FELT LIKE I WAS IN PURE LUXURY!

We went for our honeymoon in 2006 after finding a good deal on their website - got a night free booking online. We wanted to feel luxurious and that's what we got!

DO NOT DRIVE THERE AT NIGHT - we did and I got mega car sick. By the time we got off the Hana Highway and to the resort I was seeing double and had to be carried from the car to a golf cart to the room!

The place is so peaceful and beautiful. We felt like we we're the only ones there at times - and that was so great. We got a cottage with a hot tub that had views of the ocean - it was so wonderful and relaxing. The restaurants on the property were top notch and every night of dining was new and different. We often took advantage of the kitchen's box lunch special. We would order a boxed lunch the day before and pick it up in the morning so we'd have food for an all day getaway to the beach or a exploration around the island.

The spa is also wonderful. We got massages and it was so perfect!

Lastly, the Friday night luau was cool and not tacky and we appreciated that. When we were there they did have some famous guests but the place was so chill even the celebrities could relax! We loved it and hope to return!

Lovely grounds.

Horrible food quality at the hotel restaurant.

This was the worst food we ate in all of Maui (imagine that...given this was the nicest place we stayed).

What a wonderful place to stay.

You can't really say that being in Maui is stressful, but if you really want to escape to somewhere peaceful, put this place on your list.

On arrival, you're greeted with a kukui lei, a cold towel, and a cold glass of juice.  You're then taken by golf cart on a tour of the property and then to your "room."

Upon entering your room, you'll notice how spacious it is, then you'll find there's a welcome note and chilled fruit and other snacks waiting for you.  The fridge is fully stocked and its all complementary.  If you're hungry, the restaurant has fresh ono (delicious) food, or you're just a short walk away from the grocery store.

The landscape is beautiful; its like you're walking through a botanical garden.  You can enjoy it on your stroll to the restaurant, pool, fitness center, or the infinity pool that looks onto the ocean.  (We got a little confused by the layout, but who's really in a hurry to be somewhere?)  For evening activities the Paniolo Lounge is open until 10 for cocktails, with live entertainment on some nights.

I would love to go back and stay there again... to even stay in one of the cottages... And the whole thing about no AC, no TV, and no alarm clocks? You won't need them... Enjoy your escape to Hana.

My husband and I always stay at Hotel Hana Maui when in Hana. No mystery there, they're the only game in town when it comes to a high end hotel in the East Side.

I recommend their Oceanfront Cottages, the ones with the jaccuzzi on the lanai. All day, you can hear the surf break. Rockin'!

You can also dispense with the whole valet thing since you can just drive up to your cottage when coming in from the beach or fresh from your loco moco scouting trip. (across the street).

Anyhoo, not bad. Not great, but not bad.

I had a great New Year's Eve at Hotel Hana with the cheaper $15 option (incl 2 drinks, live music, party favors, etc.). The other option was $90 for a buffet and the rest.

Fabulous music by One Vibe, and really great decor and ambiance. At midnight, the fireworks are across the street at the Ranch. If you love Hana as much as I do and like a chill NYE, I'd recommend HHM. Even if you can't afford a minimum of $500/night (myself included), stop in just for drinks, dinner, and an eclectic set of staff and guests.

I only ate here, but it's clear this is a cool place to be!

I stayed nearby in an even more remote area, but this seems like a very great resort to go and get off the beaten path in Hawaii...  I got a massage from one of the guys who does massages at the Hotel Hana, it was pretty great too..

The restaurant is probably one of the only *good* places to eat within miles and miles ("people don't go to Hana to eat" says the Maui Revealed guidebook...).   Food-wise I had a cheeseburger and fries, but it was probably the best cheeseburger and fries I had in Maui (actually, the only probably...).  The service was good as well...  The outdoor setting is nice.  Prices were reasonable.

Walking into this resort was nice because though it was luxurioius, it wasn't exaggerated to feel like Disneyworld like some of the resorts on the "other" side of the island.

If you're on the road to Hana, this is a great place to stop and eat before heading back..if you're hungry.

I stayed here for one night. Thank GOD it was only one night. We did the drive to Hana and everyone said we should stay over and not do the drive both ways in the same day - they also said THIS was THE place to stay. I believe its THE place to stay becuase there isn't anything else IN HANA.

The service was amazing. I loved the staff and that they stocked our fridge and gave us goodies and it was all complimentary. The cottage was lovely and spacious - loved the huge bathromo. Why the 2 star review then?

This place doesn't have AC. Who the hell doesn't have AIR CONDITIONING in this day and age? Sure there is a nice sea breeze and you can leave the sliders and windows open, but there is also a can recelying redemption center in walking distance with a bunch of bums at it. Maybe some people like leaving their doors open and hoping that bums don't join them or rob them, but I like the security of having a closed and locked door.

Also - the pool and hot tub are nice, but there is no beach on property.

the only five star/luxury hotel in town - your choices as to where to stay in Hana are somewhat limited (hint:  rent a house).  our hosts had membership at the Hana Ranch club which gives pool and beach club privileges.   the pool and jacuzzi overlook the pacific and are usually empty or frequented by older guests who quietly humor you and your friend's swim racing and synchronized swimming escapades -

the service was quietly polite and discrete though somewhat limited (one day we had no towels by the pool and no drink service at the pool?)?  but Hana, as a town, is beyond reproach and I can't imagine a more romantic place to spend a honeymoon (for older couples you might want to rent a car and explore the area ;)

the day spa is beautiful and during the off season, uncrowded.

the day to day dinner menu is amazing, with almost everything from Hana itself, however the Friday night buffet and luau was surprisingly nice and not hokey or touristy at all. very authentic, many of the performers both dancing and in the band are not only family but have been doing this for many MANY years.

the bar makes a few decent drinks but for the $15 price tag, you're better off with a beer or their amazing lemonade. The burger however, at $17, is worth every penny. If you have some time to kill before the dining room opens at 6, the view is great from the deck or from inside the large doors and the service is impeccable.

My wife and I went to Maui for our honeymoon. We spent three nights in Kaanapali, and then two nights here. I wish we'd had one or two more nights here. Everything was just relaxing.

We stayed in a sea ranch cottage with a large lanai and a hot tub on the lanai. We spent both afternoons just sitting on the lanai and relaxing.

No AC, television, or internet in your room. But it was absolutely fine - every window opens and the porch doors give about a 10 foot opening (with a post in the center)

The staff all rides around on golf carts - golf carts for room service, golf carts for dropping you and your bags off at the room, golf carts for the cleaning staff. We saw the staff on the carts and saying hi to each other and legitimately enjoying each other. The staff is just so flipping happy here.

We didn't go to the beach (Hamoa) where they have amenities, but we tried their pool and their poolside bar. Both were very nice, and the drinks were about the same price as at the Westin we stayed at in Ka'anapali. So even though it's a luxury hotel, the prices on drinks and food are pretty reasonable.

Anyway, I love this hotel. It was a complete splurge, but I can't think of any place I'd rather hide out for three or four days when life is crazy.

Now that the road to Hana has been repaved it isn't the buckboard 4-hour snails pace trip I remembered from last century. Travel time is now just over 2 hours and the drive is spectacular! In fact, the road has now become a test road for many major car magazines. Sweeping turns, ocean vistas, rainbows, waterfalls and majestic bamboo always make for great glossy scenic images. Last time I went, I rented a Subaru Impreza and had a blast.

I also make sure I always have a great meal at Beverly Gannon's (Haliimaile General Store) place either before, or after, the two hour drive in or out. Best meal I had the whole trip. Not to be missed!

Hana like Hilo hasn't (and never will) become tourist Meccas. Natural beauty and Kamaaina spirit is what makes this part of the island feel special. Black sand beach and seven pools hikes are always photoworthy for tourists. Hana has no artifical props, just relaxed nature.

I've stayed here twice and still laugh at the weather stone out front. Hotel Hana Maui (HHM) seems to have revolving management, although  service hasn't seemed to waver too much through the changes. The grounds are well kept and the spa is worth a massage or two. If you can still get the Watsu, that is a special experience. The steam room and cold plunge areas are also my personal favorites. Also, getting a Sea Ranch Cottage is what makes the experience worthwhile for me.

Food at HHM is traditional american big breakfast and maybe a decent burger for lunch, but dinner is pretty much just average. You don't come to Hana for the food. If they could lure a notable chef here, that could make HHM a destination, but for the most part this is a burger, salad and sandwich town.  I normally load up at Costco with a couple of decent meals, snacks and a six-pack on the way to Hana, if I plan to stay longer than a day or two.

The beauty of HHM is the grounds. The pool, weight center, tennis courts, spa and main entry/dining area (with art gallery and library) are ALL separated by the magnificent landscape. Which means walking around in a botanical paradise all day long. ;^}

The downside here is you have to board a bus to go to the resort's (Hamoa) beach, but it is a good sheltered beach with nice sand. The northeastern exposure makes this beach best in the morning and early afternoon.

It's not cheap to stay here, think $400 a night. But if you can afford it, the experience is definitely one you won't soon forget.

Biking and hiking are good day time leisure activities, but the "golf" is not worth bringing your clubs, if you really play. No TV, AC or other modern distractions, although they do have web access near the main lobby.  They have boardgames and plenty of books, but the idea here is romantic isolation...

I recently stayed here again, this was my 4th stay in over probably 15 years so I know the place and its history quite well.  Years ago I stayed here when it was family owned and it was absolutely 5 star, probably one of my favorite places to stay on the planet.  It has for the last several years been owned by a group out of SF that owns the Post Ranch Inn, a resort in Fiji, and is building the resort on the Marin side of the Golden Gate Bridge.   They have done a good job managing it and maintaining its unique laid back style.  Recently hired a new manager (John) who seemed very nice. The old manager went on to run new time shares in Kapalua (they suck).   Also reportedly had some recent problems with the food service so they hired back there old chief back.  Well enough of the history, here are my comments on how the place sits currently.
Service:  Always excellent and friendly-5stars.

Rooms:  Have only stayed at the "Sea Cottages"  not in the main hotel.  They are in need of updating, no doubt about it.  Our deck needed a fresh paint job.  However, nothing was horrific.  No AC, you don't need it. No TV, you don't want it.  No alarm clock, who cares.  If this isn't  what  you want don't stay here.  I always get the hot tub on the deck but that is a personally choice, you can save some cash by not requesting a spa cottage.  Most are very private, typically you can go nude on the decks particularly on the ones close to the ocean with no problems.  I give the rooms 4.0 stars.

Food:  I have read many complaints about the food service here recently however I found it to be good to very good.  You have to be smart here, this is a relatively secluded location and most of the food is local.  Ask about what the local catch is and what fresh fruits and  vegetables they recently received.  Remember this is East Maui, only about 2k people live out there so supplies are limited and transported in for the most part.  Breakfast was included with my room.  I give food 4 stars.

Spa:  Relatively new spa (I'll say 4 years old), great steam and cold plunge in locker rooms.  No saloon services such as manicures or pedicures available now.  Beautiful setting with pools and outdoor spa as well.  Didn't get spa treatment this last trip. I give it 4 stars.

Setting/Location:  This is east Maui, I give it 10 stars.  I can't say enough nice about this area.  Went for the East Maui Taro festival which is held just off the hotels grounds on this last trip.  It is a must see but that is another review. Plan your trip around it, usually in April. Hotel has it own semi-private beach area just down the road that is very nice.  Red Sand beach literally 200 yards off main property (see reviews of  "Red Sand Beach").  National park with waterfalls and swimming ponds ("Seven Sacred Pools") just  9 miles up the road. Read Sara B's review, she is pretty much right on.  I am not religious as well but this is "God's country"!  The drive out to Hana this spring was nothing less than spectacular.

Overall this is still a very wonderful hotel that does need some updating and it is very expensive.  But really not a lot of options in east Maui so they do have you.  I understand the hotel is up for sale again, I can only hope that whoever buys it doesn't screw it up.

This place is amazing!  The food..the staff...I still keep in touch with one of the sweet girls who works there.  We are going again in March.
Make sure to get the room with a jacuzzi on your balcony overlooking the ocean..A truly amazing time!

Ate lunch here and it was good. The staff was ok - the lady who seated us had a huge attitude but our waiter was nice. The food was good too. Nothing to write home about but it was fresh - my fiance had the mahi mahi sandwich and it was very tender. My cuban pulled pork sandwich had about 3 bits of pork and mostly ham in it which was sad as it was called a pork sandwich with ham and not a ham sandwich with pork ;) The views were nice and it is the only nice restaurant in Hana except for local type food grills on the side of the road. Not bad considering how far Hana is from the world and how hard it must be for them to get supplies!

While well traveled I don't often get to stay in "small luxury hotels of the world" but when we went to Maui for our honeymoon in July 06, we were lucky enough to fly free (love those SkyMiles) and someone was kind enough to give us a stay in their condo as a gift, so it was suggested we treat ourselves to one night at the Hotel Hana Maui. I called once we arrived in Maui to make a reservation for one night and was told room rates started at $425. I said I would take that room. We set out on our journey, on the Road to Hana, and were truly amazed by the beauty. Not a religious person, this is God's country. No one else has the ability to even imagine such beauty, let alone create it.  Upon our arrival at the hotel we were immediately greeted by the friendliest staff on any business anywhere. At the front desk we were met by a man holding a tray of pog juice, orchard leis and cool washcloths (it's a dusty ride at times). They asked why we were visiting and we said our honeymoon. The front desk receptionist immediately upgraded our room and called someone to have them deliver a bottle of champagne to our room. We returned to our car, where all of our belongings had been neatly stacked onto the back of a golf cart for us and all the windows/doors of the rented Jeep had been reattached for us (it tends to rain on this side of the island). Our awaited chariot took us on a tour of the grounds and amenities -  a three-hole pitch and putt, croquet, spa, gym, tennis, two pools and as we approached our room we kept getting closer and closer to the ocean. They have these amazing sea cottages that I had actually read about before I had ever planned on going to Hawaii and we were now amongst those cottages. He pulled up to the cottage closest to the ocean and said "I don't know what you said in there but keep it up. I have never seen anyone get this kind of upgrade before." We walked into the cottage which has two balconies - one facing the ocean and a private balcony off the bathroom which includes a walk-in closet, a huge jet tub and a shower I have only dreamed of. No curved shower rod needed here! The cottage itself is larger than some people's apartments in large metropolitan cities. Also well stocked w/ Maui coffee beans and a grinder, chocolate covered macadamia nuts and the most moist banana bread I've ever tasted. And of course our champagne,  which ironically it turned out to be the same champagne we served at our wedding reception.
We both looked at each other and without speaking had the same exact thought (maybe this whole marriage thing really was meant to be!) We called the front desk and immediately booked a second night. We were in a room 3 x the rate we were paying - it would be like throwing money into the ocean which lay a mere 20 feet in front of us, to not stay, right? We were not disappointed. We scheduled spa appointments, played "golf", croquet, rode bicycles around town, frolicked in the infinity pool (it looks as though it doesn't have edges and the water just flows into the surrounding grass w/out interruption and when in the pool you can't see what lies between the pool and the ocean), relaxed in the hot tub and sauna, took advantage of their private white sand beach and still didn't partake in all they had to offer. Hula lessons, horseback riding, Ukulele lessons - it was like summer camp for grown-up. Well a very upscale summer camp.
Obviously people who are used to this kind of treatment may not be as amazed as we were but our two nights at the Hotel Hana Maui really made our honeymoon. We are already planning our 10th anniversary (how long it will take to save to stay at one of those cottages for more than two nights and spend lots of time in the spa). Their website uses an abundance of superlatives like legendary, luxurious, unspoiled natural beauty, dramatic ocean view .. and none of it is over-stated. In fact, they might just be selling themselves short. The Road to Hana is an amazing journey in itself but if you have the means and opportunity, stay at this former cattle ranch, which truly does "makes available to everyone the full grace of old Hawaii" offering a "serene and enchanting escape".
