Makawao is an interesting town in that it revels in its rustic cowboy history, yet has also become one of Maui's richest art enclaves. There are many art galleries and handicraft shops to explore. You can easily spend an entire day browsing and sightseeing.
I am fascinated by art glass, so a visit to Hot Island Glass studio was a real treat. Two partners, both named Chris, are second-generation artist/proprietors of this establishment. You can watch them create beautiful glass art objects right before your eyes, and they will enthusiastically demonstrate the entire process.
There is a large display of their work in the gallery, most of which is for sale. We bought one of their signature jellyfish sculptures, and had it shipped back to the mainland. It's always a real conversation piece for everyone who visits our home, and is a wonderful souvenir of our trip to Maui.
