I stopped in yesterday to get a Peanut Butter Pie for my Dad's b-day. They put the "oooooh" in O. M. G.
It's richer than Richie. Sweeter than high fructose corn syrup (and doesn't even use any!). All with the perfect compliment of a gingersnap crust that adds a kick of spice.
Plus their "take a penny/leave a penny" jar by the counter is loaded...even has things other than pennies!

I have been on a quest to find the perfect scone for ages now and I think I'm there!

On a busy stretch of Chicago Avenue (OK, there isn't a non-busy stretch of Chicago Ave is there?) in West Town sits the sort of pie shop you'd want to find in small town America. Little store front that looks like a mom & pop shop of yesteryear. A window table that looks out onto the busy passerbies. A warm interior with vintage charm. That smell...Oh goodness who can resist the smell of fresh baked pies?
There was a line of customers buying not one or two but sometimes several pies. The owner mentioned a lady came in from the burbs earlier that morning and bought their entire stock of scones. Pretty impressive stuff. I had high expectations. Good news because my pie did not disappoint.
I bought a small pear, apple cranberry pie with walnut crust and it couldn't have been better. Absolutely amazing crust. Great texture. Divine. I had to write this review on Yelp in fact to stop myself from eating the rest of the pie. Yes folks - it's that good.
All I can say is WOW! I should have expected a fabulous pie, but the apple pie my husband brought home yesterday far exceeded any expectations I may have had.
Um, just one question: is it too early to order our Thanksgiving pies? :)
No joke, I now scoff in the face of other pies.
Every pie I've had from this place has been more than excellent. My only real quibble I've had so far is that the strawberry-rhubarb could've been more tart from the rhubarb. HOWEVER, extreme kudos for cutting the overall tartness by some other means than a cement mixer, a sugar factory and a stick of rhubarb. I was very relived that it wasn't overly sweet.
I've noticed the words "cream pie" and "customer service" show up a lot in the 1-2 star reviews for this place. I haven't tried any of the cream pies, so I can't really speak to that. However, I can point out that ANY new place (or in their case, a change in how they operate) is going to have a few customer service issues as it sorts out what it can and can't achieve on a day-to-day basis, not to mention that the people I've dealt with have been helpful, knowledgeable and overall friendly.
My friend called us the next day to let us know that he had a dream about the chocolate pie....that it was the size of a bed and he was rolling around in all it's goodness.
That's how good these pies are!

Just another review for the awesome ladies who keep me flush with pie.
If you're ever headed to an event and need to bring something, or maybe a last-minute birthday gift? Bring pie!
They offer small, half-size pies in case you have a small group and want to sample a couple. They're the cutest, prettiest things I've ever seen and guaranteed to draw a couple "Aww!"s. They're usually around $8 apiece and can feed 3-4 not super hungry people. I've split one before and it was incredibly filling, but worth it.
The staff is always super friendly and smiley. Come here for pies made with sunshine and happiness.
Also, they will do a rush order for you if you're in a pinch sometimes, so I LOVE them for that, too!

This was the second stop on our day of eating our way through Chicago, and we couldn't have arrived at a better time.
There was only one person in line in front of us, so it didn't take long before we had ordered and were sipping iced coffee in the adorable window-nook booth. A few minutes later they brought out one enormous slice of Pork-Apple-Sage, a savory pie, and ooh my, it was divine. It was like thanksgiving except with pork instead of turkey. My mom suspects they gave us a bigger slice than usual since the two of us were sharing, which is fine by me!
We're considering ordering one of these for Thanksgiving, so for all you others out there that are too lazy to make your own sides (and desserts, though we didn't try that), consider this!
Also, by 12:30 when we left, there was a huge line out the door... so plan ahead for timing.
Just plain delicious!
I have had the pleasure of trying their sweet pies and their savory pies, and they are both fantastic. First time I visited the small and very cute shop; second time I called in an order and asked Husband to pick the pie up for me. I have had the Apple Pie, the Chicken Pot Pie, and for a small dinner party we ordered the Strawberry Rhubarb.
All were flawless when it came to filling/crust ration, texture of crust, sweetness of filling, etc.
The pie I ordered in advance had my name handwritten on it, was packaged beautifully in a brown box, wrapped in wax paper inside. It's these touches that really sell it for me -- aside from the perfect pie of course!
THIS IS THE BEST PIE YOU WILL EVER TASTE IN YOUR LIFE.
That's my review.
I am definitely a huge fan of the place now, I even want to work for them! So far we tried the passion fruit meringue, sugar cream, apple pie, apple pear cranberry pie, key lime pie, maple pecan pie, and coffee cream pie. They were all very good, BUT my favorites are the passion fruit meringue, anything with apples, key lime, and the coffee cream. The crust is outstanding, and the fillings are fresh and not too sweet. I am totally addicted!

Why do I like this place? Quality ingredients and great taste. I've had fruit pies and cream pies. Let's break it down:
Crust: Buttery and flaky. You just NEVER see crust this good from a commercial bakery.
Fruit filling: Fresh, farm taste. They buy a lot of their summer fruit at the Green City Market in Lincoln Park. They add a lot of fruit, and it's not so sweet that you can't taste the fruit. This is as it should be. If you have really outstanding ripe fruit, don't bury the flavor under a pile of sugar.
Cream filling (chocolate): Dark chocolate, deeply rich and delicious. Uber-fattening of course, but hey -- if you're buying a chocolate cream pie, you're not trying to skimp on calories.
Storefront is really cute too, but that's not a big factor for me.
I love love love this place.
Me and my mom stopped in one day to
get some coffee and chocolate creme pie.
It was so delicious!!! Yummy rich chocolate,
perfect crust, smooth coffee.
I even made my mom get the chocolate pie for
my birthday celebration.
The spot is quite small, so be prepared to
eat and go.
But i do love the quaint little tables and
just everything about it.
makes me feel like i'm eating pie in the 1950's or something.
anyway, highly recommended!
I really wanted to enjoy Hoosier Mama as much as the other reviewers but I just couldn't do it. My roommate brought home a passion fruit meringue and a key lime and both were just... off.
The passion fruit was relatively tasty, though prohibitively tart, even to someone who LOVES tart foods and will eat lemons like candy. Also, every single time I ate even a small sliver, I ended up getting horrible, all-night-into-the-next-day heartburn. The pie is that acidic. Eating a slice was always more trouble than it was worth. It was especially annoying because I hate meringue (I know, I'm weird) but the pie was so tart that it was literally painful to eat the custard without an equal portion of meringue. This pie was so difficult, literally, to eat that it took a week and a half for 3 people to finish it.
The key lime was less painful, but it was just not good. The gingersnap crust had such strong ginger and molasses flavor that it really overpowered the mild key lime flavor. The whipped cream also contributed to the problem by further mellowing the citrus-y goodness. Often, all I could really taste was the crust.
The pie crusts are also just over baked or something. They aren't flaky or tender, just dry and crisp. Normally, crust is my favorite part of the pie. Not so much here.
Honestly, for pies this expensive, I expect more. I really shouldn't be able to buy a better pie at Dominick's. I also don't think I should be able to do better myself. Both were true, in my opinion.
I was suffering from cupcake shop saturation and fro-yo overload, so I decided to try out something new...pie. Okay, so that's about as untrendy as it gets, but Hoosier Mama Pie Shop makes what's old seem new again with some unusual and fabulous flavor options. The pies are available in two sizes or by the slice and baked from scratch every morning. The storefront is tiny and unassuming, and the interior has a retro, cozy feel that was the perfect setting for me to sit and devour my slice of deliciousness.
And what a lovely slice it was. I opted for passionfruit meringue. The smooth filling of this beauty is tongue-tingling tangy, but the sticky, marshmallowy meringue balances it out perfectly. Swapping out traditional lemon for the more exotic passionfruit doesn't sound like a big deal, but let me tell you, pie fans, that little switch moves this treat up about ten notches on my pie chart!
I thought it would be amazing. I am a pie guy. It was very good. I thought the prices were fair. the pie was fresh, but I am still looking for my dream pie.
I love pie. (If I knew who first combined pastry and fruit, I would build a time machine, go back, and give them a big sloppy kiss.) Went to the tiny, busy shop, took the chicken pot pie, strawberry-rhubarb pie, and chocolate chess pie on a road trip: to Indiana. All were devoured with great delight and lots of lip smacking. Looking forward to the next road trip, fingers crossed the pork pie is there... Thanks for loving pie Paula!
p.s. had a scone for the road, ate crumbs off my t-shirt as I crossed the state line, wished I'd bought 2
Slice of Chocolate Chess pie, including tax: $4.41
Chunky bar, including tax: $.94
My dignity: worthless
This place was hot, in more ways than one. On a warm day this place, with numerous ovens going, heats up! No problem, we took it to go instead. The girls at the counter were so sweet and helpful. We got chocolate chess pie, which tasted like melty brownie in a pie crust, banana cream pie which was speckled with fresh vanilla bean and apple blueberry crumb, which I am told was ok, but I was not saved a bite, which I specifically asked for so hmmm.....
I will argue that the crust of a pie is almost important as the filling.
Hoosier Mama Pie is certainly cranking out a great flakey/buttery crust that sets up a great pie. I've tried both the banana and coconut cream pies, and have to say they are both good, but I would love for a more intense flavor in both pies.... Can we punch it up a couple notches? Maybe toasted coconut? Maybe more banana flavor some how?
It's obvious ingredients are quality, keep it up!
Regardless, I will return as I've yet to find another place in-town that has a pie that stacks up... Disagree? I'd love to hear!
Lots of hype on the opening of the first Hoosier Mama pie store several weeks ago. After trying 5 different pies, the verdict is: Overrated.
1. Banana cream - great ingredients, but very few slices of banana, and a tart lemon taste. I don't want lemon taste in my banana cream pie. And I certainly expect enough bananas to get a slice with each bite. Great crust.
2. Coconut cream - very creamy, but light on the coconut. Like the banana cream, it has a great creamy taste, not much of a coconut taste. Mediocre crust.
3. Chocolate cream - also very creamy, but boring chocolate taste. With the availability of great chocolates, I would have expected better. Again, ok crust, but nothing special.
4. Pear, sour cherry with crumble top - terrific, but more pear than cherry. Great crust, perfect crumble top. Really good.
5. Apple - good not great. Chunks of apple, not slices. A very thick burnt edge to the crust, impossible to cut with a fork.
It all comes down to good ingredients, but not great ingredients, too sparingly used, with crusts that are sometimes good, sometimes not. Lots of creamy fat, but not enough flavor to make it worth the calories.
In a very small space, mostly kitchen, with a few (3?) crowded tables in the front, this is a feeble effort to run a retail establishment. Eating-in looks painful with takeout buyers crowded around the diners. Baking a limited assortment of both sweet and savory pies each day they're open (closed Sundays and Mondays), there are few choices to start, and fewer left by early afternoon.
Would I decline a piece of Hoosier Mama pie - never! But it's nothing special, won't be the highlight of any meal, and is not worth the trip to their understocked little store.
I am really not a fan of pie but wanted something sweet and it was close. They have changed my mind about pie! The crust is flaky and moist and the chocolate chess is great!
SOOOOO good! I am not really a pie person. The crumbly cranberry-nut- delicious something else I forgot was amazing! I left part of the pie in the fridge and forgot about it and 2 days later, reheated in the microwave it was still good! Even was crunchy!
I had quiche which was good - broccoli and cheese in a flaky crust, and slices mostly fruit pies which I love! The crust is really good, tons of fruit, and the kitchen is open so you can see how they are making it!
They have $8 mini pies which are perfect for dessert for two. Metropolis coffee which I haven't tried. Wish they were open Monday and later in the day. But they look like they are doing well and I'll definately be getting dessert.
I had been emailing back and forth with Paula to pick up a pie and she apologized for being slightly late with replies because they were so busy opening the store. She said I could stop in yesterday (before it was officially open) and pick up my Chocolate Chess Pie. It's a small storefront and pretty much has an aroma that causes drool to slowly drip out of your mouth as you walk in. Hoosier mama worked its Pavlovian wonders on me.
Man that pie was good. As spoken by the owner, it's 70% Venezuelan chocolate. That frickin thing tastes like a giant brownie. Be careful that you don't eat the whole thing. I stopped back in today for coffee and to show some support. I'm scared to make this a regular stop, otherwise i can kiss this year's marathon goodbye. Stop in for me!
For all the cupcakes I like to eat, my true love is pie.
Hoosier Mama Pie Company is located in a tiny storefront on Chicago near Ashland. It's a seriously tiny place, with two tables for two and a counter with a small display case full of pie. It's definitely cute in there; it's decorated in a retro-kitschy manner, with seafoam green as the predominant color.
I came here on their grand opening (PI day 3/14!) but sadly, they had sold out of pies when my boyfriend and I came in for an after-lunch snack. The owner was really apologetic, and was handing out little handmade certificates for a free slice of pie at a later date. Disappointed that I hadn't gotten my lazy ass there earlier, we walked home.
I came back yesterday to redeem my certificate. There's a rotating selection of pies based on what's in season; yesterday, there was a banana cream, lemon meringue, sugar chess, coconut custard, apple, chocolate chess, and peanut butter. They also had a couple of muffins. It was a tough decision, but the lemon meringue looked stunning, so I got a piece of that and a muffin to tide myself over until after dinner. They were out of slices of apple pie, so I got a little six-inch apple pie.
The lemon-poppy muffin was tender and very lemony, with a nice crumb and chock-full of poppy seeds. I am not really a muffin person (if I'm going to eat a little cake, I'd rather have a cupcake), but these were really good.
After waiting one million hours for my boyfriend, we finally got to try the pies. The apple pie was tiny and cute, and decorated with a little leaf of pastry on top. The crust was both flaky and tender--this is tough to achieve! But it was perfect, buttery and delicious. The pie was delicately spiced, and really allowed the flavor of the apple to shine. The lemon meringue was tangy and sour, which was complemented nicely by the light-as-air meringue. Neither of the pies were overly sweet, and both were comforting and delicious.
I'll definitely be back.
Pie is tasty! This place serves it. Also coffee. It seems like people either love or hate this place, but I have to weigh in on the side of love. My friend and I shared a piece of Cherry Berry pie (lots of cherries, but also blackberries, I think), and it was delicious. Sweet, but not too sweet, and the crust was good. A little tough on the rim, but honestly that's what happens when homemade pie isn't five minutes out of the oven. The waitress chose to give us an extra large piece instead of cutting it into two fairly small pieces, so extra points for generosity. I'll be going back to try the rhubarb!
Wow. Paula sure does know how to make a great pie! And she was at the shop working to make more pies when I stopped by early this morning! I had stopped by last Saturday afternoon for a piece of pie and the place was cleaned out!!! Nothing left except for a muffin. Fortunately for me, I was given a note for a free piece of pie the next time I visited. Curiosity got the best of me and I decided to come back today! Plenty of parking in the area so I was able to pop in and out without problems.
I ordered a slice of the banana creme pie and the chocolate chess pie. Both very very delicious! The banana creme pie had really great vanilla creme filling.. You can even see the vanilla bean in the creme filling. The bananas tasted a bit sour for my taste. Kinda like apple pie filling except with bananas. I didnt care too much for that. But the crust, oh that crust, was nice and flakey. Just the way I like it!
The chocolate chess pie is my favorite!!! It has the consistency of a brownie, except mushier. I've never had Venezulelan chocolate before, but I gotta say, after today, I LIKE IT A LOT! Right now I'm staring at my half eaten pie and wondering if I should eat the rest now or save it for later. I think I'll eat it now in case someone decides to steal it from me!
Service was fast and friendly and the prices were affordable. It is about $20 a pie and $4.41 (includes tax) for a piece of pie. The peanut butter pie looked really really tasty. I am going to try that one next time I go back!
I was so excited for this place to finally open. However, as they are closed on Sundays and Tuesdays, I couldn't quite maneuver the timing in order to place a pie order for my Wednesday morning departure to Michigan. When I got to Hoosier Mama, I was rather sad because all 4 of my choices were not available that day, and I was told the Chocolate Chess pie (which is #1 on my list) was still in the oven and wouldn't be ready for 40 mins.
I finally settled on the Hoosier sugar cream pie - considered the official state pie of Indiana. Drove 4 hours to my mom's in MI, crossing my fingers she would like it. And I am here to tell you we both loved it. The silky filling in a flaky crust is very rich and yummy - it actually reminded me of a butterscotch pie. So creamy and sweet! But what makes these pies are their beautifully exquisite crusts - gorgeous with a perfect texture and taste. You know how you spent your life picking at pie crusts? Trust me - you will devour these.
At $18-$25 per pie, it ain't cheap, and unfortunately - for my wallet and my hips - I am hooked! Thanks to Paula, cupcakes are out, pies are IN!
Here's the thing. The pie is wonderful. Seriously awesome. I've had a lot of their pie, and each one was awesome.
I am also very happy that they opened in my neighborhood.
My slight caveat to this is that they need to work on their customer service. I called this morning to order a pie for pickup on Saturday. You're supposed to give 48 hours notice, according to their website.
I was told that their cutoff to order was yesterday morning (72 hours). When I explained that I was told yesterday that I could still order today - I was told that I was given misinformation. Yeah, by one of your staff!
The staff person I dealt with (who was quite rude) also repeatedly said, "You can pick up your apple pie tomorrow."
Thing is, I repeatedly told her I wanted a pear sour cherry!
How apropos that I write this review on Pi day!
Unicorn Cafe in Evanston is one of the few places in and around the Chicago area that sells Hoosier Mama pie, so when I was in the area this week for dinner, I had to pop in to grab some dessert/breakfast for the next day to go.
Luckily for me, I got the next to last piece of apple pie. Pecan was already gone for the day :o(. Hoosier Mama takes the pie for best p to the ie I've ever tasted! Everything from the chunks of apple heaping out of the thick, golden brown crust was perfect!
Recollecting this mouthwatering taste sensation has me thinking I should mosey over to Unicorn to get me another slice of pie to celebrate 3/14. Hmmm...
Went this past weekend. Really loved the pie. I got the Chocolate Chess pie and it was fantastic. ALso got two pot pies. Holy Crap! I will never eat a Marie Callendar again. The pork pot pie was just a mouthful of wonderment, and the crust was great too.
Great customer service.
I am definitely more into cakes than I am pies, BUT I think maybe I have crossed over to the other side. This current pie obsession is all because of Dexter Season 3. After work today I stopped in to get a pie for me and my boyfriend. They were out of whole pies, so I got a slice of Hoosier sugar cream pie and I just licked the plastic container they put it in because I wanted to get up every last morsel of the pie filling that had stuck to it. I got Z a slice of peanut butter pie and I am actually considering eating it and telling him they were out of pies and give him the chocolate chip scone I got instead. I am a good girlfriend though and he will get his pie minus a wee bite. I can't wait to try more pies!
Pies I've tried so far in order of preference:
Maple Pecan
Hoosier Sugar Cream
Peanut Butter
Chocolate Cream with Bananas
Lemon Meringue (not a fan of this one)
Vegetarians, take note: no lard used in crust! It's butter! I was scared to ask. Paula told me that in the future she may use lard around the holidays in certain pies for people who prefer traditional, but I'm sure they will note that.
Yes indeed. Daily Candy comes through again introducing me to a fine company flying under the radar.
I ordered 2 pies from Hoosier Mama. Apple & Peanut Butter.
My company and I cracked into the first one on Wednesday night - the Apple. My food snob, discerning brother-in-law declared "best pie I have ever eaten". Wow. I ordered another for Saturday night. 3 pies, 5 days and they are all gone.
The peanut butter pie was equally good - though more complex in flavors.
Can't wait for summer - that Strawberry-Rhubarb on the menu looks awfully good!
They are opening a location! On 3.14 (get it? 3.14 is the number equal to Pi? Oh they are so clever those Hoosier people!)
Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the new location to be at Chicago and Ashland. Will keep you posted as I know!

How fabulous is this place?
All the pies I sampled (yes, free samples) and bought were delicious.
I bought a mini Apple-Pear-Cranberry-Walnut crumble pie ($8 and at least 4 servings for me) and it is fantastic.
Lemon Meringue - solid. Made with real lemons, I saw them.
Tried the coconut and the Vinegar Chess pie and I'll be back for more.
The Vinegar Chess pie reminds me of something my grandma would make... well, the whole store and pie collection does that.
Thank you for your pies. I'll be back again... and again.
this pie company is amazing, delicious, special, and they make their pies with love. (i tasted it.) my bf is a pie lover and also very picky, and he LOVED the apple pie. the crust was absolutely perfect as was the filling. yum, yum, YUM!
they are closed on sunday and mondays and i found it hard to contact them via phone, but just order online (atleast 2 days in advance) and you can pick up your pie with no hassles.
wow. went there last week - we ordered a slice of maple pecan and banana cream. the maple was perfect - lots of pecans, lots of flavor. the crust on both pies was flaky and buttery and just like mom's. normally i am not a huge fan of banana cream, but this was a knockout. an added plus, it had real vanilla bean in it, one of my favorite flavors to complement fruit. to top it off, the service was super friendly and the prices are totally reasonable. i'll be taking friends here!
I'm updating this because I now live with a lady who works at Hoosier Mama and she brings home their leftover pies sometimes...and I inhale them at rates which would horrify sane human beings. The cream ones are still a little rich for my tastes, but the fruit ones make every day with them in it a happy one.

It's already probably been said a ton of times, but this is THE BEST place in town for pies. Chocolate chess is off the charts great, vanilla cream with raspberries decadent, and the apple pie is just outstanding (although I would like a little more apple/cinnamon sauce). One downside is that you don't know what is available until you show up. I can more than live with that.
(Yay! I'm still a fan. First, I should correct that the "signature" pie I referred to in my earlier review is actually called sugar creme pie. It's sweet. It's tasty. It's fresh. Oh sweet lord. It's in my fridge waiting for me.)
I'd like to add the coconut custard to my running list of favorites: sugar creme (still tops for me) and the chocolate chess. I love custard (or flan as I am used to saying), and that damn pie in the display was calling out to me to try it. It's light and and not too sweet, with coconut shavings sprinkled on top and mixed in the filling. To me, coconut with anything is just okay, but I thought it worked well together with the custard filling.

Umm.... Redonk. I walk my dog over here and occasionally enjoy the $5 single slice with a cup of coffee deal. The pie is fantastic, and they usually have something perfect for breakfast- I had one slice of apple-cranberry-walnut that was out of this world. And their coffee (Metropolis) is smooth and buttery tasting. I am really rooting for this place to succeed. Get some pie.
