One of the Business' Favorite Reviews What's This?
Like everyone else has said: cheap and free parking, really clean, with incredibly cheerful and bright decor. Whenever I plan to stay over night in the city, I try to stay here since literally I just want a place to crash after a long night out (without driving across the Bridge back to Marin). This place doesn't feel as cheap as it is, it's no Hilton or W Hotel, but it's sweet, cute, and in a central Marina location.
Fun hotel with great value considering the location.
I've lodged here on two trips (around 8 days total) and thoroughly enjoyed each visit.
They've really hit the mark with their bright, cheerful decor throughout the motel. I never experienced noise issues as other reviewers mentioned, however it's understandable as the Marina area in general can be a bit loud at late hours.
The desk staff is always very welcoming and accommodating.
Be sure to check out their complementary DVD library!
This is our second time staying here in the past four months. Very comfortable and great location. Kid and pet friendly, has pool that is kept moderately warm. Very bright and cheerful colors throughout, nice artwork in the rooms. Front desk is very helpful. Breakfast is simple but adequate. Internet service is wireless and was a bit spotty -- sometimes it worked great, other times not. Parking is free and on-site. Would definitely keep coming back to this place.
Awhile ago I booked my Dad to stay here for a week's visit, but after one night he asked that I find another place for lodging. In his words he said it was not clean (and the way he said that made me suspect something nasty) and that there were holes in the sheets.
I don't know if this was an uncommon occurrence, some unusually bad housekeeping or not, but I felt it was key to post as I would have wanted to know about the circumstances to consider and check things out more thoroughly before making the reservation.
Great place to stay, especially if your looking to be away from any of the usual touristy drama. They have good free parking both within the motor lodge and adjacent lot which belongs to the hotel. My standard room was clean with a very small bathroom.
The light continental breakfast was good enough to kick start the morning. Plenty of places within walking distance if your looking to grub.
Staff at check-in/out was very friendly.
If you can enjoy the fact that it is an old remodeled motor lodge you will enjoy staying here for a long weekend.
Definitely a good option if you can get a special rate or just considering the free convenient parking.
Wireless high-speed Internet access is available.
I use to live next door to The Hotel Del Sol, so when I was in town for a few days, it made since to stay here. As others have said, they do offer free parking, which is pretty unheard of in SF. But beware, I can't tell you how many cars got broken into in the two years I lived here! Don't leave anything visible in the car!
The rooms are pretty bright and the noise factor can be off the chart, but this is a great location. Clean neighborhood and tons of shops, restaurants, and bars within walking distance. The bed could have been a bit better, but this is a value motel, not a five star hotel.
The place is "Kitschy -Cute". Brightly colored exterior, cool looking palm trees in courtyard along with pool and hammocks. That's where the charm ends. This place is a dump. we put out of town guest here for the week since it was close to our home.
Walls are paper thin. the place is old, floors were spongy, yes spongy it was like walking on a trampoline. The place is in need of major renovation. Joie d Vivre group who owns this place should be ashamed of themselves. All they did was slap paint on this 50's motel and they charge 60% more than other newer motor inns in the neighborhood.
If you want to stay in the Marina District, there are more than a dozen nicer places on Lombard street to choose from and most of them have parking as well.
My mom, sisters, and I stayed here on a quick trip to the city to look at wedding dresses. The room was cheap, particularly considering that my mom could park her ridiculous car for free (she drives one of those embarrassingly large SUVs that makes no sense considering she's a life-long green party member).
Anyway, the rooms are on the small side, but comfortable and clean. Apparently it was noisy at night, but I didn't notice, perhaps in part to having consumed a good part of the complementary (half) bottle of wine they gave us on arrival.
I'm writing this from the Sol... Cute, clean, fun. Not a four star hotel, but they get four stars from me!
For the money, if you're looking for a place to lay your head in the Maring district, the Hotel Del Sol is the spot!
I came for the cheap stay and free parking, but did you know they also serve continental breakfast. Got a free upgrade to the Junior Suite, so hubby and I can say, we had a good stay, even though we were on the third floor, the exercise is good for you. The shower water pressure was perfect. And this place is close to pizza organsmica!
Service was pleasant, and rooms were immaculate. Overall great value.
Down side: The motel doesnt have the SF feel, it's a nice motel. And the Marina district is a party district so you can sometimes hear the drunken parties walking by.
But overall - Great Value for Great price!
Noisy as hell- Don't get a room near a stairwell! Stay in one of the interior rooms. Decorated nice, comfortable, good location. Parking was never a problem. Not a four star glamor hotel, but for the price and location I think it's a good stay.
When I decided to fly into SF a day before my firm would actually pay for hotel costs, I asked my local friend for a hotel under/around $200 near the marina. I had heard that running along the marina area was nice and was in my half marathon training. Anyways, the hotel did not disappoint. It's a cute motel-like place perfect for families (or folks like me looking for value). The rooms were bright and cheerful and the staff was helpful. This is a place my family would've stayed in when I was young..... really good value. The walls are really thin but it didn't bother me, afterall I did expect loud families :-) Stayed here July 13th.
in my book its a five star not sure on the actual rating but it was well worth the money and at a value price i would tell anyone to stay here i will come back to this location next time i visit san fran for sure!
Joie de Vivre, like Kimpton, is responsible for converting some of the city's seedier hotels into upscale yet low-priced properties, and this family-oriented, Crayola-colored non-smoking Cow Hollow motel is a prime example of their handiwork. More South Beach than San Francisco, it boasts a vibrant exterior and a heated courtyard pool, complete with toys for tots of all ages. Each of the fifty-seven bright, cheerful, and spacious guestrooms features WiFi, a two-line phone with dataport and voicemail, cable TV, VCR, CD-clock radio, in-room safe, and iron with ironing board. There are ten one-bedroom suites, three with kitchenettes and two with fireplaces. A family suite includes a room with bunk beds, board games, toys, and child-sized furnishings, and free beach balls and sunglasses for the little ones. A light continental breakfast is served poolside each morning, and there's ample parking on-site. Definitely not for corporate types or anyone who hates kids. Rack rates start at $129, with discounts available for AAA and AARP members.
Cheap and free parking! Easy to walk to Union St. and down to Chestnut in the Marina. I stayed here for about 4 nights on my recon mission to SF before I moved here. The rooms are hip (no bathtub but those are usually gross in hotels anyway). An ex-con friend of mine said that he used to hide out at the motel that was here before it was converted to the Hotel del Sol and I thought that was pretty cool!
This is a cute, festive motel and a fantastic deal. (I've usually paid $105 to $115 per night.) Parking is free, and the rooms are clean and bright. Only negative is that kids playing the pool can sometimes wake you up early in the morning. Ok, 8am is early for me but maybe not a problem for you.
Free parking, free parking, free parking. Ok, I guess it's not really THAT free since I'm sure it's included in the price, which isn't that cheap. I put some friends up here and they seemed ok with it -- no frills, just a hotel room. Lots of bright colors. If you like the morning snacks, they have some danishes in the lobby.
Cheap & clean what more do you want for a relative or friend without ton of money. Good neighborhood & just remoldeled nicely. Worth the money.
