We adopted both of our dogs from Hopalong.  We always knew that we wanted two dogs.  When we got our first dog, Boomer, they were very helpful with advice on getting one dog first, training, and then getting the second so the first one can help with the training.  They were right on!

Seven months later, when we felt we were ready to get our second dog, we reached out to them again.  Within a few days, they actually came to us with Tippy, who we fostered until she was old enough to adopt.

The overall experience was great!  The staff was very helpful and the dogs were very well cared for in their foster homes.  We couldn't have asked for better!

2 months ago, we adopted a Jack Russell Mix from Hopalong Animal Rescue. The organization was very professional and quick to respond. We submitted an application during the week and were able to meet with the dog over the weekend.

When I first laid eyes on 6 month old Jack Russell mix Sailor, I fell in love! He is the sweetest dog there ever is. We re-named him Cookies because he reminds us of Cookies N Cream. (He is all white with black spots all over his body.) We were happy to learn that Cookies is a healthy puppy, as Hopalong provided us with his medical background.

Since having Cookies in our lives, these past couple months have been filled with so much love and joy. He is extremely mellow for a Jack Russell; he loves sitting on the couch and watching tv with us. I am forever grateful to Hopalong for giving us the most wonderful dog in the whole world! I would definetely recommend this organization to ANYONE who is interested in adopting a lifelong friend. Thank you!

Two out of my four dogs are from Hopalong Animal Rescue.  Norman we adopted in March 2007 and Lola we recently adopted in April 2009.  Norman is a Yorkshire terrier who is about ten years old and Lola is a Poodle/Terrier mix who is 5 months old.

My husband and I learned about Hopalong Animal Rescue from a friend who lives in Fremont, CA.  Since we live in Southern California, the commute to go through the application process was a daunting thought.  After speaking with Christina, who works at Hopalong, we grew a strong relationship with Christina as well as the other employees and volunteers and felt it would be well worth the time we would need to invest.  So one weekend, we got in the car and drove to see the animals they had available and began the application process.

In March of 2007 we were introduced to Norman, a Yorkshire terrier who was found on the streets.  Norman's history was unknown and his body showed years of neglect and abuse.  He had been shot with a bee bee gun and the bullets still remain in his abdomen, all but 8 of his teeth had fallen out and he is losing his eye sight due to an extreme case of cataracts.  Many animal rescues would have disregarded Norman because he is not an ideal candidate for adoption.  But Hopalong saw a spirit that was within Norman and introduced him to me.  I immediately fell in love with Norman and our story together began in March and continues to flourish.  He was accepted into our family with open paws by our other two animals and they are all extremely happy together.

In April of 2009, we were looking on the Hopalong website and saw a poodle/terrier mix litter had been posted.  We quickly filled out the application and hoped for the best.  Since we continued to communicate with Hopalong over the years, keeping them updated on Norman, they were thrilled to see that we were one of the first applicants interested in the new litter.  Once the puppies were available and our application was accepted, we made the drive back up to Oakland and picked up the newest member of out family, Lola.  Lola is the most amazing little spirit I have ever met.  She is so smart, well behaved and she has far surpassed the expectations I had for a 5 month old puppy.  She continues to grow and mature and has already bonded with the other dogs.  Though she is the only girl within my pack, she is already running the house!

I can't imagine my life without my dogs and I would like to thank Hopalong for changing my life and providing us with such fantastic companions.  We are forever indebt to you and your wonderful staff!

I adopted my german shepherd mix , Kenya just 2 days ago from Hopalong. I cannot begin to tell you how happy I am with her. She hasnt whined once, barked or had accidents inside the house. I am crate training her and so was her foster family. she loves her crate! and she is so sweet . we are a perfect pair. I want to thank hopalong for having such great foster parents for Kenya. I feel like they did alot of work on her because she is very well trained for a 3 month old. I would recommend you try Hopalong Rescue, and rescue a pet instead of buying form a breeder. Hopalong had her microchipped, spayed and only 2 more shots to go. they also gave me toys and two collars ! Erica was very nice

I am a huge fan of Hopalong!  I adopted my adorable resuce kittens from them in May of this year.  A house is not a home (for me) without a pet, so one of the first things I did when I moved to Oakland was to check out animal rescue orgs.  I was impressed by their clear devotion to helping pets  - their Second Chance program and desire to find loving homes for ALL cats and dogs is great.

The screening process was simple and thorough enough to know they are professional but not so obsessive I felt as though I were getting an FBI check (believe me, it's a delicate balance).  I perused the kitten pictures online, and then went to a mobile adoption event at Paws on Piedmont.

When I got there, I could tell the kittens were obviously well taken care of - sociable, cuddly, well-fed, and healthy.  The woman there was able to tell me about the mama cat, their general temperment, etc.  She was kind enough to ask questions to be sure I knew what I was getting into with one rambunctious little guy (I am an experienced cat mom).

Overall, the experience was pleasant and organized.  They were already neutered and chipped, and I got the vet records in the mail pretty quickly.

Thanks Hopalong for bringing Smokey & The Bandit into my life!  I'll be a regular contributor to you from now on, and hopefully someday will have time to volunteer!  People often comment on how friendly my kittens are, as well as how healthy they seem.  While I'd love to take all the credit, with rescue kittens I know that has a lot to do with how Hopalong took care of them before I got the little guys.

My beloved kitty passed away a couple of months ago, and my life became empty.

While walking through PetSmart one day in Albany, I found a beautiful 1 year old female cat. I fell in love immediately. She's adorable, loving, cuddly, talkative, and active.

I'd kept my eye on her for a few weeks, and then I finally filled out an application. I received a phone call 4 days later from Hopalong, and I arranged to pick up the kitty that night.

That night was tonight. I'd had a miserable weekend. I'd been in severe dental pain all weekend. I had a cracked tooth and needed 2 root canals, all of which were done today.

I also got my new kitty today, which has made me smile.

She immediately adapted to the home, and has spent hours in my lap purring and licking.

Thank you hopalong.

I have been fostering dogs for Hopalong for about a year now. The staff has always been super helpful and patient with my questions and concerns. Most of the dogs that I have fostered have been surprisingly healthy, considering they are coming from over crowded shelters. On the rare occasion that one of my foster dogs became sick, the staff was quick to check out the dog and get them into the vet when needed. My own dogs have always been very healthy and have never contracted anything from any foster dog. They also seem to enjoy the extra company and play sessions that a new (often younger) dog brings to their pack. I have really enjoyed each foster dog that Hopalong has brought into my life and I am so grateful for the wonderful work that they are doing.

We have fostered both cats and dogs for Hopalong!  The staff is passionate and very knowledgeable about animals.  All of our foster animals have received amazing care from their team of vets.  Of course, there are always random things that come up - these are shelter animals! - but all 100+ of our fosters have ended up happy, healthy and in great "forever" homes.  Love them!

Thank you Hopalong!! This is the second cat we have adopted through this agency and all I can say is they take their pet adoptions seriously. Both times, I was able to ask questions that the foster parent answered honestly and truthfully--like what types of toys the cat likes. Hopalong is the humane answer to getting a kitty (they have dogs too) a good home.

Hopalong is awesome!  Their animals live in foster homes, so you know what you are getting when you adopt from them.  You have a much better idea of how a dog is going to behave; a breeder will tell you anything you want to hear just to sell you a dog.  We adopted a hound almost two years ago and the process was thorough, yet easy.  Our dog was house/crate trained, well-mannered and socialized.  He was neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.  I would adopt another dog from Hopalong if we didn't also have a baby.  They also provide low-cost training help and follow-up.
Please don't buy animals from breeders.  Adopt an animal and save a life.

They save animals.  They are mostly volunteers. What's not to like?

Great Staff, Great animals, great trainers, and they take animals out of Oakland Animal Control (who are great too).

Please support them.

These folks are angels. They saved Clare, our Redbone Coonhound we adopted 9 years ago, off the steps of the Solano County animal shelter. She was skinny and scared. They nursed her back to health. They showed great care when releasing her to us and checked with us a few days after to check progress. This dog is the sweetest dog we've ever had. Even if you don't want the responsibility of a pet, give anything to these folks. Their wishlist is under the donate section of their website.

We adopted our latest kitty, Tiny Little, from Hopalong.  Our vet, Thornhill Pet Hospital, regularly showcases kitties or puppies from Hopalong.  Lots of other vets in Oakland do the same thing, all through their relationship with Hopalong.  It's a great way to get these little creatures out there so folks can check them out and adopt them.

Hopalong also has mobile adoptions at several places in the east bay each weekend - you can check the schedule at http://hopalong.org.

Check them out!

These people are great.  I got my dog from them.  I asked if he was housebroken.  They said yes.  I brought him home and he pissed all over my floor.  One time deal.  All is forgiven.  The paperwork was expedited in a timely fashion, and everything worked out well.  BTW, your pets are not kids.  Love them, but do not get overly cute about it.  That's annoying.  They are their own creatures, so don't be another sterile yuppie who thinks they are part of your family tree.

Hopalong took my kitty to the library.  She's a studious cat.  I went for books, left with a little white furball.  Who needs books?

My husband and I are fostering a dog from this awesome agency.  They approved us quickly, found a perfect match for our lifestyle, and they have been VERY helpful throughout the process, from housetraining to health questions.  We "shopped" around, so to speak, before choosing Hopalong to work with...other rescues, although doing wonderful work, simply didn't seem to have the time to talk with us and make us feel like we were part of a team.  Anyway, thanks Hopalong.  You guys rock!

i will be forever grateful they rescued my beautiful kitty from the shelter and let me adopt her! however, i do have one caveat - i found them to be a bit disorganized and hard to get in touch with. multiple phone calls and emails were not returned and i didn't get my adoption packet and vet records until after i badgered them several times. of course it was a little trickier since i was doing it all online instead of going into the office in person. if you're in the same situation, don't give up! even after my difficulties communicating with them, i wouldn't hesitate to adopt from hopalong again and i am very glad they exist!

I can't think of enough nice things to say about this place. They have a great staff that are 100% compassionate about animals. Our experience with Hopalong began as a foster "mom" a few years ago. We had wanted a kitten and were suggested by Hopalong to think about fostering a new mom and her kittens since it would be a win win situation for all. The kittens  and mom had been in an animal shelter and would have been killed if Hopalong didn't take them since the kittens would not be able to be adopted for weeks until they were old enough to be spayed and that means less space for cats that can be adopted. Well, we said yes and it ruled. Hopalong hooked us up with everything we needed, as we were new at the whole cat thing. Well, we ended up keeping the baby mama and love her to death. She is awesome. Plus we learned about the awesome Thornhill Pet hospital that has treated our cat with amazing service. Thank you Hopalong.
