Trying to book a tasting for nine ladies during Easter weekend is no easy task. I called a number of places who were sold out before I found Honig through Yelp. The great reviews are no joke -- this is a gem, and its low-key, down-to-earth vibe was the perfect complement to our group. I could tell how much people liked the wine as well because another group who'd been there earlier in the day came back in the afternoon to buy more.

David, who took my reservation over the phone, served us during our tastings. He was friendly and generous with the servings and even comped us for our tasting fee ($90!) as a gift to the soon-to-be bride. Next time I go to St. Helena/Rutherford, I'm definitely stopping in at Honig.

My girls booked a wine tasting at Honig as part of my bachelorette weekend, and I highly recommend it.  Honig has a small tasting area, but it's gorgeous - out on their patio, right next to their vineyards.  Their bathrooms are calming, clean and sleek - and if you're lucky enough to go during daffodil season, you'll be treated to rich chocolate scents as you step into the water closet - emanating wonderfully enough, from the flowers.

David is awesome, and made our tasting experience fabulous. Honig provides generous pours, albeit their offerings range from $25/ bottle to $75/bottle.  On top of everything else, he comped our entire group tasting as a "wedding gift" to me.   We fell in love with a very smooth 2005 Cabernet and took a couple of bottles home with us for that evening.

Honig was our first AND last stop on our second day in Wine Country.  Reservations are recommended, and the tasting fee is $10.  We were a little late to our 10am appointment, but there was no one there anyway since it was super early. Honig is located near Frog's Leap in Rutherford (the other awesome sustainable/eco-friendly winery), and had amazing wines.

We immediately befriended David, who works at Honig, and our friend joined the wine club that AM, which meant we all tasted for free.  Honig (which means 'honey' in German), prides themselves in NOT making Chardonnay (esp. since it's stereotyped to be buttery and over-oaked to cover not-so-great grapes), and as a member, our friend was gifted with a "Friends don't let friends drink Chardonnay", which we later on wore to Cakebread (known for their Chardonnay).

ANYWAY...

As a said, the wines here were amazing! Since we befriended David there, we tried ALL the wines, and learned so much about all the wines and the company.. 2 Sauv Blancs, 2 Cabs, and a Late Harvest Sauv Blanc. .They have an amazing Sauvignon Blanc that's really fruity/crisp/refreshing (reminds me of the John Anthony Sauvignon Blanc).  The Rutherford Sauv Blanc is a little more flavorful, since wines from the Rutherford Valley are said to have the Rutherford dust. The first Vintage cab was a lot more spicy and tannic (more of a typical Cabernet taste), and I found myself preferring the Bartolucci Vineyard Cab, which was a lot smoother.  The Late Harvest Sauv Blanc was like an Iced Wine.. it's the perfect dessert wine - we ended up buying two bottles of this home.

After visiting 3 more wineries, we came back here at end of day (around 5pm), and received free tasting (again), thanks to our friend who became a member.  We ended up closing down the place, and stayed there until our dinner reservations at 7pm.

This is a must visit for Sauv Blanc and Cab Sauv lovers!

Honig is a nice small winery that has a great down-to-earth staff .  On our first visit there, we became wine club members.  Kelly helped us with signing up.  The only slight downfall, is that the discount was effective the day AFTER you sign up for wine club.  Boooo...   We would have picked up a few bottles that day, but at least our tasting was free.

On our second visit we brought our friends.  David helped us with our tastings that day.  He was very friendly and chatted about living in the Napa area, and about hanging out in SF.  He sent us over to their neighboring winery, Frog's Leap, and told us to drop his name, but....  Frog's Leap was closed.

Be sure to check out this winery.  There's great outdoor seating under some shady trees.  Bring your picnic lunch, kids & dogs~!!

No tour buses or horribly awkward tastings. Visiting Honig is like going to your very savvy neighbors house for wine. The wine is excellent and the staff, ambiance and at home feel make it such a compliment for any trip to wine country.

Excellent vineyard with an excellent staff and some excellent wine. But really, it was excellent.

We started our day in Napa here this time around, and it was truly a great experience. We sat around a nice table, tasting casually, while our host (whose name I regret i do not remember) told us all about the wines, the Honig family, and Napa in general. I really appreciated that it was not a lecture at all. The late harvest sauvignon blanc is amazing, but a very very sweet and thick wine, definitely for a specific taste and occassion. The regular sauvignon blanc is excellent as well, and at $15 a bottle, is truly a steal!

Definitely a must-go vineyard.

Wow, I think this was one of my favorite places to go for a tasting.  I picked up the 1999 Cab (Library collection I think) afterwards since it was so smooth and tasty.

The guy who hosted us was pretty amazing - totally unpretentious but very well educated and knew just how much to leave you alone and how much to be involved with the conversation.

Good wines, nice space, and for me, one of the places I almost don't wanna Yelp about to keep it my secret.  Make a reservation though as I think you can only do private tastings there.

i first learned of honig winery through the ferry wine merchants.  i had to pick up a bottle of wine as a gift and the lady assisting me kept pushing the honig 2004 cabernet sauvignon.

since i was going to napa, i'd thought i'd drop in on this charming family owned winery.  the staff is very plesant and unpretentious.  we were given a brief lesson by dave - his face is on the website!

i really liked the fact that they didnt rush you.  you could sit outside (or inside) to do your tasting and take in nature.  it was very relaxing!

**only one thing irked me, which was the fact that - on the website, it says "The cost is $10.00/person, which is credited towards the purchase of wine."  i am fine with paying the tasting fee.  however,it is MISLEADING.   i'd like the yelpers to know, that the tasting fee is NOT credited towards the purchase of wine.  instead, what happens is, if you spend at least $50, they waive the tasting fee.  waiving the tasting fee is completely different from crediting towards your wine purchase.  i think if honig corrected this on their website, i'd be an even happier camper.

wow, tasting here is a lovely experience.  i came here w/ a large group at 4 pm yesterday.  they say that the winery closes at 4, but as long as you get in by 4, you are welcome to stay as long as you want.  they have a lovely outdoor area where you can sit and slowly enjoy the wine.  the staff is more than accomodating and are super nice.  they will even pour stuff that is not on the list of tastings, in addition to what's on the list.  you can tell the staff really loves what they do and want to share their love of their wine w/ you.  the late harvest sauvignon blanc was particularly delicious.

on a side (if not odd) note, the bathrooms at this tasting room are great!  i loved the fixtures, and they provide you w/ aveeno hand lotion.

This is my favorite winery ever!!!

The Cab is absolutely fantastic and the Late Harvest Sauvignon Blanc is beyond great.  I honestly hesitated in writing this review as I want to keep this my own little secret.  Still, I want the owners and staff to do well as they are all extremely friendly and seem to love being vintners.

If you visit Honig's new tasting rooms, you'll need to make reservations...especially as more and more people are introduced to their great wines.  Honig is happiness :-)

I had an awesome tasting experience here -- due in part to the great guys  who were hosting, and the nice outside/trellis area. Despite being in Napa, the place is totally unpretentious and has some tasty Sauv Blancs.

--Update: 7/07 This was my 4th or so time at Honig and it is truly becoming one of my favorite spots in the Valley.  JT & Dave were so accommodating of our large group (14), and we had a great time tasting outside and then they encouraged us to buy a few bottles of wine and hang out on their back patio as they set up for a wedding.

I've never been to the Vineyard but we did the Wine Train and Steve Honig was the guest winemaker. Let me just say that I am not a wine person. I did the wine train because I thought my grandma and sister would enjoy it. Again, I do not drink wine and do not like it. BUT I liked the Honig wine and I liked Steve Honig very much. The white wines were so delicious that all 3 of us girls were sloshed by the time that train pulled into the station. I definately look forward to visiting the vineyard. The staff seems Hillarious.
