This pizza ROCKS.
I've lived in NYC for the last ten years and so I am pretty particular about my pizza. I've come to believe that there is New York Pizza and then there is the rest of the universe's pathetic attempt to offer something on par. So that's just full disclosure on what I usually prefer.
That said, Hot Tomatoes is amazing pizza. Located in the sleepy little town of Williamstown, MA is this hidden gem along the Green River. (I think it's called the Green River. Whatever it's called, it's right in back of the place with five picnic tables to enjoy the pizza as it bubbles past.)
The pizza is large and has a thin, chewy/crispy combo crust. You bite in and there is a crispy crack and then it takes an extra bite to pull it apart. So....it's kind of both. The tomato sauce has fresh little bits of tomato in it. There is minced garlic, oregano, and pepper already in the sauce giving it a rich, hearty and tasty base. You could easily just order a basic cheese pizza and be completely happy. Then the other ingredients are super fresh and tasty. I've had sweet Italian sausage, mushrooms, and their clams casino (tons of fresh clams, red peppers, and bacon!!) pizzas. They have all been fantastic.
If you're in Williamstown for any reason, set aside an hour to sit by the green river, crack a bottle of wine, and devour one of the best pizzas of your life.
Overrated pizza. The chunky sauce is okay their normal sauce is not. The biggest problem i have is their dough, which i think makes or breaks a pizza. It is tough to chew and definitely tastes like cardboard when cooled/refrigerated. Also very pricey for what it is - can can spend $30+ for a pie.
very good pizza place, but somewhat inconsistent. they have a lot of awesome pies that you don't see elsewhere... like clams casino (clams, bacon, garlic) and shrimp & pesto which is my ultimate.
when they make it well, it's probably at the pinnacle of all the pizzas i've had in my lifetime. but sometimes they screw it up for whatever reason, and that's when their pizza becomes pretty ordinary although still not bad. i love their shrimp/pesto pizza, but sometimes they're generous with pesto, sometimes they'll put hardly any, sometimes there's hardly any shrimp on there. the crust itself is pretty consistent... nice thin semolina crust that i love. but sometimes (esp towards the end of the day) the bottom comes covered with black burnt ashes from the oven, which cannot be good for your health.
pretty pricey; medium pizza will run you $11-14. i don't mind paying a lot cuz their pizza's so damn good. just wish they'd get their consistency down.
Yum.
My sister's been raving about this place for a while now, I've just never had the opportunity to have it on my short visits back home. We had it last weekend, finally.
It's great pizza, overall. Typical yuppie, fancy-pants, gourmet pizza. And damn good. The ingredients taste so fresh, as if they were chopped just prior to baking. We had one pizza with pepperoni, red and green peppers, and mushrooms; the other had sliced tomatoes, fresh garlic & basil. Both were just terrific.
