Their Hiyashi Ramen remains one of my favorite dishes of all time (so far) ~ a cold, al dente ramen noodle salad with boiled spinach, slices of sweetened scrambled eggs, bamboo shoots, pork, and fake crab meat. Served with a slightly tangy dressing, it's a refreshing dish for a summery day.

I've tried this at other Japanese restaurants and they don't stack up ~ Note to Self: Do not order this dish elsewhere, why bother?

This is the sister restaurant to Ebisu (they have the same menu and are owned by the same family) but the food was better at Ebisu.

Although not bad, the presentation of our meals was lacking. It all tasted ok, but I was expecting better. My chicken had lots of fat on it, which was disappointing. My soda, which I kindly asked to be changed, continually came up flat and unsweetened.

Their prices are reasonable and the service was fair, but the food wasn't memorable or very flavorful. Although my table had food that could've been boxed and taken home for left overs was left behind because it just wasn't worth reheating.

Out of all the food, it seemed that the person who ordered udon enjoyed their meal the most.

I came here bc it seemed like the perfect place to go on a blistery cold evening and I was looking forward a steaming hot bowl of ramen.

Turned out that was the lest impressive thing of the night.  Started off with a Dragon Roll, which was quite delicious. Generous toppings of nigiri and warm rice, I quite enjoyed this is an appetizer.

Then came the miso ramen served in a large bowl. The broth was off-puttingly sweet and the pork pieces were not the melt-in-your-mouth kind that you often see at other ramen shops where the broth has been cooking for days and infused with the the pork juices.

Pretty good value, though, and good options with donburi or combination plates. But in terms of great ramen, I'd head over a few blocks to Izakaya Sozai for their version.

I use to come here quite a bit years ago... a few weeks ago I decided to stop by for lunch before a visit to the Academy of Sciences. My wife had curry udon and i had the cha shuu ramen. We also had an order of chicken karaage. The noodles were decent but not out of this world... what was disappointing was the soups... the tonkatsu broth tasted watered down and bland while the curry soup did not taste like curry... I remember this place not being great but definitely good enough to go again... not anymore.

Okay if you really need a noodle/Japanese fix but not really worth my time much.

Great udon and ramen. A lot more food for your money compared to ramen dojo and others. They have different broths, you can ask for udon in the ramen section too.

Love how they have sushi also. Great to share with noodle soups.

Waiter is nice and I like the decor. It's a bit dark but sitting by windows are better.

Had the Kim Chi Ramen... horrible...  broth is key in any decent ramen... soy sauce and water just don't cut it.

Sushi here is small and thin; to the point that they look malnourished.  If there was a POW camp for sushi, this place would it.  They first starve their sushi before serving it to you.

    Failed in both categories IMO.
Will not come back here again.
So many better Sushi places around.

A big disappointment in terms of Japanese restaurant houses.

I dropped by here for lunch the other day having not tried this particular location. From the outside it looks like an authentic "classicly" cultured spot for sushi dining and lounging.

The food was bland. The combination meals/bento box I ordered with Gyoza (which is this Jap. fried dumplings) & California rolls was nothing more than a single plate with everything mashed together with generic vegetables and taste quality. The sushi tasted like it was bought from a local groceries. And I appreciated the tea but no water served first?

I could have gone to a buffet and enjoyed more food but this place has a nice setting/theme to it, therefore 2 stars.

I'm not sure why restaurants under the same ownership, serving the same cuisine are called sister restaurants instead of brother restaurants or cousin restaurants, etc.  Whatever the reasoning may be, Hotei is the sister restaurant to Ebisu.  At first glance, however, Hotei could be thought of as the prettier sister as the culturally influenced exterior seems a little more appealing than the bottom floor of the box shaped building Ebisu is located at.  Ebisu is the much prettier sister on the inside though and it's what's on the inside that counts, right?  ;o)

Hotei gets some of the overflow business from the perpetually crowded Ebisu.  Friendly service and food came out quite quickly.  Food, sushi and rolls weren't quite as good as Ebisu however.

    Hotei! Haaaaay!

Their food is definitely worth four stars but it's the service that gets them five stars from the hubby and me.

I always get the donburi chicken teriyaki, possibly the ika fry calamari.
Hubby always heartily gobbles down the HUGE miso ramen bowl.
Free refills on soda, what what! Just because of that I drank like three glasses
of coke one time just because they kept offering refills :3

The young guy server is always the nicest every time we go there.

They do serve pretty big bowls of noodles here just like I recall when I last came which was several years ago.  Being near the area one day last week due to field work, I took the opportunity to come here for lunch.  As usual I ordered the miso ramen.

The portion was big, but I guess the trade-off is that the soup tasted a bit watered down as a result.  Also the pork pieces it came with were rather overcooked compared to my previous experiences with Japanese ramen.

I guess now the one plus here is that, since the ownership here is the same as for Ebisu across the street, you can order sushi here also.  I don't know if serving sushi here has done anything to decrease the wait crowd that normally exist during dinnertime across the street.  I'll likely check out the sushi here sometime and see how it compares to what I recall at Ebisu.

Is it ever sunny in the Sunset? Is it called the Sunset because the sun NEVER seems to rise here? It's always cold here.

Nothing like a nice hot bowl of ramen to conquer the cold. Add some chili sauce and pepper and you're good to go.

Of all the ramen places I've been to, this one is probably in the top 3. I'm not too keen on the ramen houses in Japantown due to the crowding on the weekends. The ramen houses in Union Square are packed full of tourists...aka tourist restaurants, so if you're looking for a good low key place that has good quick service and good ramen noodles accompanied by good broth, it this place up!

We love this spot.  We do more cooking than eating out, but this is our go to neighborhood restaurant when we do eat out.

Things are delicious and mostly very fresh.  Occasionally the seaweed salad, my girlfriend's fav' is a bit wilted and old but its still really tasty.

We both love the soups with Soba noodles, we had all of em over the last seven years or so and they can, occasionally, be really salty, but they are pretty much all delicious.

The sushi menu is nearly identical to Steve and his wonderful wife's (who's name I confess escapes me at the moment)  other place Ebisu right across the street.  Ebisu does have some specials and rolls that you can't get at Hotei but more than half the menu is sushi menu at Ebisu is available at Hotei across the street with no waiting in line.

The front of house staff is kind and wonderful.

In our opinion nothing beats Sensei Soba or, for her, a tempura soba on foggy cold night in the Inner Sunset.

Great place for sushi... not so great for cooked fish.  I am slowly becoming a sushi fan, thankfully my sushi-fan friend is taking me through the steps of acquiring the taste for sushi.
I had a Boston roll and it was very good.  The fish was  very fresh.  I also had the bento box with grilled salmon and it was pretty plain.  I would stick to the raw, fresh fish more so that the cooked dishes.

The waitress is was very friend and very patient.  She answered all of the questions I had and made some suggestions.
The location is pretty small and there are a lot of tables.  We went in during a slow time but I can imagine it getting pretty crowded during busy times.  Parking, of course it hard to find in SF. Street parking is your best option.

The gusty wind from the ocean was blowing down the street. Only those of you who venture to the Sunset know what that feels like. Bone cold. People and dogs were pulling up their collars to ward off the chill today.

Stat: A hot lunch was desperately needed to warm up.

In the 94122, that means a bee-line to Hotei. The Ankake Ramen I ordered had shitake mushroom slices, onions, cabbage and plump chunks of pork in a plush brown broth.  There was a lot of food for the money for me. In a never ending quest to find perfection, the quality of noodles make or break a bowl of noodles and Hotei's bowl was G-R-E-A-T. They were springy, tender (sounds better than some dates you might go on, huh?)

Some neighbors were eating a special sushi roll which looked fresh and tasty. Others ordered tempura with noodles. This restaurant serves it all.

Hotei feels like a family business which is plus. The Japanese decor was very soothing and the service (with prompt tea refills) was excellent. If visiting Golden Gate Park or on the way anywhere Sunset-way, I'd stop for some eats at Hotei in a heartbeat.

All things being equal, this place is built to complete.  I say this because of it's relative success, considering that it's in the heart of the inner sunset.  Any Asian restaurant in the sunset that succeeds and succeeds well, in my mind, is doing something right.  Hotei is not exception to that rule.

Ambiance:  It's simple enough.  The interior is small and simple, with some tables along the window and sides being flanked by smaller individual tables in the middle of the dining area.  The decor is also simple, but not in a tacky way -- it doesn't reek of an overt attempt to appear as more than it is, nor does it lack any of the intrinsic charm that comes along with a ramen restaurant.

Service:  Very friendly and very helpful.  You can see partially into the kitchen from wherever you sit.  The same goes for the host/hostess station near the entrance.  They have a sign-in sheet, so when you arrive don't forget to sign up.  On a Thursday, Friday or Saturday night there can be lines out the door.  All that being said, the team here is efficient.  They take your drink and dinner order as quickly as possible; they also try to get your food to you quickly, but I've never felt rushed.

Food:  Very good!  The ramen can be either Soy- or Miso- based.  I've tried both on several occassions, and they're both good.  They also serve a good amount of other things, including gyoza and the like on the appetizer menu, as well as your standard restaurant selection of drinks (also including Sapparo and similar beers).

So to recap, I've never been disappointed here.  I've never even focused on something to be disappointed about until now.  I suppose the one drawback is the sometimes lengthy wait upon arriving.  Also, it's probably impossible to fit a group in here larger than 5 or 6 without creating significant headache for yourself and for them.  Go with a couple friends and prepare to be stuffed!

As far as their sushi rolls go, this place is okay, but not the best that I've had. I ordered miso (which was pretty good), a Boston roll and a 49er. Loved the Boston roll, but thought it lacked something in flavor and the 49er roll was too heavy on the lemon flavor. I've had rolls similar to this one in the past without the lemon overpowering the fish, but this time it just seemed to be the main flavor in the roll... my friend ordered a Louisiana Hot Link, Tootsie, which he absolutely loved. Also, I was slightly uncomfortable in their seating as their tables are too close to each other... something to think about when going there, especially if you're tall.

Why did 309 people recommend getting the ramen?
I know I should be an explorer and try things without outside factors and not just do things because majority of people say to (even though this is a good idea 90% of the time since your experience can have more potential to be awesome).

The ramen is terrible. For some reason, I thought they would have a specialty broth that they were brewing all day or maybe the pork was special. What was I even thinking? Nope, the ramen isn't any better than what you can make at home or a bowl you can get at a cheap Japanese restaurant on the corner of Common St. and Bland Ave. The soup tasted like flavor packets and the pork tasted like paper. The noodles tasted like a quick 2 minute water boil.

I would not come back here because of this experience. The other stuff might be good, but damn, I really got disappointed by this disgrace of a bowl of ramen that 300+ people said was good. 300 nubs.

Lastly, the servers don't seem like they give a damn about anything and would do anything to not work there.

A cute little spot. I came to Hotei with 2 dining partners (one being fellow yelper Bryan H.) and I liked. What I thought was just a ramen joint ended up having full Rising Sun offerings. Walking in, there was a little wait, and we had the 2x2 waiting area to stand in with all other parties. Not the business.

But as soon as we were sat, we were greeted and our waters came in a timely manner. Our table ordered 2 bowls of ramen and 1 of udon. I got the udon. It was oddly simple. Broth, seaweed and tempura with noodles. I don't know what the CORRECT way to serve the soup is, but I'm used to having a little more going on in there. But whatevs, it was fine and it was good enough to finish it all.

I liked it, and I'd come back. I'm interested in their rolls. Anyone wanna join?

Hotei is a good restaurant. Decent prices with lots of choices. They serve sushi rolls from Ebisu, ramen, combos, and soba. I got the catepillar and Dexter rolls today and eh, they were forgettable, but they were very fresh which I liked! I also had ramen which was good up until the point I found a long piece of HAIR in my noodles. After that I was like shit! Totally lost my appetite. I told the waitress and she was sincerely sorry and took the ramen off my bill. I appreciate the gesture, but it gives me chills. I will probably return, but definitely staying away from the ramen. Scarred for life!

I finally came back to Hotei to try their ramen..... I ordered the Tonkotsu ramen. Unfortunately, it wasn't that great. My friend, who also ordered it, felt the same way. Nothing special, nothing memorable, nothing to rave about...

I am a firm believer of getting what you pay for. Many of my reviews are based off of this principle.

My friend and I were actually planning to go to ebisu but it was closed so we wandered across the street into hotei. We each ordered a ramen, she ordered miso ramen and I ordered tonkotsu. We also shared a Romeo and Juliet roll.

Ramen: ($8) The portion size was fairly big but it wasn't that good. The broth was fairly good but the noodles were too soft and the pork was way overdone, too chewy. I had to pull it apart between my teeth and chopsticks...good thing this wasn't a date!

Romeo and Juliet roll ($13): the roll was actually very good, with scallop and salmon and avocado. But the roll was TINY sized, like the roll was almost exactly the size of a roll of quarters, in length and diameter.

Overall it was $18 pp after tips for an average meal that didn't exactly fill me up.

We always come here for ramen and it is almost like my comfort food! I have to warn you, it gets pretty hot in here and parking is a pain! You can park in the lot right next to the restaurant but it will cost $10. If you are lucky you might get street parking but really don't count on it.

On to the food. The ramens are good and the broths are never too salty. The only ramen I tried and did not like was the kimchi ramen. What was I thinking? Getting a Korean dish in a Japanese restaurant? It was pretty blend and, well just kimchi and some noodles.

We have also had pretty much all of their rolls and sashimi and they are decent. Obviously not the best cut of fish and the rolls are quite small, but nonetheless decent. I wouldn't come here for anything but ramen.

    What I recommend:

    Any ramen
    ebisu combo

For a party of five at around 7:45 on a friday night, we only waited for about fifteen minutes. Wasn't bad at all. The parking on the other hand is a different story completely.

The ramen is huge and you aren't paying an arm and leg for it. Then again, size is relative but it is for sure larger than ALL other places in San Francisco that I've tried. I had the chashu miso ramen. The chashu was not very good and rather thin. The broth and the noodles were superb and I was more than satisfied. I recommend it. The ramen's price ranged from like 8-10 dollars. I didn't bother trying anything else on the menu but when I was waiting for my food I did see the shrimp and tamago ramen on the specials board across the restaurant. That sounds delicious. Next time...

Don't get this place confused from Ebisu next door, like I did! Haha

Hotei and Ebisu are actually owned by the same owner. Ebisu more for sushi, Hotei for ramen/noodles. We were craving ramen and went here.

ATMOSPHERE: small, but nicely decorated Japanese style. We came on a Wednesday night that had no wait.

SERVICE: pretty good, he was able to recommend dishes based on if we liked more meat and vegetables, and also gave his own opinion saying he didn't like miso so much and that it was kind of bland.  And he was right! I love honest servers rather than the ones that try to sell you the most expensive dish.

FOOD: Just like the server recommended, Ankake ramen for meat preference [http://s3-media1.px.ye... was good and Miso ramen was kind of bland; I had to spices and soy sauce to the miso ramen.  I ordered it anyway because Miso ramen is my favorite, but have definitely had it better elsewhere (Santouka in SJ!) Ankake had a thick broth with ground beef, mushrooms, and veggies - tasty.

PORTIONS: HUGE!! There were 3 of us girls, we ordered 2 bowls of ramen, and we couldn't even finish it -__- Okay, we may be weak sauce, but you try and finish one yourself and try calling me weak sauce again!!

PRICE: very reasonable for ramen.  For huge bowls that would pretty much feed 2.5 people, they were each only about $8 or $9.  The sushi was kind of pricey though, average $13/roll.

OVERALL: Because ramen is my favorite food, I'm basing it off taste alone, and I would give it only 3 stars because well, I've had better. (Sorry Hotei!) If you're in the area and have time to wait, Katana-Ya downtown is pretty good. Haven't tried other ramen places in SF but if I do, I'll update it on my Ramen List! :) Now have tried 7 ramen restaurants in the Bay. Let's continue this Ramen Hunt!

STEP UP YOUR FLAVORIN' GAME, HOTEI!

    Agedashidofu :
(Say that three times) Now that's a tongue twister! You get 3 big chucks of tofo (I'm not retyping the whole word..) and well, it was decent. Kinda bland and a tad too much ginger.. I had better.

    Oyako-Don :
The best way to describe their Oyako-don (chicken katsu + egg) is that it equals out to being a bodybuilder's dream meal. There was a ton of diced up whole meat chicken breast and chopped up fish cake, all scrambled with an egg and piled on top of (A LOT) of white rice. [Granted, a bodybuilder would prefer brown rice but that's not the point.] To sum it up, IT HAD NO TASTE, WHATSOEVER. Even by adding soy sauce + hot sauce, it was disappointingly bland.. I concluded with just eating all the chicken..

    Ankake Ramen :
To redeem themselves, their ramen is actually pretty good. The soup base had flavor, it was loaded with veggies, they've added the boiled egg, and the noodles were good. Moreover, it was a HUGE. Comon, this ain't no Pho Garden challenge!

So I'm assuming that their specialty is ramen because that was the highlight of our meal. I didn't get a chance to try out any rolls (they're pricey!) so maybe next time. I wasn't too disappointed in the Oyako-don too because I was heading to the gym right after -- making it an ideal meal, however, your not like me so I don't recommend ordering it (at all). Furthermore, I am infatuated with their house Green Tea that they serve. I believe I had about 5 cups of it throughout the meal and it was very refreshing (on such a foggy SF afternoon).

was craving katsu at 4pm but muracci's was closed so ended up hotei.
pork katsu was crispy, perfect.  just wish there was two pieces or a bigger single piece.  but what makes up for the smaller pork portion was the huge curry portion.  lots of chunky beef, carrots and potato.  lots of dark gravy.  lots of rice.

not as good as oyaji's lunch special or muracci's but an upstanding 3rd place for katsu curry.

Pretty decent Japanese food/sushi/noodles.  I believe this is the sister restaurant of Ebisu (right accross the street).  I ALWAYS get the hamachi kama (grilled hamachi collar) and have it with my sushi deluxe (a variety of nigiri and maki).  Always fresh and delicious.  Prices are a tad cheaper compared to Ebisu, and generally easier to get in.

Hunnayyy why you do the cuttomer servit if you do not know how to...

Like forreals, we had to ask the staff a few times for water & other necessities. More than a few times. I should only ask once. Kthanks.

AND these bitches had the nerves to roll their eyes at us. UH UH girl you do not roll your eyes at the gays. We will poke your eyes out with chopsticks.

The ramen was mediocre. Bland. Distasteful. Unpleasant. Unapppealing. The broth was really bland for I had to pour hella soy sauce into my bowl. The fillers were typical: ginger, eggs, pork, miso soup etc etc. The water was tap water and one of the cups given to us had a small bug in it. Mmmm yumm food poisoning anyone?

Everyone raves bout their sushi so I guess we went here for the wrong intentions. Oh wells...

It's ok hunnayy my dollar will go towards another ramen place like Shinsen-Gumi... nomm nomm nommm

Yup---a-ok. Had a light Saturday dinner here with two friends who live in the neighborhood. They split the tsukimi (egg + fishcake + vegetable) with soba; I ordered the same with udon and a 49er roll (salmon, lemon, avocado, tobiko, shiso).

The roll looked and tasted fresh, and the udon was a pleasant ending to a very typical Sunset day. I found it lacking in flavor, though. There were several additional red pepper flakes swimming about by the time I finished. Not much for atmosphere, but our server was friendly and the food came out fast. I probably return to sample more sushi, and give the sashimi a try.

Stumbled upon this place after Zinefest just a block away last weekend. I was craving warm soup -- particularly ramen -- and found this place via Yelp app.

The service here was excellent and the prices are actually very moderate for the soup. I should mention that their sushi selection was pretty wide but since I'm not a sushi person, we only had soup for dinner. The portions are huge! I was tempted to get an appetizer but I'm glad I held back. My bf got a good size bowl of curry beef with udon noodles and that was nice and hearty. Full of flavor. They also give out complimentary hot tea (jasmine?) and our soups came with the typical small salad starter.

I'd say this place is pretty cheap since the service is so good, the restaurant is clean, and the food comes out right on time. Maybe if I'm the area again, I'd come by but SF is kinda far just for ramen.

I used to come here often for their Yakisoba, but I wasn't impressed the last couple times I went. Maybe they changed the chef or something, but their Yakisoba doesn't taste the same anymore. I've tried the ramen, and it's definitely not one of the best ones I've had. I would probably recommend the rolls.

The girlfriend and I live a few blocks from here, so we end up doing dinner here pretty often. None of the food is really amazing, but it's consistent and the staff are great.  The Nabe Yaki is great on a cold foggy Inner Sunset night, and the sushi comes from across the street at Ebisu, so it's a great option when one person wants noodles and another wants sushi.  The gyoza are also consistently tasty.

All in all you'll never have the best meal of your life here, but you'll never have a bad one either.  A great all around middle of the week "usual" if you live in the neighborhood and enjoy Japanese food.

One of my favorite Japanese noodle places. One of the best places on the Inner Sunset Sushi strip. Highly recommended!

I got ramen in a unramenlike restaurant.  My bad!  I should have been smarter and just ordered sushi stuff.  The Chashu Ramen I ordered wasn't the best ramen I've had but it wasn't the worst either.  I'll let the ramen thing slide since this restaurant isn't a ramen restaurant.

The service here is awesome.  Very nice and fast.

The specials on the wall are great items to choose from.  The Saba Kama we selected for the table was pretty good.

The restaurant is pretty claustrophobic.  It can sit a lot of people, but there is barely enough room for the servers to move around.  The prime eating times for lunch here offers long lines.  It's best to come early.
