I came here for threading. I must say, Amy is an amazing threader! I decided to grow out my eyebrows to it's natural state, and when I came to get my eyebrows done, she definitely polished them really well. It was clean and shaped nicely. She definitely took her time and made sure no stranded hairs were missing.

Also, what I loved about her work was that the extra hair around the shape of my brow didn't grow for weeks! Usually, when I get my brows threaded at other places, it would grow within in a week. Amazing!

I got my eyebrows done by Amy today and they look really nice! I made an appointment and everything went smoothly. She's very professional and passionate about eyebrows. She takes her time, is very detailed, makes conversation, and gives you her analysis and advice at the end. I now know where not to pluck to achieve the best shape.

The only thing I was confused about was price. I was thinking about Kate R's review which mentioned $10 and Chi H's review that said it was @ $8. When I got there the sign said it was $15 for eyebrow shaping &  first time clients & $12 for eyebrow maintenance and return customers. She then explained to me she read someone posted her new prices and sure enough I later saw that Crystal L had posted them last week. Sorry I missed your review Crystal L!

What's different between her spot and the South Asian-owned/ran threading spots: you sit upright rather than sitting in a chair at an angle, and there isn't the herbal gel eyebrow massage at the end. I know I'm generalizing but those are the differences I noticed from my experiences.

So yes, I recommend her to you all and agree with what people said in other posts. Amy is wonderful and it's best to make an appointment.

I got a Japanese thermal straight perm here yesterday with Karla. The salon is nestled in a quiet block on Noriega street, and is a friendly, simple and inexpensive  hair salon. It's not the most lush, upscale hair salon, but they use great products, their hair stylists are very knowledgeable and friendly, and the prices are super reasonable ($10 for a great cut).

I have mid- back length hair, and the straight perm costed $150 and took about 4 1/2 hours. (I've gotten the same procedure done elsewhere for $100, but the quality was definitely not to par with the one I received here). Karla was super friendly. She has a lot of experience with straight perms, and is very meticulous with the procedure. She definitely understands hair. I usually get a straight perm once a year to make my hair smooth, sleek and manageable, but realize that "flat" hair does not really suit my head type. Karla was able to solve this problem by not working too hard on the bang area of my hair, thus retaining the natural volume of my hair. I also got a great trim after the procedure, and Karla gave me some really nice, natural layers. I will definitely be coming back for cuts and straight perms!

This review is for Amy only, who runs her esthetician operations in the rear of the hair salon:

Ever since moving from the Peninsula, where quality threading shops at $8 a pop are easy to find, I set out to find the perfect threading spot in SF.  I tried out some of the other highly-Yelped places, but I was not too impressed.

Thank goodness I found Amy; she's now my go-to threader.  She does quality work at a competitive price, and she keeps her work space clean.  She does the 3-hit combo--threading, tweezing, and trimming--and takes care to ensure that your brows are even.  She's also a sweetheart to boot.  It also doesn't hurt that parking is a breeze in this area.  I would recommend Amy to any friend, but be sure to make an appointment first.

Korla is the best!!! She is amazing sweet and nice, very detailed and very reasonably priced. I went there for the Japanese straight perm. I have A LOT Of hair...Korla made sure that my experience was good and comfortable. I paid $180, plus tip.  It was worth every penny because it is the best straight perm I've ever gotten, and I've been doing it for a long time :) Highly recommend this place, and highly recommend Korla!

Been coming here for 3+ years. Sometimes it could be disappointing when you get the wrong barber. Most of the ladies are good at what they do though. They are nice and attentive.

I usually make my appointments with Jenny when I have time. She's one of the best if not the best in there. She is usually booked all throughout the day and you can't get her to cut  your hair with walk-in, unless you're really lucky.

Location is good with nice parking. And the place is big.

I went to Amy to get my eyebrows threaded today. Unlike all the indian threading shops I've been to, she doesn't require you to pull your eyelid taunt, so my first few minutes of threading were a little more painful than usual. She does a good through job though. I'm more than happy to give her my business while I am living in the city. $15 for first time clients getting their brows done, $12 for each subsequent visit for maintenance. Be sure to make an appointment! Especially on the weekends! She's a busy lady.

I went to Amy based on the reviews here for threading my eyebrows.  She did a good job on my brows, but was a little too pushy when it came to marketing her other services such as eyebrow tatooing and facials.  The cost wasn't extravagant and I appreciate the information she tried to provide, but at the end of the day, all I wanted was to have hair removed, not permanent eyebrows.

I've been looking for an eyebrow threading place.  Found this place on Yelp.  :)

Amy was very nice to me.  Maybe it is b/c she realized I spoke the same dialect (well...sorta!  I had to mix in some English!)

It was weird that I sat upright on this chair that is probably for a bar.  Other places I've gone to has either been a chair (similar to a dental chair) that leans back...or we got to lay down.  I commented on that..and she was a bit offended..ooops..

She explained to me about eyebrow tattoos...and showed me a ton of pictures of  "before" and "after".  Walking out of there...I realized I left her a HUGE tip.  (50%)  What was I thinking?  :I  oh well...that's fine..  Maybe she's no longer offended with my comments!

I yelped threading and found a number of places.  One in the financial district near work was charging 50+ for a service that requires 5 cents of thread and 20 minutes.  One in the inner sunset had great reviews but was booked and the person on the phone wasnt too helpful.  Then I found this one.

Yea it's a bit off the beaten path but that also means parking is free and easy to find.  Amy runs her own threading/makeup/facial/etc shop in the back of this salon.  If you call the number listed on this yelp site, it will go straight to Amy.

For 1/3 the price, Amy did the exact job some place on market would do, minus the cucumer spa water, stuck up receptionist, and pretentious clientele.

With the way the economy is these days, I'm not above going out of my way to save a bit of money.  I'd rather use that money to something more worthwhile, like travel.

I recommend threading for sensitive skin and people who always eye the wax pot nervously wondering how many other people used that same wax pot before you.

I recommend Amy because she's tentative, very good at what she does, paitent, and the price is right.

You can completely trust Amy with your eyebrows. She does a great job threading and even better on tattooing. If you have any questions or concerns, shes more than willing to help you out.
The haircuts here are great as well. All the stylist are very accommodating and will listen to your input on how you want your hair. Probably should call and set up an appointment though because most of them are usually booked.

***Review is for threading by AMY ONLY***

I would like to think I stepped into this place and found Amy based on my good karma, cause I had no idea at all that she had such glowing reviews.

The five stars are definitely for Amy.

So I dropped off my car for an oil change across the street at Sunset 76 (five star joint!), I had an hour to kill and decided to explore the neighborhood on such a lovely day. I must have passed a good handful of asian "beauty" stops, but all were empty and not busy at all--not gonna trust that. I remembered I've been putting off getting my brows in shape. This place was the first and only one buzzing with clientele so after a quick thought I nervously stepped inside. It took a whole minute for a lady to acknowledge me after blow drying her own hair, she then finally pointed me to the back to Amy's area.

Amy apologized for the unresponsive ladies in the front and asked if I was referred to her by anyone. She threaded my brows for $10, trimmed them, and gave me advice on makeup and taking care of my skin. She took the time to tell me about her services and show me photos of her permanent eyebrow-fill work, she does a damn good job from what I can see. She took down my name because she said she likes to remember her clients, I totally came in on a whim but I told her I'd be back, just for her services.

Chinatown is a bit far from the Sunset so I will just have to live with paying $10 instead of $5 for my haircut. Oh well.

As opposed to me f-ing up my hair by doing it myself, I will let the people here f up on it every now and then. It's definitely the luck of the draw when you come in. They always try to sucker me for an extra hair wash, but I'm cheap and already prepared for that, already washed. They stick me with some random person, so I'm always crossing my fingers. I figure even if it's horrible, it'll grow out in 3 days.

Here's the dialogue last time I went with slightly exaggerated Chinese accent -
Stylist - Where da hell you get your haircut last time?
Me - Ummmm, here.
Stylist - I sorry. It's bad.

So my friend and I have been growing our eyebrows out for 4 weeks!!! it was horrible. i couldnt stand looking at my face without nitpicking at those brows.  during this time i ve been looking through yelp to find the perfect place for threading. it would be our first time. other places looked promising but the prices were too much (25 bucks for brows???). so i found hong kong modern hair salon through one of those threads on the yelp forums and decided to go for it. with the distance and the price ($8), i couldnt resist.

when we arrived, amy was in an appointment with another client. she was doing some temporary tatooing for the girls brow. we ended up waiting for a whole hour! i guess thats what happens when you arrive without notice. amy came out and asked us to wait. she also gave us an album of before and after pictures of her clients and their temporary tattoos. their brows looked really nice and natural. anyway, when it was our turn, my friend went first, and then me. We walked away really happy. Amy was nsuper meticulous on our brows. She threaded, tweezed, and trimmed our unruly brows. She took at least 15 - 20 minutes on each. She kept going back and looking at the full frame to see if theyre even or not. For my friends, she even drew in her brows and told her that drawing will make her brows nicer.

THe only bad thing was that she didnt really ask what kind of shape we wanted or tell us what she was doing. But she was super nice and kept asking about where were going to school and our names and stuff. Oh, and parking around there is a bitch.

All in all, shes really nice. I would definitely go back again. This time though, Ill be sure to make an appointment.

Great JAPANESE STRAIGHT PERM by Karla! This is the 3rd time I've permed with Karla- I re-perm every 12 months. She's friendly, very methodical, and thorough. She'll 1st check that your hair can handle the chemicals by testing a few strands. Your hair won't get crimped at the ends (this has happened when I tried other places around SF)

Bottom line, if your hair is unruly, frizzy, or overly curly and you would like to have low maintenance, hassle free hair that is shiny and straight, I highly recommend the Japanese Straight Perm. You can google images of before and after pics too to see the dramatic results.

Cost: $150 (great deal!!)

Time: 4.5 hours (I shampoo-ed/dried at home first)

Procedures: chemical treatment #1, heat lamp, rinse/dry, flat iron, chemical treatment #2 60', rinse/dry.

Afterwards: no moisture/washing for 72 hours, can't tie up or tuck behind ear

My hair is now really light, sleek, shiny, is not at all dried out or artificial, like you might expect after a chemical treatment. LOVE IT!!

i've been back to Amy another 3 times since my last review and i even brought my cousin in last time so she could try threading. you know what i realized? that there is no possible way that Amy could ever mess up threading your eyebrows because hey, she does permanent make up for a living and she does really great eyebrows. she definitely knows what she's doing and she pays attention to detail.

you just gotta try and not mess up plucking your own eyebrows in between sessions. haha

upon reading wonderful yelp reviews, I decided to drop in for some threading by amy, I mean I had my eyebrows done a long time ago but it's due, so armed with yelp knowledge I went in.

turns out amy is in the little room in the back,  she is very friendly and showed me pictures of what her work could look like and she then expertedly did her thang with thread and honestly I had never received threading before, so it's interesting to get it. I do have sensitive skin so it's good to feel that I am not getting waxed and having the surface level of my skin peeled off.

My eyebrow looks quite nice and Amy dotted in a few spots and vola! I am ready to go, I feel that I look more pulled together and polished with my new brow look.

Amy does permanent makeup, which she took the time to tell me about.  hmm not sure if I am ready to commit to permanent yet but I am pleased with my new trimmed hair.

Amy also did my upper lip, which is great because I often rely on using Nair's facial cream and often it gets a tad red.

total damage for eyebrow design + upper lip, I got a discount so it's $15. Nice as I know often these things can get a tad pricey but at $15 it's affordable!

I've been coming here for haircuts for 10+ years.  The prices are good and I gotta say that for the price, the cuts are as good as it gets.  I can never remember the names of the ladies who cut my hair to ask for the same person again, but for the most part, all the stylists are good.  The only drawback is that I've learned to not come on the weekend if you expect to walk in.

I was in desperate need of a haircut which I haven't had in half a year so I popped my head into Hong Kong Modern Hair Design last Wednesday, the only place on Noriega with lights still on at 7:30pm, to see if they would cut my hair. Lily who just finished a late appointment said yes. She gave me a very thorough wash, making sure that she rinsed all the shampoo out of my thick hair, was quite friendly and chatty, and listened to how I wanted my hair cut. Since it was late, she only spent 10 minutes cutting my hair and didn't use regular scissors to give me layers which I would've preferred but I'm grateful that I even got a haircut at that hour.

After a few horrible experiences with estheticians mutilating my eyebrows, I've become very picky about who I can trust. So when I say Ms. Amy Chan is someone I can trust and who I actually do go back to; by that I mean she's ingenious. Professional, well priced, thoughtful, listened when I told her what I wanted... she's good. and I'm happy with my shape!

This place is pretty good for threading, and you're offered good deals if you take several services which is pretty nice. $25 for a full face. Amy seems pretty nice, though I wished she'd ask me how I'd like my brows before starting, though they came out nice albeit a little thinner than I'd of liked. I want to try facials here, since I've heard they're pretty good and well from what I saw $35-$45.

The reason why I give it one star is because I had the one and only guy at that place cut my hair and it traumatized me. Since that hair cut a year and a month ago I haven't had my hair cut. I'm currently looking for a new place to get my hair cut, and it shouldn't be a problem since they're a dime a dozen along Noriega if I'm too lazy to head to other places.

So hear my warning and get someone else to cut your hair there. I did get it cut one other time there and it wasn't too bad, but I wasn't happy either. I don't know who cut it.

I just had Permanent EYELINER (Top lid only) done by Amy. Love it!! As always, she is meticulously clean and organized when she sets up her equipment. I saw her sanitize her work area, before she starts.

She designed a line that fits my natural eye shape. I had ask Amy to do a very subtle flick at the end of the eyeliner and it looks fabulous! She did a great job making the eyeliner look even and drawed it close to my lash line. Friends heard that I had this done and made a point to stare at my eyes. I had many many many many compliments. It is beautiful!!! And now I skip a step to my daily make up routine!!! LOVE IT!

About pain: All I have to say is that the initial markings where very painful, however after that, it is an itchy burning type of pain. About Maintenance: here are some suggestions: When you are done, your eyes will be swollen for a few days. DO NOT rub your eyes. Use small ice packs on them as needed. Wash your face as usual, but be careful around the eye area (do not rub the eyes,). When washing... I suggest to just splash luke warm water on the eyes and pat dry (very) gently with tissue . Make sure you keep on applying the stuff (some sort of ointment) Amy gives on the eyelid (try using a Q-Tip for applications). Also, don't be alarmed if ink rubs off....it will do that for a few days. All this was worth it!! It was also very reasonably priced. (Eyeliner starting from $120 and up). If you want any else done: Permanent Eyebrows starts from $180 and up, Lip Liner starts at $180 and up, Full Lip is $300 and up). Thanks again AMY!! You are simply the best!! With your steady hands and artistic eyes, I am never going to anyone else!!!!

Jenny is great at giving haircuts! She's so professional. I go to her every time I need a haircut, and that's every three weeks. There's no other person I would get a haircut from. She's got a real good eye for what looks good on somebody. She does it quickly, cleanly, not to mention she's funny! She's a great person to talk to while getting a haircut, and even a better person to get a haircut from. Never once did she mess my hair up, and I've been getting haircuts from her for more than two years now. I would recommend her to anybody. She's everything a great hair cutter needs to be. Five stars out of five is simply an understatement for her.
