotel Monaco does too.We would go back there if we were to choose the KImpton Group again..
We stayed here on our minimoon to oregon. It has a great location in downtown portland. They charge 30 dollars for valet, so we parked at a parking lot about a block away which saved us some money(I think it was 18 dollars for overnight). We had booked a standard room, but during checkin we mentioned our wedding celebration and scored a complimentary upgrade to a spa room. The spa room was amazing!! It had it's own balcony with a hot tub and ours felt extremely private and cozy. Also, when we came back at night to our room, they had given us a complimentary bottle of champagne to toast our new marraige with. Both the upgrade and champagne were very much appreciated. The room was nice and decently sized. They had these funny animal print bath robes that you could use, and if you wanted to purchase as I guess part of the mini bar perhaps, you could purchase leopard lingerie. that was amusing to me, but we did not purchase those items. Other than that there was also complimentary wine for a couple of hours in the evening and complimentary coffee/tea in the morning. I really enjoyed the hotel, and would definitely be back, maybe for my one year anniversary.
We stayed here for Memorial Day weekend and were pretty disappointed. We had no idea that they would be under construction, and there was dust and piled up furniture everywhere. It was not a relaxing environment. The walls are like tissue paper, and we heard our next-door neighbors very clearly at 3 in the morning every night (and they weren't partying or anything wild). The staff were nice, and quite helpful when the Riedel crystal wine glasses we had brought back from the Willamette Valley wine tastings went missing (we suspect the cleaning staff didn't realize that they were ours, and thought we had borrowed them from the restaurant or something).
This is one of the best hotels on the west coast. Try to stay here where you're in town. it's part of the Kimpton chain, so you can rack up the frequent traveler points and get goodies. The staff is phenomenal. They also have a wine reception every night.
I stayed here the weekend of 2/10 and the stay was great. There is a parking garage across the street, be prepared to pay $14 on Saturday and $7 on Sunday depending on how long you are parked. The hotel staff is friendly and helpful. The room was quiet, roomy, and clean. It had everything we needed in a room and more. The wifi was free and I clocked download speeds of roughly 256 kbps and upload speeds of 128 kbps (yes I'm a geek). They had lots of local information about Portland (even a jogging map), yoga mats on demand, and free anti-wrinkle cream. The ambiance of this hotel is really nice and it is dog friendly. This hotel is also downtown near shopping, eating establishments, and bars. I would definitely come back here again and recommend it to anyone going to Portland.
My husband and I stayed in one of the garden spa suites on our wedding night. It was a lovely room, but the hot tub had trouble staying hot. It was not as private as we would have liked either, because the hot tub on the other corner of the building was visible, and I will assume they had the same view of ours. Luckily, no one was in that room that night. It is dog friendly, and if I would have known that, the dogger would have come with us. Next time!
We were very disappointed when we stayed there in October 07. The room looked nice, but was small. The issues were due to staff. There was a wad of chewing gum stuck on the headboad of the bed! The staff were not pleasant but they promise a bottle of wine and chocolate but only the wine came (a cheap bottle). Later during the middle of the night, the people next door were having a loud party and the staff did nothing about it even after repeated calls from us at 3am. The next morning, no apologies no accomodations and more attitude. Plus very expensive parking which they could have taken off the bill if they were interested in our service. Downtown was convenient but not worth the sleepless night and poor service. You'd be better off at a motel 6!
After we returned from the hike we went and checked into the Luxury sweet at the vintage plaza hotel in downtown Portland. It's a Kimpton hotel, which is the same company that owns the Monaco, which is in a lot of other cities. It's dog friendly(my friend had 2 with us), which was really cool. and it's 2 floors connected by a spiral staircase. This place is a lot more like a house than a hotel room! The bedroom is upstairs and it has a huge living room downstaire 15 foot ceilings with floor to ceiling windows in downtown. LCD tv., wet bar, a kicking stereo system to plug my ipod into. It was just really pimp! 300 hundred skins...Your $$ does go a little further in Ptown
I was so pleased with this four-star boutique hotel I joined their online Kimpton network...weird since I don't travel domestically that much, but I had to get in on it. The late night front desk welcome was sincere and super helpful when we called ahead for directions. The Starlight room is perfect for two...the outer side is one large wall-to-wall skylight...giving you a comfy yet spacious feeling. The business center makes it easy to check emails or print boarding passes and the fitness center has full sets of weights, some nice all-purpose machine, and 2 treadmills complete with tvs and headsets. They can also provide a large list of amenities if you've forgotten anything. I easily walked just a few blocks to coffee and Nordstroms, and could've taken the free streetcar just a few stops to the hot-for-shopping Pearl district. With every new discovery in this place I was more and more thrilled. Even the late night bar-food and wine at the adjoining restaurant was good. Last but not least: pet friendly and environmentally friendly! This four-star boutique with personality tops any massive goody-two-shoes place for sure.
The only thing great about this place was the location. Not only was the front desk staff grumpy, but our room was incredibly small. There was dust on the lamp shades and alarm clock; mildew on the shower liner (I'm not making this up) and upon cleaning the room, housekeeping left behind our used drinking glasses. Not to mention, when I went to use the built in blow dryer, (too lazy to dig out my own from the suitcase) it made this horribly loud rattle as if something had died in there. Since I was a bit stressed out about all of the above, I decided to order a spa treatment. Complete rip-off. I could have had my boyfriend rub Vaseline on my back for free. Hotel Vintage Plaza is incredibly well-known for it's luxury and charm; I'm very disappointed. I think the reason for the 3-stars is because on the last night there, we had a fabulous time at the restaurant downstairs...after consuming as much wine as we did, it was nice to jump in the elevator back to the room and by that point, it didn't matter.
