We go to Hermosa a lot, every weekend-sometimes we just stay at a hotel- usually stay at the Beach House which is awesome, mistakenly booked Hermosa Hotel on accident (my bad!) but tried to make the best out of it when we checked in--seemed ok-a lot of older(50-70) folks seem to prefer this hotel. It's about a 20 minute walk to the beach area. First thing that seemed odd is, my boyfriend and I had to sign a "No party" agreement. This is our welcome. We go up to the room (this place is really dated-green carpet) and it seemed ok for what you pay for($129). Boyfriend jumps in the shower....afterward we want to open the sliding door for some fresh air...will not open, we are smart people, seems simple to do..try and try and try-it's broken for sure---call desk. All the hotel staff have left (it's 4 on a Saturday-isn't that the biggest hotel busy time there is?), there is nothing they can do. At this point claustrophobia has a way of setting in, what if there is a fire? I want air..etc...anyhoo-went to the front desk, if we want to change rooms, we have to pay for another room-since we used the shower. What>?! It's a fire hazard and, really it's just not cool that you can't open the sliding door. Sorry, too bad, we will charge your credit card- By the end of it, we checked out and will never, ever refer this to anybody- or stay here on one of our many weekend visits to Hermosa. All they had to do was a take a look at the broken door, given us another one of their dated ole' rooms with green carpet and saved our weekend -instead, we drove back to Pasadena in a very bad mood. This will pasted in to tripadvisor too.
I live in Santa Monica, my parents in Pennsylvania. They flew out here for a week to visit- without knowing too much about the LA area, I recommended this hotel as it was pretty close to the beach. We had a fantastic stay (yes, I stayed with my parents while they were here)! If you're looking for a fancy-upidy hotel, this is not for you. It is a typical hotel with excellent service. The front desk recommeded some great dining places around the area. Most rooms have a beautiful view of the ocean and hermosa/manhattan piers. Yes, it is a little loud due to traffic- but it is LA. The prices were extremely cheap. My parents will be out again next May and booked the same room for their return. Give it a try!
I have nothing pleasant to say about this hotel. The overall experience was the worst I've ever had at any hotel I've ever stayed at. Being located on the corner of a very busy intersection, one would think that the management would invest in double-paned windows to cut out the endless noise that takes place at all hours of the day and night. But of course not. Our reservations were made weeks ago for two quiet rooms, yet when we checked in, we were told that our rooms were all they had left. The hallway outside of our rooms reeked of vomit and the carpet inside the room was sticky to the touch - both adding to our already unpleasant stay. The desk staff was not very nice and seemed to be bent out of shape whenever any question was asked. For health reasons I cannot have caffeine and was surprised to find that they didn't have one bag of either herbal or decaf tea on hand. In addition to the above mentioned problems, the computer was down for printing out boarding passes, but luckily there is a Kinko's across the street which saved the day. I cannot recommend this hotel at all and will never stay at this place ever again.
