A Utah Brewpub? Talk about oxymorons...

Hoppers Brewpub is an average run of the mill American type casual restaurant, which are pretty much ubiquitous here in the great Salt Lake region. People aren't coming from around the world to SLC for the cuisine! Skiing, yes. Food, er uh, NO!

My business associates, the poor suckers, had to relocate from the Rose City, Portland, to come here. No more fresh seafood, dozens of micro breweries, fresh berries, Rose festivals, Sushi and Pho, the most strip joints per capita. Nope, they traded all that in for skiing, the Tabernacle Choir,  bland food, and memberships to bars serving 3.2 beer.  Oh well. You go where the jobs are.

This place tries to be inventive. Turkey cranberry wrap ($8.49); Turkey Dip (instead of the Roast Beef Dip, $6.99) both served with fries. Cobb Salad, $8.99. Diet Pepsi, $2.29.  Not much to talk about. Service was ok. Atmosphere ok. Oh, this is one of the few places in Utah you can get a pitcher of beer.

You don't have to be a "member" of a club/bar to drink beer in Utah. You just have to order food with it. Wine and beer only. If you want hard liquor, you have to join a "club" and pay a fee, which probably goes straight to the government, which is run by the church. And you can't order a double, that will be served as a single and another single on the side.

And if you want to go to a liquor store and grab a 6-pack, like Joe 6-pack and Sarah Palin like to do? It will cost you double what you pay in most states. A  6-pack of Corona? $13.95! (Well we can't encourage more Mexicans in Utah! We're not Colorado!)  I think the extra goes to the government, too, which goes to the......well you get the picture now.

Coming from Idaho, we appreciate breweries, good beer and greasy delicious food.  So we thought Hoppers sounded decent for lunch.  As it was before work, we didn't get to try any of the beers.  Not that we're missing much with the 3.2 alcohol content anyway...from the looks of the menu, the food sounded tasty.  It was somewhat bland though.  I expected some good seasoned fries with my burger but no.  I guess Utah needs to work on its brew pubs a bit...nice atmosphere though.

Hopper's used to be a four-star regular in our dining experience. We liked several things in the menu and since we don't drink, the Artisan brewed sodas were quite up our alley. (Though we've never forgiven them for cutting Fred and Ginger Ale off the menu.)

However, with the recent firing of the the executive chef in a bit of restaurant politics, the loss of some excellent staff, the place had gone from 'we eat there twice a month' to 'we haven't been BACK for months'.  The new menu is boring and uninspired, everything we loved to eat taken off it, and since then, we just haven't wanted to go back.

Now, I understand a guy's gotta each, but firing your perfectly good exec chef to give a pal a job? To attempt to 'family friendly' up the menu so you can get more kid traffic? This is what's going to drive all it's former patrons out the door... and possibly kill Hopper's dead.  All because the guy who owns all the Sizzler's and Red Robins in the valley ALSO happens to own Hopper's-- and is now trying to consolidate the image. Failure is imminent -- or has already happened, if the meu's change up is a clue.

It's a shame. My fiance and I have some really fond memories of dinner and the twice-baked cookie... but if there's nothing but cardboard cutouts of Sizzler's menu in the offering -- guess what? We'll go elsewhere. We don't eat at chain restaurants for a reason! We don't want chain restaurant food!

How do you mess up mac and cheese?! Bland awful nasty waste of $8. Good service. Lame food. Save you cash. Skip this place.

Some of the most average to below average beer I've ever had, and the fact that it's all Utah 3.2 beer isn't helping things.  Hoppers is essentially a seafood brewpub, with not a lot on the menu other than seafood items.  Fried zucchini is fairly good here, but otherwise I can't recommend much.  Music is too loud.

Why do some restaurants insist on playing loud music?  This place has good food that is fairly priced. The beer is good. They have a convenient location. The staff is nice. If they just turned the music down it would be an enjoyable experience.

My wife loves the fish (halibut)  and chips.  The beer and burgers are also good.

I'll give 3 Stars for the beverages.  The beers brewed there are good.  And we even like it Root Beer & Cream Sodas too!
The food is average- and only gets 2 Stars.  The claim chowder is pasty, the bread is so thick on the sandwiches it smothers the rest of the ingredients, and the fish & chips - the fish was dry and 'fishy' tasting.  Bread pudding is good dessert.
The staff tries hard, and are friendly.
