amazing food, the ponderously slow service left me underwhelmed though
almost everything on the menu seems aimed at reinterpreting a traditional meat dish, which is great for vegans missing out on an old favorite; as an omnivore however I wanted to try something new, rather than I cant believe its not brisket, and that left me with only two or three options.
despite the criticism I will definitely be back.
Ok, don't EVER go here without reservations. We went on Saturday night right when they opened at 6 and the hostess said they didn't have a table available until 9pm. We ended up sitting at the bar and eating our meal, but I would have much preferred an actual table when spending that much!
The bartender was nice but guard your drink! He will dump it out if he thinks you are done..

I don't know what can be said about Horizons that has not already been said. It's just absolutely delicious.
Like many of the other reviewers, I am by no means a vegan, but my meal here was probably one of my favorites ever in Philly. My gf and I ordered the Jamaican BBQ seitan and the Purple Potato Fritters for our appetizer and the Pacific Rim Grilled Tofu and Pan Seared Peppercorn Tofu as the entrées. The BBQ seitan was simply amazing. I cannot even articulate how wonderful it tasted. Everything else that we ordered was also first-rate in taste and preparation, but the seitan was out of this world.
Luckily for Horizons, I might actually say that the great meal is worth the pricey bill. There is some validity in thinking something is "good" merely because it is rare/expensive - even though many places fail in trying to make this a self-fulfilling prophecy, Horizons actually succeeds in this. It becomes a worthy treat with the food to back up the price.
I had been really excited to eat at Horizons when I finally got to a few months ago. The experience definitely didn't disappoint. The food is absolutely amazing, beautifully presented, and really innovative. The atmosphere is really nice. This would be a great place for a fancy date or special occasion.
I had a buckwheat crepe filled with mushrooms and topped with pesto as an appetizer. I didn't 100% love my entree, a mushroom dish, but I stole several amazing bites of my friend's Catalan Tempeh, which tasted like no other tempeh I've ever had.
I don't really know how the chefs at Horizons do such amazing things, but the food is outstanding and it's a great, and very worth-it, splurge. Service was good and they were very accommodating of my friend's dietary needs (gluten-free).
I can't wait to go back to Philadelphia and eat at Horizons again.
The ONLY thing I don't like about Horizons is that I'm too poor to eat there on any regular basis. That's it.
Every single dish I've ever had at Horizons, I've loved. Appetizers, entrees, desserts, you name it. I especially love their seitan dishes.
And can we talk about the little bread slices that come in the fancy spirally thing? I could eat the entire thing myself, but then I know I won't have room to devour my entree.
Finally, let me add that I took my 85-year-old grandmother and extremely picky mother here, and both of them thought it was the best restaurant they'd been to in ages. Neither one is vegan.
This review is making me want to go to Horizons again really soon. Good thing I get paid this week.
As vegetarians we were really excited to try this restaurant. However, as the night began, we were initially disappointed with the wait time. We had reservations at 8PM and arrived on time, but still had to wait for 20 minutes. Oddly enough, three parties that came after us were seated promptly. The hostess did not have any explanation as to why our table was not yet ready.
Once at our table our server did a great job explaining the menu and answering our questions. We started off with the tomato soup which came with a delicious eggplant mousse, and the Jamaican bbq seitan which was one of the highlights of the night. As previous meat eaters, we found the taste and texture was spot on. We also got the vietnamese tacos which we found to be decent, but more reminiscent of mediterranean flavors. The complimentary homemade foccacia bread was a nice touch but not the greatest we've had.
We quickly finished our appetizers and then waited for our waiter to return to the table to clear our plates and get our entree orders. It was 9:30, over an hour since we had been seated and ordered our appetizers, by the time our server decided to stop by our table. Our server cleared our plates and then disappeared for another 10 minutes before coming back with the menu to get our order. Had he been helping other diners we would have been more understanding, however he was standing by the bar talking to another server and we had to get his attention to come to us. Afraid that if we took too long looking at the menu, our waiter would disappear again, we ordered the moment he gave us the menu. We ordered the hearts of palm and grilled seitan as well as a side of bbq rutabaga. We both found the hearts of palm to be flavorful and unique. It was beautifully presented as well. Compliments to Chef Rich for using under-used vegetables and flavors so creatively. The grilled seitan was also well presented but the meaty flavors quickly became overwhelming. We both decided to not get desert-everything seemed appetizing but the night's slow service made us lose any appetite we had.
The food was certainly delicious, but the service was surprisingly poor and incredibly disappointing. We probably won't be coming back.
Food: 4 stars
Service: 2 stars
Overall: 3 stars
Wow.
I am not vegetarian but I thought I would treat my girlfriend since she misses out on sharing dishes when we go out.
I did not miss meat at all. Partly that is because I ordered a delightful dish with a variety of mushrooms (which I love) and found each type uniquely prepared. Her dish, a Pacific-inspired grilling of tofu with vegetables, was a hit as well.
I feel I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the breads alone were enough for my taste buds, so when entrees came and raised the bar I was very satisfied.
Even the wines were great, my Syrah had a dry and powerful feel that went great with the spice of the mushrooms.
We had a few downsides. The desserts leave a lot to be desired, if you're not vegan skip it and find a decent place. Our server was great though seemingly absent when it came time for us to pay the check! Also when we asked where we could get a cab (I know, stupid tourists) the host seemed almost insulted to be bothered.
Otherwise, price and atmosphere were fine, can't afford every week but could go often. I'd recommend eating upstairs if you get a choice, it was much quieter.
This is THE go-to vegan restaurant in Philadelphia, especially when you have a special occasion to celebrate or you want to impress a date or out-of-towners.
OK, so I'm not vegan, but I've found that this is a great place to bring friends who are vegan, vegetarian, or have dairy allergies. Even my emphatically carnivorous friend says, "If vegetarian food always tasted like this, I would be a vegetarian."
For apps, don't miss the Jamaican BBQ seitan. For entrees, you really can't go wrong -- everything I've tried here has been wonderful. The only downside is that you might suffer from terrible indecision since everything sounds so good! And then there's dessert. Don't be fooled into thinking that typically dairy-heavy desserts can't be good at a vegan restaurant. The key lime cheesecake is heavenly! The peanut butter ice cream in the chocolate peanut butter dessert is amazing too.
Apart from the food, you'll have the "fine dining" experience. The atmosphere is lovely, and the service is very attentive. Considering that most of the veggie restaurants in Philly are more along the lines of the pizza and hoagie shacks, this is a really nice treat.
I'm not a vegan. Hell, I am not even a vegetarian. But I am a wannabe foodie... The Yelp reviews for this place were stellar so I suggested a dinner party here for Erin G.'s 40th bithday bash. We had about 8 people and we pretty much covered the main course and app. menu. EVERYTHING was delicious. Everything was filled to the brim with flavor and the portions were awesome. I had a bite of everything and all of it was great. The BBQ Jerk seitan was so damn close to pork I thought they were lying. My main course was the pacific brim tofu and it too was damn near perfect.
This is a perfect date restaurant guys. Its classy, they offer some great stiff drinks, and there isn't a bad thing on the menu. Go.
p.s. Erin G. isn't really 40.
fantastic food!!!! yes its pricey, i agree, but its so worth it. the only problem i had with the place was that I went there for my birthday and my parents brought a vegan/gluten-free cake and they refused to serve to us because it wasn't from the restaurant. It def put a damper on the night (and that's weird customer service) but the food is undeniably amazing.
I'm not gonna lie, when i hear Vegan i generally cringe. The only reason I even went here in the first place was because it was my girl's birthday dinner and it'd make her really happy if I attended. I must say, this place is Bangin'! Changed my entire perspective on vegan food as a whole. Great Job, Horizons!
I'd recomend this spot to even the Hardest of the Hard Core Carnivores. ...as long as they could afford it.
Stopped in for the first time on a friday night and was surprised to find that it wasn't as crowded as I expected it to be, which meant having no problem grabbing a seat at the upstairs bar. I ordered a Rye and Root from my extraordinarily friendly bartender Lisa, which I was told had just been added to the drink menu that day. It was essentially a manhattan using both rye whiskey and Root liquor. I found it to be very enjoyable, and as a bonus had a licorice swizzle stick which I kept for later.
I ordered the jamaican BBQ seitan along with the "fries." The seitan had a slightly chewy caramelized exterior which quickly gave way and literally melted in the mouth. The BBQ sauce on it was thick and dark, but not overpowering. The mustard on the side was almost too subtle for the seitan, but ended up being great on the "fries."
The "fries" are pretty amazing, but the name is totally misleading. They are little baby potatoes, fried and slightly smooshed. The outside skin is extra crispy and fragile, giving way to a soft potato inside that totally falls apart the moment you bite in and break the skin holding it all together. These potatoes are a work of art made out of food. No joke.
I finished off with the saffron crème brûlée which was well prepared and had a richness which made me forget until later that it was actually vegan.
Overall a wonderful experience. Spent a considerable amount more than I usually would for a meal, but I would never argue that it wasn't worth it. I look forward to the next time I have an excuse to treat myself to some really special food like this again.
As a ravenous meat eater, I would consider going vegetarian if someone cooked for me like this every day. I took my girlfriend here for her birthday, not because it was a vegetarian restaurant, but because it was a restaurant that had received good reviews. We both enjoyed our meals, dessert was awesome, and we left feeling satiated. Additional note, it was a nice change knowing that the food in my stomach was super healthy. Overall, a positive experience we plan to duplicate in the future.
Holy Vegan Moly!
This has been HANDS DOWN my favorite restaurant in Philly and finally felt compelled to give it the old 5 star shout out!
When I told my boyfriend I wanted to go to this incredible vegan restaurant he was rather skeptical. He's an open-minded eater, but the thought of meatless and even FISH-less entrees sounded daunting to him.
As soon as he had one bite of their incredible portobella carpaccio (following some of their delicious homemade focaccia) he was captivated! Then it was just a matter of enjoying some of their Vietnamese Tacos, brimming with the tastiest tempeh and a few bites of their SURREAL Jamaican BBQ Seitan (which he admitted was much better than any meat he'd ever had) that he began to thank me for bringing him to Horizons.
The least impressive dish we had was the Autumn Bouillabaisse--which appeared to be a few pieces of squash sitting in what would have been a lovely broth in a greater quantity, but seemed more like a sauce because there was so little of it.
In any event, the Chocolate Tasting Dessert was a great conclusion to this incredible meal.
If you haven't been to Horizons, GO. Even if you don't believe you can be satisfied with a meatless meal, just give it a shot. You'll be sooo glad you did!
i've never had anything but a great experience at horizons -- i'm vegan + love to go out to eat + often grow tired of the few places i know i can eat out at in philly.
i've never had anything that was less than incredible - from their bread, appetizers through to dessert. they have a nice wine + beer list as well, and i got to try the root liqueur in a ginger beer the last time i was there. very tasty...and very strong!
the *only* criticism i can find is the prices are a bit steep -- but i'm fine to only go on special occasions. i've brought many meat eaters here + they had zero complaints (for once, ha ha) and all were suprised at how great the food tasted for "being vegan"...
this is the place to bring any vegan haters / or your family who doesn't believe that eating vegan is not only really healthy, but really great tasting, too.
I can't believe that it took my vegetarian ass 6 years of living in Philadelphia before I took a trip to Horizons. My friend Josh suggested it for a group dinner to start my birthday weekend off right - and that it did.
We arrived with a pretty large group (8) and while we had to wait a bit for our reservation, they gave us a great table in the center of the upstairs back room. I'm not used to making decisions when every menu item is a possibility, and it was a real treat. Between the group we ordered almost every item on the menu, and they were ALL delicious. I got a big kick out of all of my carnivore friends ooohing and ahhing over their dishes - no meat was missed!
I also had some great mixed drinks.
While it's a little pricey, and the art upstairs could use a major makeover, and the wait staff was SLOW (perhaps because they had a guaranteed tip) the space was great, and the food was fabulous!
I went here with my Special Lady last night after strolling on South Street and was pleasantly surprised by innovative vegetarian food and an intimate yet lively atmosphere.
Pros
-Great Vegetarian Dishes - namely the BLT Sliders appetizer and the Hearts of Palm Cakes - many, many others looked interesting and merit another visit.
-Good selection of beers - I had a Rye Pale Ale which sported some serious hopsiness. Didn't seem to be any beginner beers on this menu.
Cons
-Tentative service - our waiter was a little shy for my taste and didn't come by to check on us after delivering the food. Needed to speak up a bit and give a more sure-handed assessment of the meal for folks who aren't as versed in vegetarian food.
-A little bit on the loud side.
-One critique of the Pacific Rim Grill Tofu - while the flavor was generally good, I thought it could have gone farther to match the Tropicality of its name. One easy way would be to cut up the slab of Tofu and chunk it up on a skewer with some tropical fruit (pineapple, mango, etc.) to maximize the surface area exposed to charring and saucing. As it is now, it got a little monotonous in the middle.
Ha, I am writing my review right next to my baby bro's (shout out, Johaun C!! hollah.) bc DUH we went there together. With Moms. A full-fledged family affair! Huzzah.
True to our family roots, I am also a vehement carnivore. But Horizons totally blew me away! Everything was unique and well-flavored and I didn't feel like I was chewing cud at any point in the evening.
One complaint--who decides to name a veg restaurant "Horizons"??? It sounds like a freakin rehab facility!!
Even though I don't live near Philly anymore, some rather unsatisfactory visits to NYC vegan spots have me pining for Horizons.
It's a wonderful place tucked into a little hideaway on South Street. The first level is a bar. One night I saw Amos Lee down there and rapped to him and his friends for a few minutes, and that was a kick. But the real deal is upstairs...
The decor is very dim and romantic with good space for those smart enough to have made a reservation ahead of time. They bring you very tasty, light bread at the outset to tide you down before the meal, but don't have too much. Save room for what may be the most delicious vegan experience on planet Earth.
As a card-carrying carnivore, I surely prefer meat in all its fleshy goodness so it must be a great place if I'm going on record to say that this is my favorite restaurant in the world. I've had almost everything on the menu and everything is scrumptious. It's a pricey spot, but that's okay because this outing is a major event. You're not just here to grab a bite. You're here to top off a fantastic evening with fantastic food.
The bathroom is very nice, the wait staff has always been personable, I didn't drink the alcohol but there is a full bar upstairs also. Just sit back in your dressy clothes and be lulled by the soothing atmosphere and jazzy, funky music. My God, what a place.
They serve the most wonderful creme brulee' so make sure you give that a try after dinner. And if the meals are to your liking, buy their recipe book on the way out and make the food at home. Good Lord...I wish I could go there right now.
Okay bye.
p.s. - if anyone can recommend some great vegan in Brooklyn or Manhattan, I'm all ears.
Woah nelly is that some good veggie food or what. The best way to get new textures and new flavors is always to go to an expensive veggie joint. Worth every dime.
Best vegan spot on the East Coast, or 2nd in the world, I've eaten at. Such creativity, originality, great service, different space, easy to get to.
Would appreciate seeing, and eating!, their take on brunch.
The Mojito Perfecto this Saturday was Take No Prisoners :-)
For vegan fine dining, there is no place better in the Philly area. I'm not even a vegetarian and I love it there. The wine selection is great and the food is presented so well, but the best part is the taste.. I love eating there so much.. Also the spot of one of my first dates with my girlfriend!
Went here recently for some small bites and it was everything I hoped for - amazing vegan food.
We split the Black olive blinis, which were AMAZING, only downside is that I could have eaten 20 of them (we only got 3); the olives which were GOOD; the smoked tempeh which was GREAT and the Jamaican BBQ which was AMAZING, but again being the glutton I am, I could have eaten a hoagie of it.
I'm absolutely going back but this time saving up for a full-scale dinner.
wow.
that's all there is to it. i'll be the first to admit to my carnivorous tendencies... but my recent foray into the dismal land of vegetarian/vegan cuisine has quite literally, blown my mind. this food is top-notch; and, to execute food so wonderfully WHILE "limiting" the cuisine's options... Horizons, i salute you. when a restaurant can execute and present something so simple as English peas at such a perfect level... wow. bring a date. bring your friend. bring your mom. bring your friend's mom and his date. i don't care, but you have to try this place.
I forced a team of ten non-vegan family members and friends here for my 30th birthday dinner and adored it. Not a single carnivore, even my 75 year-old, set-in-her-ways grandmother, complained one bit. Everyone left stuffed silly and surprised at how much they didn't hate their food even without a drop of meat or dairy. Cocktails were yummy and I loved the second floor's ambiance. The interior is breezy, comfortable and easy on the eyes. It didn't break the bank but wasn't casual either. I'll be back plenty. Stand-outs were the hearts of palm cakes, the jamaican bbq seitan, and the saffron creme brulee. It's so nice to have a full menu of creative, delicious options finally!
Good:
Best gourmet vegan food in Philadelphia
Starter bread is addictive (you can ask for more, but they don't tell you that)
Servers are knowledgeable
Not So Good:
Be prepared to spend your next paycheck
Reservations (up to one week in advance) generally required
You can get better desserts for less at Govinda's a few blocks over (Broad St. and South St.)
This is one of my favorite spots in the city to dine. For Valentine's Day, my boyfriend and I ordered the seitan rueben sliders and I swear to god it was one of the best things that I have ever tasted. I would rank it up there with some of the most delicious non-vegetarian plates that I have had as well. I am not a vegan, nor am I a vegetarian, but I do love good food and healthier cuisine (if it tastes good) is always a plus.
There is one major problem with this place though. They change their menu too frequently. Sounds like a real luxury problem, but it's true. We talked about those sliders for two weeks and went back for them specifically. Sadly they were gone. This has happened with several dishes that we both liked. One of the hosts, a friend of mine, says that this is not the first time she's heard this complaint. It's an issue in my opinion because I would seriously go back once a week for that one dish. Alas, it has been several months. Oh well.
Sound advice: Don't get too attached to any one dish.
i went weeks ago and have been meaning to share my thoughts about my horizon experience.
well.....
i was going to their spot when they were in willow grove, a small little cafe trying to share new flavors and fusion, before the green explosion. i wasn't as open to tree salads and such, as i am now.
fast forward to the day i ate at horizons with months of planning to eat there and it was just ok. quite anti-climatic and ok. nothing really stood out for me. it was tasty but, that's just it.
peace & progress
p.s. does high cost really mean or equal better?!?
This is vegan/vegetarian Nirvana.
First of all as a vegetarian it's really reassuring and inspiring to be somewhere where the entire menu is vegan or vegetarian. None of that "well, here's the one pasta choice" that's a veggie option. It's especially inspiring to be somewhere vegetarian that's not hippie desolation but romantic and upscale.
Horizons has the ideal combination of great atmosphere and great food. So that's why this has such a high rating.
For an appetizer my girlfriend and I had the Jamaican BBQ seitan which is one of the trademark dishes of the restaurant. And for good reason. It's perfect. It's so good we wished we could have had an entree-sized version.
For entrees we had the mac and fake cheese and a mushroom platter. The mac and cheese was a new addition. It was comforting. But the mushroom platter was the real prize! A very creative chef took four very different types of mushrooms and built four totally different mini-dishes around them. All with different textures and looks.
Just a note: it's not BYOB. The wine choices are excellent but it can really rev up the price of your meal. The server was especially knowledgeable about wine. He brought the wine bottle out to pour which was a nice touch because you can see the label.
this was SUCH a delicious vegan place... and nice and upscale too, not like many vegan/vegetarian places i have eaten at where the staff is super flighty and awkward... the whole ambiance, etc. is great, and they have outdoor seating!
the seitan tasted just like meat!!! you could have been fooled. so good. we had some kind of asian bruschetta for an appetizer, it was amazing. i had the veggie plate, consisting of eggplant stuff red peppers - all delicious. i can't remember everything else but we certainly left full and satisfied!
they also have a good beer & wine selection and a bar which appeared to be selling some delicious looking drinks!
i would 100% go back here!
Don't tell your friends non-vegan that this place doesn't serve meat. Just take them there, and order for them if you have to. They will love it. The food is absolutely amazing (and I'm definitely a fan of the food chain). This is the place to come when you're looking for something new and wonderful. You don't even care that no meat or dairy is used. The restaurant has an upscale ambiance, not the crunchy feel you might expect from chefs who can't kill anything. Or milk anything. Who cares that no animal was harmed in the creation of your meal. Who cares if its good for the planet. Horizons stands on its own in quality and flavor. None of your carnivorous friends will think you've gone over to the dark side. If you really feel a need to balance the scales, though, just drive your SUV.
This is the best food, vegan or otherwise, I've ever had. I keep thinking about this place, like it's my lost lover. Everything was artfully prepared and presented with top-quality service. The golden beet tapas were succulent and its accompanying edamame puree just amazed me. The portobella carpaccio was delicate and tender. The Bourbon BBQ tempeh was filling and tasty, but I found that the Pacific Rim Tofu was tastier and had better side dishes (ponzu brocolini, edamame mash). For dessert, make sure to try their cheesecake or their chocolate peanut butter ice cream brownie, both of which were world-class.
The prices are high, but the quality of the food is five-star gourmet and worth every penny. This is a great, fancy place to take a date (upstairs level) or a hip, friendly place to get a drink and some light dishes (on the lower level).
For this vegan, Horizons is the top restaurant in the US, and easily beats would-be competitors like Candle 79 and Millennium.
I never thought I would eat at a vegan restaurant, especially an upscale one. Since i started dating a vegetarian, my eyes have been opened! We went to Horizons for our one year anniversary, and I was amazed by the flavors in the dishes we ordered.
I ordered the BBQ grilled seitan and he had the Jamaican Jerk seitan. I also got the special soup with smoked chilies and an avocado crema. I never thought to use avocados for a creamy flavor in place of dairy! The barbecued smoky flavor in the grilled seitan was so amazing I couldn't believe it. At the risk of sounding cliche, it tasted like chicken!
The service was great, despite being a busy evening we were seated quickly and every need was attended to. We had so much food we had leftovers, and my boyfriend loved the food so much he ate mine and I was truly disappointed! I know we will return to this restaurant because there are not many places in Philly we can go where he can have anything on the menu.
This is the best vegetarian restaurant I've ever been to. Actually it's one of the best anything restaurants I've ever been to. I'm not vegetarian, but the flavors in the jamaican bbq seitan are out of this world! I love the steak, but it can get heavy... that's a lot of protein! The service is always great, they have interesting beers on tap but that's typical for Philly. Expensive, but worth it!
last week, for my birthday dinner, i just HAD to visit my favorite restaurant, horizons. we had the 5 course tasting menu, and it was THE BEST meal i've ever had. i've never considered saying that before, but i can't stop thinking about our next visit.
there is 1 dish that i have tried twice, that i think it truly sub-par: their peanut butter/chocolate cake. it is too dense, too dry, and gives vegan cakes a bad name. ...but let's make it clear that this is the ONLY thing i've ever tasted at horizons that wasn't 200% than food from anywhere else.
thank you, horizons, for making my birthday so fantastic!

Are all the servers at Horizons trained origami masters? Scoff at my ignorance, I'm baffled by the whole "napkin thing". Every time you get up from your table, a member of the wait staff dashes over to fold your napkin back up into a triangonal pyramidal geometric configuration. I've tried hiding the napkin in various locations, but they're always able to hone in on the cloth with such speed... I'm almost anticipating the next time I dine at Horizons for magic tricks, you know, rabbits pulled out of a hat.
The decor is a bit dated, and everyone always seems a bit too small for their chair, however, their food is exceptional and inspired. I like that they tend to steer away from faux-meat, however, I would like to see more vegetable, as opposed to soy-based, dishes on their menu. The last outing, my boy and I split an order of the sliders, he order the mushroom pub plate, while I got the paella (which should have been more accurately named a risotto). We always get the crème brûlée for dessert. Their beer selection is always on point, which is a huge bonus. The portions are generally small and a good pint can help to fill that extra space in your belly.
I wonder how accessible the recipes in their cookbook are.....
Overall, a fab restaurant for someone who is a vegetarian! The BBQ Seitan absolutely lives up to its name and the bread they bring out was reminiscent of warm pillows of dough. Perfect!
I was a tad disappointed with my tofu dish however. I like my tofu pretty cooked so it is chewy. I felt like I got a block of tofu with pretty grill marks and barbecue sauce on top. Don't get me wrong, it was good but I guess I was expecting more.
We also shared a side of potatoes which were super crisp with a delish chipotle sauce.
I'd go back again, but I would try something besides the tofu, which quite frankly, I can prepare pretty much the same way at home.
I had dinner here with 3 girls who are either vegetarian or vegan. It was actually entertaining to see how excited they were about going to a gourmet vegan restaurant. I've actually never been to one myself, but being a non-vegetarian, and definitely non-vegan... I guess it never crossed my mind to try one out. However opportunity presented itself and here we were at Horizons.
To tell you the truth, I didn't recognize a lot of words on the menu, such as seitan [a wheat gluten that resembles the texture of beef], tempeh [fermented soybeans into a cake form], panzanella, cantharellus, carpaccio, etc
I ended up not being as adventurous as I wanted to and ordered the Pacific Rim Grilled Tofu for my entree and shared the Vietnamese Bruschetta and Yucatan Chopping Spinach Salad with the other girls. Oh and a pitcher of pomegranate sangria (yum!) The presentation of dishes were beautiful. We couldn't help but want to take pictures before we dug in. We finished off with the chocolate peanut butter cake with peanut butter ice cream.
Everything in my entree tasted really good, and the tofu was a firmer consistency than I am used to (being asian and all). It was prepared like a grilled salmon or mahi mahi and it even had almost the consistency of a filet of those types of fish. I also tried a little bit of everyone else's entrees and was really impressed. Even this carnivore was content at having a meal at a completely vegan restaurant!
Pomegranate martini. Jamaican BBQ seitan. Edamame mashed potatoes. Three reasons you should come here immediately.
Their big plates are fine, but I actually love their small plates and sides. I crave that seitan over here on the other side of the country! And it's a place where it's actually pleasant to eat at the bar. (Maybe because of proximity to aforementioned cocktail?)
True story: Last time I was there, a couple of weeks ago on a visit back East, some ladies were having a bachelorette dinner. Horizons made a vegan penis cake for the occasion. I bet their award from The Knot is already in the mail!
I'm not a vegetarian, but I love to see what can be done with a little bit of creativity. The Jamaican BBQ seitan is amazing! It's very upscale and vegan, which is something you don't normally find. They only have local beers on tap (yards, philly brewing company, slyfox), which is pretty darn cool if you ask me.
The food presentation is awesome! They make it look like a masterpiece, and it makes me kind of afraid to destroy to by eating it. But it really tastes as good as it looks!
