I've been meaning to try this place for awhile and when it hit Man vs Food fame, how could I not make a trip out here? I also didn't realize that this place was right around the corner from Granville Moore's and a 10 minute drive from Washington Hospital Center.
The choice was basically between 4 and 6 fish fillets. I should have gone six but the coward in me took over and I went 4. They throw it on two slices of wheat bread. I added fries and coleslaw for the sides. Honestly, the best way to enjoy this is by taking your fries and coleslaw and throwing that on top of the fish. Follow by adding the tartar sauce and hot sauce on top of that such that you end up with a big mound of food. Good stuff. The whole thing was 9.50 exactly. Granted, a regular person would probably be filled up by this, but I was still hungry, hence why I should have gone 6.
It's a takeout joint and even at 4 in the afternoon was pretty busy. You walk in and you're greeted by the owner. You get your food and go pay at the register, then you get out. They had a couple of cakes on display for dessert that looked pretty good. Parking isn't too bad to find in this area, street parking is usually available. The fried fish is pretty good, but I wouldn't make the drive from outside DC just for this. If you do happen to find yourself in the area for some reason, it's definitely worth checking out.
Really, really good fried fish, for really cheap (5.80 gets you an enormous portion). Not a place you'd want to eat very frequently, but if you're drunk or hungover, it's a great call.
My only regret is that I didn't put enough hot sauce on the fish - it's really tasty and not incredibly spicy.
If you're considering going to this place, you probably want a lot of greasy fish for a good price. If you want something else, clearly you should go somewhere else.
I really wanted to like this place, I did. Not only was it a block from my apartment, but I can definitely get behind some good greasiness and seediness every once in a while. I finally went after I caught Marc Ambinder tweet that H&D is "the best place you don't know about in DC" (yes, I just said tweet).
The result was somewhere between underwhelming and bad. I got the fish sandwich, of course. For the price I guess I really can't complain (and the staff were great), but it was really just some crappy, bony fish slapped between 2 slices of bread. If you're drunk and hungry I'm sure it suffices, just don't expect a life-changing meal.
I'm making this a part of my Friday routine with my coworkers..Fish-Fry-Fri. Eating the fish with the hot sauce is addicting, and for what you get, you just can't beat the price. Made everybody jealous walking into the office with bags of fried fish wafting through the halls. I don't even know what kinda fish it is, but it's very light and flaky. Great alternative to lunch around here.
I ate at Horace & Dickie's and I got the 4 pieces of fish, and I had enough fish for 3 meals! Their sweet potato dessert thingie was amazing - I woke up thinking about it....
I'd go back again.
HUGE FAN. I am not a huge fan of fish but I love their fried fish and the guys there will always make sure that you have left with your money's worth. The portions are huge. Their fried chicken is really good too. Unlike a lot of places, the people at this resturant fry the food RIGHT in front of you. You are not going to get a cold piece of fish or chicken that has been sitting around all night. This place is also opened really late (usually 2am) which is a huge plus. The rest of the late night spots to eat in this nieghborhood are chinese carryouts and TRUST, the food is nowhere as good.
P.S. THEIR HOT SAUCE IS AMAZING!!! Sometimes they give extra to you in small containers or you can pour it on before they wrap up your sandwich. Pour it on!! It is not incredible hot and it is a little bit sweet.
This place is worth a try if you are in the area and want CHEAP food.
First time I went here, my boss and I got lost around union station (we were hammered) and probably got laughed at by police for rounding the circle a few times. Once we got in and saw the row of fryers and stacks of fish, we knew what we had to do. Fish...lots of fish. and hot sauce. That was a great first experience. The most recent time I went was with some friends after the Roots concert. It made their night. Funny story: i run in to the store to get the goods and one of my friends comes with me. a minute later, one of my other boys walks in. he left his girl in the car. alone. she's a tiny asian girl. and the car was on. so we rush our orders and thank our saviors and as we are running out to the car, we notice the chick driving the car behind mine is a little asian chick staring nervously at her surroundings while clutching her steering wheel. so then we didnt feel as bad leaving asian girl #1 in the car alone. Until she locked us out. anyway, awesome fish. esp at 2 am. but after transporting, your car will smell like someone farted in a deep fryer. let that soak in...
Well as a resident washingtonian I am definitely familiar with H&D. The fish sandwich is really big and tastes pretty good especially smothered with hot sauce and ketchup, yup.. However, dont let it get cold or the grease will solidify the fish and make it hard, but you should be eating it right away anyway, I usually eat it in my car. The sides you can do without. The fish is whiting but thats why the price is right, I can deal with that, especially when I am broke. They have made enough money to move out of that hole in the wall, but sometimes if it aint broke dont fix it.
Beats Carolina Kitchen anyday.
This is one of those experiences that every person in DC should have at some point: You're in an area you're not entirely sure about, you're more than a little buzzed, and absolutely starving. Suddenly your worldly friends exclaim that you have stumbled upon a "DC institution! It has famous something or other! We should go there!"
I'll be the first to admit that it does not look like much. But I guess when you know what you're doing and you've been doing it a long time, the seediness becomes a legitimate part of the decor.
There are lots of other places in town where you can get a "Po' Boy" sandwich, but this is one of the better one's I've had. Gigantic filets of fish only lightly surrounded by wonderbread, smothered by hot sauce, and then wrapped in aluminum foil.
Long as you know what you're going for (a fried fish sandwich, no need to order anything else except maybe an order of fries), you will be pretty happy with what you get here.
A great value, which doesn't hurt, especially on an increasingly pricey H Street eating scene...
Remember to take cash with you!
Ok its not point loma seafood (see my other review) but it has an awesome character, great service, and the fish is tasty, especially late at night. Sorry if some of you invading the H street corridor want more of a restaurant "experience" but this place is the real deal. Also, look at the title its H&Ds Seafood CARRYOUT. Nuff said. Just watch the bones in the fish, use a bunch of hot sauce, and enjoy.
Horace & Dickie's is a breathtakingly romantic seafood restaurant that is perfect for a first date.
Oh, wait...
H&D's is a dive and proud of it. You walk in, wait for your turn to shout an order to the people behind the counter, and wait for your food with everyone else. Expect a cast of characters waiting along with you. You can order fried chicken, but I can honestly say I've only seen one person ever order it. There's usually a bin of it already cooked and hanging out. On the other hand, they can't fry the whiting fast enough to keep up with orders. This is what you want.
A "fish sandwich" consists of several (I've received anywhere from 4 to 6) filets fresh from the fryer tossed on a few pieces of bread. Squeeze bottles of hot sauce and mustard are on the counter for you to smother the lot of it. Generic tasting tartar sauce (Sysco?) comes in little tubs with your order. Is it all a bit fishy tasting? Yes. Will it taste as good if you let it cool down? Not at all. Can you stuff your face for dirt cheap and be very happy? Oh INDEED. If you end up on H this should be considered a real viable option, either at the beginning or end of your night.
Nothing special but if you are into seafood and like fresh cooked fish and seafood items. This is the place, it is small but stays packed. The prices are justified and portions for the fish sandwiches are reasonable. The staff is friendly and helpful the menu choices are minimal and just for fish and seafood.
Cheap and damn good. My girl and I split a fish sandwich and side of fries the other night and it was plenty to fill us up. At first I wished for some outdoor seating, but really - what's wrong with sitting down on the curb?
Everyone inside was friendly from the get-go. From a big welcome, to helping out as I apparently looked confused, to the big goodbye and take care as we left. The only good thing about the Atlas district getting packed is that I know Horace & Dickie's will get a ton of business and continue to satisfy my fried fish cravings.
Go once for the authentic H St experience. Even the fries suck.
2.25 stars. Horace & Dickie's is becoming somewhat legendary for providing a great late night option for residents of NE DC, specifically for fried fish. It is possible I ordered wrong; I went with the fish sandwich, but given that I despise whiting, it wasn't necessarily the smartest order for me (they only serve this particular type of fish). It is certainly possible that I would make a return visit to try the crabcakes or the fried chicken.
As for the particulars of my order, the fish sandwich was indeed gargantuan, yet it used the aforementioned bland whiting dusted with a boring cornmeal coating on two pieces of white bread that in no way, shape, or form held together the sandwich. I get that the point is that it is a price-friendly option that provides a strong level of sustenance, but I simply find other types of late night food (such as the falafel sandwich at Amsterdam Falafel) to be more desirable.
Basically, if you enjoy whiting or if you highly favor quantity over quality, there is a strong possibility that you will indeed love this spot. If not, it might be advisable to wait until you get home before you grab something to eat.
I'm curious what all the buzz about this place is? Is it because it is in Tyler Cowen's Ethnic Dining Guide? My impression was that it was your typical run-of-the-mill Fried Fish shop that is ever popular in many less economically developed parts of the city. Whiting is not a very high quality fish, and just because they give you five pieces of it doesn't make it better. They also employ the refry method of serving the fish hot when you order...they cook a batch, and then when you show up (who knows how much later), they drop the fish back in the oil to heat it up...overcooking it. I doubt they do that when it's busy, but it really lessens the quality of a low-quality fish.
The folks running the place seem friendly enough. The menu is short enough that it shouldn't phase anyone trying to figure out what to order. 1.5 stars rounded to 2.
Oh my gosh the BEST fish sammich that I have had in D,C. in YEARS! The prices are GREAT! The tartar sauce is awful ( I get extra take it home and add my own ingredients :-))
I found out by accident that they are open SUPER late....needless to say, no more late night diners for me!
Back before I owned a bicycle, this was my idea of an expedition. The fried fish here is excellent. The sides are nothing extraordinary, but if you load up on the comically priced condiments, it won't matter.
I once heard a counterwoman who probably weighed 350 lbs rebuke a man who tried to order bean pie: "you can't have that, you're too fat."
I mean.....did you read the last review...they haven't disappointed this time either :)
I love the cooks, cashier and the food all the same......and so does many others......
If you haven't tried it you better ask someone for directions....or better yet Google It

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE, LOVE, LOVE THIS PLACE.

Horace & Dickie's must be the best dive in DC. They're open late. Eating on the curb is totally normal. The food is cheap, good, plentiful, and heart attack inducing. Frankly, they might be the best greasy spoon in the country. They're definitely in the running.
There's only a few things on the menu. Fish dinner, fish sandwich, crabcake, and fried chicken. I'd say go with the fish sandwich. The fillets are not very thick, but they're fresh and gloriously deep fried. Oh, and they give you 4, FOUR fish fillets to go on your sandwich. Each one's worthy of it's own bun. It's worth buying just to see: a pile of fish fillets smooshed between two dinky slices of wonder bread. I take 3 off, add the tarter and hot sauce to what's left, the use more bread at home to make the rest of the fish into more sandwiches. One sandwich should feed 2-3 people without much problem. The side dishes are your basic summer fare: French fries, slaw, potato salad, etc. The ones I've had have been decent. Nothing to write home about, but for under $2 each, they hit the spot.
I have enjoyed fish prepared many ways - grilled, broiled, sauteed, "blackened", and smoked. But I have to say I love it best fried - and Horace and Dickie's knows how to fry some fish.
They use whiting which is nothing fancy but a decent seafood (ie, not farmed). It comes out hot and crispy and it never sits for long, as there is almost always a line for sandwiches. A sandwich includes four pieces of fish (or more) and is enough for two unless you're super hungry. The sides I have tried are nothing special, although some greens provide a nice complement to the fish.
This place is an institution on H Street and I appreciate it more and more every time a fancy new restaurant opens. Our new places have some great food but the vibe can be kind of precious. At Horace and Dickie's you just get great fried fish.
Let's just say I blew by Kwame Brown to get in line for dinner.
I was wandering through my new neighborhood looking for something cheap to eat when I noticed a shack off H St with a line (evidence of abundant local flair) out the door. Having lived in similar neighorboods in other cities, I knew I had found something special.
The line is bit quicker than it may seem. It took about seven minutes to get in and out and only took so long bc of the line.
I did as the locals did and ordered myself a fish sandwich (but chose wheat rather than the locally-favored white bread) and personally doused the ridiculous amount of fried fish (5 very large pieces) in the provided hot sauce. The guy behind the counter muttered something at me so I just nodded and was given some tartar sauce. I also got some fries. My total was about $7 for a meal I knew I could not, ney should not finish.
I took the food home (no seating unless you count the curb) and stuffed my face. The fries are very forgettable, but the fish was pretty fantastic. AND SO MUCH OF IT! The fish sandwich alone is one of the better deals I know of (only about $5) and is delicious. This spot could be your very heavy dinner or an exceptional late-nite decision.
My favorite fried fish carryout in all of Washington, DC, hands down! I can't recommend it enough. The price is right and the food has the right amount of grease for a an unhealthy evening of eating. The service is cool and funny at times. Try the bean pie, too.
One warning, if the joint is empty of customers the food tends to be stale. Its best when the line is out the door.
Yes yes yes yes yes.
This was one of the best non-fancy dining experiences ever in D.C. Besides the giant, giant sandwich, deliciously fried, we had the pleasure of watching a man methodically flour hundreds of fillets before dumping them all in a big vat of oil. Two minutes later, that fish was in my styrofoam carry out container, covered in hot sauce, and I was in heaven.
a giant sandwich=$5.80=wallet happy, stomach full for days.
only downside: the sides we had, mac and cheese and fries, were both subpar. Skip 'em, and load up on fish. You won't need to eat anything else.
H&D's is an interesting place for me to right about. I mean, essentially, they take some pieces of fish, cover them in batter, throw them in a fryer than drop those on a couple pieces of bread. This is a sandwich. There's some hot sauce and ketchup available should you want them. And you do. It's not terrible flavorful or fancy, but it's quite cheap and filling, especially mid-drink. It's cooked well, definitely not over or underdone, and the service is friendly enough. I guess it's drunk food, and good at it. Most importantly: FISH GOES IN FACEHOLE.
oh wow, this place was quite a delight. Cheap food and friendly service is what you can expect from this place. stumbled upon this place late-night so that's also a plus. 4 stars baby.
Sometimes the live entertainment here is worth the money alone, and then the food is so good. You get your own person who will make your order for you, and my boyfriend jokes with the guy making it that i like too much salt. I always get the shrimp, he gets the fish. He thinks I am crazy for getting the shrimp, but trust me, it's good. the fries are soo good too. We live five blocks from there, it's like honestly the closest place to even buy a meal to our house. But I'd rather live out there on the Hill than live in NW and eat at snotty eateries.
This place is DC, the undiscovered Ben's Chili Bowl of seafood. I am surprised Obama hasn't eaten here yet, as if they already don't get enough business.
Once a guy asked them 'what kind of fish is that?' and the guy behind the counter smiled and said 'fried!'
My mother used to take me here when I was like 15 and we lived out in the suburbs. She used to joke that it's always the shack in the worst neighborhood that has the best fried fish. Since then, I've moved into the district and always wondered where that little shack of heavenly fried fish was.
This weekend I happened to be in the atlas district area, parked my car, and was walking the 2 blocks to Palace of Wonders when I stopped and started smelling the air like a dog. I looked to my left and saw a little house with a line of people flowing out and down the street. Looked up at the sign, lo and behold, fricking "horace and dickies"!!!!
I called my mom right there and told her where I was. She was happy about my find but wanted to know what I was doing "out there" at night by myself. I explained that it's kinda different now.
5 hours later at 1:30am I busted around the corner and into Horace and Dickie's to get my fish sandwich. GODANG it's still so good. 2 pieces of wonder bread and 5 large pieces of crispy and tender whiting on top with hot sauce and tarter. MMMMMMMM!
And they're open every night until 2am, except Sundays. Take out only. You better GIT your fish sandwich.
This is the definition of a carryout. I love this place because the fish is very good. It's crispy and they give you a lot. The sides are good as well. There is no seating you just take your food to go.
The upsides:
- The fried fish. My husband and my friend both loved it. They said it was quality fish, with not too many bones, and lots of fish for the price (under $5). In fact it looked and smelled so irresistible that I cheated on my vegetarianism and had some myself. I'm no fish expert but damn, that deep-fried crispy salty goodness made me happy.
- It was open till 2am last night (a Saturday).
The downsides:
- The mac and cheese was a little mushier than I like. My friend agreed, saying it was "fine, but not orgasmic."
- They were out of potato salad, and nearly out of fried chicken (To be fair, we did come pretty late in the evening).
- This is a takeout joint - there's no place to sit.
- My husband's fried fish sandwich wasn't really a sandwich - it was just two Wonderbread slices with tons of fish on top. My husband's theory is that the bread's purpose is not to be eaten but rather to soak up grease.
- The credit card machine was broken (the food was so cheap you probably won't need it anyway)
Well, I tried the Chicken and YUM! Proper boozed after a show at Palace of Wonders, I rolled in there and grabbed some of the fried chicken on my way home. Really hit the spot, settling in nicely on top of all that rail gin. They totally deserve the extra star.

Take the food and go since there is zero seating. Sometimes I find myself needing a fried fish fix Horace and Dickie's would be the place to go. Love the sides and the fish is fried perfect. Fried fish, 2 slices of bread, fries, mac and cheese and hot sauce. Don't forget the hot sauce.
The constant line out the door late at night is impressive advertising. I guess it went fairly quickly. Was it worth it for a basket of greasy fried fish and slabs of bread? Well, probably! I was in such an impatient rush, though, that I just ate as I walked, no utensils and no sauces. So I'm sure it'll be even better next time when I take it home, sit down, and properly savor it.
i guess you can put anything between 2 pieces of bread to eat and it becomes a sandwich right? the biggest fish sandwich (if u wanna call it that) under 5 bux was purchased here. I went and grabbed one during a street festival and enjoyed it immensely. the fish was top-notch. I didn't particulay care for the mac-n-cheese it was bland and almost runny. But i guess the fish sandwich is a draw. Get your fried fish fix here.
Just get a fish sandwich and don't worry about the sides. Fish is fried perfectly and they even have wheat bread. The people are friendly as hell and if you're waiting in line I'm sure you'll talk to someone interesting. Prices are great for the amount of food that you get. Best damned fried fish in the urea! Again, don't bother with the sides. Oh, this is a carryout.
Ok, nevermind I take that back. I left the neighborhood a few years back well before it was considered "up and coming", so I now I see it's packed with a diverse crowd. no more scared newbies..

So, I'm sitting on the curb late last Saturday night with two friends having one of those moments that I wish I could bottle and re-live again and again. The weather was unseasonably warm for January (don't let's spoil it with doomsday thoughts of WHY it was so warm), I was with two delightful friends, we had just hit some of DCs funkiest galleries and bars and to cap the night we were hoovering down fish sandwiches from Horace & Dickie's carry-out (Carry-out only. That's why we were sittin' on the curb!) Man, oh man is that stuff goooood. You pull off a chunk of steamy fried white fish, a little hot sauce, a dip in the tartar sauce and it's heaven on earth! A genial man in a cool fedora pulled up next to us in his old sedan, rolled down the window and said, "Stay where you are - y'all look so comfortable!" We were. The use of the word "sandwich" is loose: it's a generous pile of about 6 pieces of tender fish sitting on top of two slices of Wonder bread. Don't forget to eat the bread. As my friend Ricky said, it soaks in all the hot sauce and grease. Yum! Oh, and the guy at the counter was fast with the service and quick with a charming grin! I can't wait to go back.........
this is as much of a local institution as you will get in DC. for those who don't think fried whiting on white is worthy of their time, they have never had it from horace and dickie's. they do local cuisine right.
