I grew up less than half a mile from Hot Dog Johnny's, in Bridgeville, so this place is very close to my heart.
This is a hot dog stand, pure and simple. Johnny's has solid dogs*. You have a basic, short list of toppings: Mustard, ketchup, diced raw white onion, pickle spears, and relish. Notice that there is no chili, saurkraut, or anything fancy. Johnny's isn't about gimmick dogs. The "local" favorite is to order it with "everything", which, surprsingly, does't include all the toppings listed. You order an everything, and you get a MOP dog, which is Mustard-Onion-Pickle. Personally I don't think you should be putting ketchup on a hotdog after you've passed your 12th birthday, and I've never been a fan of relish, so Johnny's "Everything" dog is the only way to fly, so to speak.
They also have some excellent fries, that are usually my favorite part of the meal. They're not some super-duper batter-dipped or skin-on fries with sea salt or anything fancy, but there's just something about them. Very crispy, a deep golden yellow, and full of flavor. And actually not that greasy.
To drink, they have basic milkshakes, birch beer in frosted mugs, and for the real connoisseurs, fresh, cold buttermilk. Honestly, the buttermilk may take a while to grow on you, but after you get a taste for it, it's pretty good. And it's not every day that you run into a place that serves it as a beverage so it's worth a shot.
*So, here's why I give Johnny's 4 stars instead of 5. As you'll notice in a few of the reviews online, you'll get the occasional reviewer who complains that the dogs were bland, "just ok", or short of flavor. This is, unfortunately, and occasional occurance. I think it has something to do with them starting up a new batch of fryer oil for the dogs. It takes some time for fryer oil to get "seasoned" when it's fresh, and every so often you'll get a dud. There's really no way to avoid this here, but all the more reason for repeat vists!
Anyway, this turned into a short essay. Hope you find it useful! -

A million starts for Hot Dog Johnny's. I used to come here as a kid with my parents, and my mom used to go with her dad when SHE was a kid. Family tradition, I suppose.
Excellent hot dogs, and the best birch beer I've EVER had. Seated right next to a river, a nice little place to stop and have some delicious food.
My mom just asked me to overnight her some HDJ's hot dogs with the works. she's a nut. -

What can we say that others haven't already about this great hot dog joint in a town with an equally fantastic name?

It's not everyday you get to have a Hot Dog in Buttzville, along the Pequest River.

Couldn't ask for a better place for fast, delicious food. It's only hot dogs and fries, but boy are they good. Even though it's as busy as could be the staff is tolerant, pleasant and friendly. Everyone should go at least once, but people especially go there, it' s a landmark in Jersey.

Dare I say it - but Hot Dog Johnny's is THE personification of my much beloved state of New Jersey, and everyone who lives here should make it a life-affirming goal to get here at some point in their life.
Like Jersey, HDJ's is unassuming, but it packs a punch and doesn't apologize for it. It is what it is, and if you don't like it, then... some sort of expletive should suffice.
Yeah, it only does hot dogs. What of it?
Yeah, the dogs come with onions, relish, mustard and a friggen pickle on them. What of it?
Yeah, they serve birch beer in frosted mugs. What of it? (if you've never had birch beer, do so.)
And yes, HDJ's is technically in Buttzville, NJ. I'm sure they've heard every joke you can come up with already.
I love this place, maybe because for me it was always the reward at the end of a hard day of hiking in the local abandoned train tunnels with my family when I was a kid. HDJ's was one of the few things my family could agree on, because it's AWESOME. And if you don't think so too... then some sort of expletive should suffice. -

Driving out to PA on Friday we passed Hot Dog Johnny's and the place was hopping. I knew I had to stop on our way back, so Saturday we stopped in. Definitely get the hot dogs with everything - it has mustard, raw onions and a pickle wedge - very tasty. I ended up having two and splitting fries with the boyfriend. The birch beer was good, but I think I prefer root beer. I had never heard of birch beer or Hot Dog Johnny's before so I guess all that traffic on Rt 80 that caused us to take a back way to PA was a good thing after all.
The fries were very crispy, but not a must get. We got the birch beer to go and it looked like the mugs were smaller than the to go cups so I'm glad we did. The service was very quick and I'd definitely stop here next time I'm in the area. -

I've talked about Hot Dog Johnny's with my wife for as long as she's known me so we loaded the kids in the car and made a short road trip. It had been over 20 years since I'd been to Hot Dog Johnny's and I was craving a good hot dog for my birthday lunch.
During my 20+ years away from this Hot Dog Mecca it seemed like nothing changed-but it's been so long I could be wrong. What definitely didn't change were the delicious dogs, the always perfect fries, and the birch beers served in frosty mugs. As I bit into my first dog I remembered why we ALWAYS used to stop here on the way to the poconos. The food was as great as I remembered and sitting out at the picnic tables just brought back great memories. It was well worth the 30+ mile drive.
One thing's for sure-it won't take another 20 years for me to get back to one of the greatest hot dog joints in New Jersey!!
If you decide to hit up this Famous establishment don't come looking for variety-the menu is simple...hot dogs, fries, and soda...but stick with the birch beer (they actually also have buttermilk, but I'm not a fan). You won't be disappointed. And hey, buy a shirt and show everyone you're also a fan. -

This place is legendary in the area. Because the hot dogs are better than other hot dogs? C'mon. Get real. A hot dog is a freakin hot dog. It's just a cool joint, it's tasty enough, and it's cheap. Plus they have T-shirts.
4 hot dogs with everything (pickles, mustard and onions - a local favorite), 2 birch beers, and french fries came to $10.75. Can't beat it. -

I am in no way exaggerating when I tell you I've driven past Hot Dog Johnny's at least 50 times. It's hard not to notice the gigantic lines and full parking lots when you drive by. And it seems like everyone in central and northern NJ has heard of them. Yet this Saturday was the first time I've ever actually stopped to get food. Everything is pretty unorganized from the second you pull into the parking lot. There are 2 entrances into the building to order food which caused confusion and let people but the line. Also because the line went out the door it caused the door to be open. Instead of putting a sign up that nicely said close the door the nasty old lady behind the counter just yelled at everyone that walked in. When I did get up to the front of the line to order I stepped aside and waited another 10 minutes. It seemed like a long time to wait for some hot dogs and french fries, but especially long when the only thing you make is hot dogs and french fries. Once we got our food we grabbed a bench outside and dug in. The food wasn't bad, but everything was just mediocre. Hot dog was very small and not quality. The french fries were a little soggy. Just all in all not the best food I've ever had. I think this is more of a gimmick or a local favorite everyone grew up with, but I just didn't get it.

On the way to the Poconos a few weeks ago, my boyfriend, who went here as a child on the way to the lake with his parents a lot, suggested we stop by here for dinner. My reaction was not really positive. mmmm, hot dogs for dinner. Greeaaat idea...
Oh I was so naive. This place is so good and the thing is, I can't really even explain why. (will not be getting any "useful" ratings for this review, I guess.) The fries are just so crispy and amazing, the hot dogs are...something...just so perfect. The birch beer is tasty, and I don't even like root beer. You sit outside on picnic tables by a little river and it's just Americana. I loved it.
When we got to the lake, we were out boating the next day and a lady on another boat about 45 feet away screams at my boyfriend, who was wearing a Hot Dog Johnny tee shirt "I LOVE YOUR SHIRT!" Wow, apparently more legendary than I'd realized. -

This is a great roadside food stand! I use to come here as a kid every time the family drove from NYC to the Poconos.
Great "Fried" Jersey style Hot Dogs, and the Birch beer is off the hook. Get the frosty mug!, You get less soda than the travel cup but its a nice touch. Right on the river. Skip the fries they are no big deal. They also serve fresh buttermilk. I'm not sure what thats about and I'm pretty sure I don;t want to know.
Get the dogs with everything. You get mustard, onions and a pickle. -

My husband and I moved to The Pocono's recently from Seattle for his job. Here's the thing, we don't have random hot dog stands on the side of the road out where we are from... so, on a tip from one of his co-workers, we took a trip out to Buttzville (what?!?) to get a hot dog.
Glad we did. Maybe we were so happy about it because, like I said, we don't have places like this where we are from.
2 hot dogs, a pickle, an order of fries, a birch beer and a chocolate shake... $10 and some change. We should have got 2 orders of fries, but who were we to know. Hot dogs, awesome. Fries, nice and crunchy. Pickle, perfect. Birch beer- I'm not the birch beer drinker, I prefer root beer. Chocolate shake- YUMMY. He wanted to get the birch beer in the frosty mug, but we wanted to sit on the grass by the river, so no go, maybe next time.
Is it worth the 4 stars? I dunno, but I have nothing else to compare it to. So for now it is. -

I love love love Hot Dog Johnny's.
I grew up going to summer camp up in Hardwick, NJ and Hot Dog Johnny's was a traditional stop every summer both when my mom dropped me off and then picked me up. I can honestly say not a single thing has changed in all those years!
While the hot dogs are absolutely delicious (i recommend getting them with the works), the birch beer is always cold, and the french fries are always perfectly crisp I think what keeps bringing me back here year after year is the ambiance. There is just something some perfectly old-worldy about getting simple food and eating out by the river while kids play on the swings and dozens of bikers pull up.
Hot Dog Johnny's is an institution in my family, we all have the yellow t-shirts, and I hope nothing ever changes. I can't wait to go back this summer! -

On a recent trip back to North Jersey, I found myself wondering if Hot Dog Johnny's, my childhood favorite, was still as good as I remembered. Verdict? Heck's yeah! Dogs dropped in the fryer and home made birch beer in a frosted mug- so good.
The place remains mostly the same as I remember. They have winterized the place which was nice to see- the swings by the river on the white pebbles was still there.
Still cash only, but lends itself to the past and it's charm. Hopefully it won't be another 20 years before I'm back. -
Review from Mike P.
Came to Hot Dog Johnny's when we took a motorcycle trip that landed us right near Pequest. My friend insisted that we stop for food, even though less then 40 minutes prior we had already stopped for lunch. After a small argument whether we needed to eat again, we humored him and went.
The places menu is small, consists of a hotdog with relish or a pickle. Fountain drinks including brichbeer and fries. There might be another item or two but you get the picture. I decided to go with a birchbeer float and a hotdog since my friend wouldn't stop talking about it.
Overall, it was ok. I didn't think the hotdog was anything special. It was nice having the birchbeer float though. I feel like you can't really get that anymore at most places. -

Gotta go through Buttzville to get to Hotdog Johnny's.
On a recent trip to the Delaware Water Gap, what appeared before our road weary eyes (sitting a few feet above our empty stomachs) like an oasis in the desert? You are smart, YES! It was Hotdog Johnny's!
Hotdogs, fresh buttermilk, frosted mug Birch Beer, what's not to love? Well, to be honest the hotdogs sucked. For a place with hotdog in the name you'd expect a good dog, but alas I could have gotten better at Wawa :( The fries were decent, the birch beer fantastic, atmosphere family road trip like. Lots of bikers too. Basically it's a destination. We sat family picnic style and met people from all over.
So remember kids, if you are driving through Buttzville and thinking of wieners, stop in to Hotdog Johnny's.Listed in: Head north, young man.

Like a pants-stuffing rock star, Johnny's big signage shouts "I got the goods" but fails to deliver. A shockingly banal hotdog given the hoopla.
Five stars for the birch beer. -

There were a lot of roadside hot dog stands in the NJ/PA area when I was growing up. Each shop had it's own style, but Johnny's was always the one that I measured them against. Spread out against the backdrop of the Delaware River, Johnny's provided a cheap dog, Little Debbie snacks, and amazing, amazing, dirt-cheap t-shirts. I actually saw one in, of all places, Cosmo. My sister had the pic on her fridge.
This isn't high cuisine, it's a hot dog stand. But it's a hell of a spot, it's got some history, and it's in Buttsville! (Which, there is a "No Dumping" sign shortly after the "Welcome to Buttsville" sign if I remember correctly) -

If you ever find yourself driving on Rt. 46 through Buttzville, NJ, then you will find that the parking lot at Hot Dog Johnny's is always packed. Once a year as a kid, we would drive through here and it was tradition to stop here for lunch. A dog and a Birch Beer. Mmmm Mmmmm good.

Bear, DE
This is a place that everyone must go to once--not necessarily because you will have the greatest hot dog of your life, but because it's one of those word-of-mouth establishments that everyone needs to check out for themselves.
Their menu consists of hot dogs, birch beer, and fries. And this isn't necessarily a bad thing--the birch beer I had was one of the best I can remember. The hot dog really wasn't anything special in my book however, and the fries were just fries.
Do yourself a favor and try this place out. It's got a great old-time feel to it, and (unfortunately) I feel that places like this are going out of style...soon to be replaced by the big chain-type restaurants. -

I went to this place in the dead of winter mind you, and it was open. I put my magic imagination hat and envisioned it in the summer, with people all around and rainbows and chocolate swing sets made of happy. Anyways, back to reality, this is your classic local all star hot dog stand. Simple, and delicious. I had a classic with pickles and loved it. They are also known for having birch beer, which if you don't know, is basically beer, that starts by boiling birch twigs, sap and honey instead of your normal beer mash. I can only describe it as root beer that tastes like those white candy cigarettes you had as kids.
Fast service, great classic hot dogs and a local gem, birch beer.
It's a win, win...win? -

Being from Northeastern Pennsylvania, This place was a big stop whenever I went to NJ. Many memories of stopping here on the way to, and on the way back from the shore.
The hot dogs are very tasty...have a whole slice of pickle on them.
French fries are nice and crispy.
Birch Beer is awesome.
I'm not a Buttermilk person, but my father always enjoys a mug of it and he seems to like it a lot.
The T-shirts are very cool looking. I mailed one to my friend in Sweden. :-)
If passing by, this is a great place to eat. -

Always a great road trip from Scranton, my lady and I do this once or so a year. Great hot dogs, awesome fries and BIRCHBEER! Nice shirts of course, theres not really indoor seating, just a kinda closed in area, so it blows in the winter. Biggest downfall is they are one of those places that are total ketchup Nazis, like one packet per order of fries and if you ask for more, they'll give you ONE MORE packet! come on,guys!

Depending upon which route I take to Jersey, I may pass through Butzville. The name of the town and the nature of this hot dog "stand" are what seem memorable to me.
I don't ever expect to be won over by a hot dog, but there is a simplicity in their original menu that I appreciate. Hot dogs-nestled in a bun along side a pickle spear, plus a glass of birch beer and buttermilk. What more do we need?
Okay, so over the years the stand has expanded-there is now enclosed seating available and the menu has grown slightly.
Overall, it's a fun stop to make on a long drive. hmmmm, now I'm in the mood for a good birch beer! -

Astoria, NY
Food 2 + ambiance 7 + value 8 + service 5 = overall 4.1 / 10 (forgettable)
To be fair, my food rating is unfair. Hot Dog Johnny's has a short food menu, and I didn't try two of their headline items, buttermilk and birch beer. I did try their hot dogs, which were forgettable and even not so good. I tried one of their French fries, and I didn't want another. Their Coke was fizzy and good.
The atmosphere is the big seller here. It's a bright kelly green roadside stand, round, cement, impecably fresh-painted, very 1950s (?), with picnic tables under awnings overlooking the rushing Pequest River. It's a hive of activity in the middle of lazy countryside, swarming with happy, overweight eaters. There's a real buzz. -
Review from Jonny C.
Richmond, VA
Let me set the scene for you: You're driving along the western-most stretch of Route 46, perhaps on your way to or from the Delaware Water Gap. There's nothing even remotely interesting on either side of the road for miles. You enter a town called Buttzville (!) and then, all of a sudden, you see a gigantic hot dog and scores of people standing around, smiling, and eating. It can only be... Hot Dog Johnny's!
The atmosphere is really what makes Hot Dog Johnny's. When you drive by, it just looks like the place to be. But how is the actual food? The dogs are good; the fries are really good; and if you like eating an entire pickle, you're in luck. Best of all is the birch beer, served in a large glass mug. A word of warning though: Don't get onions on your dog - the cooks seem to interpret the word "onions" literally, as in more than one entire onion is chopped up and dumped on your weiner (and uncooked at that). Keep that in mind, and you should enjoy your pit stop. -
Review from Matthew H.
Randolph, NJ
The place may be a way from any center of civilization, but it is worth the trip! The hot dogs are cooked perfectly, not kept on a rotisserie like at 7/11s. The fries were cooked right, crispy on the outside and soft in the center with just the right amount of salt for taste. Last, but not least, the frosted mug of birch beer put it all together.
There is ample seating with picnic tables on the side under an awning for when it rains. -
Review from Sue K.
Cranford, NJ
Despite the stereotype of overcrowding, traffic jams and overall bedlam in New Jersey, there are western parts of the state where you could swear nobody lives. It's most surprising when one of those traffic-clogged retail-zoo-of-a-highways shrinks to a two-lane back road to nowhere. U.S. 46 is one of them, which I discovered only a few years ago. Its westernmost leg in Warren County rambles through small towns where there are more falling-down houses than there are occupied ones.
Buttzville is one of those communities, except for one tiny part. Much the way the population of the small town of Park City, Utah, swells exponentially during the Sundance Film Festival, a tiny corner of this tiny town becomes the most densely populated place in New Jersey when Hot Dog Johnny's is open.
The hot dogs are just okay -- I've had much better. The real attraction at Hot Dog Johnny's is the atmosphere. There's no better place in the state to relax and eat a tube steak. This roadside stand does a brisk summertime business, having stood between the scenic Pequest River and U.S. 46 for 60 years. You can enjoy your meal at picnic benches near the river while the kids play on the swingset, or just sit on the hood of your car, watching the Harley riders kick up gravel as they pull into the lot. It seems like everyone within 20 miles gravitates to the open-air counters to order up hot dogs, fries and root beer in frosty mugs. In other words, it's packed.
The joint even does a brisk business during the winter, when few would be be fishing in the Pequest, and most pleasure riders wouldn't be out on their motorcycles. They install wooden walls to create a vestibule around the counter area, and the enclosed dining area is generally packed. -

Retro heaven on a bun. This reminds me of a time long, long ago when as a child my parents would take me in the car to a drive in restaurant, where we would be served amazing, succulent cuisine such as hot dogs and french fries......
this place is in the middle of noplace special, just down the road from Buttzville ( no, i did not make that up......it is an actual town).
It is worth the 1.5 hour drive from Manhatten on a nice day. Hot dogs are juicy and tender, and laden with just enough fat and sodium to cloud the judgment. After succumbing to the siren song of tube steak, have the french fries and of course wash it all down with a refreshing frozen mug of Birch Beer on tap.
This can be a great impromptu stop, or an actual destination restaurant. Yeah, it's not Per Se. Take a nice drive with someone special, talk, bond, then munch on some dogs......
The hospitality industry is about making people feel good. It does not always have to be about stars in the Michelin guide. I dare you to come here and not feel good! -

I go way out of my way to get to this place... I'm from all the way near newark... This place has the second best deep fried hot dogs in NJ if you ask me! and theres something about eating outside.... I usually get 2 dogs with everything and fries(all cooked to order).... The quaint little fry and the benches under umbrellas and tents that you sit may have something to do with this places mistique. IDK... Maybe its all the damn bikers... come to think of it... I think its just that great feeling you get when your near the woods...

It seems like anywhere you go, you're bound to see someone wearing one of HDJ's signature yellow t-shirts. It is amazing that for a place that only sells roughly three items, hotdogs, fries, and root-beer, everyone seems to know about it. The hotdogs are great (and cheap) and the fries are always fresh. If you ever find yourself in rural New Jersey (yes such a place does exist, everywhere is not like Newark, in case you non-New Jersey residents did not know) you should really make it a point to have on of their hotdogs. The nostalgic old-America feeling you'll get eating here makes for a good time. My only complaint is that they don't have many other options other than those i previously stated. More toppings for the fries or a simple addition such as burgers would be a great improvement.

In order to get here you have to venture through some interesting area's of West Jersey. Pulling up to this place is the best part. Tiny place, huge parking lot. A lot of bikers(cool) and locals (not cool). All they have is hotdogs. That's it...period...end of story. Didn't realize this since my GF was not much of a HD eater. She asked what else they had and the lady working there said "Fries". Pretty funny. She decided to have a HD. I had 2. No special toppings. Ate mine in 2 minutes flat while she was still working on hers. They do have shakes but too much. Unfortunately West Jersey is NOTHING compared to North Jersey Texas Weiners.

Talk about a let down. I mean where's the sticky pay-off? Certainly not at Hot Dog Johnny's. I've tried this joint a few times after jumping off the old, abandoned train bridge over the Del. Water Gap. Thinking I found a match made in heaven, I went a few miles down to Johnny's and I left considerably unhappy. The hot dogs are absolutely terrible. I guess you'd catch me saying the Birch Beer is average. I imagine my only piece of advice would be to go there famished....maybe by doing so you can trick yourself into thinking this place doesn't so closely resemble an over-hyped waste of time.

Im very lucky to live near this place. really good hotdogs (raw onion and mustard is the only way to go), fries and birch beer. not to mention their iconic t-shirts, If you don't own one, you should. The place brings to mind a retro fifties era of roadside convenience, service with a smile and some crap that probably never existed in the first place, prior to the modern amenities of multi lane highways and homogeneous sterile rest stops.

Who doesn't like Hot Dog Johnny's? Was a favorite stop when I was a youngster, I don't stop as much now. The dogs are great, the fries are terrific and I love the root beer! My only gripe is the heartburn that comes with every meal, just a perk I gues...
