Best place to watch surfers, wind surfers, kite boarders!
Totally awesome to see the power of the waves and wind and see the experts do their thing. We got some great pics!
One of our favorite places to hang out when in Maui! -

Awesome beach to watch the Locals surf and windsurf.
It's also a great place for some beautiful pictures! Also, parking is a piece of cake. -

For sure one awesome spot to see beautiful waves and super talented windsurfers. Hate to tell you locals that we surf just as good as you. I lived in Maui and you guys can't even pull in da cold waters of the mainland. All that to say, this spot is for sure "local" so unless you want to be one harassed haole, just watch and take your pictures. The locals love to hassle you.
There isn't really a large area of beach for hanging out, so it's either surf, or die trying! LOL -

Beautiful lookout area/beach with the ocean on one side and the mountains on the other. Lots of surfers and wind surfers/kit boarders in the water. There are 2 places to park: at the lookout area on top or down the small hill (which is a one way road) where most of the local surfers park. Be warned, if you park down the small hill, it's one way and when you're leaving beach park, there's a sign that says no left turn (but we saw almost everyone making the left turn!). Saw a couple whale spouts and breaching while there!!! Small beach area, but definitely has space for you to lay out and soak up the sun! Also has showers to rinse off! :)

Absolutely beautiful spot to watch and photograph (don't forget the camera!!) some really talented surfers and wind surfers. This is where the guys who teach at the surfing schools go to surf, and many of them live in Paia. The surf is fairly sizable right now (hurricane activity is contributing), swells looked anywhere from 6 to 10 feet, and the breaks are really rough. All of that makes it a lot of fun to watch. However, this beach really isn't for body surfing or swimming -- at least not right now.
Surfing aside, the view at the crest of the hill is stunning. Beautiful blue water and sky stretching on and on.
And the parking lot below is one huge neighborhood party. Yay for dirty hippie surfers who barbeque!! -

Great place to watch some surfing if you're not doing it yourself--there are people in the water from before 8am.

Outstanding park!! There is a great sand beach, great lookout point up on the hill, covered picnic tables, showers, and restrooms. BRING YOUR CAMERA!! Lots of surfers, wind surfers and kite boarding going on and makes for great photo ops. KID ALERT!! Make sure to keep an eye on your kids!! This is not the most kid friendly place due to the rough water and rocks, there are several 10-15 foot drop-offs on the walls around the lifeguard stand on the east side of the park, as well as the drop-offs around the lookout point. Parking can be a challenge during the weekends so hang in there..
The water there is an amazing bule color like none other. Don't miss it. It's a great spot for a picnic, a first stopping point on the road to Hana or a great place to see before a evening meal at Mama's Fish House..Listed in: Best of Maui

On our drive to Hana, we saw this lookout and decided to stop. This was one of the most beautiful places I've seen in Hawaii. The water was so nice and there were tons of surfers and wind surfers in the water.
A local suggested we went down to see the water closer, it's really beautiful so we thanked him and went. We had about 5 minutes of privacy to ourselves to take photos and enjoy the scenery in peace. Then you saw people heading down to join us. That's usually how things work with us, we start a trend and followers just join in lol.
It was very breezy here and we almost lost our camera getting tipped over from the tripod, but hubby has great reflexes and caught the camera in time.
It rained for about 3 seconds and it went away. We got to sit here and enjoy the view for an hour or so. -

WOW...this place is just insane...it keeps getting prettier and prettier...although since the Hana Road is just such a tourist attraction it's hard to really savor the moment since you're on the road and you have to constantly resist the urge to keep driving just to get to the end already...but my advice is stop often and take lots of pictures...especially since the lighting and view will be vastly different on your way back

Such an amazing and beautiful beach! Its definitely where the locals go and they do give off the tourists are not welcome vibe, however, they were all very nice. I think I would be just as protective if I had this gem in my own backyard.
The sand is vast and room for everyone. Tons of surfing and wind surfing action. The hubs and I climbed over the huge rocks to the East and found a nice little snorkel area where no one was. -

After arriving in Kahului and picking up a rental car, one of the first places I always find myself going to is Ho'okipa Beach Park. I usually just sit in the parking lot overlooking the beach and look down at all the surfers and windsurfers below or head down to the grassy area overlooking the water. I've only ventured in to the water here once, and I soon realized that windsurfing on a calm lake in New Hampshire and in the ocean surrounding North Maui isn't quite the same thing. I'm still alive, but luck and not skill saved me from that disastrous idea.
This is a great spot for people who are content watching the action or for those with the high skill level to join in. I wouldn't recommend windsurfing or surfing here as a beginner--there are much calmer spots on the island where you are less likely to smash your head open. -

Ho'okipa Beach is located just past Mama's Fish House on the Hana Highway, between Paia and Haiku.
It is possibly the best place in the world for windsurfing. The sport was largely developed here, and is the site of two major world-class competitions.
Waves can reach 30-40 feet high. Surfing and windsurfing at this beach should be limited to the experts. However, the beach has an 1/8 mile coral reef that makes a pond-like area perfect for taking a dip in the early morning or when the ocean is calmer.
There is an overlook with a large parking area where you can watch the action. The beach itself has a separate parking area, showers and bathrooms. The scent of pakalolo is always in the air here.Listed in: Everything MAUI

Ho'okipa is a great place to surf (am) or windsurf (afternoon). It's a pretty happening spot, with great breaks, not the place to learn... watch out in winter with the huge swells.
If you want to enjoy the sun and watch the local talent, there's a gorgeous overlook with parking lot, and the beach also has shaded picnic areas, restrooms, and showers.Listed in: Island fever: Maui

AMAZING location to watch huge waves and surfers. Located just east of Mama's Fish house and Paia, there is a small parking lot where you can park and spend a few minutes to several hours watching and photographing the amazing natural sites. If you are there for sunset, you get a beautiful multicolored sky to the west over the western Maui mountains.
We stopped once while it was raining and it just wasn't the same. This trip to Maui we went here before dinner at Mama's Fish house and it was amazing. The waves were huge (I was told a little bigger than the norm) and there weren't any surfers this time. We saw surfers the first time in the rain.Listed in: My Maui

What a beautiful beach and talk about using Maui's trade winds to your advantage for windsurfing. If you have little ones, make sure you keep your eyes on them because of the rocks and rough water.

Good god make it easy and get out of the water before you split your mellon after kissing da reef. Ah! ha! Bring the butterflies before you get the butterflies.
Tourist you can watch all the insanity safely from the upper parking lot. This area is under local control so don't even think about it after sunset unless accompanied by a local guide. Welcome to the new world order. Now go home. -

Grab your camera and your telephoto lens. You won't be disappointed. The sets here will leave you awestruck (so just imagine what it must be like surfing them.)

Ho'okipa is two parts: idyllic cliffside lookout for tourists, and local surfing cove. There's plenty of parking, making it an ideal rest stop on your way to Hana.
