57 reviews for Hotel Montgomery
This review is for the hotel bar @ the Hotel Montgomery
WOW, the food was Awesome!
- Mac n Cheese: Super cheesy (4 cheeses!) and very good
- Hot & Spicy Wings: I have not had such juicy, crispy chicken in quite a while...and to find it at a hotel bar? Amazing!
- Chorizo Pizza: I did not taste it, but my friend was enthralled with this entree
HOWEVER: The servers were kinda ditzy and their service was spotty. They forgot some orders, did not come back to check on us...and the bar was pretty empty on a Thursday nite; that was too bad.
But i'll come back for the food anytime!

We had the suite, room 420 (how ironic) anywhoo..
it was my 21st birthday and we decided to have our preparty here.
the room was spacious and the living area was seperate from the bedroom.
they had two bottles of wine and lots of snacks and goodies to buy.
i loved the outside patio. it was a nice warm day so we took our glasses of wine out there and relaxed by the little water fountains they had.
it was really nice and thE bed was super comfortable!!

There's been recent reviews, all negative, about the Montgomery Hotel- mostly complaining about the noise from the club, the drunks, and hidden costs. These reviews made me a bit nervous to stay there (i booked the reservation before reading the reviews) when in town for work.
I just returned from my trip and was very surprised and very pleased with the Hotel Montgomery.
- they no longer have the club people mentioned. The hotel was very quite - the bar even closed early and I was there on a Friday night.
- The staff were all very friendly.
- The rooms very nice and clean - steps above most average hotel rooms. The bed was super COMF!
The only negative comment I have is in regards to the parking. Now, I know the hotels downtown all charge for parking. In this case - $20 for self-park in their lot. I'm ok with that - but my problem is the same parking lot is open for event parking - $18 for 4+ hrs. Why, as a guest of the hotel am I paying more - and to top it off... they charged me $20 plus $1.95 tax!!!! There's a tax for parking?
This is my only disappointment with the Montgomery. Over all - the Montgomery is a great hotel - has a great staff, very affordable and very comfortable. Please know - NO CLUB --- NO DRUNKS.

Horrible customer service. Will not be returning to this hotel.
We stayed last weekend, Saturday the 26th for one night. The first thing I thought that was odd is the parking. They charged us $20 as a customer for overnight parking. I had to initial a form stating I wanted it. When I went to park later it was full, so they sent me to valet. Upon checkout I was charged both valet and the initial $20. Yet if I had parked as a non-customer it would have been $18 for 4+ hours. This made no sense. Shouldn't it be cheaper for customers?
My main complaint however was that they overcharged us even after I checked out and got my final bill. When I checked my online account later that day they had charged me for not only the parking (which I had thought they fixed) but a few hundreds of dollars extra. I called to speak to the manager but was informed not only that THERE WAS NO MANAGER ON DUTY, but he was OFF that day. I work for a hotel in SF and could not believe there was not ONE manager that could help me resolve this problem. The guy at the front desk (Tuesday morning) told me to write an e-mail. Seriously?? He then told me to go to my bank and take it up with them. I did. My bank called them confused as to how they were supposed to clear up a charge the hotel made. As there was no manager, the front desk agent said to wait until he got back in the next day, or of course, send an e-mail.
In my opinion the manager should have called me himself the next day or the front desk agent should have e-mailed the manager to let him know the situation so he could follow up. NO accounting department, no manager...what kind of hotel is that?
I would have felt better about being mugged in an alley than I do after staying at his place. Seriously I feel like I was robbed.
Where to start, I called the Montgomery to get a reservation and was quoted a price, only to have it up'ed $20 when I actually checked in. When I reserved the room they claimed to include parking, surprise I had to pay another $20 to park in the hotel lot. We got a jr suite, and it was tiny, like difficult to walk around in small. I would hate to see what the regular rooms were like.
Like that wasn't enough a week later I received a charge for a $50 cleaning fee. When I called to see if this was a mistake they insisted that the bathroom was so much of a mess they had to clean it for an hour, I only used that bathroom to shower, piss and brush my teeth. I had to call various times and get the run around for a few days before they even gave me that info.
The only good thing I can say about this hotel was that the décor was kind of cool, in a very unique way. Not cool enough to make it worth getting jacked $90.
The money is not as big of an issue as the principle of the whole thing is. What a shady way to run a business.

I stayed here for three nights during a conference I had at the San Jose / McEnery Convention Center. I chose this hotel because of it's close proximity to the convention center and the relative low cost per night as compared to other well rated hotels within walking distance of the Convention Center.
Overall I was happy with my stay. Here are my pros and cons.
PROS:
-My room, a 'deluxe king' room was clean and well appointed;
-Closet had hangers, two robes, an extra pillow, and;
-A small in room safe for small valuables;
-Convenient restaurant, Mosaic, on the ground floor;
-Within walking distance of many amenities including other restaurants (I ate at a Mosaic, P.F. Chang's China Bistro, and Johnny Rocket's), Pharmacy (needed some cough drops and a bottle of water), cellphone stores (I forgot my phone charger at home), and etc.;
-Very important to me- a short 7 minute average walk to the Convention Center;
-Free access to a small gym with some equipment (bike and treadmill) and a set of free weights;
-Free wireless Internet in the rooms. Though, it my be helpful for some people to know I was not able to ftp files using the hotel's wireless Internet;
-Comfortable mattress;
-Staff was very pleasant and helpful;
-I requested 3 wake-up calls which were all made to me ON TIME, by a human;
-Offers a AAA discount;
-Does the chocolate on my pillow each night count as a pro?
CONS:
-Halls on the room floors were very narrow (Didn't bother me, so much, but it was quite noticeable and I could imagine juggling large or numerous bags would be challenging);
-The two elevators (one VERY small) were very warm (My room was on the third floor and after a couple of the trips up or down the elevator, I would be sweating by the time the doors opened);
-My room, on the Southwest side of the building, faced an apartment/condo residential building (So the view was of people's living spaces - which can be, well, not that pretty);
-Continental breakfast, offered in the lobby area as you get off the elevators, was an extra cost;
-Shower in my room did not drain well so I had about 2 inches of standing water in the bottom of the tub during my showers (Note: I did not request that they fix it until I checked out of the room so I can not speak to the speed or efficiency of the 'fix-it' team).
Note: I did not rent a car, but rather hired taxis to get to and from the airport (walked everywhere else), so I did not use the hotel parking lot. I did notice, as Jeff B. mentioned, the parking was fairly expensive and the lot seams to charge a lower cost if you are NOT a hotel customer.
All in all, I had a nice stay and would stay here again.

WORST HOTEL EXPERIENCE EVER! I'm only giving them one star as zero is not an option.
We paid for a junior suite. If that was the size of the suite I'd hate to see what a regular room looks like.
Aside from sub-par accommodations, this place is hidden cost galore. The price for continental breakfast , which is complimentary at most hotels, was outrageous. The tiny little sign was hidden at the end of the table where you would only see it AFTER you've served yourself. I was quoted $149 but the room ended up being $169. When i initally called to book, they gave me the impression that parking was included in the cost only to find out that parking is an additional $20. When I got there there wasn't even parking available and street parking isn't an option in that area.
The part that pisses me off the most is the $50 they charged me for cleaning. Before we checked out we straightened up the room as much as we could- made the bed, folded up the couch, etc. With the exception of a couple of glasses and some used towels the room was basically in the same condition as when we arrived. I found out later when checking my account balance they had charged an additional $50. When I called to inquire about the charge I was transferred to the General Manager, Randy, who left me on hold for 15 minutes! I called back and was told he wasn't even on the property. I tried again the next day only to be placed on hold for a ridiculous amount of time AGAIN. Finally he answered and said he needed to look into what happened. He never did. After getting the run around I decided the $50 was not worth the amount of bullshit he was giving me. I gave up calling.

all you have to do is read the last three reviews for this hotel... in no time i expect to see their rating drop. it's sad really, because it's a relatively cool space in the somewhat barren hotel wasteland that is downtown san jose. i am not sure if the hotel is under new ownership, but the restaurant sure is and at night it turns into a freaking nightclub which results in blaring music, bass felt through the walls and screeching club goers outside of your window until 1:30 a.m. i stayed here with my mother- needless to say we had no desire to be awake until 1:30 in the morning. we also had to load the luggage cart at our car ourselves when we checked in, because there was no porter available. i am eight months pregnant and my mother, god love her is old with a bad back. that was just ridiculous and should never happen at a supposed 4 star hotel.
as for the rooms themselves, they are not really anything to write home about. the bathrooms are totally basic, and the t.v.'s are tiny and not even flat screens-the photos on the website are REALLY misleading. i would pretty much never stay here again and they should be ashamed for allowing their quasi restaurant/nightclub to keep their guests awake. stay classy san jose!

This place is ok. I came here on friday for a little getaway with the GF. They upgraded us from a deluxe king to a junior suite, Yay! The room was huge with a nice sitting area and a luxurious bed that was a pleasure to spend the night in. Much better than my little twin at home. All of the hotel staff were courteous and helpful.
I think business travelers need to beware. The hotel bar/lounge area has changed. It is no longer paragon, a chill jazz place. It is now called mosaic. Its loud and plays hip hop and tons of people. Its my kind of scene but it's a case of wrong place and time. I didn't make a reservation at hotel valencia because of Vbar and now its the same thing. Especially since people like to hang around after last call in the patio area and scream their drunken heads off. Its great if you want to party downstairs and crash upstairs later. Not so great if your night starts upstairs...

Partied at Paragon over here for NYE 2008 back when Mosaic was called Paragon. Yacked in some tree bush over here by the boccie ball pit before my homeboy followed suit and yacked in the same bush. Damn absinthe we drank while pregaming fucked up our stomachs.
Went here again a few months ago with some homies after Agenda for one of their homegirl's tellie parties. And all I have to say from that night is GOD DAMN, what's up with Filipinos from the 510 drinking nothing but Hennessy and making everyone that's not passed out continually take shots with them until they themselves either yack or pass out. I used to like Hennessy, but I hate that sheit now. Gets me trashed pretty quickly, the VS and VSOP. Privilege is pretty smooth though. But that night was pretty funny. Chilled there until 5AM and ended up making friends with everyone and having some girl pass out on the couch and try to use my lap as her pillow and homeboys hella clowned on me after saying one girl was on the jock after her boyfriend passed out. I hate how this never happens to me when I'm coherent and can actually see straight or remember what I was looking at.
But damn...510 Hennessy army dude was crazy making us take that many shots until 5AM and then he forgot where he parked and drove off later. Homeboy even dropped his pants to show us all his shrapnel wound from Iraq on his thigh. Man...I hate Hen!
Oh...and as for the suite...You got a queen sized bed, a couch, table, some chairs, a couch seat, and a bathroom, and a flat screen TV I believe. A OK, no idea what those girls paid for the room, but it's walking distance from any bar or club in downtown.

Being that I was celebrating NYE 09' at Mosaic [ http://www.yelp.com/bi... ] It was a no brainer to stay at Hotel Montgomery.
With the amount of alcohol and other recreational drugs I was going to consume. There was no way I was going to drive home and risk getting a DUI and having my mug shot posted and found on Google [ http://www.thesmokingg... ] Besides. I figured the ladies would be impressed if I had a room. I'd use my 100% fool proof pick-up artist lines. I mean come on. Who wouldn't trust a dude that calls himself MySterY and wears ski goggles indoor and has all these hunnies all over him!
Being that I haven't partied in San Jose since my SJSU days. I wasn't expecting a posh and chic hotel. But Hotel Montgomery is slowly helping pave the way for the once booming silicon valley and up and coming downtown San Jose party scene.
The Lobby is small, cozy, and very well decorated. The Check in process was smooth and the front desk were very friendly. The room [http://static.px.yelp.... ] was just the rite size and nicely furnished to handle about four people.
The Bathroom [ http://static.px.yelp.... ] isn't crazy big. What I didn't like is the Sliding door. Cus you know with a sliding wooden door..um..certain smell could linger and make it's way toward the bed. NOT a good thing!
IF I were to stay in SJ again. Hotel Montgomery would be the place to be to recover from a heavy dose of partying!

A great little find when you don't have the money for the Fairmont.
Quaint and at the same time luxurious.
Great location and nice staff.

Okay, I've stayed at a couple of the Joie de Vivre hotels now and of the two, this doesn't really live up to the full reputation of this boutique chain. The lobby can definitely use an update, after all this is a person's first impression of the hotel. Maybe they're trying to come off with retro chic or something, but it's not working, if just reminds me of those people's homes that haven't bothered redecorating since the late 60s, early 70s. And, the hairy chairs in the reception areas aren't mod, they're scary looking. I have to take off a star for the lobby.
Luckily, the actual suites are pretty nice and attractive, and the bed extremely comfortable especially after a night of drinking and dancing! Oh, and a nice feature is the couch is a hide-a-bed, which was lucky because some of our friends drank too much to drive home. The bathroom is huge with good lighting and nice bath products (it even has a scale if you're so inclined to use it, lol). And, one perk is that to upgrade from a standard to a suite is pretty inexpensive and worth the splurge. The staff is friendly and accommodating.
Would I stay here again? Probably so, if I wanted to stay downtown for some reason, but I'd be more likely to Moorpark, another Joie de Vivre hotel, if I just wanted a weekend away.

I booked the One Bedroom Suite for next year. Yay!
UPDATE: Cancelled my reservations at the hotel. =( The hotel has been bought by another hotel company and the restaurant where I was going to hold my reception has been bought by a restaurant group that manages the Piatti restaurants in Santa Clara, Carmel, etc. The new restaurant is called Mosaic. I was extremely disappointed when the banquet manager that was going to help me with my wedding did not tell me that she wasn't going to work here anymore. Took me a week to get my deposit back from new staff and a new banquet manager. Boo.

Wonderful boutique hotel!
I stayed here one night in a junior suite and I must say it is a lovely hotel.
The staff is very accommodating and helpful. The rooms are very clean, spacious and of course come stocked with many items in the mini-bar (should you choose to indulge!). The bathrooms are large, open and come well stocked with towels (thank GOD) and washcloths.
The beds are incredibly comfortable - even though 3 of us ended up crashing in the bed, I still slept fairly well. I can say had it just been me I would have slept like a dream. Great amenities like free Wi-Fi (as all hotels should provide), an iPod dock and cable on-demand.

The hotel lobby is pretty. I like the modern decor and when I lived in the South Bay a few years ago, I thought it was pretty swanky. But having stayed in a room recently, I think they were made for little people.
The room I was in was small with low ceilings and there was barely room to move around although the bed was quite large. I felt claustrophobic.

Vintage San Jose meets modern flare at the Hotel Montgomery. Located next to the ominous Fairmont Hotel, the HM boasts a square and hunky exterior. Inside, I really enjoyed the lobby area. It was large and had many art pieces and light fixtures to keep my eyes busy. The front desk staff were all friendly. My room was quaint and nicely decorated. I enjoyed the iPod alarm clock--I take my pod everywhere, so it was nice to be able to listen to music in my room. The bed was very comfy and I slept well, which is hard for me to do at times. The bathroom was large and spacious. I really enjoyed the shower / tub as it had great water pressure and plenty of hot water.
One aspect that I did not care for was the absence of a proper breakfast option. They offer a continental breakfast at ~ $15 per person. That's a bit much for grapefruit and toast in my opinion.
The HM makes a great home base for out of towners or a nice place to chill if you live in the Bay Area. I'd stay there again.

I actually REALLY like this hotel.
This was our place of love shacking for Valentine's day this year. I had no idea he even got a room so when we showed up here I was pretty excited. I would use the word "swanky" to describe this place. Its very quaint as well. The decor is really cute. I was not to fond of the chocolate room air freshener in the lobby but its OK.
The room had a lot of snacks too! That weren't ridiculously priced. After a long drunken night I stayed up by myself to order "Twilight" (i know I totally jumped ship). Ha Ha.
The room was also VERY spacious, in the suite we had right when we walked in pat made reference to "Step Brothers" the part where they finally make their bunk beds and the guy says " We can do SO MUCH activities" (followed by a little loop kick) that's what this reminded me of as well. SO much room for so many activities. This is a good spot to take a lil lady friend WINK!
Good customer service as well

I've attended the San Jose Jazz Festival for 2 years now. Last year, I stayed at the downtown Hilton. This year our traveling companions made a set of reservations for the Hotel Montgomery. If I'm not mistaken, we stayed in a junior suite. It had a king size bed, a bathroom and a nice sized closet. It was very roomy...lots of walking space between the bed and the opposite wall. There was no queen sleeper, though.
I had to change rooms twice. The first room we were assigned was on the second floor. It was a junior suite, but someone (probably many someones) obviously used the room as a personal ashtray, and it smelled really badly. We asked the front desk for a clean smelling room. The desk clerk was extremely polite about it, and sent someone up immediately to take us to another room. We were placed in what appears to be their King Deluxe room, and we were displeased that it felt very cramped and confined compared to the room we had just left.
The wife and I then had a discussion...being a frequent traveler and sampler of the best and worst in hotel accomodations, I was willing to deal with it for 2 nights. The wife felt strongly that we should get what we paid for, so I called yet again and asked to be swapped out. Surprisingly, the clerk was yet again very polite and accomodating. We were taken to another junior suite, which was both spacious and pleasant-smelling.
This particular hotel has a unique history...I believe it is the largest structure ever moved from its original foundation to another location. There's a fascinating mini-documentary about it playing in the lobby. Though we didn't sample the restaurant, it looked like a hopping place; very swank and trendy. Our travel companions told us the vodka selection is absolutely huge, and that the peach and jalapeno martini (wow) is to die for. I'll definitely be back to sample that.
All in all, a very nice stay in a cool hotel. Check it out, but be sure and reserve a junior suite.

The Mosaic is now a lounge on the weekends and in no way attracts the same party crowd it once did. The price for the rooms at Hotel Montgomery are definetly reasonable and the web site contains a price match guarantee that allows you to get an even better deal. Best part about it is that it's pretty much in the heart of downtown. I definetly recommend this Hotel.
This is a cute, clean little hotel with a very tiny little gym (fitness room with a treadmill, a stair climber and weights). It's near a movie theater, Starbucks, Johnny Rockets, lots of other options and of course the San Jose Convention Center and the ATV train... So it's very convenient. The staff is helpful and there is free Wifi. I'd definitely recommend staying here. It's nearby the Fairmont and other hotels too.

Thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Hotel Montgomery. Friendly staff, nice room, free WiFi, reasonably priced minibar and parking. There were a few weird housekeeping issues (the room was always clean but they kept leaving rags and disinfectant behind), but nothing to complain about. Paragon was a convenient place to grab a drink or bite before moving onto other things.
I would definitely stay at this hotel or another Joie de Vivre again!
We stayed here one night in the junior suite for a little "get away" and loved it! Gotta say it is not your run of the mill hotel. It has a feel of it's own. Kinda kept it's 20s charm with a "new twist". Every piece of furniture is unique. The room has all the little amenities that one might need. Even great goose down pillows with Egyptian cotton sheets, i-pod docking station etc...
Everyone we had contact with was wonderful and accommodating. Would stay there again in a heartbeat. Oh, they also had Bocce ball.... we had a great time playing that!
Like people have been posting before, "Don't forget your iPod!" Yes, it's all that ... and more. I have friends who live in San Jose (otherwise, I mean seriously, why on Earth would I go there?) and I hardly ever have to stay in a hotel. But this was Easter weekend, my buds had family over to their places, and my brother and his wife were staying at the Fairmont for some convention she was partaking in. I'd been to Paragon (the sumptuous restaurant in Hotel Montgomery's building), and I'd played in their bocce courts a few times in the past. So, naturally, I figured I'd stay there for an evening.
Hot damn! I've always loved boutique hotels. There's something about them that gets my blood pumping, whether it be the fantastical lighting to the multi-thread count sheets to the fantabulous bathrooms to the general coolness of the entire endeavour. I was not disappointed when I went into my room. iPod dock? Check. Sliding heavy-wood door for the bathroom? Check. Funky (in a good way) carpet? Check. 48 hidden Easter eggs with chocolate and (in one case) a free future weekend stay at the hotel? Well, uh, check. I didn't find one of those fuckers, though.
What I did find was helpful and very friendly desk-people. Of course, there were the bocce courts, which I used with my brother an awful lot, and the restaurant, Paragon (of which I'll write about later), which served up some mouth-watering morsels and signature vodka-infused drinks that were the most original concoctions this side of Absinthe (which I will also write up in the future, being where I'm writing this review, strangely enough). I loved the room, I loved the personnel, I loved the hotel, I loved the restaurant, and I loved the bocce courts!
Yes, I know I have friends who live here in San Jose, and they'll always be ready to let me pass out on their sofas or their tuck-away futons or their guestrooms. But there will also always be a spot in my heart completely devoted to Hotel Montgomery.
I LOVE this fucking hotel. Just about as much as I fucking love bocce. (I'll play you in a match. I DARE you to challenge me. I'll send you back home crying to your Momma Mia.)

I helped organize a three day event up in the Bay Area, and I needed a place for the attendees to stay. This Joie de Vivre boutique hotel provided our group with a great rate and amazing service.
Beyond that, I was impressed with the attention to detail by the staff and in the hotel's design. Lather products in the bathroom, gourmet chocolates on the pillow, burberry furniture in the suites, iPod docking stations in each room, bocce courts in the courtyard ... all of it was really classy.
The bed definitely ranks as one of the best beds I have slept in at a hotel - it was incredibly comfortable.
The hotel staff was very professional and friendly. One of the employees remembered small details about the nature of my visit and asked me some thoughtful questions about my trip. I was impressed by his genuine interest and definitely appreciated that.
I'm really glad I found this place for our trip and I'm definitely staying here any time I'm back in San Jose.

I've stayed here three times for friend's birthdays. Every time we have made some noise but no one every said anything to us. One time we were supposed to have a junior suite and instead came in our room and it was a single king room. The front desk agent swtich us to a huge two queen bed room and gave us breakfast for four as well as a bottle of champagne for the screw up. Recently, I tried to book a room online for a one bedroom suite and it wasn't working. The rate was for a three day minimum. The front desk agent at the hotel gave me a rate of $150 off the regular rate since I was only staying one night. It was really awesome and nice of him to do taht even though technically he should have charged me the regular rate.
They really go out of their way to accomodate and really, the rates are pretty fabulous consdering the location and room.
The rooms are modern and clean. They are very similar to the ones at Hotel Valencia at Santana Row but 40% less.
A beautiful friend was in for business and was staying here. She lost her mobile in a taxi and was stressing out and they sent a big basket of fruit and a printed card saying how they are trying all they can to track it for her. She got emotional and her voice cracked in her french accent reading the card. It is good to know that someone in a town you're not familiar with is treating you like a human being and is thoughtful enough to go an extra mile.
It's a Joie de Vivre establishment, real artsy. musicians and artists love his hotel. Not to mention they give back to great causes and community (read their website). I always, pick Joie de Vivre when I book hotels. The staff are amazing at customer service and for knowing when we like our privacy.
The beds were comfy, rooms clean and service is great. At night it was quiet with only my iphone's itunes connected to their speakers adding to our romantic ambiance. What a great time.
So, like everyone says, bring your ipod.
I'm giving one star off for charging for parking. Please change this overage.

Hotel Montgomery completes my reviews for Joie de Vivre hotels in San Jose. Compared to the Moorpark Hotel, Hotel Montgomery is clearly the winner. Any hotel with a bocce ball court is certainly impressive! The front desk guys are friendly, accommodating, and helpful; they printed out a sheet of guidelines for Bocce ball when I proclaimed that my knowledge of the rules were unclear since the last time I had played was in high school.
And luckily for me, we stayed on Easter weekend and I was ecstatic to discover that there was an Easter egg hunt in the hotel! I only found 3 on the 4th floor, but I think everyone else got to the rest of them.
My only 2 complaints for Hotel Montgomery:
1. They do not allow their very own guests FREE parking. If you want to park in the hotel parking lot, you will be charged $18 (per day), so you will have to park in 1 of the 2 free public parking lots nearby.
2. My BF is enrolled in the "joy of life" club and upon our arrival to the hotel, they didn't have complimentary cocktails waiting in our room and in the morning they did not bring him USA Today, instead the SJ Mercury Newspaper.
Besides that, everything from the beds to the gym are luxurious and posh. And if you were considering taking public transportation to the hotel, the light rail drops you right across the street from the hotel at the "El Paseo de San Antonio" station.
**four and a half stars..

I stayed at the Hotel Montgomery because of a trip for business reasons, and if I had to pay what the company paid - I probably wouldn't. It's a nice hotel and everything (great decor, friendly staff, great bed) but for the price, there were a few things that weren't that great.
Most places have a complimentary breakfast. Hotel Montgomery, on the other hand, had a scant selection and they charged a lot for a bagel and juice. The other rather obnoxious thing about them is the wireless internet. I had to stay and work one morning and I kept getting kicked off my messenger. Ugh.
The alarm clock was so difficult to figure out, so I asked the front desk to conduct a wake up call for me. The first day they did fine, and even called multiple times. They hung up after three rings, and just when I would get ready to get out of bed and walk across the room to pick up, it would stop. So I ended up staying in bed longer - but that's my own fault, haha.
On the second morning, however, I asked to be woken up at 8:00 and they called me at 8:20. Luckily I didn't have an important meeting, or I would have been PISSED.
If they upped a few of the things, it would probably be worth the price they are charging.
After reading all these prior reviews I'm thinking, "I'm sorry but did I stay at the same fucking hotel as you guys???"
I stayed here for the Paragon New Years Party for 2007/08. BTW: Do not waste your money on going to this party. If they hold it again this year. It was chaotic and unorganized.
There was nothing wow or spectacular about this hotel. I know the place is a like almost 100 years old but the place needs a face lift. Especially the front desk area 'cause that thing looked like it was falling apart. Anyhoo. When I was walking down the hall to my room the painted brick walls reminded me of some kind of hospital from a horror flick. I believe I'd gotten the Kind Deluxe room and I was disappointed at the size of the room. Basically the bed took up 2/3 of the living space.
So, I thought the front desk had told me the check out for New Years Day was at 2pm because it's well...New Years Day everyone is probably hung over. So I woke up around 10am of New Years Day and watched some tv and thought I would hit the fitness area around 11, but not before checking to see when the check out time was again. I call, they tell me 12pm, and I'm like WTF! So, I don't even take a shower and I packed up all my shit and go downstairs to check out thinking I'm gonna be late. Get there, checking out...I ask again when the check out time was they tell me 2pm 'cause it's new years. WTFFFFFFFFFF!!!?!! I was so friggin pissed. (My fault for not remembering) But freakin'-a!
+1 star for their comfy bed, other than that they can suck it.
Great find in Silicon Valley
The decor has a Burberry feel with an American twist.
Great bathrooms - large vanities and all the bath products are Aveda.

I had to plan a spur-of-the-moment trip to San Jose, where I have never stayed overnight before, and i needed something within walking distance of the Tech Museum. AAA recommended this place, and we are so glad to have gotten the opportunity to stay there, even for one night.
Some have written of small rooms, our's was so large we could have square danced in the entry. Space wise, though, the desk was crammed too close to the bed. Also, many have written about Avea products, they have changed to another brand.
The room is well appointed and very quiet. The linens are high quality, the decor is modern and sparse, very much to my taste.
I have two complaints, parking is $20, and the view from the western facing rooms is terrible. It is very much "Rear Window" in that you are looking directly into apartments. I think a south facing room would be wonderful, though.
Hotel Montgomery was recommended by a co-worker once when the Fairmont was booked solid - and just one stay converted me into a devotee. I've stayed at most of the popular business traveler hotels in downtown San Jose, and the Montgomery by far has the nicest decor, employees, and amenities.
I love that the front desk staff isn't a rotating door of faces - they are the same folks almost every time, and many of them remember me from previous stays. It gives a personal touch to each visit and is one of the reasons I'm a loyal customer.
The king size beds are ultra comfortable - totally on par with the Fairmont - and you get free internet access, Aveda amenities, and even an iPod docking station/stereo. They turn down your bed each night, put soothing ambient music on the radio, and place chocolate mints on your pillow.
Some of the basic rooms are awfully small and cramped, but here's a tip: become a Joie De Vivre (Joy Of Life) club member - which is a free service - and you can forever after get cheap $10 room upgrades.
Extra bonus points for the bocce ball courts outside and the only chic bar in the San Jose downtown area IMHO.
The one downside is that there's no pool at the Montgomery, but not to worry! You can just wander up a few blocks to San Jose State and they have a year-round outdoor lap pool (the largest in California!) that you can use - or sunbathe by - for a mere $3.

I love this hotel. It is by far, my favorite hotel in San Jose. The hotel exterior is beautiful and easily accessible by lightrail.
The interior of the room was spacious, modern, and sleek. It was great!!! I loved the bathroom, the bed, everything! I was also pleased to see that the mini bar was not excruciatingly overpriced as is the norm.
Also, Ive hotwired and pricelined many other hotels (as was the case with this one) and often times they treat you like you have the plague. This hotel did not. The staff was friendly and helpful.
I am sitting in my room at the Hotel Montgomery. We just finished dinner at Il Fornaio across the street. The Devil Wears Prada is on HBO. I am in heaven.
This boutique hotel is staffed with super nice young guys. The rooms are clean and large. They are decorated very nouveau 70's with a Burberry (copied) plaid. The colors take a bit getting used to but I did. The mini bar is stocked with all sorts of goodies including Jacqua Girls and Sharps products. A groovy stereo system and an ihome docking station. A boce court in the courtyard.
The one drawback....$20 for self parking, $23 for valet.

I love me some fancy hotel business and it was in abundance here. BF and I decided to have a mini getaway the other weekend by way of hitting up the ghetto fab roller coaster scene at Great America followed by an evening of fancy drinks & room service at a 4 star hotel in San Jose. I did my Yelp research and fell upon the Hotel Montgomery which seemed to fit the bill. And did it ever!
At around $100, we had the cutest room, complete with Burberry furniture, Egyptian cotton sheets, mini bar, iPod dock station, CD player, his & her robes, TWO SHOWERS!, as well as fancy amenities from the super lux Lather line. It seemed almost too good to be true. A hotel like this would easily cost you $200 and up in SF.
Other cool stuff!:
The Paragon bar is sweeeet. We enjoyed fancy drinks made by our super friendly bartender who was happy to rattle off the many house infused vodkas they offer while an awesome live jazz trio played in the background. The bar itself is super modern chic with several long mod couches to snuggle up on, it's a good sized space that is dark cozy and somehow still intimate and it was hard for us to pull away. But up to our room we eventually retreated and tried out their room service which also gets top marks from us. BF had the pan seared mahi with lemon roasted fingerling potatoes and a salad of sorts. He said it was delicious and cooked perfectly. I enjoyed a beet salad (which I never fail to order if available) with a side of their mac & cheese. The mac & cheese was on the creamier side vs. cheesy but was still super yummy. We finished it all off with their house made bread pudding with toffee sauce which was recommended. We were told it's the only dessert staple that stays on their ever evolving dessert menu. We got ours a la mode which I suggest. Warm chewy perfection.
All in all, for $100, how can I not give this hotel 5 stars? I highly recommend the Montgomery for anyone living in the Bay Area looking for a relaxing one night getaway... Treat yourself! As for me, I'm ready for a return visit whenever the budget permits!

Simply San Jose's premiere hotel, boutique or otherwise!
We stayed in a Montgomery Suite, a spacious apartment-like offering (sans kitchenette), fashionably outfitted in decor and amenities. The bed, like a California-king turned sideways, could easily and comfortably sleep 3 (possibly 4, snuggled up, if you were so inclined). The living room was large and seemed quite suited for entertaining guests; composed of 2 lounge chairs, a couch (fold-out sleeper), 2 glass-top end tables, the desk, the television/entertainment center (wherein there is a shelf stocked with candies, chips, teas, etc, as well as a mini fridge which I dared not open...). The bathroom was very designerly and chic. My one contention being that the shower was definitely lacking in water pressure, though it more than made up for it in near scalding heat.
The service is unquestionably first class! Unquestionably! Personal, personable, professional. I have rarely been treated so well. I suppose its a very Silicon valley possibility that even someone that looks like me (a tad thuggish, a bit unrefined) might be of some import in our crazy little high-tech financial whirlpool called the Bay Area... (...tis' too bad I'm not... ). A+ service through and through, from front desk to concierge to valet to restaurant & bar.
The location is perfect for splurging, rambunctious, wanderous nights on the town...
Highly recommended. HIGHLY!
What a great stay, cute classic feel but really nice high-end, linens, fixtures, and over all feel. The staff was very helpful, perfect location for the convention we went to, VTA just across street and walking distance from food, shopping, nightlife ect... Just a wonderful place over all!!!!
We held our rehearsal dinner at Paragon at the Hotel Montgomery and everyone had a blast. The food was great, as was the live music. Service was a little slow, but it was a Friday night and we had a party of 16, so I guess that was to be expected. Drinks were good -- but if service was faster we would have been able to have a few more!! =)
A charming boutique hotel from Joie de Vivre, the folks who created Hotel Vitale in San Francisco (among others). Great downtown location near convention center, airport, Shark Tank, restaurants, cinema, and colossal Valley Fair mall. Paragon bar/restaurant in hotel. Free high-speed Internet (not wireless) in every room and 24-hour business center with free Internet, copier, printer, fax, etc. Valet and self-park by the day.
Extremely courteous front desk staff have made my stay delightful. I will absolutely return when in San Jose.
