54 reviews for Horizon Casino & Resort
So sad.
There is about 30-50 slots left. All the basic ones that do not need to be paid licensing fees, so no Wheel of Fortune, no Monopoly. No more table games. No Baskin Robbins.
But Starbucks is open still!! Short line and friendly service!
Apparently the owners went bankruptm then sold back to the original owners and now they are in talks to demo it and turn it into a Living/Retail space. So said our Cab Driver!
I had good times here - won most of my money here. But now its a quick in and out for Starbucks stop.

The horizon is not what it was. They are in the final death throws, so much of the service and amenities have been cut.
It is worth staying here if it's the cheapest/only room in town, and plan on spending your dining/gambling time elsewhere.

I'd like to take you to a segment in my reviews I like to call...." Really??!!"
Really Horizon, you didn't think it was necessary to stock the bathrooms with soap?! Water and a raggedy towel seem sufficient to wash off the massive germs from a night of drinking and gambling? Really?!
And you couldn't be bothered with finding a variety of art to hang on the walls so you framed 4 of the same EXACT cheesy ass prints for each room?! Really, Horizon, Really?!
And you didn't get the memo that room service is a viable source of income among one of the largest casinos in Tahoe? With said casino being chalk full of drunks and stoners who would love nothing more than to order one of everything on the menu and have it delivered right to the room?! Really Horizon, no room service? Really?
Forgot to heat the hot tub Horizon?? Really? Has the economy taken that much of a hit on you that you can't afford to heat a small pool of water over 30 degrees?! Really?
And the floors? Really? No time for a quick run through with a steam cleaner huh? The massive blood/puke/God-knows-what stains that cover 90% of the carpet are not attractive I assure you. You're not worried about someone contracting some kind of STD while walking with their shoes off....REALLY, Horizon?! Really?
Btw......I gave you one extra star because I felt bad for room service the next morning.

THE BIGGEST JOKE EVER! I WALKED IN AND MY INITIAL REACTION WAS, "HAHA". It was completely bad to the point where I had to call in every hotel in the area and see if I can get a room but unfortunately everyone else is booked and this is the only hotel that has ALOT of room. Explains ALOT. First of, we got there and they charged us for 3 nights instead of 2. They tried fixing it but turns out they didn't cus the next morning when we checked our bank accts, they charged us more than what we're supposed to pay for. In hopes of trying to resolve the issue, it escalated more because the staff is very incompetent and ended up reversing the extra night but double charged our credit cards for the room. The staff wasn't even friendly or helpful to begin with. Lack of customer service, work ethics and very unprofessional. They were literally raising their voice and rolling their eyes instead of calmly trying to resolve the issue. I mean seriously? Whatever happened to good customer service? Obviously their staff needs to get retrained and learn some people skills. Now let's start with the rooms...Very dirty, dingy, and cheap. Carpets are soo nasty I'm scared to walk on it with my shoes off! And the beds are jus plain disgusting. Not to mention the bathroom! It's like they didn't even clean it well and thoroughly. I mean come on?! Pubic hair in the tub?! ughhh! The casinos are just plain sad. Its so empty and desolated. It makes me feel like I'm at the funeral cus it's so sad. The hostesses are old wrinkly ladies!
This whole place is just a tragedy itself. Very disappointing. Would never come back here. EVER! I'd rather spend extra dollars just to get a better place.

Ok first the good. It was cheap, under $40 after taxes on a Sunday night. For that I really did not expect much. Ok when I first walked into the Casino it looked like it was on its last leg, only slots and not many of them. Went up to the person working at the desk about noon and asked what time it would be ok to check in. She was very helpful and sent us up to our room right away. I was pleasantly surprised. It was very clean, good towels, clean bathroom, nice shower, and a decent view.
Now really there is no reason to hang out there at all unless you want to be bored silly playing slots by yourself. There is cheaper beer across the street and you will actually have someone to drink it with. It is in a great location and you can be at great casinos in a couple of minutes.
Now I almost gave this place 3 stars or 4 stars. It is not great but for the price it could be a tremendous deal. All of the workers I dealt with were great. The reason I gave it 2 stars is because of the thermostat and air conditioning. I simply cannot sleep if the room is hot. I could adjust the thermostat but getting the room below 79 was not possible. Not a problem if I could crack open the window but they are screwed shut. I basically slept an hour or two the whole night on rock hard old bed. I just simply could never go back if the room is like that. I did not hear the noise others have complained about but then I hardly saw anyone else on my floor.
If you can sleep well in a hot room and don't need anything too fancy this place might be ok but if you are like me and need a cool room then I would give this one a pass.
We booked this place, and then got on yelp to read about it... I was quite worried if there would be a catch or something would go wrong as we checked in.
But nothing of the sort happened. Sure, the casino area is sad, but if it's transferring ownership and there are 3 casinos right across the street, why can't people let it slide?
As a hotel it's decent. There's a Starbucks in the lobby, a cinema, and the pool area looked very nice (we didn't get to go into it though). The rooms are decent.
All in all this is a straightforward hotel; it's not rundown, but if you want your hotel as part of your traveling experience, book somewhere swankier. If you don't care about your room because you won't be spending all your time there, this is a great place. When you are tired from all the summer activities in Tahoe, and have a nice bed and a shower with great water pressure to go back to, this place delivers.
We reserved a double bed, nonsmoking room and stated that we would arrive late in the evening. To our surprise the room was given away and we were placed in a smoking room on the 3rd floor. HORRIBLE!! TERRIBLE!! DISGUSTING!! Stained carpet, dirty counters, thin walls, bed mattresses were indented from all the past users, sheets were dingy, and the phone didn't work. I tried working out the issue directly with the front desk person but was left standing in line waiting for the previous person to get their dilemma fixed.
I decided to return back to to the room and make a long distant call from my cell phone direct to the hotel to talk to someone at the front desk. This whole fiasco took a good hour or so to clear up and the whole mix up left us tired and irritated.
After explaining the situation and refusing to let my children sleep in a smoking environment, they did accommodate us and upgraded us to a jacuzzi suite on the 12th floor at no additional charge and included a roll away bed and refrigerator for free. This is the only reason why the Horizon received 2 stars instead of 1.
The $3.99 breakfast in the coffee shop is outstanding.
You get eggs cooked any style, sausage or bacon, potatoes, toast. Beverages extra. Served hot, fresh, and fast. The restaurant is immaculate and friendly. Definitely not crowded.
If you don't like waiting in line for the $4.99 breakfast special (includes coffee and OJ) at the Montbleau across the street, come over here and dig into this one.

In its current state, one star.
This property is owned by bankrupt Tropicana (also owner of the ugly blue and orange thing across the road).
The casino is a few slots spread out; the tables were all removed. When walking around, I counted more security guards than any other type of employee (I saw six security guards). The food service operaitons inside are operating on a limited basis for the most part. The hotel area just had one clerk working.
I understand the hotel has or is being sold to someone else, but it takes longer to transfer ownership of the casino due to license issues and the like. So as it stands, Tropicana is running the casino for the time being.
It is too bad because this was a legitimate and slightly cheaper than the rest property with a good mix of services (the movie theater is still open; so is the arcade though the arcade seemed to be missing some games...), okay (not great) food, and a decent overall atmosphere.
If you can get a cheap hotel room here, it is so easy to walk to the other 3 casinos, I say go for it; I would.
We went to breakfast/lunch at the restaurant since the buffet was closed and it was pretty good. Good service, fairly fast meal and the food was good. My son and I had the prime rib dip which was delicious and my husband had an omelet which he said was good also.

Meh. I've experienced better indeed. Spending New Year's in Tahoe is a time honored tradition and this year we went the budget route ($300/night) on strip. Where to begin: room not available at check in time, ended up taking a smoking room an hour after our check in time. During our stay the maid service didn't get to our room until about 5pm each day to clean/refresh towel supply. The staff was surly and let's be honest, not the sharpest tools in the shed. Now I get that the employment talent pool may be shallow for minimum wage positions and this is the 4th of 4 choices on strip, but there are certain levels of standards. Should it take 15 minutes per person to check into a room (others take 5-8 minutes tops)? The rooms are smaller than average, and showers are tiny - how are you supposed to have a threesome in there, honestly?
Positioned as the second rate hotel they meet the expectations of poor service, small rooms, low prices, and below average food & entertainment. None of our party will be back any time soon. Stay at your own risk.

I stayed here for b-day/snowboarding weekend for a friend. Her family got a room deal sent to them in the mail one room for $79 a night . They gave us the key... our mouths dropped open when we saw the room. It was a suite, complete with double beds, bar, and vanity area. We all ended up piling up in that room at the end of the night because it was too big for two. Definitely take advantage of the room deals if you can. You're still close enough to the action to walk to any of the other casinos if you chose.

I'm with my fellow Yelper Cindy! What's with all the bad reviews of this place? We had a great time here! We didn't stay overnight, but we had fun gambling! This place had a HUGE selection of penny slots, which is the best way to stretch your $. Off a couple bucks, we joined the Players Club, got $15 in free slot play, and all manged to play for quite some time! Not to mention the $2 coronas, which we only actually bought once since the kick-ass waitress kept feeding us free beers!
Granted this place is pretty much old people only, but who cares! That allowed us to be serenaded by the hilariously awesome Elvis impersonator!
Overall, we were definitely happy. Lots of beer, good slots with good returns, and Elvis! What else could you ask for?!

This place is the proverbial red-headed stepchild of Harrah's, but hey, I always had a thing for redheads.
Located near the other three casinos on the Cal-Neva border (Harrah's, Harvey's, and Montbleu), Horizon is undoubtedly the seediest of the larger establishments in Truckee, but it's probably also the best value. If you get what you pay for, and I paid $200 for a one night stay which included 2 adult full day lift tickets to Sierra...then I had that skanky hotel room coming to me (it wasn't THAT bad- clean enough, though it's the kind of place that clearly saw its glory days in the mid-80s).
The way I see it, if you're coming to Tahoe and spending more than one or two waking hours in your hotel room, then you're lame. Come to Tahoe to ski, or to go out and do other outdoorsy things (whatever one does in Tahoe in the summer, I'm not sure...roast S'mores?) , and grab a bargain on this seedy hotel room-- you'll save a ton by doing so. And then piss away your savings at Harrah's Craps tables across the street.
P.S.- Horizon is closer to Heavenly than Sierra (walking distance to the gondola, pretty much). If you're heading to Sierra, there's a shuttle, but it takes a good 30+ minutes to get there from Horizon.
I stayed here a few times, because it was cheap or free, available, convenient. Also, $400 for a night at harrah's is not the only option! haha. Horizon's not the cleanest hotel but hey... you get what you pay for.!! it's actually good enough although some of my friends complained...i wasn't really planning to spend more than a few hours there anyway.
Although i will probably never unless i was hella desperate, stay here again.. sowrie
The casino games downstairs are not my style. there is no pai-gow or baccarat but there is a game that i LOVE.. that i sat down for hours playing!!! a game where none of the big 4 casinos in tahoe didnt have!
THE SIGMA DERBY!! woohoo!!(I Think that's what its called) Basically, its a little machine with mechanical horses and race track that you can bet quarters on. it tells you the odds of the horses beforehand just like a real race track. lol. It's mostly senior citizens playing and it's kind of fun rooting with them!! felt a little odd at first, but by the 1st hour and a few drinks, i was screaming like a mad man with the 80 year old woman sitting next to me! Instead of losing money playing the table games, walk over to the sigma derby and have a great time. oh yeah, also MGM in vegas also has the horse machine and it's super fun there too!

My wife and I stayed here on a Saturday night and encountered the most DEPLORABLE customer service I've ever endured in my life!
We booked a room at $139 over the telephone. When we went to check out they charged us $179!!!!
We told the rude woman at the front desk that we were quoted $139. After she snapped her gum, rolled her eyes and refused to listen to us she went to get the manager.
The manager was a total jerk and had an ever worse attitude. We gave him our confirmation number, he looked it up on the computer and said...nope, it's "$179." He asked for proof...which I found insulting and then when i told him that i booked it over the phone and the confirmation number was my "proof"..he said "You don't have any proof, why should I believe you?"
I was shocked! I've never been insulted like that in my life...I'm still pissed from that treatment...What's $50 to a casino, just to make a customer happy? This speaks volumes about the treatment you'll get at this place. They care only about money!
To add insult to injury the bell hop, when I went to get our luggage and jackets...dropped our luggage to the floor and shoved my jacket at me...and because my arms were full trying to untangle my jacket...he tossed my wife's jacket on the counter...it slid off the counter and fell right on the dirty floor! I bent down to pick it up and he held out his hand insisting on a tip! I started to walk away and he rudely shouted "I stored that for you!" And, he followed me out the door giving me dirty looks the entire time!!!
I WILL NEVER STAY THERE AGAIN!
The casino sucks...and it was empty the whole weekend. Don't waste your money here...it's not even worth your time to look at the place from the outside!

Out of the big four casino-hotels in South Lake Tahoe/Stateline, Horizon is the bottom of the pack as far as accommodation, clubs, and restaurants. But some of my friends have had the best luck gambling there. Back in the day, I stayed there on many occasions because the Horizon usually has the best rates and availability. The lake and golf course views are great. Word of caution, they won't allow skis or snowboards in the rooms. I think they might offer a service downstairs to store them for a fee or you have to lock them in your vehicle, which can be nerve-racking. The hotel itself caters to the younger, partying demographic--especially in the far tower.
However, if you have babies or young kids, I would recommend you stay elsewhere. The past few years my husband and I have rented privately owned cabins in Tahoe. Not only are the rates comparable, but you get so much more for your money by renting a cabin. I don't think we'll ever stay at a hotel in Tahoe again. If I was going up with a group of friends or family, we'd probably just rent a large cabin -- so much more comfortable (and possibly even cheaper) than a dive casino hotel.
Tip: Sign up for the Players' Club and you'll instantly get discounts on the rooms, even if you never gamble with the Players' Club card. You can sign up for it online and probably reap the benefits instantly.
This place only gets four stars because I got dealt a straight flush at Three Card Poker there last summer. The $1.50 tacos from 4-8PM in the sports bar are delicious and definitely worth a trip if you don't feel like sitting down for dinner. They got $2 Coronas and a deal on Corona buckets also in the sports bar. Play the only Sigma Derby machine in Northern Nevada before they take it out for some more of their non-paying bullshit video slots. No, I'm not bitter. I'm just taking away a star for what happened on the Blazing 7's slot this past weekend.
The rooms are ok if you get the on the cheap. Off season that means no more than $59 during the week. The demise of the Horizon has been greatly exaggerated.
So we book our stay through http://AAA.com and because of some work issues, we had to change the dates of our stay. We were assured that the changes were made.
When we arrived at the receptionist desk, she said the changes were not made and we did not have reservations. I was too tired to get back in the car and drive to Harveys (which I should have done) and paid $225 instead of the $79.95 I had originally been quoted.
So you'd expect a nice room for $225 (by the way, this was this weekend...in September!!!). We had a bare, basics room, with wallpaper peeling off and cracked tile in the shower. And we also had a lovely view of the parking lot.
The casino was nice. Karen, the blackjack dealer, was very nice and explained the rules to me.
the 24-hour restaurant wasn't bad. The service was good, the food was good and the prices were not too high.
But I will never stay here again. Give me Harveys.

Why all the bad reviews people?
I recently stayed here for two nights. Yes, the hotel is older, and yeah... I did notice that it could use a remodel eventually but I'm not going to dock them a star for that. It was still clean, the staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Our room was huge and it overlooked the lake.
I am all about the $2 Coronas and $1.50 tacos! They have my Wizard of Oz video slot that I am hooked on, as well as various Monopoly ones that I like. The 24 hour coffee shop was very good. And it didn't take forever to get a table and our food.
I really don't have a bad thing to say about this place. It is a clean, fun place to stay in Tahoe without going over my budget. I would rather pay $100 less a night and use that money to gamble, shop, eat out, etc.
I would most definitely stay here again!

From 4pm-8pm Horizon offers 2 dollar Coronas and 1.50 tacos. This is what initially caught my eye but I had no idea the fun and excitement that Horizon had up its smokey, haggard. lackluster sleeve.
After walking the small casino floor and scoping out the taco set up (beef, pork and chicken!) we stumble upon a few people standing around an apparatus, about the size of a foos ball table. Upon closer inspection we see that it is a small mechanical horse track called Sigma Derby. It's 25 cents a bet and the odds show up on the digital displays. We put in 75 cents and immediately we are hooked. This is the best gambling experience I have ever had better even than my 21st birthday when my best friend won a few hundred dollars playing roulette at the now defunct Boardwalk on a 2 dollar table affording us room service the next morning.
As time goes on more and more people join the table. The guy across from us is Filipino with a heavy accent and he proceeds to yell at number 3, PUCK JEW WHITEY! number 3 being the only white pony out of the five. He's tapping on the glass and verbally prodding the tiny 4 inch horses and then we win, 95 credits and everyone on the table has won, save for the odd guy with the dark glasses who thinks his in Vegas at a high stakes Texas Hold Em table.
95 credits!
As we all cheer people at surrounding slots and tables look at us with a twinge of jealousy and sadness. We are the big winners! The cocktail waitress brings over our drinks that cost only the tip and I realize this dollar Corona is the best tasting beer I have had in long time, a million times better than the Guinness I had last week at Empire Tap Room in PA that cost me exactly 21 dollars.
We play for about two hours. We began with 10 dollars and we leave with 25, enough to cover the linner (read:lunch/dinner) we just ate and the cocktail waitresses tips. This is the best time I have ever had in a casino in my life.

Decent sized rooms and fits 4 uncomfortably. The double beds were okay as long as you don't mind elbowing your bedmate or accidentally/purposely (depending on how many shots you had) pressing any part of your anatomy against theirs. Horizon was pleasantly surprising. The website boasts an "awesomely cool casino" and pool/jacuzzi privileges, but I found one to be not so awesome and the jacuzzi was definitely overcrowded. I'm happy we brought plenty of alcohol to numb the pain of having to put up with bachelorette parties, singing elvis, beatles cover band, barely legal college boys and a greasy jacuzzi. 1 out of the 2 jacuzzies, had 2-10 year old kids w/inflatable alligators and squishy toys inappropriately sardined in.
After hanging out in our underwear, drinking, gambling and smoking cigars it was actually a pretty decent hotel to do it in. It was close to Mont Bleu, Harvey's and Harrah's which is pretty much what Lake Tahoe has to offer in the off season. I'd go back just because of its proximity to Heavenly.
We stayed here because the wedding that our son was the ringbearer at was held here. This is the first and last time this place gets any of my business. All I wanted was a clean room, and it was not clean at all, from the general shabbiness of the casino floor down to the ripped and stained bath towels. Oh and the fact that when my son spilled some of a bottle of water on the carpet and we put a towel down to soak up the spill, the towel came up brown. Ick.
The staff were just about the complete opposite of friendly, especially the front desk. The only exception being a few of the many security guards I encountered being sent to deal with issues not involving the casino floor (however, their almost constant-presence in the lobby and elevators did not make me feel any better).
The door to our room had a security plate around the lock that none of the other doors had, leading me to the conclusion that it had recently been kicked in (the plate still had some of the plastic wrap on it so I'm thinking it was pretty recently). It wouldn't have needed to have been too hard of a kick either since the door was thin enough for me to listen to every conversation of everyone in the hall up to 10 doors down.
Many of our party, including the groom and my parents, had to change rooms in the middle of their stay because the air systems in their rooms started pumping out hot air at full blast even while the system was set to cool. I also overheard at least 3 other parties with this complaint on my various trips through the lobby. Luckily for us, this didn't happen to our room until about an hour before we left so we were able to manage by opening the "window." I say "window" because it was really a sliding-glass door with a safety mechanism that only allowed it to open 3 inches. This is a good thing since it was a near 120 foot drop out the other side of the door. I hope the safety never fails. Luckily my 3 year old listens well and so understood not to play with the door. Other kids I know...
There were about 20 or so other nitpicks I had, suffice to say this place is total crap. Avoid at all costs. Luckily we were able to get our room rate adjusted down 3 separate times because of various problems and the fact that one of the wedding party got a room with no reservation for $40 cheaper a night than our reservation rate. Ugh, screw this place.
I'm a Hotwire whore. Unless I'm specifically staying at a Marriott - I don't care. I just want to go cheap. My Hotwire 3 star or better policy dealt us with the Horizon for this trip.
We arrived at the Horizon at 10:00 p.m. As I entered the lobby, I was almost knocked over by the heavy concentration of smoke.
We were assigned a room and headed up to the 10th floor. I clicked in the key opened the door and *whoosh* was hit in the face with an avalanche of hot air. The thermostat in the room read 78 degrees and it was in the "air" position. I dinked around with it for a minute and realized nothing but hot air was going to come out of the vents. I called down to the front desk and was informed that I should just turn it off because there was no "air" in the Winter. There's maybe a week left of "winter".
"We can have housekeeping bring you a fan."
wth?
Is this the Bedrock Inn?
A rapping at our door produced a very small and inefficient box fan.
We all had the sweats for the two days we stayed here. Taking a shower was terrible - it turned the entire room into a sauna.
The second night. I took a shower and opened the bathroom door. I was standing there buck naked, with my hair up in a towel trying desperately to cool off so I wouldn't have to get back into the shower. It was approx. 7:00 p.m. My husband and daughters were sitting on the beds watching TV.
Within a time frame of 3 seconds, I heard a rapid *knock, knock* on the hotel room door, a key go into the slot and a huge man hand at the end of a blue collar shirt come flying into the room as the door swung open.
I did a Jason Bourne style leap into the depths of the bathroom and slammed the door. I heard said stranger exclaim, "Oh, your door - can I close it?"
Yes and get the hell out of our room!
My husband said he looked like some type of maintenance man.
So strange.
Our room was no where near the elevators yet I could hear them non-stop. The beds were outdated to put it mildly. No in room coffee. They charge you $5.00 a day for a "resort" fee - their workout room was 4 treadmills and 2 stair type machines - no pool as it's winter. So for $5.00 we got a newspaper.
On the positive sides:
The room was very large and very clean.
The shower had great water pressure and temperature.
The view from our room of Lake Tahoe was stunning.
The valet was very friendly, quick and charming.
My daughter adored the arcade & midway games. Actually, I played the basketball version of skeeball for about an hour myself, shhhhh. I think it was our favorite part of the Horizon!

I gotta admit, it's kinda hard to write a fair review of this hotel because we stayed there during a storm, which basically precluded us from checking out any of its outdoor facilities or its sister property, the Mont Bleu. However, based on what I did see, I'll say this hotel merits a "kinda ok" rating.
The room is spacious but not particularly quiet, and my buddies and I agreed that the beds aren't the most comfy around. I've slept better at the Motel 6 down the road, and for considerably less money. The casino has no craps tables (blasphemy!) or much in the way of entertainment other than a little lounge area with a craptastic lounge band. No "hip" club or bar to speak of. The Starbucks charges $1.95 for the coffee that sells for $1.55 anywhere else on this planet (other than Vegas). The parking situation is okay but don't stay here if you expect to be able to walk from your room to the Heavenly gondola up the street; it's simply too far to drag a snowboard while wearing moon boots.
On the plus side, the buffet is reasonably priced ($16/person) and not bad quality, and the movie theater exhibits first-run flicks for your snowed-in viewing pleasure. The video arcade overcharges and their games aren't that well-maintained, but it's there if you need it. And... that's pretty much it.
Stay here if you must, but realize: If your goal is access to Heavenly, there are closer inns nearby; and if your goal is to casino it up, the neighboring properties are probably more modern and luxurious.
2 stars. Beware the toilet.

Arriving in Lake Tahoe on a completely spontaneous trip this past weekend I found myself looking for a hotel (with a casino) and was not interested in paying 350 dollars a night at Harvey's or Harrahs so I bit the bullet and agreed to pay 200 dollars for a smoking room with two double beds with the adjoining door between rooms and wouldn't you know it - a screaming baby next door.
The room was sort of clean minus the bathroom and the water damage on the wall and the broken table but all this could be forgiven because of the following: REAL PORN. Not made for Showtime, camera angle all wrong, no money shot. OH no we are talking about up close and personal shave that hoo-hoo cause Daddy's got a cheap ass hotel room tonight!!!
Hey screaming baby next door!!! What do you think of this? (Turns up volume on Teen Sex Camp 3). Oh we still wanna cry at 4am after I'm loaded on bourbon and endorphins from gambling how about some of this (Naughty Amateurs up on full volume). Hey BABY!!!!! You know what I'm looking at? REAL PORN!!!!
This is a horrible hotel that I will most likely stay in again.

If it weren't for the movie theater, then I would never walk in the door. I don't think I've ever won more than $5 in the casino... and the rooms are pretty much motel 6 style.
Has it gotten better since I stayed here 12 years ago? Do I care? Probably not, since my points are with Mont Bleu and the Harrahs places.

Believe the other yelpers if you want, but you get what you pay for, and this place is cheap.
Or, do you? Is it possible to get more? Well, maybe if they throw in pool access at their sister hotel, the Montbleu??? And, they do. And, it makes staying at a South Lake hotel that much more tolerable.
So, to recap: super low prices + access to the best pool in South Lake Tahoe = a good reason to book. Of the four hotels right over the Nevada border, this one is the steal.

My boyfriend and I stayed here for my cousin's wedding. I was skeptical, very skeptical, after reading the two reviews. My cousin was able to get a fabulous deal for her wedding guests so I knew I was going to have fun no matter what.
We were able to get the VIP treatment -- haven't quite figured out what that really got us aside from a separate check-in. Our room was on the 14th floor and had I known better I would have requested a lake view room. I'm sure the mountain view is pretty during the winter.
My cousin and her fiance got the Admiral's suite on the 14th floor that was enormous. It was bigger than some 1 bedrooms I've seen. Oh yeah wait - I'm reviewing my room.
Okay so based on the other two reviews:
YES, the place REEKS of SMOKE in the lobby and casino.
The room (king bed non smoking) was large enough...funny I think our room at Bill's Gamblin Hall & Saloon in Vegas was bigger.
The shower didn't work that well and there was no fan in the shower so you had to turn on the heat lamp to help reduce the steam.
There is a small workout room (didn't use) and the arcade - you can't take drinks in there! There is also a movie theater in the hotel.
Overall we had fun - when you travel in packs you always have fun plus winning at the tables never hurts!
Horizon is the Wal-Mart of casinos.
Everyone who works there is either old or mentally challenged in some way. The guests speak with a twang, wear a lot of flannel and stare at non-caucasians like they are animals at the zoo. They carry all the basic things that you might be looking for, but they display it in a barebones, no-frills kind of way.
You get a little less than what you pay for. If you've got high standards and require plush accommodations such as hot water and heat, don't stay here.
* PROS: buffet is cheap and tasty, good arcade, low minimums.

3.5 stars
First off I want to say that I didn't pay for the hotel nor the Heavenly skit lift tickets [btw its the worst place for snowboarders] SO! *impish grin* I can't say if its worth the price or not.
Pros: Movie theater shows the latest movies thats pretty cool. Has a matine price. Cable T.V. Place keeps me warm, I know it sounds odd but its cold outside k. The pool is pretty & has several pools for various types of ppl. Shallow pool for kids, jacuzzi and big pool. The arcade room rocks it has lots of new games and the prizes are awesome...that is if you can win them.
Cons: BUFFET SUCKS ASS! Don't bother going here even if you're hungry! Blankets & sheets are rough, bathroom small. Usually there is a sink partitioned from the toilet & shower so its more convenient for ppl. Service is nice, to me it is. My mom hated it. She said they were trying to rip her off. *shurgs* I wouldn't know.
All in all a supposedly cheap hotel thats convenient to get to Heavenly. WHICH I WILL NEVER GO TO AGAIN! Heavenly is not for snowboarders.

Despite Orbitz user warnings, we booked a room here for our 10th aniversary. We should have paid attention. Mediocre rooms with uncomfortable beds, mediocre food, and high-end minimum table-bets.
To their credit, the staff was friendly, and the bartenders make zombie-stiff drinks. That was the only redeming factor.
You can take your chance in going here. But just remember: in the end, the house always wins.

This place sucked big time! Only good thing was that we had a view of Heavenly from our room. That's it!
The pillows were hard and left my bf and I tossin and turnin the whole night. The room reeked of smoke! (I guess I shouldn't have expected better since it is a casino, but man, that was way too much smoke, and I seriously detest it!) Then to make it worse, the temperature in the room was always at a hot, stuffy 74F degrees no matter how many times we tried to lower it. So what's the result of all these problems?! Waking up about 5 times throughout the night and me getting my first nose bleed in years (due to the dryness of the room even though I guzzled bottles and bottles of propel) just as we were about to get on our first lift at Sierra!!
Needless to say, we're not coming back.
- 1 for the hideous decor and the trash it attracts
- 1 for their false claim of being a 'friendly' casino on their billboards
+4 for the diamond in the rough, 'Josh's Steakhouse', serves a mean filet mignon, halibut, salmon, one of the most fragrant, tangy caesar salads ever, and 5 star service.
11/7/07 update
The website mentioned free internet in the lobby but they didn't mention the firewall they have, I couldn't access the free internet.
Was in tower 2, quite a walk to it from the ballroom and it felt run down with water stains on the ceiling and some chaulking around the tub and worn carpet. Can see they are refurbishing the first tower, closest to the casino.

Attend a West coast swing dance competition here in November. http://www.michelledan...
Feels like an older hotel, 2.5 stars, the rooms are older, you take separate elevators depending on which towers you are staying at. The rooms feel spartan and old but clean. The parking lot is large and outside, you will have to walk to get to the lobby. Usually go in November, the last couple of years, haven't been able to check in early. Apples at the front desk. Convention rate of $82 on the weekend. It is quite a walk through the lobby and casino to get to the ballrooms and they don't have non smoking nor aromatherapy AC in the casino. So you smell smoky.
Restaurant is basic, why eat here when there are tons a good breakfast and lunch places nearby if you a have car.
But they have the movie theater http://www.yelp.com/bi... and the Starbucks coffee. http://www.yelp.com/bi...
Certainly better places to stay when you're up in the snow. The dealers aren't that friendly, and the place reeks like smoke and something else I'm not going to type. The worst part is I'm a smoker and the way this place stinks bothers me!
There also seems to be a much older and grumpier crowd here. Both fights I've seen in Tahoe happened here.
Nice place to hit and run on the tables, bad place to sit and grind it out.
3 stars because my friends came up BIG BIG BIG from the craps table.
The casino is kinda old and there weren't many table games. BUT Horizon has a Starbucks and a movie theater.
This place sucks major monkey balls. Came with a bunch of friends and you know how that can be. Everyone is rolling around on different schedules and you have to wait for everyone to be ready till you all leave and 3 hours later you all pile into 5 cars and still have yet to figure out where to go for dinner. By some cruel joke, we find our party of 15 at this horrible restaurant in the Horizon. I don't remember what it was called, but I DO remember that this place was just so wack, its reallly beyond words. I can't even find the right witty phase to explain it, so all i can say is that it SUCKS! i felt horrible for the old woman who should have been in her warm bed watching NIck at Night with a glass of milk, but instead was up serving our hungry/drunk asses at 10pm at night. i could tell she was trying her best to accomodate us and she was sweet, but daaaaamn, are we in the twilight zone? everything seemed to move in slow motion, it was just soooo wrong. The food took forever to get there and so everyone started getting super grumpy and one person literally fell asleep at the table (okay, we may have been drunk, but we were in TAHOE in a casino. that should be expected). The food lacked everything from presentation to flavor to reasonable prices. I could have went to Jack in the Box and felt better about my food and how much I paid for it.
This place is like a time warp in a casino where it actually feels like time stands still. Please don't come here unless you have an actual gun to your head. and even then, you might want to think twice. go out with some dignity and don't let that be your last meal.

This casino certainly does not have the luster that the other casinos in South Shore have; it seems old. As a result however, they are more relaxed in their comped drink policies and are somewhat looser in their winnings.
The casino loses one star for smelling like BO.
I had a really bad experience here- stayed for my birthday weekend in October. It was still hot, but the hotel had turned of the AC and there was no way to turn it back on. So basically we spent the night in a hot ass hotel room. They offered to give us a fan, then called back and said they ran out.
At check out the girl said she couldnt give us a discount because her boss wasnt there. Thats crap. How does a casino not have a manager on duty??? Anyways, she told us to call a few days later when a manager would be there. We call, the manager takes forever to return the phone call- then when she does she promises to comp our room. It never happend. she never returned our phone calls.....I wont be back!
