Recently, my Partner and I stayed at the newly renovated (and newly 'Renaissanced') Marriott Hotel 57, a gorgeous boutique hotel in the Midtown East a.k.a. Sutton Place district of Manhattan. After reading a few reviews warning against the hotel, we were a bit concerned, but decided as most of the concerns focused on stays during the renovation process that we could chance it as the renovations had been completed several weeks prior to the beginning of our stay.

We're thrilled we took the chance as our five-night stay at the Hotel 57 was extremely pleasant, luxurious, and more than memorable. From the Lacava fixtures in the sumptuous bathroom (we stayed in one of the Sky Loft suites complete with a huge private terrace) right down to the Breville Die-Cast Smart Toaster (http://nifty.cjw1.me/N) featured in the concierge lounge on the main gallery level, this hotel has seen to every detail to make its guests feel pampered and special.

The staff of the hotel expertly seemed genuinely friendly, was utterly attentive, and completely professional. Our suite was sumptuous albeit fairly compact, and it should be known this is completely in keeping the boutique hotel style - if you're used to your hotel rooms being the same size as your suburban McMansion bedroom, you won't understand or appreciate the boutique style and should perhaps stay elsewhere. As it stands, we live in a two-story loft in the metropolitan downtown of a world-class U.S. city, and are well-used to compact city life.

The suite afforded us to amazing views of the surrounding buildings and starting / ending each day of our stay relaxing on the private terrace was nothing short of sublime. The bedding was, as expected of a hotel of this caliber, top quality and completely comfortable. The bathroom was quite luxurious and beautifully appointed, featuring double sinks and plenty of space; the fantastic steam-shower in particular was a welcome treat.

The renovations of the hotel have more than paid off and the modern organic esthetic of the Hotel 57's new look oozes charm, sophistication, and whispers posh just loudly enough to be heard (as opposed to shouting it in a brash and flashy way); new photos taken during the hotel's recent Marriott Renaissance Branding Party have replaced the artist's concept drawings previously on the site and are well worth a look.

We dined at the Opia restaurant, starting with appetizers and cocktails on the hotel-side in what  serves as the concierge lounge by weekday, and were very impressed with the quality and deliciousness of the food we ordered - our stay in Manhattan focused on eating in some of the best restaurants the city has to offer, and we felt Opia easily kept pace with those places. I encourage you to seriously consider staying in the Hotel 57 and am confident you won't regret it.

I would actually go 3.5 on this one because really my expectations weren't crazy high and therefore I was pleasantly surprised :)

HOTEL: Location, Location, Location! And honestly, this was my main reason for staying here. Yes, I was shooting for a nice place, but I needed to be within walking/short cab rides to a few places and this fit the bill. And it really is a great location, you can walk to a ton of things, plenty of shopping out the front door, good restaurants within a block, Sbux next door, nail salon also next door... subway not far either.

DECOR: It is what it is. I personally appreciate anything above the typical basic hotel standards, so I enjoyed it! It has the feel of a hidden lounge in a dark back alley somewhere, that is maybe trying a little too hard. The lounge is tiny, yes. But I was there from Wednesday til Sunday and it was never too crowded for me. And it is the only part of the hotel with free wireless (maybe I'll take back that 1/2 star after all) so I spent a bit of time in there every day.

ROOMS: Small they are, but I think saying they're "tiny" is a bit dramatic. I had a double and there were two of us in the room majority of the time and space wise it was just fine. The reason it feels smaller than it is would be due to the crazy amount of wood built ins throughout the entire room -- half of which is actually unusable. From a design standpoint, that is just bad design because it shrinks the space. Beds were comfortable enough for me, pillows galore (I am a pillow person) bedding was clean and soft, woohoo! Bathroom is quite nice, however a little more space for.. you know.. a girl would be appreciated. My flat and curling irons really had no place to go because even with the little room next to the sink they were in danger of getting soaked as the sink is a bit more pretty than logical.. it splashes over quite a bit.

SERVICE: This really was hit and miss. I had requested early check in, but was already prepared to not get into my room until at least 2pm. HA! I arrived around 11:00 AM and I said to the guy at the front desk "I'm sure my room isn't ready but..." He cut me off and said "Yes it is, right this way!" I replied "Say whaa?" So this could be why my review may be a touch bias, but I mean c'mon, that was an awesome surprise! Then the next afternoon I realized I had left my "Do Not Enter" sign on the door all day, so I called down to ask if house keeping could swing by and just do the trash really. They said not a problem and I went on my mosey way to 5th Avenue to window gawk. Well, when I returned at least 2 hours later my room hadn't been touched. I should explain that I am really not that hard core about having my room cleaned every night I'm at a hotel, if it's nothing major I'd actually rather not so I don't think about someone being in my room (paranoid? me? never!) but if I call and request it be done and it's not, well that irritates me. By then it was after 8 PM and I was over it. The next night we called down for a wine opener and that got delivered right away. Also, it was raining on and off and they had nice, big umbrellas at the front desk for guests to borrow, nice touch, as I surely did not have one in my over packed suitcase. Over all, staff was great. I will say, as a female, the female staff seemed to have a bit of an attitude, none were particularly friendly, especially the concierge. The guys were complete opposite. But it really didn't effect my stay.

BAR: All I have to say is my sister and I sat down for dinner, and we got one of the rudest servers I have ever come across. She had attitude for days, literally threw one menu at the two of us as she walked by for the fourth time in fifteen minutes without saying a word. We asked for the manager to get us a different server and to perhaps look into sending her home for the evening as she clearly did not want to be there. He didn't quite take us up on that one, but he did get us a different server who was pleasant and it was fine. The food = eh. My drink was nice and strong though!

EXTRAS: The gym! No matter what, I always take advantage of a hotel gym while I'm staying there because.. why not! It is small, but just right for me as I don't need much on the equipment side. Top of the line treadmills and ellipticals, flat screens for each, and a bowl of fruit and water at your service. Oh, and there's also a mini fridge with nice cold towels for you too, which was a cute touch and surprisingly nice on the back of the neck after a run!

So over all, I totally recommend this hotel if you get a room at a fair price. Unless you plan on living in your hotel room while you're in New York City it will be just fine :)

The hotel is centrally located and has a very small lobby - I am not sure how they would accommodate a full-house with this lobby, and  considering it was just renovated, it's not going to get better anytime soon.  That said, when we arrived, it wasn't busy and we were greeted by the friendliest, most polite hotel staff members I have encountered in a long time from the doorman and valet, all the way to the front desk agent who was AWESOME.  All but one employee (that I will discuss below) that we encountered at this hotel was trained to perfection, and provided excellent service.

Yes, there is massive construction going on at this hotel, on various floors including the second level where the restaurant is.  But we were on the 11th floor, I believe, and none of it affected us, except on the way in or out.  In the room, none of it was audible.  It did, however, slow down the elevators quite a bit.  Minor inconvenience, I'd say.

The room was spectacular.
I believe the cost was somewhere in the high 200's with a corporate code, but it was expansive - and came w/ a balcony looking over NYC.  Or, more accurately, on the 11th floor, NYC is basically looking over you, but hey - there's a balcony!  The bathroom is small compared to the room but you basically have the closet the size of a walk-in on each wall down a hallway.  The television is a standard flat screen LCD.  The entire room was obviously one of the renovated rooms.

It's central to most everything and that particular block can't be beat.  There's Starbucks almost right next door, and lots of other shops and restaurants - - you basically never have to leave the block if, for whatever reason, you wanted to just hang out at this hotel.

The restaurant is very nice with several outdoor tiny patios on which you can sit and dine/drink.  Like I said, there's massive construction going on - it looks like they are extending it.  Something funny did happen, though.  All of us, after dinner, came back to the hotel opting to drink in our hotel room - and we walked to the restaurant first to order a bottle of wine.  A bottle of Jordan Cabernet, to be exact.  Well, not only did it take a long time for it to arrive, but they brought a bottle of "J" Pinot Noir.

The following conversation ensued (after we sent it back w/ the waiter, and the manager came up to the room):

Us: "You brought a bottle of J - not Jordan."
Mgr: "Oh yes, this is J - for Jordan."
Us: "... no...."
Mgr: "Yes... that's what the J stands for."
Us: "Uh... well we've been to Jordan winery and we've been to J winery and believe you me - - they are not the same.  Not to even mention - Cabernet and Pinot Noir - - not the same."
Mgr: "Well, if you insist... but this is all we have.  Besides, we were closed, and were doing you a favor by even bringing this bottle of wine to your room."

(This is the short version.)

OK - -- one star docked.
First off - unless you're a sommelier, don't insist that J is for Jordan.  We may know more than you.
And if you're a sommelier and you think J is for Jordan - you would be king on Sesame Street but you really suck at your job.
Third - when the customer tells you that this is not what they wanted - - politely apologize and just change the bottle.

He did end up going down and calling us to let us know that they do not have anything called "Jordan" in stock.  So - sticking to the theme of "J" - we ordered Joseph Phelps, which they brought, which was good.

Hotel 57 - now owned by Marriott - for all other purposes other than having wine in your room, is terrific.

The only thing and i mean the single only thing this place even remotely has going for it is their location. The room service was horrible, slow, and expensive. This is basically a junky old hotel with a very evident facelift thats 90% done. 2 of the 3 elevators did not work all weekend. They put us in the wrong room and argued that we booked it wrong and we needed to show proof. Luckily 48 hours later we did just that. The clowns then finally moved us into our proper room and still did not rectify the situation.

Save your money and stay @ the palace around the corner or anywhere but here.

After staying at the hotel I was going to give the hotel an ok review. However we always had great service from the hotel, extra towels, extra items on the bed and in the room and everyone was very nice. The only item that was of a complaint was being alerted at 4am with a fire alarm that was an accident.

However my wife left her purse in the room and the staff at Hotel 57, sent us an email saying that the purse was left in the room. Thinking that my $200 and her cell phone was still there, We thought we would not get this back. Goes to find out that everything was recovered and we did not loose anything. They even FedEx the box back to us overnight at no charge.

Although the place needs some updates to the hotel, I would stay here again for the excellent customer service.

I stayed here for one night. It is a nice swanky hotel. It is conveniently located by the 6 train and has nice views. When I got there the room was not ready so I had to wait about 45 mins. The guy at the front desk (Gilbert) hooked me up with a late check out for making me wait. I got my rate from Travelzoo also.

Only downer was there was gum on the side of the bed that I only saw while checking out. They are still renovating so beware.

We were put up here on a visit to NYC. I guess hotels in NYC are just generally expensive. Can't believe that this place cost close to $300 a night. Cute boutique hotel. We stayed here and had a view of the lovely building on the other side of 57th. Pretty good location, close to all the stores etc.

I was able to pick up a great rate through Travelzoo for Hotel 57. They're going through some major construction, and rebranding the hotel into a Marriott establishment. To celebrate the transformation (and inconvenience), Travelzoo had a promotional rate of $99/night, which is a steal for Midtown Manhattan! Similar hotels go for double the price. And normal $99/night rate hotels in NYC would make you cringe.

Hotel 57 is a boutique hotel. The double room is small but expected of New York hotels. Everything was clean and the rooms were properly made. Bed was comfortable, bathroom was great, and the large LG lcd hdtv with HD signals was a nice touch. They also had an ipod dock for your music needs if you're really inclined to listen to music in your room.

The construction, however, is a tad bit of an annoyance. The elevators are extremely slow. During our stay, they were still working on the stairs from the ground level to the lobby (lobby is on the 1st floor) so everyone had to take the elevator to the 1st floor, then another elevator to their rooms. The process of getting in and out of the hotel took awhile, but granted that the hotel is under construction, it was to be expected.

Otherwise, room noise on the 11th floor wasn't too bad. You're living in the city after all so honking and trash collecting bangs are likely. Service was not bad like others have said. I found it alright, albeit a bit disinterested, but good enough for me. No problems with checking in or out, and the front desk was able to address my questions.

For the rate and location, Hotel 57 was awesome. It is 2 blocks from the 4,5,6 lines and four blocks from the E and V lines. You can get anywhere you want to from these stations, otherwise, you can just walk and sight-see. There's lots of shopping nearby.

This hotel is definitely a bargain for $100 a night. The lobby to the hotel was actually very nice and the the hotel is located pretty close to the subway. The room is a little tiny for my taste and the bed is a little hard but overall the room is very nice. I have mix feeling about the staff at this hotel because the staff in lobby that was there when I first check in was very nice and polite but the staff later  that night was a complete jerk to say the least.   I wasn't happy with housekeeping the moment that I was there. Housekeeping forgot to refill everything back into my room before i check in. Then they knock on my door at 8:00 in the morning to see if they could clean the room. Are u kidding me? I just went to sleep around 3am . To make matter worst they came back every 45 mins. I was so fed up that I took a shower and check out.

What a disappointment also!!!

We had so much go wrong. The manager gave us a night free and a free breakfast at Opia. We took the free night, but heck with the rude staff at Opia.

The rooms were nice and big. Alot of work is going on at the hotel. It is loud and messy.

I will not return

Hotel 57 is a study in contrasts...

The high-thread count sheets...and the lack of a table stand or night light.

The deep jacuzzi tub...and the single-ply toilet paper that even the National Park Service wouldn't consider using.

A bathroom bigger than my kitchen at home...and a shower head that dribbles out water and doesn't adjust.

I used to stay at the W near Times Square for business trips. This place had a similar modern feel, but lacks in quality. Definitely a three star. And NOT cheap - $350/night?!?

Staff was very friendly and helpful.

We only got to stay here for one night (on the company), before we moved to a friend's apartment for our 2nd night.

SUPER comfy beds, and very nice accommodations. The only kind of crappy thing was the ancient quality of the elevators - will they stop? Or plummet to the bottom floor? Who knows!

Anyway - it seemed to be decently located - coffee houses all around, not far from the Park, and a short-ish walk to the Empire State Building, Times Square, Rockefeller Center, and the NBC Studios (I desperately wanted to go up to the Rainbow Room - but my companion wasn't feelin it - next time!).

I wouldn't pass on staying here again - but I'll probably look for something else if I ever get to NY again, just because I think staying in different places is the way to go. :)

Stayed here a few months ago when the BFF and I visited NY for our first time.  It was an average hotel.  They weren't joking about the "boutique" part.  Overall, I enjoyed my stay because Hotel 57 did provide a clean and comfortable room.  The decor and ambiance was simple yet chic and mod.  I definitely appreciated the bell boys that were on the ground floor.  Sam was very helpful and gave us awesome traveling tips!

My only complaint is the bellboy who recommended a mall in Jersey for "great" shopping.  I felt like it was equivalent to Milpitas' Great Mall.  Not even mediocre shopping in my book.

Poor man in Gucci.
Its a boutique look with a low rent staff. Good rates, suck it up folks, for these prices you don't get a big room.  Kinda feels like staying in a rich man's hotel that was repo'ed by the bank. Room are attractive, quiet. Good location.

What a disappointment!

I stayed at Hotel 57 in June, 2008 for 4 nights during my short trip to NYC.  I picked Hotel 57 over W based on the pictures they posted and I also would like to try newer boutique hotels.

Problems:

Very impersonal service which surprised me as it advertised itself as a hip boutique hotel.

1.  The staff did NOT change the shampoo, soap or conditioner during my 4 days stay.

2.  The concierge, when asked for a decent local bagel joint, told me to walk around the block and found what looked good to me.

3.  The door man, when asked to get me a taxi to Time Square, shook his shoulder and walked off.

Other than the location, I have nothing to recommend about this hotel and I strongly recommend looking into Hotel W on 50th for similar price.

New York used to be a city with grand hotels.  You had the Waldorf and The Plaza..big hotels with big foyers and big rooms...Ian Schrager of Studio 54 fame changed that with smaller foyers, hip lounges and small rooms in hotels like the Paramount and Hudson

Hotel 57 fits the latter.  It has a second floor lobby and hip lounge.  The room is small, but bigger than most of its niche counterparts.  You really have to love the location, which is close to the park and seems to be central to everything

Decent place

I used to live here when it was the Allerton House for Women.  My residency was part of a stint at AMDA.  I went back in 2002 when it was then the Habitat Hotel & open to both sexes.  They REALLY jazzed it up cuz before, it was a hellhole.  It literally was the bane of my existence for several cold wintry months.

I'm glad to see it's undergone a renovation, but when looking through when I was there last, I'm surprised to see that they're still renting out the rooms without private bathrooms.

Beware the 11th floor.  A really nasty woman died there during my tenure & I wouldn't be surprised if she was still floating around the halls, sneering at the young women.

If I have ever received worse service at a hotel, the memory has been completely obliterated by my experience at Hotel 57. Rumor has it that Marriott is taking over and I suggest they fire the whole staff before putting their name on the door.

We arrived to a torn-apart entrance with plywood walls cluing us in to the fact that H57 was clearly undergoing a large renovation. No biggie, unless construction noise wakes us up, but it would have been lovely to be warned in advance. We were greeted by the bell staff who gave us a claim check for our bags, directed us to the second floor lobby to check-in, and informed us that our bags would be delivered to our room. Check-in went smoothly, but that was the end of our good experiences.

We waited 30 minutes for our bags to be delivered before my boyfriend went down to get them. Turns out the front desk girl went down to chat with the bell boys but never gave them our claim ticket. Awesome. Then we went looking for an ice machine. No ice machines. So we try to call the front desk for ice, but the phone is broken. I called from my cell, let them know about the phone, requested some ice and the guy on the phone says "Yeah yeah yeah we'll send someone up." Click. Okaaaay. 20 minutes goes by with no ice. Boyfriend goes down to the desk and they tell him it'll be right up. TWENTY MINUTES LATER the ice finally arrives. Seriously? Ice takes 40 minutes? The bar is RIGHT THERE by the front desk. Blashasjhd. No apologies, just shoved the ice bucket at me and took off. No word on the broken phone either, which wasn't a huge deal, but a testament to the hotel's lack of concern and customer service. Just cause it wasn't a big deal to me doesn't mean it's not a big deal to someone else, ya know?

So we go out and about and end up back at the hotel pretty intoxicated at 4 AM. BF gets the spins if the light and TV aren't on, so we attempt to check out the what lovely late night programming NYC has in store for us. And what? Big surprise, the TV doesn't work. We didn't even bother calling about that. Why waste the cell minutes?

Sure enough, the construction woke me up at about 9:30. Whatever. Late checkouts are apparently a no-no. They charge you a half-day's rate for any checkout time between 12 and 3 PM. I've NEVER encountered a hotel that won't give an extra few minutes. We went to check out and when asked if everything was ok with our stay, I responded "Well, there were a few problems..." and the front desk clerk says "Oh." Not "I'm sorry," not "What can we do to make it better." Last time I checked, these were pretty standard responses in the customer service industry when a customer informs you of their sub-par experience. We checked out and were informed that we had a room service charge of $25! Wait, what? We weren't even awake when you were serving breakfast, the meal you claimed we ordered. We also never received the supposed charge slip that detailed this order. Ugh. We were told that the charge would be removed but the jury's still out on that.

All in all, we got the impression that the staff really didn't care that we were there or that our experience was a good one. There was no attempt to fix problems or even apologize for problems occurring. Customer service is such a simple thing to provide that it really irks me when businesses make to attempt to make their customers happy.

Mandatory one star is for the gorgeous design and cleanliness of the room and the super-comfy bed.

Not a bad hotel, all things considered, but definitely not a place for the claustrophobic.  Very hip and definitely one of the newer class of 'boutique' hotels, Hotel 57 is kind of like the W Hotel, but on a smaller scale.  You are greeted by attendants who open the front door for you, and the upstairs lobby is clean and minimalist.  Rooms are cozy but not cramped and all the fittings are high quality.  I really liked the bathroom, which was completely trimmed in marble and very nice.

To be honest, I was only actually sleeping in the room for about 3.5 hours since I spent most of the night out drinking with friends before leaving at 7am for a flight, but it was good nonetheless.  The only gripe would be that, at $350 a night, it was effectively $100 per hour.  I probably could have gotten a hooker and saved myself money too!

A $75 a night youth hostel?  My small room sans bathroom was clean and utilitarian and ideally located for a Manhattan apartment search.
The foyer makes you feel like your staying in a trendy NY hotel at bargain prices - except for some out of towners or first week new yorkers $525 a week is a bit steep.

This was an odd place - an upscale hostel or downscale hotel (no bathroom in room).  It fit me just fine for a thre day stay but any longer than that I would have grabbed a cheaper hostel.

I crashed here with a number of other coworkers for a week on a project in NYC and having stayed in a variety of other hotels in Manhattan and Queens, I was pleasantly surprised at the hotel experience here!

Some of the older reviews may have been prior to the massive renovations at the hotel, I'm guessing.  The lobby has a very open, industrial, converted-warehouse kind of feel to it.  The check-in counter staff were pleasant and greeted us quickly upon our arrival, then processed us efficiently.

Our rates were a pretty good deal at $179 a night, due to the fact that there was still construction going on, although the only thing that would have given it away was the number of workers utilizing the elevators to lug huge rolls of carpet to wherever they were going.

The rooms.  All I have to say is "wow."  While not overly huge, the room size was pretty comparable to the rest of the hotels that I've stayed at in NYC on a government contract budget.  Enough room to walk around the bed on two sides, a little nook to use as a desk... but the styling made the experience entirely worthwhile.  A large European-styled bed greeted me upon opening the door, and the room lighting is provided by the ambient back-lighting of the bed.  Yes, the bed.  Each room is equipped with a large-screen flat panel TV.  The bathroom that I had was reasonably-sized, with granite tile floors and a very chic contemporary sink basin set above a stone counter.

Unfortunately, the view out my window overlooked 56th and Lex, and while on one hand it's somewhat amusing to be able to look across the street and see all of the folks working out at the multi-story gym, it's just a little too Peeping Tom for my tastes.  My co-worker who stayed in a different room on the 13th floor had a spectacular view of the Chrysler building that would have been pretty hard to beat.

If you can afford the W, it would probably be a more mind-blowing hotel experience.  For a place that's done up very well, pleasing to the interior decorating senses, and a great place to crash after a long day at work or out on the town at a reasonable price, Hotel 57 fits the bill.
