9 reviews for Hot and Hot Fish Club
I am the 7th reviewer and I am so lucky that I checked Yelp tonight when we landed in BHM. Yes, the reviews are correct - it IS as good as everyone says. At 6:20, I called for reservations and told her we would be there in 10 minutes. By the time we arrived, the place was packed and no more reservations were being taken for that evening (and this is a Tuesday!)
This place is what Yelp is all about for me: a small, unique, local place with great food and great service without having to pay $100 per person just to feel good about the meal. Any place that serves their salt and pepper open for the pinching from a sea-shell is a good place for me! :)
We had fried green tomatoes with crawfish topping and the field greens salad with ham and parmesan for apps. Dinner was the trio of pork, grilled swordfish and bay scallops (there were three of us). All were superb and unique.
Service was attentive, not pushy, and helpful with suggestions. We were chosing a $40 bottle of wine and he did not flinch at the fact that we were not looking at the "reserve" list. (The economy...)
My final comment here is that if I were in a party of one or two people, I would have no problem sitting at the stools around the kitchen. The chefs are masterful!
Just a few extras that have not been mentioned. I went with a friend on a Tuesday night at about 6PM and without a reservation you have to have dinner at the bar! Now a lot of places will just tell you they can't seat you but they were not playing games because within 30 minutes the place was packed, not even a seat at the bar! So call ahead.
I had the simply grilled fish. That night it was heads on gulf shrimp served over a bed of roasted veggies with quinoa. Excellent! My friend had trigger fish. He said it tasted great but it was full of bones, not just a few but really loaded, that's why I'm giving this place 4 instead of 5 stars.
Service was great. Beware the prices if you're on a budget. I had my dinner, no appetizer, no dessert and just drank tap water and my bill was $45 with tip. If you start adding wine and courses you could easily be at $100 per person.
The olny reason I give this place 5 stars is that there is not room for 10+ stars. Hot and Hot is the best resturant in Birmingham and maybe in the whole world! Chris Hastings always provides a fresh menu with high end food without appearing to be "trying too hard". This place is the real deal. You can always find Shrimp and Grits on the menu,an outstanding dish. The tomato salad is served seasonally and is a real treat.
Last week, I had one if the best Grouper entrees ever!
We always sit at the Chef's counter where we can watch all of the kitchen action. Do not miss the French Pressed coffee after dinner.
This is one of my favorite Birmingham restaurants.
I love the cheese plate, tomato salad (seasonal), chocolate souffle, and I've loved every entree I've had here. They emphasize fresh, seasonal produce from local organic farms, and the menu is always changing.
For dinner, I like sitting at the chef's counter and watching all the action. The ambience is warm and comfortable, not too stiff or formal.
Hot and hot is also a great place to grab a drink. There are yummy cocktails at the bar, and you can snack on boiled peanuts or pickled okra.
One of my top meals ever.*
Started with a glass of Prosecco and appetizers of:
a) Corn Bisque with Lump Crabmeat
b)Hot and Hot Tomato Salad with Apple Smoked Bacon, Fresh Peas, Corn, Fried Okra and Chive Aioli -- The signature "Hot and Hot" tomato salad could have been an entree. It was large. It was terrific. Didn't know how that could be topped until the entree of scallops arrived. Oh my!
Entrees:
a) Hot and Hot Shrimp and Grits with Country Ham, Tomatoes, Fresh Thyme and Ver Jus
b) Pan Seared Day Boat Scallops on Sweet Corn Succotash with Cole Slaw and Cracklin' Cornbread -- unbelievable.
I am sorry to say we were so full, that we only had a taste of the Peach Cobbler.
This place is a must. Get your reservation early.
* Top includes: Citronelle (DC), Bouchon (LV), Upperline (NO), Magnolias and Charleston Grill (Charleston), Bonsoir Clara (Brussels),
It really deserves 5 stars. I travel all over the world and this Birmingham Alabama is right up there with my faves. Always interesting tasty fish, meats and desserts. Definitely not what you would expect to find in Alabama. This place could be in NY with the quality of food and service. Whenever I am in Birmingham this is a must go.
This is our standard for a special night out. My wife is in the food business, and she loves to sit at the chef's counter and watch the action. I just love the food. We've had their standard fare and their exotic adventures, and it's always excellent.
This restaurant was so fun and cool. Absolutely great food and great drinks. Very cool atmosphere with the open kitchen over looking the guests. You should defiantly try this place out. It is right behind the Western in 5 Points on a little side road. Wonderful food. New menu every day. Great place to take someone you are trying to impress.
This restaurant is on the south side of Birmingham which has become the best area for food in the city. It is fairly high priced for Birmingham, appetizers at about $12.00, and entrees $25.00 to $35.00.
It is difficult to make a recommendation as the menu varies, however, I have been several times and the fish selections are always good. See their web site as the menu is updated often.
The place is somewhat noisy and attracts a younger crowd than Highland Bar and Grill which is 2 blocks away.
Be sure to look carefully at the directions as the place is on the side of what appears to be a old strip center and not easily seen from the main street (Highland Ave.)
