It takes a lot for me to give an establishment five stars but this hotel definitely deserves.

When we arrived we were greeted by a very friendly front desk person and everything was handled right away (bags, parking the car, room check-in). All of our questions were answered and we were ready for the weekend stay.

The room itself (we got a king deluxe for $139 per night) was beautiful. The view from our window was of the entire NW (GWU side) and we were only on the 6th floor (there are 10 floors I believe). It had everything we needed and if you forgot something the hotel most likely had it (tooth paste, toothbrush, etc). The bed was really comfy and enough pillows for everyone. The only negative aspect of the room was that the bathroom was a bit small...the vanity is outside of the bathroom so plenty of room there.

The hotel has coffee and tea in the mornings and wine in the evenings from 5-7PM (everything is free). They also have milk and cookies in the later evening hours (10PM I think).

Not only is this hotel clean and has very friendly staff but it is also located centrally. You are only steps away from Adams Morgan, already located in Dupont, and Georgetown is a short walk away. When I come back to DC this is def where I'm staying.

Mixed up my breakfast order, refused to give me early or late check out, and places doggy biscuits on the front desk (?).  Staff was oddly careless and unprofessional.  The bartender at Firefly had such a weak arm that my Lady Luck cocktail arrived pitifully flat, the powdered egg whites having not set due to her lack of a proper shake.  Would come back here in a pinch, but would not to.

3 1/2 stars.

When my taxi pulled up in front of the Madera, I thought, "Damn, I meant to tell the travel person I wanted to stay at the Palomar, not the Madera".  It's just that the Palomar is a little newer, bigger, hipper.  The madera is a tad bit smaller and worn, though still good in a lot of ways.  It's like having a date with the slightly less cute, less smart brother.  You don't want to pine for the other one, you just can't stop yourself.

The staff is very friendly and helpful, morning wake up calls reliable.  Though the elevator was broken when I was there, the stairs were easy to take.  I like their robes, the aveda amenities and the rooms are a good size.  But my curtains wouldn't shut all the way, making for an earlier wake-up via morning light than I would like.

All in all,  a solid place to stay.  Unless of course you meant to stay at the Palomar.

One day I will break down and buy the little leopard print sleeping shorts and tank top that taunts you from the closet. There are also leopard print robes too. I showed some restraint on this trip though and kept my thirty bucks.

The Hotel Madera is part of this whole Kimpton Hotel family that I've been introduced to in the past six months. Definitely more flavorful than a Marriott, depending on which one you hit and if there are any specials, they can be really reasonably priced, too.

It also helps that when I finally checked into my hotel at nearly 11 PM, there was a little platter of Oreos as you walk in. And milk. I started liking them already.

There's also free and speedy wi-fi, Aveda shampoo and fluffy pillows. Definitely somewhere I'd choose to rest my head again on the next trip to DC!

My friend provided me with 3 choices for a hotel in the DC area and I went with the Hotel Madera since it was the least expensive and I was only going to be spending a night in DC.  It's also part of the Kimpton family and from past experience I know the Kimpton family is one classy family so how bad could it be? The answer: not bad at all!

Great location!
Friendly staff at the front desk who didn't mind when I locked myself out of my room- seems to happen to me a lot in hotels!
Free WI-FI access!
Huge, modern looking room!
Comfortable bed!
The downstairs lounge serves apples in the afternoon, wine in the early evening, and oreo cookies later at night!

The Kimpton Family wins again!

Checking out this morning. Overall, a nice stay. Great location, friendly staff, Deluxe room larger than I expected. Our room, however, is starting to look a little tired. Wooden furniture is pretty scratched up, a leg on the bedside bench is broken and there's some ceiling damage. For what I paid through Travelocity, it was fine. But had I paid full price, I would have probably spoken to the manager about the slightly shabby accomodations. Lots of pluses to this place, but it's time for a refresh. Will most likely stay somewhere else our next trip.

Dinky bathroom.  Sound system too complicated.

Friendly staff.  Good wines by the glass in the bar.  Good location.

Massage therapist they sent over put a kink in my neck.

So, some good, some bad.  Probably won't go back.

My husband had to come to DC on business and we chose the Madera because  I wanted to be near Dupont Circle and the Kimpton Hotels looked cute online. Also, I read my fellow yelpers reviews and thought we'd try it because , well, the company is paying.
We got in hours later than we expected to,it was raining and we, of course, could not figure out the damned circles in D.C.. So we called the hotel for directions(they were very patient because we were tired and not a little cranky) and when we arrived, the atmosphere, as well as the front desk, were mellow and uber helpful. We valet parked(extra $) and headed upstairs. The hotel is small,(um, boutique)(cute tho),  but the room turned out to be really nice. The hot shower(awesome massage shower head),and Aveda products(rosemary, nice) helped ease the grumpies. They are eco friendly (very cool) so u have to request fresh towels or more shampoos or a linen change but every time you call the front desk they are eager to provide friendly service.I will partake of wine hour and cookie time later tonight and update when my stay is over but as of this morning, I would definitely stay here again.
Update: I hated to leave. From the beginning everyone knew my name(Norm!),for our anniversary they left us candy and peregrino in our room while we were at dinner with a signed card by all the staff that helped us,including valet. Really nice touch.
And the robes are SO comfy and leopardy...I want one(whine).
Oh well,     sigh,     maybe next time.

Rooms are surprisingly large and pretty quiet. Same Kimpton line of boutique hotels that are all over major cities, including Boston (Hotel Onyx), Dallas, and New York. The location is great..in the middle of Dupont Circle, near Georgetown. Staff are always very cordial AND they have complimentary wine in the evenings!

We mainly picked this hotel on the recommendation of a relative and also based on it's location.   I have to say we were quite happy with the room, the staff and the service.   We requested a quiet room and that's exactly what we got.   Hotel is based on an older building, but they have done a fine job of updating it and keeping it modern.   The free Internet access is also a total bonus.
If you are planning a stay in the DC area, Hotel Madera is a very good choice if you want to get away from the tourist areas.   The Metro is only about a 5 minute walk and it takes you anywhere you want to go.   I enjoyed the Dupont Circle area because it's a typical urban setting without being too tourist.   Locals might not believe it, but the Metro is very well run and a bargain.
Special thanks goes to this hotel for being dog friendly.   They even have a water dish outside the main doors for our four legged friends.
One of my favorite things was the cookies in the cookie jar to greet us as we returned from our day's adventure.   That's a nice touch.
Good job.
