We had just eaten a bit before but we still came in nonetheless. Despite not being super hungry we had to sample some dim sum. We were not disappointed.

We only had beef cheung fun, potato nest taro, beef balls and tofu wrapped meat. All of them were excellent. Very tasty and cheap.

The service was fast and efficient. Loved this place. It's more old school in design and you have to be a small person to use the restroom!!!

came here on a whim with my boyfriend for a rainy Sunday brunch.

    SETTING:
the place is smaller than it's popular counterparts [Jing Fong / Golden Unicorn]. booths are against both the side walls & large round tables are in the middle for sharing. im surprised the carts had enough space to roll around!

    FOOD:
    chicken feet: MEH.
    pork spareribs in garlic: MEH.
    roast pork bun: YES.
    beef ball: NOPE.
    steamed pork dumplings: YES.
    beef rice rolls: MEH.
    turnip cake: MEH.
    egg custard: MEH.
bowl of wonton noodle sou: MEH.

as you can clearly see, a good amount of the food from here is just okay. not enough for me to go back every though it's super cheap.

    SERVICE/PRICE:
service is fast, everyone is super helpful & they try their best to explain the dishes that you're unfamiliar with. we got so much food & everything came out to $21! insane. but honestly, i would rather go to the Unicorn than come back here.

    xoxo

This is a yummy and cheap place to eat. Four of us ate like royalty and walked out with a $27 bill!

We went on a Friday afternoon, so there were mostly older Chinese patrons. Almost all the tables were big round ones, and they sat us with a nice couple. The carts came out slowly, and they stopped at tables while they were on the way to deliver the goods to the cases in the front. I assume they do a good amount of takeout? I couldn't tell why they had the cases up front. Maybe they store the food there until someone orders it?

I would definitely recommend this place.

This is an update to my previous reviews. I was here recently and have discovered that all dim sum now range from $1.75 to $2.50 and more for "special" dim sum. I love the fact that they have lowered prices to remain competitive. Some dim sum here are very "home style" like the chicken feet and the steamed spare ribs, which differentiate Hop Shing from other places. Because of their famous baked Char Siu Bao, their rating remains at 4 stars!

You need to Hoppity Hop Hop over to Hop Shing because it is the Best DIM SUM Place in Chinatown!

One thing that you MUST know about this place...Roasted Pork Buns. Period.

This delicious Chinese Dim Sum place makes everything to order, on the spot, and fresh! Ok you may say a lot of other places do as well, but they do it.....WELL! lol. I would give three guidelines to this place when visiting.

    1) Order the Roasted Pork Buns
(Other staple foods aren't bad either, the fried football heads with the pork buns on the inside, the fried donut with the white donut fun roll wraps, and shumai, etc.)

    2) Come early and make sure you stand as close to the edge of waiting area as possible as lists are solely memorized by the wait staff and when things get hectic, they sit anyone that's close by and ready. It's Asian style seating, so you'll get a lot of communal tables, even small four tables if you have small parties of two.  Just raise your hand, gesturing you are still there and ready and reminding them you are next when it's suppose to be your turn and not get line cut by someone else.

    3) Come with a small group and someone Cantonese to get the 411...for me (my gf, she's not too shabby with order Dim Sum-(hi baby!) but don't get too cocky there lol) however I have a good Cantonese background as well! so I know what I want and what to get usually by looking at their product.  Coming in a small group allows you flexibility to sit faster and not wait too long. If you have a large group I suggest going to a larger accommodating place.

    SUMMARY:
Come early, and get Roasted Pork Buns.

I went here for lunch on a Wednesday. I've never been to authentic dim sum, and this place was a fun surprise! We were seated with an old man who was reading the newspaper, and didn't even give us a second glance. You can either order dishes from the waiter, or wait until the dumplings come by in a cart and then order "a la cart" (sorry... I do love puns). We had General Tso's Chicken on Rice, roast pork buns (although we wanted steamed, but those never came by), shrimp and pork steamed dumplings, and fried shrimp dumplings. Everything was delicious, including the tea they give you with your meal. Four of us walked out stuffed, and it only cost $30 including tip.

Great Dim Sum place but I would suggest to go early as it gets pretty packed. They serve all the typical dim sum dishes and they are best known for their roast pork buns.

Heck, sometimes when I don't want to wait for dim sum. I just get 3 roast pork buns to go and devour them then and there. Delicious for $0.90 each, these are worth it compared to getting buns from Taipan or Fay Da for $1....

Really annoyed that they wouldn't serve me and my friend. Pretty sucky to go to a restaurant and not get food to eat! Only managed to nab two dim sum plates, which were only okay. We left after sitting around for 30 minutes.

I'm not a huge dim sum person when it comes to my Chinese food, but my girlfriend read good things about Hop Shing, so we ventured down to Chinatown a couple weekends back to get our fill. We had to wait a little bit even though we got there before noon; it definitely starts getting a little more crowded after that - so be prepared to wait a bit otherwise; there really isn't that much space up front to wait around - don't expect many of the 4 seats or so to be free. Eating is pretty much the same as at of these Chinese joints...you're likely to get stuck at a big group seating table with people you don't know, but that's how it goes. Food carts come by fairly frequently, but it's usually different types of food...so if you're hankering for something, grab it when it rolls by.

As for the food itself - pretty tasty stuff, if I say so myself. The roast pork buns are a bit denser than my personal favorites (at Mei Li Wah), but it's definitely filling, and you get a good heaping of roasted pork - one of the better buns I've had over the years. The dumplings here are pretty good as well; we a serving of shu mai as well as shrimp dumplings wrapped in rice skin - delicious and a different, thinner, stickier texture to the dumpling skin than your typical flour-based wrappers. The bean curd is also delicious in all its greasy glory.

As with most dim sum joints, you end up getting a pretty good deal for your buck - between the two of us, our bill came out to a grand total of $9(!) - not bad for being solidly filled by midday. This definitely isn't your tourist joint that may be seen on Mott Street - I spotted one other non-Chinese person sitting down besides myself - but as long as you're okay sharing a table (which ain't a huge deal when I'm chowing down), it's a good spot to get your fill. Maybe next time, I'll try some of the Chinese delicacies that I haven't been adventurous enough to check out (like chicken feet).

Quite possibly the worst dim sum I've ever had. If you are able to speak Chinese you can place orders faster in the hectic afternoons on the weekends. It's a stressful environment sitting at a table with 4 other parties. Especially after the Danish couple next to me kept giving me dirty looks for the preferential treatment I was getting. I will say that we ordered 6-7 dishes and it came out to $16 which is unbelievable in Manhattan.

The coconut buns that you can order to go are amazing though. Skip the sit down meal and order buns to go from the front bakery.

    Roast Pork Buns.

    THASSSSSSSALLLLL you need (:

    Come early, why?

    1) It gets crowded & they run on some weird ass seating system where you just wave the # of people in your party in the air, fighting with little Asian folk about whoever was there first.

    2) The pork buns will SELL OUT!

This place is also cheap as heck ... last time I was here the bill was $16 for 4 people..that's 3 guys + me (granted I don't eat that much). Insane!

Impressively cheap dim sum place where Bowery becomes Chatham Square. It's a really old school place (which, if you know me, automatically gets points in my book) in the style of Nom Wah Tea Parlor. But the difference is that this place never really got 'reinvented' like Nom Wah did. It's still a simple, small dim sum place with minimal ambitions beyond just trucking along the way they always have.

The prices are rock bottom low and the dishes aren't the #1 best, but they're nice and fresh. The place is always filled on weekends with old people just sitting down to 'yum cha'.

If you've got a big party, you might have to wait a while for the table, but if there's only 2 or 3 of you, be prepared to 'daap toi' - share tables - with others. And if it's just you, you can probably find a spot at the bar! The waits can be long because old people take forever to eat. And well they should -- in New York, a place where you can slow down and just enjoy life is rare indeed.

***** 5 stars for the BBQ pork buns!  They are warm and fresh out of the oven so when you bite into them, they are soft and chewy and melts in your mouth.  The filling is delicious.  They use actual pork meat (not just pork fat!) marinated in this delicious bbq onion sauce that has just the perfect amount of cornstarch without being pasty.  At only $0.80 each, I bought a bunch of them and there were just as yummy reheated in my microwave.

Aside from the pork buns, the dim sum was just ok.  There is no system here, you just come, flag down the waitress and sit anywhere where there is room, most of the time you will be sharing a table with strangers.  Dim sum costs $1.80 per item and that is dirt cheap, but still the dim sum wasn't memorable.  Hargow, sieu mai, tofu skin roll were all really tough. because the skin was too thick.  Although it did come with huge pieces of shrimp, just like the shrimp crepe roll which was delicious.  My favorite is usually the chicken feet and this place feels like they use old feet.  It was thick and tough and the marinade didn't penetrate through, it was the first time I didn't finish this dish. : (  The fried shrimp balls were were crispy but a bit salty.

I didn't try everything on the menu, but I definitely loved the shrimp crepe roll, the coconut bun and the BBQ pork bun.

This place has the BEST dim sum in all of Chinatown, and I've tried a lot of places.  Cheap prices and dim sum as good as in Hong Kong - I know because my mom lived in Hong Kong for a few years and she's been coming to this place for as long as she can remember after moving to NY decades ago.  It's still her favorite place in Chinatown for genuine tasting Cantonese style dishes that taste like home.  Try everything!  You can't go wrong!

It gets pretty hectic on weekends, so get everything takeout and take home and enjoy.  I don't enjoy sharing tables with strangers, but if you're ok with that, the food is extra delicious when fresh.

    Food - 4/5
    Value - 4.5/5
    Service - 3.5/5
    Atmosphere - 3.5/5

I've been coming here for dimsum whether its eat-in or takeout ever since I was a kid but decided to write a review since I picked some up to bring into work today.  All the other reviewers are pretty much spot on with their reviews.

Small diner places like Hop Shing mostly cater to elderly Chinese folks which kind of explains the service and atmosphere.  Most of them order a few dishes from the cart and enjoy their meal slowly, which I guess makes the staff complacent.  They are trained to see if your teapot top is opened (which means its empty) but not to see if you have water and/or if you need a refill on water (this is not a racial, age, gender, etc. bias of any kind!). Whether or not we should expect the same kind of service from them is up to each individual person.

The dimsum is about as affordable as you can get these days in Chinatown, I can't think of any comparable places (if someone knows, please let me know).  Most of their food is real good, depends on what you're in the mood for.  My personal favorite is the lotus leaf wrap, I think other reviewers know it as the jasmine sticky rice.  I will concur with Isabel G. on the spring rolls unless you are really craving them.  If you want something fried, go with the fried shrimp meatballs instead.

The best so far! Came for Dim Sum with my friend, although the menu dishes some of the patrons got looked great too. If you judge a Chinese restaurant by the number of tourists and non-Asian customers, this place takes the cake. Like David H., I was weirded out by the crappy bottle of hot sauce. Oh well, none of the food required additional flavor. Service is typical for these places; almost friendly but without a smile. No worries.

Onto the food. Pardon my poor descriptions and lack of names. I forget some of the things we had but nothing was bad.
The only thing we didn't finish was some sort of a doughy pork/shrimp thing. That's a really bad description, but it wasn't but, just weird for us.
    Glazed chicken pieces were awesome.
    Amazing shu mai
My first turnip cake was fantastic! Will definitely be trying more of these.
I'm probably in the minority, but they had the best baked and steamed pork bun I've ever had! Impressive.
    Egg custards were super yummy.

So how much do you think two big mouths spent on a meal that took about 1 hour and satisfaction that lasted at least 6? $15 with tip. That's ridiculous.

First thing's first, if you want to receive anything other than mediocre service you'd better speak Chinese or Mandarin, because either A. no one there speaks English, or B. the staff there just refuse to speak it (I think its the latter). And before anyone hates on me for my opinions, let me just say that this review is based solely on MY experience, and will re-iterate that this is just that--an opinion.

The run down: when my 2 friends and I walked in, it was a while before we were acknowledged. When we were finally seated, we were given the sheet where the dishes are marked and the lady that pulls the tray around began speaking Chinese to one of my friends who explained that she didn't speak Chinese. We then asked to see what was in the trays. The lady would not show us and continued to speak in Chinese. Finally, we got frustrated and just pointed at random covered dishes which the lady put on our table. This continued pretty much throughout our meal.

Service aside, the food was pretty ok.  In comparison to other places I've tried, the food was about a 3 (I wish the food had been hot). I liked the shumai and the dumplings, but didn't care for much for the chicken feet (which is normally my favorite). They were pretty overcooked and swollen looking, eeew. The steamed pork bun was also just ok. A bit scant on the filling. Oh, the turnip cake was pretty good and I quite liked the egg custard as well.

And because I don't want to end this review on a negative note, I'll add that the prices were more than reasonable. From about .90 cents to about $1.90 per dish. It was only about $22 for 3 of us. I really can't complain about that, especially in NY where our meals were totaling in excess of $80 for the three of us in other establishments.

Bottom line: I personally would not go back because the food wasn't good enough for me to put up with the bad service and crazy stares, but if you're on a budget I guess this place would do. Just don't forget your cash because they don't accept credit/debit cards.

SUPER cheap and REALLY delicious dim sum! it's a small place so you'll probably have to wait and/or share a table. but it's totally worth it. you can order dim sum from the menu, or get it as it comes out fresh in the carts. since the restaurant is small, every dish is still piping hot as it comes to you. i came here with two others, and the three of us paid $5.50 each (including tip), and we were stuffed!

dinner is good too, but nothing special. the night i had dinner there, the service was really slow...but it was fine for dim sum, so i guess it just depends on the time.

bottom line: best dim sum in chinatown!!!

WARNING: DIM SUM ENDS AT 4 P.M. ~ For those who don't know~

The food is tasty. The buns are delicious and soft. The sweet rice is yummy. The dumplings are good, the shu mai is tasty, the sweet bun is ginormous  The spring rolls, I wouldn't recommend... too oily and they just seem weird compared to other places. The wonton noodle soup is delicious and cheap too!

Waiters... Ehh they seat you down, but they aren't the most attentive people in the world. But hey I didn't mind, I got some good food in my belly for a cheap price. They can work on their attentiveness and get rid of the oiliness in their egg rolls.

You gotta try this place out! I couldn't stop drinking tea and eating all the buns, chicken feet, dumplings, shu mai, etc..

There's a pipe outside this building, just to the right of the door, that I used to sit on as a child while my mom or dad was inside getting siopao and sin zuk gyun and whatever else they could for us to eat in the parking lot of Six Flags Great Adventure. When I came back years later, and quite disoriented I must say, that pipe was my landmark. I had found familiar ground, and it was as delicious and cheap as ever.

This place had closed for a minute, but it's back in action now, and as busy as ever. This place is always packed for Sunday dim sum, but the turnover is quick. The venue isn't as pretty as some other dim sum places, so it might push away some close-minded folks who are new to this sort of thing. It's your typical "sit down with strangers" joint, with a random grandpa scarfing down his noodles next to you. In essence, this place is for reals.

As usual, food comes in carts and you just pick what looks good. Careful, though.... the food comes in waves, and a tad bit slower compared to most places. This can be a drag for those with poor stomach capacity or for those who blow their loads early, as you will likely miss out on dishes you wish you had room for.  Also, they have menu items for those who want noodles, rice, soup, etc. Quality overall isn't gourmet, but that's not what anyone is here for. Dim sum is for lots of different types of good-tasting food that doesn't empty the wallet, and that is exactly what Hop Shing provides.

Basically the only downside is that it is easy to miss out on dishes due to the "slow" waves. But when 3 people get stuffed for $18... none of that matters.

I am going to give this place 4 stars because 1. I had to be very aggressive and 2. I didnt get to try any sticky rice.

However, the dim sum here is amazing - we had har gau, pork buns (different than what I am used to - brown insides rather than red - but incredible), tofu with pork, taro root, fried shrimp dumplings, cellophane noodles stuffed with shrimp, egg rolls, and shrimp and chive dumplings. However, the star of the day was pineapple baked buns. One of the best things I have ever had a dim sum place - we even ordered more!

Word of advice, if you are not Chinese you likely will not get a good table and they won't come by with a lot of the carts. Take things in your own hands - wave people down, order things if they haven't come by and just get up and talk to the servers when the carts get near you. By the end of our meal they would bring over dishes and ask if we want them.

For the 15 or so dishes we ordered the meal came out to $33. Not bad for four people and a tummy full of great dim sum.

I am very particular about my dim sum and since my favorite restaurant closed down, I haven't found another place to fill the void... until I came here! My friend first introduced me to this place about a year ago, but I have since been back many times.

This place can be a bit daunting if you aren't Chinese or if you don't speak Cantonese/Mandarin, but don't let that scare you away! My Chinese isn't amazing (okay, it sucks), but the waiters are always super helpful. They'll be happy to bring over an English menu for you to order off of. There are also traditional dim sum carts being pushed around, but I find that the selection isn't always consistent. Also, this place is super cheap -- my friends and I eat like fattasses but we're always happily surprised when they bring out our bill. So, if you want authentic dim sum at a great price, definitely come here!

I've had Dim Sum  in San Fran, San Diego, Orange County, and LA. So why not NY China Town?

    Comments:
First up, the Bun Bao are the biggest I've seen; they're the size of a Hamburger. The Egg Custards are as good as they get.

12 people only added up to a hair under $100, so a cheap brunch.

This would be the first place I've seen just a bottle of hot sauce on the table instead of a jar of chilies and mustard, so that was different.

I came with a group of 12, so we had to split up as seats became available. This seems to be pretty common in NY, so I can't really say much about it.

This is a decent place for Dim Sum, although, be prepared to wait and get split up.

My suggestion would be get some Buns and Custard to go, and just skip the sit down while you explore China Town.

Roast pork buns and coconut buns are simply da best thing to have from here!

The roast pork bun innards aren't  red like other Chinese restaurants/bakeries, oh noooooo it is brown with actual nice brown sauce and you can see actual lil pieces of onions...... Yummy! I usually buy 6, they freeze very well and when ready to eat, my trick is to slice in half and add a layer of mayo! Yes mayo! and then close it back up and voila, trust me you will be in roast pork bun heaven!
The coconut bun is like no other! Very soft, coconutty and buttery! This thing is superb!
The take out line is when you walk in to the left, just hold your ground and be prepared to get skipped by a few of our elderly "friends".  Just maintain your position and speak your order and if in the mood get a lil dim sum too. I get stuffed peppers, shrimp har gow with added sauce from the bottle and I am on my way!

I'm totally a fan. They don't speak much English, you have to point out on the menu. The server there had a hard time explaining for us the dimsum ended at 4, so we ordered rice porridge and boiled chicken with ginger scallion, which turned out to be GREAT!!! (especially the ginger scallion sauce). We came back the next day to have dimsum, and it was also really good although it was a bit crowded. Plus, it's super cheap!!!
Would definitely come back over and over whenever I visit Chinatown NYC.

I can only recommend one thing here, their  baked cha sui bao (roast pork buns) which is very good; maybe one of the best in Chinatown.
The dough has the  tradional texture of sweet and chewy.
If you take it apart you will notice that the pork is not the leftover roast from last night like some places.
The pork is sliced very thin and cooked with onion and spicies.
It is also not doped with red food coloring like other places.

So for great roast pork bun I come here!

My Partner and I had read so many great reviews on this place that we decided to go there for lunch yesterday. It took us a little while to find the place we get there a little after 11am and the place is already pact. We sit at a table with several other people and honestly I felt over whelmed with all the hustle and bustle that was going on around us. Two ladies at the next table were having a heated conversation I had no idea why because I couldnt understand what they were saying. At this point I wanted to leave but the waitress brought our menu so I ordered the chicken and rice because of the reviews from here. Then another lady came by with the dim sum cart. I saw the gentleman next to me  pick out some steamed dumplings so I went with the same thing plus some sort of meat balls he also ordered some chicken feet I passed on those. The dim sum was out of this world then the chickin and rice arrives at this point I wish i hadent ordered it because we were enjoying the dim sum so much but we figured since we ordered it we would try it and it was also delish. We couldnt eat all the rice so I called a waiter over to ask for a bag to put the rice in so since I had read here that they didnt speak English I motioned out what I wanted(like an idiot) then to my surprise he spoke better English than I did lol. I go up to pay and could see they had the sweet buns but I was so full I didnt order one. The both of us ate for 15$ including tip!! The place is clean the staff is super friendly and the food is great! Were going back next week and this time I will save room for the sweet buns well I will try my best to lol. Def try this place!!!!

Super cheap.  3 of us ate here for $17.

Shrimp and chives was the best we had here.  Ate a bunch of random shrimp and/ or pork dumping that were all good.

Mostly AsIan patrons, so not your typical tourist place.

This is my favorite place for takeout dimsum. Don't let the long lines mislead you! They are really fast! There's a laminated menu affixed to the ordering counter, so if you don't speak chinese, you can just point to the menu. Not all the workers know english.

As far as dimsum goes, I usually get something different everytime although my favorite is the bean curd skin roll. The chicken feet is a little spicy which I LOVE, but some people say it's not what they expected. My friends really like the roast pork buns, but I prefer the chicken ones.

The lunch dishes are really good too but you have to wait for them to cook it - I ordered the fish with chinese vegetable for $5, and was pleasantly surprised by the PILE of fish in the order. So cheap and delicious.

Definitely give this place a try if you haven't already. You will be visiting often. :).

Ok, so I yelped dimsum in chinatown and this place got great reviews, especially the steamed pork buns and the fact that the ds is so cheap. So we had to try it! First, the pork bun disgusting. It was a grapefruit size mound of dry dough that tasted like bisquik batter with a tablespoon size of minced bbq pork. I couldnt stomach it! Half of the ds we got I picked apart and spit out because it was grizzly.  The positives were that everything was super cheap and the steamed shrimp balls were decent. Otherwise everything else was excessively greasy.. sorry two thumbs down.

My aunt (who is a non-native New Yorker who has lived in NY longer than most Yelpers have been alive) swears by this place.  She brought me here during my first week in NY for dim sum and I was surprised in many ways.

    1. Food was cheap.  Like super cheap.  I ordered like 10 extra dim sum dishes after lunch to keep in my freezer and it was like $18 for all of them.  Tasted great fresh and reheated. This shocked the crap out of me because I had just bought canned tuna for $2.25.

    2. Service is surprisingly good.  It's by no means friendly or pampering but they do make eye contact with you and bring you what you need when you ask for it.

    3. Cleanliness is next to godliness and this place is neither a god nor demigod but they keep the tables unsticky and thumbs out of soup.  Decor may not win any awards but you don't need to be afraid to bring your germaphobe friends here.

    Things I love here:
    - vegetarian dimsum thing with peanuts in it: I really wish I knew what it was called...it's got the translucent skin with brown filling.
    - deep fried taro ball things.  They kinda look like spikey footballs.
    - 80% of the noodle dishes on the menu
    - meatballs -- I love the unnatural bounce they have that reminds me of a delicious, meaty version of superballs from the vending machines at supermarkets.  They also have water chestnuts inside.  Surprisingly, good with Worcestershire sauce.
    - shumai.  Duh.

So come here for a serious, no-frills dimsum experience.

I've never sat down to eat here, but I totally dig the vintage diner-y feel.

I'm only reviewing the roast pork buns. My parents were raving about how good they were and went out of their way to buy a dozen. And they did not disappoint!

The food is extremely cheap ($1.80 per dimsum dish), so if you're looking to get stuffed on a budget, this is the place to drop by.

With all dimsum places in Chinatown, you can expect it to be crowded, hectic, and...dirty. Most likely going to have to share a table with a bunch of other parties, so you're not really able to have that much privacy.

The food itself was decent, except when I went the food rarely came out! I was hoping to just destroy all the dimsum dishes as they rolled out, but me and my friend ended up having to just order from the menu cause we were getting impatient. Pork buns were good (but heavy), and we also got the typical beef w/ tomato over rice, which was also solid.

My friend and I are always hungry pigs yet when the bill came, only $20! So, although service, atmosphere, and selection was subpar, I'd have to say it was still a cheap fulfilling meal. Our Chinese parents would be proud of our decision to come here.

my favorite to-go dimsum joint in the worldddddddddddddddd. not the city. the mfuckng world!
don't you dare walk out of those double doors without
CHA SIEW BAOS (Baked Roast Pork Buns).
If you have nothing else with you, buy a whole box (dozen) of that addicting goodness. . Or call them before a flight out of New Yawk and order ahead. pick it up on your way to the airport and stuff your face while in the car with loved ones or not, while talking and chewing madly in love.

FRIED "JA FUN GAW" is mighty mighty BANGIN', only restaurant that has this in nyc.
FRIED SHRIMP BALLS- makes me ROFLMAO everything i eat this oily goodness.

Everything else is amazing.....but the aformentioned is my safe and comfort haven. i heard the angels rapping. ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh yo yo ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Don't be afraid to be standing with both of your elbows out....cuz you know, when it gets busy busy busy busy......you MUST stop those behind you from trying to Squeeze YOU OUT OF LINE.....and if they still fussin' and tryin' to skip you.. you can ELBOW THEM NICELY AWAY NONCHANTLY WHILE SCREAMING YOUR ORDER. Dont' get too violent. You don't want to walk away without your cha siew baos, son.

I grew up eating dim sum from this restaurant, and although it's been shut down before, and took some time to reorganize and open again, I can remember when I was a kid, my dad would bring brown bags full of these yummy dim sum dishes, and once every couple of months, our entire family would come here and eat dim sum with my parents, brother and their friends.

This restaurant has been around for decades, and their food is consistently authentic, delicious and SUPER budget friendly.

My favorite bun is the coconut sugar bun (Gei-May-Bao).  It brings back memories from when I was kid.  Love this place!

I have been in this restaurant only once since it's turned back to Hop Shing from Chatham Square Restaurant, and it seems a little less dingier than it used to be.  Although, it doesn't matter to me.  If it was the same, I'd still frequent the place every time I come back to visit my brother (as I live in Boston now).

The only real con about this place is that if you're doing take out, the line is OUT THE DOOR on weekends!  Good luck fighting with the older chinese people in line.  They will walk over you to get to the front of the line...

Love you eternally, Hop Shing...you always bring me down memory lane and provide me with delicious dim sum!

If they're busy, just go to the counter and order a few BBQ Beef Buns for $0.90 a piece. They're amazing and totally portable. In fact, order a dozen and take them home, they keep and microwave for a week.
